[Bug 146206] Re: files are copied to a local directory before being extracted

I wrote about this 4 years ago.

anymore but it's sad to see this stupidity still hasn't been fixed.

Re: [Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)

I believe this bug is somehow related to a change in gnome-
panel_1:2.29.5.1-0ubuntu1 when the building of applets as shared

 * debian/rules:
 - don't build in process applets during the unstable cycle so crash issues
should be easier to debug and reported on the corresponding binary

It seems to me that due to this change, the notification area icons get
the background of the program's main window instead of the panel's
 background.

 Compiling gnome-panel with '--with-in-process-applets=notification-area'
in debian/rules (and no other changes), fixes this bug for me.

I have uploaded modified gnome-panel packages to my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~cyfex/+archive/ppa in case others want to try
this (you need gnome-panel and gnome-panel-data; killall bonobo-
 activation-server and gnome-panel after installation)

Actually using --with-in-process-applets=notification-area isn't
necessary. In previous releases it's been compiled with
--with-in-process-applets=all but this line has been commented out in
Lucid. Simply uncommenting it and recompiling is enough to fix it.

[Bug 438520] Re: Right Alt key is always selected under key to choose 3rd level

2009-10-26 Thread Nick B.
This may be a bug in the debian-installer. I can't reproduce this with
the live CD. When installed from the alternate CD or mini iso,
XKBOPTIONS=lv3:ralt_switch is added to /etc/default/console-setup.
Commenting out that option and rebooting fixes the issue, but I'm unsure
why that was set in the first place.

[Bug 447784] [NEW] Text on devices with long names is wrapped inconsistently

2009-10-09 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Devices with long names show up on the desktop with the text wrapped
inconsistently

Steps to reproduce:
1. Plug in a device that has a long name
2. See it show up on the desktop

What should happen:
The text should be aligned nicely in the same way that is done for files and
folders

What happens instead:
The text is wrapped in a very inconsistent way.

I've attached a screenshot of an example of this. I even created a new
folder with the same exact name as seen in the screenshot and the text
was wrapped in a very consistent and neat manner.

[Bug 438520] [NEW] Right Alt key is always selected under key to choose 3rd level

2009-09-28 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

On a fresh install of Karmic, under the keyboard layout options, the
right Alt key is selected under Key to Choose 3rd Level. I'm not even
sure what the 3rd level is, as I've never needed this setting before. On
Jaunty, there is nothing set under this option. As a result on Karmic,
this breaks the right Alt key. For example right Alt+F2 doesn't do
anything. But when you try to uncheck this option, it doesn't remember
the setting. The next time you open the layout options, it's checked
again. There seems to be no way to uncheck this option.

What should happen
1. Open System Preferences Keyboard
2. Go to the Layouts tab
3. Click Layout Options
4. Expand Key to Choose 3rd Level
5. Uncheck Right Alt
5. Close the Layout Options window
6. Reopen Layout Options
7. Nothing should be checked under Key to Choose 3rd Level

What happens instead
Right Alt is still selected after unchecking it, closing the Layout Options
window and reopening it.

[Bug 428456] [NEW] Screen will not stay in DPMS sleep

2009-09-12 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

After upgrading to Karmic, my screen will not stay in DPMS sleep after
the time I have specified in the power management preferences. I have
the screen set to turn off after 10 minutes. It does turn off after 10
minutes but a second later it turns back on. This has the side affect of
preventing automatic suspend and hibernate after the specified time
because the system is never marked as idle long enough.

[Bug 375260] [NEW] gnome-power-manager doesn't properly detect power state

2009-05-11 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

gnome-power-manager doesn't correctly detect the power state on my
laptop (HP Pavilion dv6500t). When I pull the AC plug out it detects
that it was unplugged because the battery icon shows up in the
notification area. However when I hover over the icon it still says that
it's running on AC power. This makes the on battery power management
settings invalid since it still thinks it's running on AC. i.e. the
screen doesn't dim, the screen doesn't turn off after 15 minutes as
specified for On battery power etc.

Steps to reproduce
1. Unplug AC power cord
2. Wait for battery icon to appear in the notification area
3. Hover over the icon with the mouse and notice it says that it's running on
AC when it's clearly running on battery
4. Notice that none of the on battery power preferences take effect since it
still thinks it's on AC power

What should happen
Batter icon should appear and indicate that it is running on battery power and
on battery power preferences should be in effect.

