[Bug 477565] [NEW] Log Viewer: Log window jumps to bottom on new messages

2009-11-07 Thread Mike Trim
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

See also: Bug #346558

When viewing a log file in the log file viewer, the display jumps to the
bottom of the log when new messages are written to the log. This is
desired behaviour if the display is at the bottom of the file already,
however if I am trying to read part of the middle of the log file I do
not want it to jump to the end. The viewer should only scroll to the
bottom if the scrollbar was already at the bottom before the new message
appeared.

[Bug 280188] Re: libgtkada2-bin : trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/gdialog', which is also in package zenity

2009-07-01 Thread Mike Trim
Please update the intrepid and jaunty libgtkada2 packages to the version
in karmic (2.12.0-4ubuntu1). This will fix this bug and bug #280503.
This has no impact as the original package version remains the same and
in any case the current package version cannot be installed on most
GNOME systems due to this bug.

[Bug 280188] Re: libgtkada2-bin : trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/gdialog', which is also in package zenity

2009-06-16 Thread Mike Trim
Having a conflict resolves the packaging error, but it doesn't make
libgtkada2 usable since zenity is a dependency of several core Ubuntu
packages, e.g. ubuntu-desktop, metacity. Therefore I think it is more
reasonable to resolve this by removing the gdialog symlink from the
libgtkada2 package as per the debdiff attached above. As far as I am
aware there are no other packages that depend on the existence of
libgtkada2's gdialog, so this should not cause any breakage.

[Bug 280188] Re: libgtkada2-bin : trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/gdialog', which is also in package zenity

2009-05-27 Thread Mike Trim
The attached debdiff is against the latest debian packge, 2.12.0-3.

This fixes the conflict with zenity by no longer installing a symlink in
/usr/bin/gdialog, and patching gate to call gdialog2 directly.

The latest debian package also fixes LP: #280503.

[Bug 14335] Re: nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive

2009-04-02 Thread Mike Trim
In the CD-ROM case (bug #353548), the workaround/fix for this is to add
mode=0444 to the following gconf key:
/system/storage/default_options/iso9660/mount_options

This results in all files on CD-ROMs being mounted without the
executable flag set, unless the CD-ROM has Rock-Ridge extensions that
specify the permissions. Note that this will not prevent explicitly
executing scripts on the disc via an interpreter.

In my opinion, this setting and the similar ones for vfat/ntfs mentioned
above should be the default. I cannot think of any use-cases where
someone would want to directly execute files from an external drive or
CD-ROM.

[Bug 315913] Re: Brasero - recognises a 4.7 gb writable dvd as 4.3 gb

2009-01-16 Thread Mike Trim
This is not a bug, it is just that the DVD makers describe their disc
capacity using GB = 1000^3, but brasero is reporting the capacity using
GB = 1024^3.  See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-R#Recordable_DVD_capacity_comparison.

[Bug 14335] Re: nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive

2008-04-01 Thread Mike Trim
It would only affect files on external drives, not fixed partitions that
are mounted via fstab. I wouldn't have thought that many normal users
would want to be executing files from external drives -- and if someone
did want to run a script on an external drive they could just use sh
/media/disk/whatever, or manually override the mount options for that
drive in its properties window.

Either way, the current behaviour -- whereby opening any text file (in
Nautilus) that is on or was copied from a vfat/ntfs drive displays a
confusing message -- is not very helpful to new/non-technical users.

Also, if the user has chosen to always run executable text files in the
file management preferences, then they could potentially inadvertently
execute a malicious script located on a portable flash drive for
example.

[Bug 14335] Re: nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive

2008-03-31 Thread Mike Trim
(copied from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/161859):

[In gconf] /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options on a clean
install of gutsy/feisty has umask=0077, which makes all files +x. This
means that files copied from a usb fat drive to the local drive will
have the +x bit set, so Nautilus will always prompt for Run/Open.

Instead, mount_options should include fmask=0177 and dmask=0077 so that
files are not +x.

This was the case in gutsy, I haven't tried hardy yet.
