[Bug 1968929] Re: Missing Wayland login option on NVIDIA systems

2022-04-24 Thread Nicholas Harvey
I can confirm on my Dell XPS15 9570 with hybrid Intel / NVIDIA graphics
in on-demand mode that the proposed fix has allowed me to select Wayland
in the log-in screen. Thanks.

[Bug 1967597] [NEW] Evolution cannot get Gmail authorisation

2022-04-02 Thread Nicholas Harvey
Public bug reported:

I have upgraded from 21.10 to 22.04 beta and am trying to set-up
Evolution.

Right now I am trying to add my Gmail account using the new account
wizard. I insert my name and gmail address and then Evolution tries to
connect to the GMail authorization page to allow me to enter my
password.

This opens in a new window and I would expect to see a small embedded
web page where I enter my GMail credentials. Instead the window opens
but where the embedded web page should be is instead just a small box
showing a URL to the Google service. This URL shortly disappears and I
am unable to proceed. All I can do is cancel out of the wizard and the
account never gets added.

One thought which may be relevant is I recently had MS Edge installed
and previously I have been able to add an account. I have recently
removed this and so instead have just the snap of Firefox installed.
Might there be a dependency of Evolution on a browser to provide this
web view, and in which case might it not be able to get it from the snap
of Firefox? Just a guess.

Thanks.

[Bug 1967596] [NEW] Gnome on-screen keyboard unreliable

2022-04-02 Thread Nicholas Harvey
Public bug reported:

I have upgrade from 21.10 to 22.04 Beta on my Microsoft Surface Go 2
tablet. I generally use it via the tough screen but I also have a type
cover I can attach.

There are a number of instances where the on-screen keyboard does not
appear or does not prove the required input. Examples are as follows:

- Firefox (snap) - trying to enter credentials into the Bitwarden
extension. Tapping into the text fields does not bring up the keyboard.

- Pycharm (snap) - creating a new project in the start-up wizard,
tapping in the filename box does not bring up the on screen keyboard.

- When you lock the tablet and then try to unlock it via the Gnome
unlock screen, tapping in the password box does bring up the keyboard
but any keys pressed do not appear in the password box.

All of the above can be worked around by attaching the Type Cover and
using the physical keyboard.

If I an collect any diagnostic data for this please send me the
instructions ans I'll see what I can do.

Thanks

[Bug 1965558] [NEW] Cannot change wallpaper by right-clicking image in dark theme

2022-03-18 Thread Nicholas Harvey
Public bug reported:

With the light theme enabled, you can set the desktop wallpaper by
right-clicking on an image file's icon in the file manager and selecting
"Set As Wallpaper". When you do this the Desktop wallpaper changes
straight away.

Now change to dark theme and repeat the above steps. The wallpaper never
changes. You can however change the wallpaper fine using Gnome settings
-> Appearance.

Thanks

[Bug 1910938] Re: Text is missing from shell panel and menus

2022-03-12 Thread Nicholas Schell
Just got a new Lenovo Thinkpad and using Ubuntu 20.04, and I think I'm
seeing a very similar issue. After leaving the laptop on for so long
eventually a ton of the text menues and displays either show NO text at
all, or half of the characters are missing. I'll attempt a screenshot
the next time it happens, it doesn't take longer than a day it seems as
already reported.

I also use Discord so I wonder if that is part of the culprit as well.
Will try using without Discord for about a day.

I have found a simple logout/login is enough to fix all text menues. So
it doesn't seem a full reboot is strictly necessary.

[Bug 1927948] Re: Windows switch monitor after resuming from sleep

2021-09-16 Thread Nicholas Klopfer-Webber
Its a shame a new issue was created for this. The problem has been
around for over 7 years and by creating a new ticket it looses just how
many people this affects.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1295267

In my case, I have 3 monitors connected to a Dell Latitude laptop. One of the
monitors seems to take longer to wake up than the others. As stated by others,
this delay causes some windows to move from one to another. Chrome's windows
are stable, but they implemented everything them selves so we can exclude them.
Gnome terminals, Remmina windows, KeePassX all move around.
It is related to the slow monitor issue because Gnome terminals often get
resized which indicates they have been migrated to another windows and squished
to fit the smaller resolution.

