[Bug 255030] Re: Eog creates thumbnails even when deactivated in gnome

2011-03-25 Thread Michael Chudobiak
gnome imaging apps follow the freedesktop.org thumbnailing spec:
http://people.freedesktop.org/~vuntz/thumbnail-spec-cache/

There is no gnome-wide disable-thumbnail setting, and I doubt you'll
convince anyone that it is worth having one. (Part of the probably is
that nautilus, gthumb, and eog can be present on a system in any
combination.) gnome generally tries to minimize the number of user
settings. That's controversial, and kde takes a different approach, but
it is the general gnome approach.

gThumb has a disable-thumbnail setting, although it can only be enabled
through gconf-editor. Maybe you can convince eog to do the same, but
such a patch would have to go upstream.

However: have you tried chmod -R 550 ~/.thumbnails? Making
~/.thumbnails read-only would probably resolve your issue. (If it
doesn't, that would be a serious bug.)

[Bug 255030] Re: Eog creates thumbnails even when deactivated in gnome

2011-03-25 Thread Michael Chudobiak
arqon,

You should forward your notes to the eog mailing list
(http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/eog-list). I'm sure they'd
appreciate hearing about the problems you've noted in the design of
their collection viewer. Especially if you provide them with a patch
fixing the design problems and slipping in your gconf setting :-)

No distro is going to take a patch like this without upstream support,
however, so I encourage you to use the eog mail list and the gnome
bugzilla.

[Bug 663188] Re: pictures renaming slower

2011-03-22 Thread Michael Chudobiak
I reproduced the problem and filed a bug report upstream
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645515).

Just so you know, you could have gone ahead and filed the bug upstream yourself:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=gthumb

The ubuntu bug reports are not closely followed by upstream developers.

[Bug 713838] Re: gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive

2011-03-14 Thread Michael Chudobiak
What version of gThumb is this (check in Help About)?

It could be that the old importer script is still present somewhere on
the system, and it is unmounting the gvfs mounts (gvfs-mount -u
~/.gvfs/gphoto2*).

Old versions of gThumb (2.10.x) conflicted with the gvfs/gphoto backend,
and had to umount those gvfs mounts.

The new versions (2.12.x) are compatible with the gvfs/gphoto backend,
and unmounting things would actually be harmful.

So, look for some helper script that might be unmounting things.

I don't actually use Ubuntu, so this theory could be all wrong...

[Bug 694968] Re: Gthumb : no batch resizing any more !!??!!

2011-01-02 Thread Michael Chudobiak
Yes, this was a one way (nonsense) decision. With each release, we
randomly select 2 or 3 features to remove, just to annoy people. Also,
we will no longer use the letter u or the number 7 in any part of
the user interface. The use of the letter q is also under review.

If any of this is a problem for you, you can try upgrading to gThumb
2.12.1-3, available here:

https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/gthumb

More seriously, as a stable release, 2.12.1-3 does include the resizing
tool. The 2.11.x series was an unstable development series.

[Bug 444300] Re: gThumb doesn't import images

2010-04-20 Thread Michael Chudobiak
I think the Ubuntu packagers stuck 2.11.2.1 in the latest release but
then decided it was too new for a long-term-support release, so they
downgraded back to 2.10.x. That is why you are seeing the odd
2.11.2.1.is.2.10.11-0ubuntu1 versioning.

Check gThumb's HelpAbout to be sure. But I'm pretty sure you have
2.10.x.

Anyway, 2.11.3 has been released upstream...

[Bug 545871] Re: [lucid] downgrade to stable 2.10

2010-03-25 Thread Michael Chudobiak
Martin,

The 2.11.x codebase has been quite good (i.e., reasonably crash-free),
so I think the bleeding-edge distros should ship it. (LTS is not
bleeding edge, of course.)

I'm not that happy with the import dialog either. I would like the
destination settings to be in the main import dialog. However, the main
developer, Paolo, doesn't share that view. (You can offer your views on
the gthumb mailing list.) The good news is that gThumb still does not
own your photos like f-spot.

The import dialog does have an event field. This can be used with the
custom folder option to automatically create a destination folder with
that name (or a combination of the name and date, like
/home/bill/2010-01-01_wedding). It is not properly documented at the
moment.

2010-03-24 Thread Michael Chudobiak
1. The import folder is specified in the Preferences button of the
import dialog. Not a bug :-)

2. Camera off - not sure about that. Please file a bug upstream.

3. Multiple select - https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=610419.
I'm not sure if/how that will be resolved.

4. Drag to folders - not implemented yet - should be -
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=593431

5. Re-enable thumbnails - fixed in git, will be in 2.11.2.1.

Anyway, I'm not sure what criteria Ubuntu uses for LTS packages, but do keep in
mind that 2.10.x is totally dead upstream and no fixes are being released.
2.11.x is being actively developed and maintained. Just so you know.

OK, it sounds like 2.10.x is what you need for LTS then.

On a side note, the picture editing functions are NOT gone in 2.11.2.1:

1. Enable Image Tools in the EditExtensions dialog, if not already
enabled.

2. When you open an image, click on the palette icon in the upper left
(Edit file tooltip) to show the edit functions. Lots of edit
functions!

2010-03-24 Thread Michael Chudobiak
Was that plug-in not enabled by default for you? It is supposed to be.

The entire codebase has been re-written. Most features are now
implemented as plug-ins. Most are supposed to be enabled by default.

Change happens!

