[Bug 93847] Re: Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor

2011-01-23 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
@Thomas Weiler
This 8% is not everything, if I switch to the Resources tab I see CPU usage
of about 15-20% on each core which is a lot considering I'm not running
anything computionally complex. On my older laptop it was a lot more than this
15-20%, it reached 50-70% IIRC. Besides, it's not only a g-s-m process, Xorg
also counts as it suffers from excessive calls from g-s-m. Each a few seconds/a
minute there is also a peak: g-s-m to about 25%, Xorg to about 50%.

You obviously have a different issue so if you want to report it create
a separate bug report.

2011-01-23 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
@Thomas Weiler
Maybe you're right but that would mean most of alleged dups should be
un-dupped, look at their description.

Besides, if you look at the bugzilla report:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524830
you'll see they claim that the problem is caused by some inefficient updating
of the structure displayed so it should not mess up with top. Still, I think
this is a different issue, if it somehow happened to be the same it's always
possible to mark it as a duplicate then.

2010-09-04 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
@Dylan McCall
The default themes now have a _considerably large_ hotspot for resizing on
 all four corners
 of every window.

No, they're not. I checked in gnome-terminal and slightly moving up the
mouse pointer from bottom-right corner makes it lose the ability to
resize the window.

Besides, if You don't want people to resize by clicking on borders and
moving, disable it completely and adapt OS X method here. The current
behaviour is unacceptable.

I strongly disagree. First of all, advanced users appreciate terminal because
it's for them (e.g. for me) faster and more convenient. On the other hand,
non-technical users shouldn't touch the terminal. This itself contradicts Your
claim. Besides, I find it the best solution to provide default users with as
few options as possible which means they don't need an unmount option. If they
really want to mount their pendrive again, they can just plug it out and in and
it works. If You're an advanced user, You can also do that but You may consider
it more convenient to just use the terminal.

[Bug 501188] [NEW] System Monitor applet provides invalid information when moving a mouse pointer to its charts on GNOME Panel

2009-12-28 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

System Monitor applet provides invalid information when moving a mouse
pointer to its charts on GNOME Panel.

Steps to reproduce:
1) add System Monitor applet to one of GNOME panels and set network chart to be
shown
2) start to download sth from internet, taking care of nearly constant rate
(like about 100 KB/s all the time)
3) move mouse over the network chart

Result: download information drastically decrease although transfer rate
doesn't change

Expected result: download information is not affected by moving a mouse
pointer

I attached a screenshot showing this issue - all drops in the middle
chart come from moving mouse over this chart, not from actual download
rate drop.

[Bug 461520] Re: Evince crashes at an attempt to print to file

2009-12-11 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
I know, it's the point of what I said that I still didn't have debugging
symbols, I asked what should I do as installind evince-dbgsym doesn't
help.

BTW, wouldn't it be enough to do apport-collect 461520 instead of
opening a new bug? And what would it change? I already reported this
bug, I don't see why doing it once again should give any different
result...

I added proper repositories, installed evince-dbgsym:

GDB still claims there are no debugging symbols for evince:

they are caused by the fact that I purged PulseAudio completely.

As suggested here:

it's enough to comment out line containing a line (it's near the beginning):

Comment out the 9th line (the one that says if [ `CheckPolicy` == 0 ];

It should be easier now to identify the possible fix...

[Bug 440465] Re: removing pulseaudio breaks sound control

2009-11-21 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
For people disappointed with PulseAudio - see:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8130297postcount=25
Those scripts allow You to have a fully functional Karmic sound setup without
PulseAudio.

First, execute the following in a terminal:
$ sudo apt-get purge libcanberra-pulse pulseaudio pulseaudio-esound-compat
pulseaudio-module-bluetooth pulseaudio-module-gconf pulseaudio-module-udev
pulseaudio-module-x11 gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils pavucontrol
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer alsa-oss python-alsaaudio

Then, unpack those 5 files somewhere (but it's better not to change the
location later), add:
python /PATH/TO/alsavol.py
python /PATH/TO/volbar.py
(You can also run them in a current instance by pressing Alt+F2 twice and
writing there those commands)

At last, open System - Settings - Keyboard Shortcuts and add a
custom shortcut key named alsa mute and command
/PATH/to/alsa_master_mute and assign the mute key to this command. Do
the same for down and up.

Instructions thanks to richie2.0. :)

P.S. Remember to change sound setup in all applications from pulse to
alsa (e.g. in (s)mplayer, vlc, VirtualBox etc.).

