[Bug 1174162] Re: chrome-browser makes gnome-keyring-daemon use 100% cpu

2018-01-20 Thread Nelson Elhage
I am also seeing this bug, and am also an irccloud.com user. I can
confirm that if I refresh the IRCCloud tab, I see g-k-d spamming 100%
CPU for a minute or so thereafter.

I found https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=777206
which is a similar-ish bug about *chrome* CPU usage on IRCCloud that
suggests that IRCCloud might have a large number of hidden password
forms for some reason.

[Bug 938076] Re: Auto-lock on suspend is still needed when encrypting file system

2012-03-07 Thread Nelson Elhage
Given the security implications for users who do use full-disk
encryption, I strongly object to "wishlist" importance here -- this
represents a major regression, in my mind (and for my personal
machines), which will force me to work around in an annoying way if it
is not fixed.

In addition, I would argue that autologin is entirely the wrong setting
to look at here. Instead, if a user has configured the screensaver to
lock the screen when idle, then the machine should also lock on suspend,
and vice versa. This is certainly the behavior I had always assumed
Ubuntu had, and am surprised to hear it is not.

Autologin is a *very* poor proxy for "Is the state of this machine while
suspended worth password-protecting?". Encrypted disks are an obvious
reason, but there are also things like keys stored in the keyring that a
user has decrypted once with a password, but are now stored in-RAM in
the clear. Similarly, networked credentials like Kerberos tickets might
be present on a suspended, that would not be present if an attacker
rebooted the machine.

There is also the simpler issue of social conventions and expectations
-- My roommates and I might leave laptops around shared space in an
apartment with the implicit convention of "If the screen is locked,
don't use it; but if it unlocks when you poke it, feel free to use my
web browser to look something up". In such a case, the lock screen is
not a security mechanism at all, but just a social indicator of the
expected use for this laptop. Currently, I can control the lock behavior
if the machine is left idle for five minutes via the screensaver; Why
should I not be able to do so when the machine suspends? Or, even
better, why should it not be the same setting?

Yes. The result of printing using the unmodified generic PPD is
attached. I used the URL lpd:/// when configuring
the printer.

The print server is apparently running Hardy, so the bug may have been
fixed since then.

That appears to have the same behavior as without the "cupsEvenDuplex"
line (i.e. prints two copies, with a blank page after each).

That works correctly, but the printer also prints a blank page after
each copy.

> Set up a queue with the manufacturer-supplied PPD. Does this work?

That works as expected. I guess I will try to get the CUPS server
maintainers to update their PPDs to more correct ones.

I don't claim to understand very much about CUPS or printing, but it
still seems like a bug to me that using a more generic PPD will result
in duplexing multiple copies together. I would expect that the worst
it should cause is CUPS doing the copies itself, rather than having
the printer do it.

[Bug 325436] Re: "Copies" and "Two-sided" options interact incorrectly

2009-02-06 Thread Nelson Elhage
I'm printing through a remote CUPS server, so I'm not sure how to get a
copy of the PPD. The web interface lists the driver as "HP LaserJet 8150
Foomatic/Postscript (recommended)". The printer is a HP LaserJet 8150DN.
I believe it does implement multiple copies in hardware, although I
don't know if can collate.

I'm not sure if this is useful, but if I produce two duplex copies at the PS
level by inserting
<< /NumCopies 2 /Duplex true >> setpagedevice
just after the preamble in testpage-letter.ps, and print that document, it does
exhibits the correct behavior.

[Bug 325436] [NEW] "Copies" and "Two-sided" options interact incorrectly

2009-02-04 Thread Nelson Elhage
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

You need a printer with a duplexer. Load a single-page document in
something that prints using libgnome-print. I've tested evince and edit.
Set "Copies" to 2 on the "General" tab, and set "Two-sided" to "Long
edge" ("short edge" probably has the problem too), and print the
document.

Expected behavior: The printer prints two sheets of paper, each with the
document printed on one side.
Observed behavior: The printer prints a single sheet of paper, with the
document printed once on each side.

[Bug 287542] Re: vinagre crash with "BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)" when I try to connect to VNC server

2008-12-22 Thread Nelson Elhage
I get the same failure with all three of vinagre, gvncviewer, and
gtkvncviewer, so I suspect this is a libgtk-vnc bug.

`aptititude reinstall libgtk-vnc-1.0-0` doesn't help.

I'm trying to run it under gdb to break on gdk_x_error, but I can't find
that symbol either in in vinagre (rebuilt with debug symbols) or in any
library in /usr/lib/ (and just asking gdb to put a breakpoint there
doesn't work, either).