Maybe a fix would be to allow a delay to be set between waking up the
screen and when they appear so we don't trigger the shuffling of
windows. However really the issue is they are not being restored back
to their original position after monitor plug events.

[Bug 1856179]

2020-10-22 Thread Nicholas
Hi Clinton,

I came across your discussion with the GNOME folks when looking for a
solution to do the same operation myself.

Unfortunately I don't think the script you were given would have worked,
all the ideas were there, it just needed some tweaking.

I've attached my version here in case you still need it and in case it's
useful to WINE as e.g. the base for a utility script that could be
shipped for users wanting the same functionality.

Cheers

Marco Trevisan, as to your request, I am attaching logs that are
appearing in system journal while flameshort start. Debug level was been
raised as otherwise the journal was empty.

[Bug 1897754] Re: flameshot: The icon does not appear in the GNOME bar

2020-10-11 Thread Nicholas Guriev
I run into the issue when autostart feature of flameshot is activate. I
daresay there is some sort of race condition while system startup, and
the actual issue is in the gnome-shell-extension-appindicator package.
There is something in diff between 33-1 and 34-1 versions that is
breaking the app icon.

One possible workaround is to add a short delay before flameshort start
into the ~/.config/autostart/Flameshot.desktop file and make Exec
directive the following:

  Exec=sh -c 'sleep 1 && exec flameshot'

[Bug 1898479] Re: Shotwell: Russian translation is invalid

2020-10-06 Thread Nicholas Guriev
Bogdan, thank you for the suggestions. I have approved your strings and
tested an updated .mo file in Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa). Shotwell app
looks better now.

Although, a minor issue with declension of months remains, it does not
block the current fix. Moreover, it at present has no easy solution. So
I am going to report the issue as a separate bug.

[Bug 1872522] Re: Ubuntu software will not install .deb files on focal fossa

2020-04-14 Thread Nicholas A. Lasser
I can help complete his notes by adding details to this bug. The
specific issue is that when downloading .deb files from an external
source, i.e. www.chrome.com and you download the .deb to your computer
and double click the completed file it will in fact not open in software
to engage the software install process. I have found that double
clicking invokes the action of opening the archive with archive manager
and trying to "unzip" the file instead of install it. I have tried
manually setting the file to "open with" "Ubuntu Software". I have found
that installing with gdebi works and also by using dpkg -i via terminal.
Thanks I hope this helps.

[Bug 1850707] Re: "Data source "u...@gmail.com" does not support OAuth 2.0 authentication" shown each time Evolution starts

2020-02-11 Thread Nicholas Harvey
Spoke too soon. Please ignore my previous comment. This is still
happening, this time on Ubuntu 20.04 beta.

I see the error every time whe launching Evolution. Oddly, I do not see
this on my OpenSUSE Tumbleweed machine. Ubuntu has Evolution 3.34.1-3
whereas Tumbleweed has 3.34.3 in case that is relevant.

[Bug 1857744] [NEW] gnome shell fails to fullscreen unredirect

2019-12-27 Thread Nicholas Parkanyi
Public bug reported:

When playing videos in mpv set with fairly heavy settings under gnome
(x11), playback is choppy, even in fullscreen, after upgrading to 19.10.
Previously this would only occur in windowed playback, which makes me
strongly suspect it's an issue with compositor unredirecting. I
initially suspected https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/issues/1788 , but it seems the fix for that was already
backported. I installed arch linux on a separate partition and installed
the newer gnome shell 3.34.2, and with the same video and settings the
playback was smooth. I also tested under Ubuntu 18.04 and it was fine
there as well.