P.S.2. I tried pulse, I used it with Karmic for a month, but it caused
so many troubles for me that I decided I don't want to fight with this
any longer.

[Bug 482949] [NEW] There is no easy way to restore Nautilus as a default application to open directories after it has been changed

2009-11-14 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Some applications can change the default application to open directories from
nautilus to another application. For example, I did it once with Krusader by
following these steps:
1) Right-click any folder in Krusader
2) Choose Open with - Other...
3) Choose any application (e.g. I chosed smplayer because I wanted it to play
this directory as a DVD Video)
4) Mark Remember association for this type of file

From now on, clicking Places - any folder causes Smplayer to open the
directory. There is no easy way to fix this as directory properties
window in Nautilus doesn't have a tab to set a default application (it
only has one for files). The only way to fix this is editing
.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list file manually which is not
especially user-friendly.

Proposed fixes:
a) Add a tab in directory properties for setting a default application for
opening it.
b) Don't allow to open directories in any program besides Nautilus regardless
other settings.

[Bug 473383] [NEW] Gnome Panel menus are refreshed too rarely

2009-11-03 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Installed applications does not always show in Gnome Panel menus after
their installation. If I enter edit menus, I can see buttons for those
programs and they're active. If I click to the proper submenu of
Applications, it's not there. I have to trigger 'killall gnome-panel'
manually.

The same happens if I edit one of entries (e.g. changing 'gnome-
terminal' to 'gnome-terminal --geometry=140x40') - the command is not
updated at once, only after killing gnome-panel process.

Yes, it is. Steps are obvious - just open any ps file in evince and then try to
print to file. When you switch to the Page Setup page, only the only print
setting is active, the others aren't. Screenshot attached.

No particular printer. Evince has a dedicated option printf to file
even if no printer is installed (it doesn't require cups-pdf). I just

[Bug 460056] [NEW] After returning from fullscreen brightness goes up to maximum

2009-10-24 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I run a lot of apps (like games, e.g. World Of Goo; DOSBox etc.) in
fullscreen mode, when I go back to the desktop, brightness boost up to
maximum (which, in my Dell Latitude E6500, is really high).

Steps to reproduce:
1) run DOSBox
2) run a game (You have to mount a directory first)
3) go fullscreen (Alt+Enter)
4) turn DOSBox off (Ctrl+F9)
5) brightness is at maximum level now - if You change it just a bit, it goes

[Bug 454546] [NEW] Confusing unmounting a pendrive - too much choice (3 options)

2009-10-18 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Let's assume I'm a regular Ubuntu user. I want to remove a pendrive. I
right-click the icon and what I see? Three options to choose!

1) Unmount
2) Eject
3) Safely remove a device (it seems it's the same as Eject)

I think only the 3rd option should be left. It's the way it's done in MS
Windows XP (Vista/Seven behaves worse) and I think it's a proper way. If
a user want to view their device again, they can disconnect and connect
it again. If sb doesn't want to do that and they does want to unmount,
not eject a device, then... then the user isn't a regular user and they
know how to use a umount command - GUI option to do that is not needed,
it only confuses others.

want to view their device again, they can disconnect and connect it
again. If sb doesn't want to do that and they does want to unmount, not
eject a device, then... then the user isn't a regular user and they know
how to use a umount command - GUI option to do that is not needed, it
only confuses others.

[Bug 449188] Re: Closing laptop lid doesn't cause the screen to go blank

2009-10-14 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
Interesting... I discovered that after I close the lid the screen
actually goes blank, but only for less than a second. Something has to
wake it up again.

[Bug 294617] Re: unable to send files via bluetooth to phone

2009-10-14 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
It doesn't work in 64-bit Karmic either. My mobile doesn't even notice
that sth is trying to send a file to it. While browsing a device I also
can't create new files, getting an error:

There was an error creating the directory in obex://[XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX]/STH
Operation not supported by backend

[Bug 450474] [NEW] All icons are marked with green check (which means it's synchronized with Ubuntu One) even though I haven't set up an account there

2009-10-13 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I use 64-bit Karmic. After one of last updates all my files are marked

[Bug 449191] [NEW] GNOME System Monitor sometimes doesn't follow the memory usage order even if desired

2009-10-11 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Sorting processes list by memory usage on Processes tab in System
Monitor usually works but after a period of time there are sometimes
mistakes that can be corrected only by clicking on a Memory tab twice
(first click sorts properly, but in reverse order).

Screenshot attached.