[Bug 351122] Re: gthumb doesn't work with gphoto (was please disable gphoto2 backend for Jaunty)

2009-11-10 Thread Michael Chudobiak
FYI, this all started because the newish gvfs-gphoto backend claims the
device, which stomps all over apps that used the old libgphoto APIs.
That wasn't really nice, but such is progress.

gThumb has been ported to use the new gvfs-gphoto backend, but it has
not been released yet. Keen users can check out the ext branch of
gthumb. See http://live.gnome.org/gthumb for details.

gthumb maintainers are not actively maintaining the 2.10.x series at the
moment.

This problem will go away with gthumb 2.11.0 and later.

[Bug 275865] Re: Nautilus RAW image thumbnails have wrong orientations.

2009-06-18 Thread Michael Chudobiak
Victor,

gnome-raw-thumbnailer 2.0.1-0ubuntu5 appears to refer to this software, which
made its last release in 2005:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=131836.

Ubuntu should switch to this one, which uses libopenraw, and handles
orientation correctly:
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnome-raw-thumbnailer/

Anyway, this is not a Nautilus issue. You have a bad thumbnailer.

[Bug 275865] Re: Nautilus RAW image thumbnails have wrong orientations.

2009-05-27 Thread Michael Chudobiak
What software is used to generate the RAW thumbnails?

Is it gnome-raw-thumbnailer, based on libopenraw? If so, what version?

Or is something else being used?

Using gconf-editor to check the various keys in
/desktop/gnome/thumbnailers may provide this information.

RAW images do generally contain orientation tags, and lots of other
metadata.

[Bug 320026] Re: Thumbnail of jpeg (11 by 3072 pixels) not displayed in Nautilus

2009-04-21 Thread Michael Chudobiak
Is this really a bug?

If a 11x3072 image is scaled to fit in 128x128, you would scale down by
3072/128 = 24 times.

In the other axis, 11 / 24 = .45 pixels.

I imagine that some apps fail to generate thumbnails if one axis is
smaller than 1.0 pixels. Others might cut off at 0.5 pixels. You can't
have a 0x128 image, after all.

[Bug 361179] Re: Partially Corrupt JPEG Won't Show in Gthumb

2009-04-14 Thread Michael Chudobiak
eog uses a progressive loader that displays bits of the file as it reads
it. Thus it shows some of the file before aborting.

gthumb reads the whole file first before displaying. Thus it fails

[Bug 230383] Re: gthumb does not put deleted items into the new trash system on hardy

2009-02-17 Thread Michael Chudobiak
Christophe Bisière's patches are part of a much larger change in svn

[Bug 183874] Re: (Feisty) gThumb tries to show mp3, flv and wma files

2008-02-29 Thread Michael Chudobiak
No, it is not senseless.

However, the trunk version of gThumb has a preference to disable listing
of audio and video files.

[Bug 192926] Re: gThumb doesn't import photos (Hardy)

2008-02-20 Thread Michael Chudobiak
I don't use Ubuntu - I just follow these bug reports as a gthumb
developer.

I import all the time using Fedora 8, using Canon cameras. It works fine
there.

Sorry I can't be more helpful... perhaps you could run gthumb in gdb, if
you know how, and see what portion of the code is triggering the
message.

[Bug 192926] Re: gThumb doesn't import photos (Hardy)

2008-02-19 Thread Michael Chudobiak
It doesn't sound like a gThumb issue. It is probably a libgphoto2 issue,
or a permissions issue. gThumb is just reporting the underlying error.
I'm not sure why FSpot works OK - I'm not familiar with its import code.

2008-02-19 Thread Michael Chudobiak
Does it import all of the thumbnails? Is it possible that you are
running out of space in your tmp directories?

The Operation not supported and The folder contents could not be
displayed error messages are not part of gthumb (they aren't in the
gthumb source code).

2008-01-22 Thread Michael Chudobiak
It's not a bug, it's a feature...

gThumb lists any files that are likely to have been imported from a
camera, including audio and video files. Doubling-clicking on these
files will launch the default audio/video player application.

[Bug 181142] Re: Rotate and save the image counter-clockwise

2008-01-08 Thread Michael Chudobiak
It's not a gthumb bug.

A different program generated some of your thumbnails, but they ignored
the exif orientation tag.

Long story. See:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=428725
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=440978

It should work properly if you delete your old thumbnails (rm -rf
~/.thumbnails) and have gtk version 2.11.5 or higher.

[Bug 85780] Re: gThumb red eye reduction does not work

2007-12-10 Thread Michael Chudobiak
The author of the redeye tool set the algorithm parameters at values
that seemed to give the best results. He found that adding adjustable
parameters didn't help much.

I don't like the idea of selection areas - it gets too complicated.

This is actually a really hard function to do well. However, the redeye
tool is nicely isolated in src/dlg-redeye-removal.c. Please experiment
with it! If you find a better method, please submit a patch upstream.

[Bug 147770] Re: awful print quality due to unwanted blur

2007-10-14 Thread Michael Chudobiak
Ah, the problem is that you are using SVG images. SVG is a vector
format. gThumb and eog are raster viewers.

The librsvg library is used by gThumb and eog to convert the SVG image
into a raster format - automatically causing fuzziness. I'm not sure
what dpi/resolution is used in the vectorraster conversion - whatever
it is, it is too coarse for your application.

gThumb and eog only provide basic support for SVG. For full support, you
do need to use a vector-based program like Inkscape. Bug the Inkscape
developers to add better printing support :-)

The isn't really a gthumb bug.