[Bug 1850707] [NEW] "Data source "u...@gmail.com" does not support OAuth 2.0 authentication" shown each time Evolution starts

2019-10-30 Thread Nicholas Harvey
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 19.10 Gnome fully patched.
MY GMail account is added via Gnome Online Accounts, with just Mail, Contacts
and Calendar selected.
Then, when I launch Evolution. I see an error displayed each time stating "Data
source "u...@gmail.com" does not support OAuth 2.0 authentication".

I am not sure whether two-factor authentication matters, but I have
tried disabling and re-enabling it and it has made no difference.

I can duplicate this on two separate installations so I assume this
problem could be widespread.

[Bug 1847650] [NEW] When dock is on the right hand side it covers the 'page dots' on the 'all applications' icon view

2019-10-10 Thread Nicholas Harvey
Public bug reported:

Steps to duplicate:
1. Set Ubuntu Dock to be on the right hand side of the screen.
2. Click on the 'Show Applications' button which will be at the bottom-right of
the screen.
3. When all of the application icons appear, you will notice that the 'dots'
which can be clicked for switch from one page of icons to another are on the
right of the screen underneath the Ubuntu dock. As such they cannot be clicked
on.

Expected result:
Can the dots either move to the left of the screen (where there is no dock) or
at least moved to a place where the dock does not obscure them?

Whilst this may not appear to be a major issue, I am running this on a
laptop using only a trackpad, and switching from one page of icons to
another is a but hit and miss as often a gentle swipe on my track pad
moves me two pages in either direction.

Thanks

[Bug 1846205] [NEW] Please add configuration option to show / hide mounted drives in Ubuntu Dock

2019-10-01 Thread Nicholas Harvey
Public bug reported:

Reference this forum thread:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2427998

I have upgraded from Disco to Eoan Beta and have found that the dock
permanently displays and icon for my Google Account's shared files. I
can make the icon disappear from the dock via Gnome Settings -> Online
Accounts -> Google -> Untick 'Files'. USB devices also show up in this
way.

It appears that this is a new Dock feature which can only be turned off
/ on via the command line thus:

I believe average users should be able to configure this via a GUI, so
can this be incorporated into the Gnome Control Center for the 20.04 LTS

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when some menu is open

2019-08-18 Thread Nicholas Klopfer-Webber
I can't believe this bug is still open. The report goes back more than
10 years.

Also the duplicate (bug 4286) mentioned above is incorrect, it points an
avifile issue.

This is a incredibly high security issue that should be fixed
immediately. Not only all the examples mentioned above by meany people,
but the more concerning case is when you close the screen on a laptop.
Even with lock screen turned on (I'm using the default gnome with
Ubuntu) when you open the lid again no password is required. It makes
encrypting your disk a bit pointless.

Please look into it.

[Bug 1806402] [NEW] Chinese input fails to input if you don't select 1st candidate and persists

2018-12-03 Thread Nicholas Cheng
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1728143] Re: Screen freezes after waking from suspend with Gnome on Wayland

2017-10-31 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Okay, I will try this with a fresh install of Ubuntu 17.10 and provide
the necessary logs soon. I should be able to use the provided script
over ssh, thanks. The problem with GDM freezing on Wayland after system
resume/wakeup has been occurring ever since I ran the beta builds of
17.10, but it's clearly not fixed. I've been relatively busy lately, my
apologies.

[Bug 1728145] [NEW] gnome-terminal does not fill screen when window snapping on Wayland in Ubuntu 17.10

2017-10-27 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Public bug reported:

When using a Wayland gnome-session or Wayland ubuntu-session in Ubuntu
17.10, gnome-terminal (v3.24.2 is the version in the 17.10 repositories)
does not fill the screen at all when snapping the window to the right or
left side. There are large gaps on the right and bottom edges of the
terminal window in Wayland. On the same computer, with the same version
of gnome-terminal in an Xorg gnome-session or Xorg ubuntu-session, the
window fills screen space entirely and there is no problem. I am not
using display scaling or hidpi features at all, my display resolution is
set at default 1080p. This needs to be fixed or I'm ditching gnome-
terminal.

