[Bug 736970] [NEW] Evince generates large print jobs that never complete

2011-03-17 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

If I print a document (such as the one attached below), evince generates
large print jobs (~3MB for the 9 page doc attached) that takes forever
to print. While wating, a ghostscript process (gs) takes 100% cpu. This
process does not complete within a reasonable time (I cancelled the job
after waiting 20 minutes).

Using xpdf to print the same document results in a ~800kb printjob that
prints almost instantly.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2011-02-14 Thread Neilen Marais
In reply to #245 by The Fiddler:

I'm not sure if our experience differs or if I did not explain my
proposed solution well enough. I find that I have no difficulty getting
the resize pointer to appear momentarily while moving across the window
border, the problem lies in actually clicking while the resize pointer
is active. The proposed solution would fix that, since the resize
pointer will remain active for several pixels once activated.

In any case, so long as a working solution if shipped in Natty I guess
I'm satsified!

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]

2011-01-24 Thread Neilen Marais
I think a good modification to the invisible drag handle proposal
would be to rather use resize border resistance. This is a solution
that won't require more than 1 px of UI space to work well. How I
envisage it working is:

1) keep your arbitrarily small window border resize
2) Define a resize-resistance size, say 5 px
3) Once the user moves the pointer over the resize edge, the resize cursor will
appear
4) The resize cursor will remain active until the user moves the pointer at
lease 'resize-resistance' many pixels away from the resize edge
5) Click-and-hold while the resize cursor is active will result in window
resizing.

This seems to me like it should have 100% backward compatibility,
require only changes to the window manager, will be theme independent
and will still be easy to use.

[Bug 8764] Re: Disk doesn't show free space in 'filesystem'

2008-05-08 Thread Neilen Marais
On second thought... Filesystem is kind of a meta-concept that just
happens to include the root parition. What would probably make sense is
to summarise all the mounted filesystem's info somehow. This is actually
a surprisingly complicated issue to present completely logically in an
UI ;)

Perhaps it needs a new usability bug?

[Bug 153301] weather applet won't use automatic-proxy-configuration

2007-10-16 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

In gnome-network-preferences the proxy can be confgured as Direct
internet connection (i.e. None), Manual proxy configuration where the
host/port of the proxy server is specified and Automatic proxy
configuration where an URL pointing to a .pac proxy configuration is
specified.

If Automatic proxy configuration is specified gweather-applet-2
ignores that setting and uses the information provided in Manual proxy
configuration, even if it is disabled. To see this,

1) Change the manual proxy setting to point to an invalid proxy server
and restart gweather-applet-2.

Now the weather won't update

2) Activate a valid proxy configuration in Automatic proxy
configuration and restart gweather-applet-2.

The weather still won't update

3) Change the Manual configuration to point to a valid proxy server but
do not activate it. Keep using the Automatic configuration and restart
gweather-applet-2.

Now the weather will update using the deactivated Manual proxy
configuration rather than the activated automatic proxy.

Note the restart of gweather-applet-2 at each step is required because
of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/49736

This is running up to date Feisty/AMD64

[Bug 107025] Re: Multipage printing issue using even and odd.

2007-06-19 Thread Neilen Marais
I see this bug is still marked as need info. Peter Russel seems to
describe the issue clearly, and I also just ran into the same issue
trying to print a long document using pages per sheet = 2. I want to
print on both sides of the paper using a printer that doesn't support
duplex printing.

Using the definitions as:

Page: logical page as defined in the document
Sheet: physical piece of paper as loaded in the printer

If I have an 8 page document that I want to print using 2 sheets, I
want:

Pages per sheet: 2

Then selecting

+ Pages per sheet: 2
+ Only print: Odd sheets

I expect page 1 page 2 to be printed on sheet 1, page 5 6 to be
printed on sheet2. Now I turn the sheets upside down and reload them in
the printer, and select:

+ Pages per sheet: 2
+ Only print: Even sheets

I expect page 34 on sheet 1 and page 78 on sheet 2.

Is there anything else that can be clarified?

Please, I don't want rumours that Ubuntu users needlessly kill trees
because of deficient two-sided printing support to start spreading ;-)

Regards
Neilen

[Bug 119078] Excessive memory use with large images

2007-06-07 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

In a directory with several (13) large (~45MB, 1x14000px, 8bit
grayscale) tiff files (scanned documents) gthumb soon uses excessive
memory and makes the whole system unresponsive (about 30s after starting

core AMD, 2GB memory) running Feisty AMD64.

Memory use as reported by top:

[Bug 104893] gthumb unresponsive / unusably slow with RAW files in feisty

2007-04-09 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

The Feisty version of gthumb seems to support raw files, but when I open
a directory that contains a mix of .JPG and .NEF (Nikon RAW) files (my
camera is set to record both raw and JPG versions of each picture),
gthumb becomes unusably slow.

I can disable the display of NEF files using a filter, but this has two
problems:

A) If NEF files are present the filter UI is unresponsive
B) the space used by the filter UI prevents met from sizing the thumbnail view
as I'd like it.

It may be a bug, but when I turn off display of the file filter it also
stops working.

I'm running Feisty i386 on an old but not unreasonably slow PC (1GB
memory, AMD AthlonXP @ 1.8GHz).

The print libraries seem to be the same as Thomas's.

I tried printing to file with 2 to one and 4 to one settings enabled,
with both evince and evolution, using the generic PS driver. The output
is still only one page per page. I'll try with a real printer tomorrow,
but I doubt that will change anything...

Oi, why are my comments being repeated? I don't think *I*'m doing
anything wrong? Anyway, sorry for the annoyance.

[Bug 39567] Re: No driver presence

2006-06-13 Thread Neilen Marais
Hi

It seemed to be a breezy-dapper upgrade issue, with some required
package not being installed. I tried installing serveral cups/ppd
related packages and eventually it worked. Alas I forgot to note which
package fixed it :( I'm sorry I can't provide more useful information.

The bug linked upstream has been marked a duplicate of
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=309842, but I can't seem to
figure out how to change the upsteam bug link.

[Bug 44101] Re: [Dapper] gnome-sound-properties always defaults to first card

2006-06-08 Thread Neilen Marais
I have a similar problem with up to date Dapper. I have two sound cards
(snd_via82xx onboard and snd_ens1371 PCI). gnome-sound-properties shows
both cards, and let's me select both. However it does not activate the
selection, and if I run it again, it's back to the first card. Example

1) run gnome-sound-properties

The first sound card is selected (which one this seems to shuffle around
when booting)

2) Select the second card

3) Close gnome-sound-properties

Sound still plays out of the first sound card

4) run gnome-properties again

The first card is shown as selected

[Bug 39567] Re: No driver presence

2006-06-03 Thread Neilen Marais
I can confirm this bug. Just upgraded my AMD64 machine from breezy to
dapper. I'm trying to add a networked CUPS printer. I do the following:

1) $ gnome-cups-manager /tmp/gnome-cups-manager.log

2) double-click add new printer

3) select IPP network printer

4) enter the printer's URL

5) click forward

6) The driver list is _completely_ empty, no options, including RAW is
shown

The file /tmp/gnome-cups-manager.log contains the following single line:

** (gnome-cups-add:8649): WARNING **: IPP request failed with status
1280
