[Bug 970494] [NEW] Doesn't reconnect to gtalk after suspend/resume

2012-03-31 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

In 11.10, empathy would reliably reconnect to all of my accounts after
suspend/resume. In 12.04 beta, it seems to get stuck on Google Talk. After
resume, empathy shows a spinner indefinitely, and to reconnect I need to go to
the accounts dialog and toggle my gtalk account off and then on. My Jabber
account seems to reconnect fine though.

[Bug 970498] [NEW] Status stuck on away/idle

2012-03-31 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Precise, empathy no longer sets my status back to
available after a period of idleness. Even though I am back at my
computer, typing and moving the pointer, my status doesn't change back.
(in 11.10, it would automatically set me back to available)

shell, which I'm not using)

[Bug 661283] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in cairo_set_source_surface()

2010-12-21 Thread Matt Zimmerman
I've had gnome-settings-daemon continue to crash on me regularly in
10.10 (bug 685785), but haven't seen this particular trace recur and I
don't have any way to reproduce it. I filed this over two months ago, so
to be honest I'm having trouble remembering the exact circumstances
which surrounded the crash.

It looks as if another possible NULL return is if
gdk_pixmap_foreign_new_for_screen fails. In any case, someone should be
checking for an error return and not dereferencing the null pointer,
right?

I'm surprised that ~/.xsession-errors wasn't automatically attached by
apport; if it's routinely useful for diagnosing crashes like this one,
that should probably be changed.

I rebuilt gnome-settings-daemon for debugging, and just had it crash

[Bug 685785] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_free()

2010-12-16 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Two other symptoms I've seen which may be related:

X Error of failed request: XI_BadDevice (invalid Device parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 141 (XInputExtension)
Minor opcode of failed request: 37 (X_ChangeDeviceProperty)
Device id in failed request: 0x17
Serial number of failed request: 1476
Current serial number in output stream: 1477

The above was output by gnome-settings-daemon while it was running in
the background attached to a terminal.

** (gnome-settings-daemon:1869): WARNING **: Connection failed,
reconnecting...

The above was found in ~/.xsession-errors, adjacent to update-notifier's
checking for valid crashreport now indicating a crash happened around
the same time (though it may or may not have been gnome-settings-
daemon).

It happens about once or twice per week, perhaps depending on how often I
suspend and resume.

I could try plugging in a USB keyboard repeatedly and see if that triggers
the problem, but at present I have no recipe.

[Bug 563879] [NEW] evolution-data-server consumes massive amounts of memory, invokes OOM killer

2010-04-15 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

This is a typical profile for evolution-data-server when I notice a
memory shortage:

mdz 2082 0.0 43.8 1338128 647688 ? Sl Apr09 1:22

iid=OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_DataServer_CalFactory:1.2 --oaf-ior-fd=36

The oom-killer has been invoked on this system 30 times in the past few
weeks (usually killing chromium). Bug 305428 describes a similar
phenomenon.

I suspect this is related to importing calendar events from Google

headphones for a 5.1 channel DVD. My audio output setting in Totem was
also Stereo. Is this still currently and issue for you?

I'm having trouble testing this as well, because DVD menus are broken (this
was working when I filed the bug). Is there a bug open about that?

I tested by manually pointing totem at a .VOB file with 5.1 audio, and it
did produce sound, at least until I tried to seek. When I tried to seek,
playback stopped entirely, and the totem window stopped responding (had to
force quit).

Seeking worked fine on a .VOB with 2 channel audio, so I think there is
still a problem with 5.1 (though it may be different).

[Bug 503082] [NEW] Totem doesn't play DVD 5.1 audio

2010-01-04 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

I noticed that with certain DVDs, I wouldn't hear any audio at all, or
would hear a short burst of sound followed by silence. Often I could
hear the audio on the DVD menu, but not during the feature. After some
experimentation, I realized the problem was with 5.1 audio streams.
DVDs with stereo audio work fine, while those with 5.1 audio exhibit
this problem. My audio output setting in Totem is Stereo.

Totem played these same discs correctly in 9.10, and VLC (with default
pulseaudio output) still plays them fine in Lucid.

[Bug 445846] [NEW] gdm still doesn't set the correct keyboard layout in the session

2009-10-07 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

My symptoms are the same as in bug 421212, but as requested there, I am
filing a new bug, as that one is believed to be fixed.