Expected behavior: gnome-terminal window should fill right/left of screen when
snapped to corner in a Wayland session
What happened instead: gnome-terminal window does not fill screen space when
snapped to right or left edge of desktop on Wayland session, there are large
gaps below and to the right of the snapped window on either side.

[Bug 1728143] [NEW] Screen freezes after waking from suspend with Gnome on Wayland

2017-10-27 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Public bug reported:

It appears that using Xorg instead of Wayland is the only way to fix
this problem on Ubuntu 17.10. For some odd reason, whenever I wake my
computer from suspend (especially after an extended period of time
asleep) using Gnome in a Wayland session (gnome-session and stock
ubuntu-session alike), my screen freezes completely on whatever was last
there before suspending and I can't get any IO response at all. Nothing,
the screen is totally frozen. I am also unable to exit into a recovery
shell or kill GDM or gnome-session/ubuntu-session locally. I also can't
seem to find any traces or indications for the freeze in the syslog, or
maybe I'm just not sure where to look. I believe this is a problem with
GDM on Wayland, not kernel related, as it happens on a totally stock
install and when I use an upgraded/downgraded kernel. It literally
necessitates restarting my computer. This problem is nonexistent when
using Xorg instead of Wayland with GDM. Anyone else have this issue on
Ubuntu 17.10 or figure out a solution better than simply switching to
Xorg? I should clarify that I am not using nvidia drivers, I'm using
Intel integrated graphics on a core-i7 5500U.

Ubuntu 17.10 uses gnome-session v3.26.1.
Expected behavior: When waking computer from suspend, expect GDM lock prompt
and log back in.
What happened instead: When waking computer from suspend, screen and IO is
completely frozen, necessitating a force-shutdown.

[Bug 1681295] [NEW] Problem in network-manager-openvpn, openvpn fails during and after downloads.

2017-04-09 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Public bug reported:

So I've been using OpenVPN through the network-manager-openvpn package
integrated into the network manager GUI. I experienced an odd problem
where consistently, during or after downloading (in this case, I tested
by just downloading the kernel tarball from kernel.org repeatedly, which
is around 90MB) Every single time, without fail, the openvpn client
would fail and my connection would go dead. To reconnect, I would have
to manually restart the network manager.

Now, I played around with .conf files and the CLI openvpn client and noticed
EXACTLY the same behavior happening. I eventually arrived to the conclusion
that the flag or option "auth-nocache" would cause a connection reset after or
during downloads and streaming. I then got to reading the openvpn man pages and
I stumbled across this message (you can easily find it by going 'man openvpn |
grep nocache') about the guaranteed failure of key renegotiation if
auth-user-pass and auth-nocache were used together:
" Further, using --daemon together with --auth-user-pass (entered
on console) and --auth-nocache will fail as soon as key renego‐
  tiation (and reauthentication) occurs."

When I removed auth-user-pass from my .conf files, the problem went away. Then
I wondered. Now what if...network-manager-openvpn was actually passing both
flags to openvpn? Then I downloaded the source tarball and found that indeed,
this exact thing is happening on a SINGLE line. See line 1380 of
network-manager-openvpn-1.1.93/src/nm-openvpn-service.c
"add_openvpn_arg (args, "--auth-nocache");"

So I decided to comment out that single line. I then rebuilt the
packages network-manager-openvpn and network-manager-openvpn using
'dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -nc', installed them, and tested downloading
the source kernel repeatedly to see if the connection would hold. It
does! Literally commenting out ONE line fixed weeks worth of extreme
annoyance repeatedly reconnecting to my vpn. This issue is rather
annoying and needs to be fixed so openvpn doesn't keep cutting out. I've
attached a patch for the source.

[Bug 1138874] Re: high contrast window buttons NOT high contrast

2016-02-12 Thread Nicholas Joll
On my system (Linux Mint Cinnamon), the icons do not differ between
maximised and non-maximised state - except that, irritatingly, the
hovered-over version of the maximise icon is *very dark* when the window
is maximised.

I wonder whether the poster means 'low contrast (grey and white) when
*the window lack focus*'. That description fits my system.

Re: [Bug 1491666] Re: System Monitor hangs when network offline

2015-09-09 Thread Nicholas Joll
Thanks Timo. Let me, though, and briefly, restate my reasoning about the
network problem: this problem makes it hard - impossible for some people
- to do something many of them will have a strong need to do; therefore,
whatever its origin, Mint should try to fix or work-around it. Compare:
if I run a hotel and the government should provide my electricity, and
yet fails so to do, then, while I wait for the government to fulfil its
obligations, I had better install a generator. For otherwise my guests
will leave.

Thanks for all that. About Ubuntu: there is a limit to how many bug
trackers I will create accounts for. I am user, not a developer. And even
if this networking problem (in its wider version, whereby one needs special
software and fiddly config to make auto mounted shares work properly) owes
to Ubuntu, I think Mint needs to fix it. Relatedly: if there is a better
system monitor, why not include it, as the default, in Mint?

Patches most welcome! This was filed in the wrong spot. As software
changes, we have to maintain the tests. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/ContributingTestcases/Manual for help,
it's as easy as writing out what you've said above. Thanks for the
report!

coming so soon on Ubuntu 12.x.

[Bug 1167560] [NEW] Audio preview for split track is muted

2013-04-10 Thread Nicholas Skaggs
Public bug reported:

Doing an audio preview inside the split track menu for an audio cd
doesn't allow you to set the volume. In addition by default it seems to
be muted.

To reproduce:

Launch brasero
Start a new audio cd
Add a music file
Select the music file and click split track
Click the green play arrow
--- no sound is produced
Click the volume slider next to the track
--- it's set to muted, but doesn't allow adjustment

[Bug 1115886] Re: Can't change wallpaper unless /org/gnome/desktop/background/show-desktop-icons is true.

2013-02-04 Thread Nicholas J. Alonge
I couldn't replicate the problem of not being able to change the
wallpaper, but toggling that setting causes problems with the fade
animation of changing the wallpaper.

I opened dconf-editor, and it looks like the box was unchecked by
default (even though in gnome-tweak-tool, have file manager handle the
desktop is on). I checked it to enable it (org.gnome.desktop.background
.show-desktop-icons) then changed the wallpaper and it worked as
expected. When I toggled that setting off again I was still able to
change the wallpaper but it didn't fade in between wallpapers, it was an
abrupt change. It also disabled nautilus handling the desktop.

[Bug 1010705] [NEW] gnome-control-center display applet never appears

2012-06-08 Thread Nicholas Skaggs
Public bug reported:

the display applet inside gnome-control-center refuses to load. Click on
it causes the program to endlessly loop (I can't even xkill it, it just
respawns) stealing focus each time it respawns. minimizing, or closing
the app causes it to respawn in the middle of the screen with focus,
display the applets.

[Bug 885492] Re: p11-kit: couldn't load module: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so

2012-05-20 Thread Nicholas
Found a 100% working fix:

1) Install getlibs

wget
https://launchpad.net/~jcollins/+archive/jaminppa/+build/1482994/+files/getlibs_2.06-0ubuntu1%7Eppa2_all.deb

sudo dpkg -i getlibs_2.06-0ubuntu1~ppa2_all.deb

2) Install the 32bit lib

getlibs -p gnome-keyring:i386

3) Make the symbolic link

sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so

Now run your Crossover/Wine app and the error is gone.