I'm running gdm 2.28.0-0ubuntu14. I tried removing

[Bug 421212] Re: gdm ignores keyboard layout selection

2009-09-04 Thread Matt Zimmerman
I see three distinct problems here:

1. The fact that the defaul in gdm was USA, even though a different
layout was selected during installation (bug 408292)

2. Setting the layout in gdm doesn't actually take effect for password
entry (at least the first time...I've found that the next time around it
seems to remember this setting and it actually takes effect)

3. Setting the layout in GDM (as in #2) doesn't change the layout in the
session itself (in my case, it uses qwerty even though dvorak was
selected on the login screen)

#1 is a regression from 9.04. #2 and #3 seem to relate to new
functionality in the gdm greeter; I don't recall there being a keyboard
layout selector there in 9.04.

These three issues need to be tracked separately.

I dropped the patch from the recent karmic upload of
gnome-power-manager. It is unclear whether this is still an issue in
the new world where we just read -evdev events instead of ACPI events

valid events. I discussed it with Richard Hughes, and he suggested to
try without the patch, and that he doesn't like to adopt it.

I've been seeing spurious suspends immediately after resume over the past

[Bug 402161] [NEW] gnome-keyring-daemon is running, but SSH_AUTH_SOCK is not set in the session environment

2009-07-21 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

After starting a new session recently (due to bug 343528), I noticed
that my ssh sessions were no longer making use of the GNOME keyring.
This seems to be because SSH_AUTH_SOCK is no longer set in the
environment of programs running in the session.

It is printed in ~/.xsession-errors:

perseus:[~] grep SSH .xsession-errors
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/keyring-uZ6Zb2/socket.ssh

and setting it in a shell works (ssh then talks to gnome-keyring-daemon

In fact, it's not in any process in my session that I can see:

[Bug 401047] [NEW] Greeter doesn't have the right keymap set

2009-07-18 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

My symptoms are the same as bug 395103: although my keymap is set to
dvorak in HAL, and previous versions of gdm honored this, it's now using
a USA keymap.

There is a drop-down which allows a keymap to be selected, but selecting
Dvorak doesn't seem to have any effect (the keymap remains USA/qwerty).

I see the patch was dropped because this is believed fixed upstream, so
I'm filing this separately as it may be a different problem:

[Bug 389686] Re: compiz --replace fails to kill metacity, resulting in cpu overload

2009-07-08 Thread Matt Zimmerman
I see a similar effect here. I had been running with desktop effects
disabled (metacity), and then re-enabled them (switching to compiz). it
seems that gnome-session is continually respawning metacity
continuously, chewing up lots of CPU. metacity fails quickly because
compiz is already running, but it gets started again immediately.

I think the problem is likely in gnome-session rather than metacity
itself, though I haven't investigated.

Also, at least in my case, compiz *was* correctly run with the --replace
parameter:

Your original report stated:

The error message will be Service Unavailable

Please attach a screenshot of the dialog box which includes that text
you quoted, so we can be sure that we know which one it is.

Hand-editing ~/.ssh/known_hosts should be an easy way to reproduce the

[Bug 388899] [NEW] Location name: dialog opens unexpectedly at login and can't be dismissed

2009-06-18 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Upon logging into my session, I saw the Location dialog (screenshot
attached) pop up. I don't know what caused it to appear, but I can't
get rid of it (clicking either OK or Cancel does nothing, though the
button visually responds).

As I logged in, I pressed alt+f2 to get the Run Application dialog, and
this one appeared behind it.

I haven't seen this happen before, and will see if it happens the next
time I login.

 Sorry,
can you explain how to unsubscribe?

I've clicked on Unsubscribe icon but nothing happens. I'm still receiving

There seems to be a problem with the unsubscribe mechanism on this bug.
I've notified the Launchpad developers of the issue and will see that it's

Re: [Bug 352362] Re: After upgrade to Jaunty Beta my machine shows different problems, , random high load, no meta key, etc.

2009-04-24 Thread Matt Zimmerman
The problem in this bug was due to filesystem corruption. If your
filesystem is not corrupt, you have a different problem. If you're unsure
where the problem is (and thus where to file the bug), consider opening a
question to get help before filing a bug report.

[Bug 328167] Re: [arm] gnome-keyring-daemon eating 100% CPU at login in Jaunty

2009-04-08 Thread Matt Zimmerman
@Ralph, since all of the other reports in this bug are on arm systems,
it's very possible that you have a different bug. Could you file it
separately (use ubuntu-bug /usr/bin/gnome-keyring) and mention the bug
number here? Maybe it will turn out to be the same, but maybe not, and
it's easier to dupe the second bug than to untangle this one.

For what it's worth, I use gnome-keyring-daemon pretty heavily on x86-64
and have never seen this happen once, so if there's a bug there, it
seems MUCH less common than the ARM issue we're investigating here.