This might be specific to this model of laptop as I have another laptop
I can't reproduce this on.

[Bug 351984] [NEW] nautilus not using ssh keys for sftp

2009-03-30 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Since I upgraded to Jaunty, Nautilus doesn't seem to use my ssh keys for
stfp connections anymore. I have a few sftp bookmarks in my Nautilus
bookmarks and in Intrepid I could just click those and Nautilus would
connect since I had the key in the key agent. Now in Jaunty when I try
to connect I get a popup asking for my password. This is not the usual
ssh passphrase dialog. What I've noticed is that when connecting to
servers that still have password authentication enabled I must enter the
password for my user on the server or else it rejects me. It will not
accept my ssh key passphrase. But on servers that have disabled password
authentication an only accept key authentication I can enter my ssh key
passphrase and it will accept it.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/nautilus

Package: nautilus 1:2.26.0-0ubuntu4

When I do gvfs-mount sftp://n...@192.168.1.2 it gives me
Enter passphrase for key
Password:

This particular server only accepts key based authentication.

When I do the same thing only for a different server that still allows
for password authentication I get
gvfs-mount sftp://u...@host
Enter password
Password:

even though I have a key set up for that server

When I try to ssh to any of these servers from the command line it
connects without asking me anything because the keys are in the key
agent.

I also tested the gvfs-mount commands on an Intrepid machine and it
connected without asking me anything provided the keys were in the key
agent.

[Bug 45544] Re: Notifications overlap the bottom panel.

2008-11-21 Thread Nick B.
I've been looking into this and figured it out that the problem is
somewhere in the 03_fix_xinerama_stack_c.patch patch for the
notification-daemon. I built packages of the new release of libnotify
0.4.5 and notification-daemon 0.4.0 in my PPA hoping the fix would be in
the new release, but after installing them I saw the same problem. I
rebuilt notification-daemon without the 03_fix_xinerama_stack_c.patch
patch and the notifications don't overlap the panels anymore. It might
be better though to figure out where the problem is exactly in the patch
instead of removing the entire patch.

I've got the same problem here. It seems it just started doing this. It
was fine for a long time. The screensaver won't turn off by moving the
mouse or even by touching the touchpad. The only way to get it to turn
off is to press a key on the keyboard. Though I have noticed that if you
set the screensaver to Blank Screen it will respond to mouse movement.

[Bug 219785] [NEW] [Hardy] Nautilus does not give warning when copying a folder into itself

2008-04-19 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Nautilus does not give a warning if you attempt to copy a folder into itself.
This is a regression from Gutsy. In Gutsy you would get a warning if you
attempted to do this.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open your home directory, right click on the Desktop folder and select Copy.
2. Right click on the actual Desktop and attempt to paste it there. (be warned
this could eat up your hard drive very fast)

What should happen: You should get a warning that you cannot perform
this operation.

What actually happens: There is no warning (as there used to be in Gutsy) and
it actually proceeds with the operation. It will create a folder on the
Desktop called Desktop which has a tree structure like so:
Desktop/Desktop/Desktop/Desktop/Desktop/Desktop/Desktop/Desktop

have Evolution set up with my Gmail account and when I go to check for
new mail it will randomly crash as soon as it connects to the pop
server. It seems totally random and I had a hard time getting a
backtrace because of its randomness, but I finally caught it.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Evolution.
2. Click the Send / Receive button.
Now if you're lucky right before the password prompt comes up it will crash.
As far as I know, I have not found a sure way to reproduce this. It's very
random.

I'm seeing the exact same errors. Nautilus takes up 100% of the CPU and dumps a

If I kill Nautilus then trackerd starts going crazy and I have to kill trackerd
as well.
I have seen this on 2 separate computers one with desktop effects one without.
I haven't been able to find a way to reproduce this though. Seems totally
random. I'll try and get a backtrace if I can.

I also noticed that this will hang Conky if you have a disk monitor for
that drive. I guess I could just remove it for now, but I like to keep
an eye on my hard drive.

[Bug 133567] Re: [gutsy] long delay in nautilus on first access to vfat drive

2007-10-03 Thread Nick B.
I thought maybe something had gone wrong with the upgrade, so I downloaded the
latest daily live CD and it's still happening on the live CD.
Like Xavi Francisco said, the length of time Nautilus hangs is related to the
size of the drive. It's barely noticeable with a 2GB USB flash drive, but with
a hard drive that is a few hundred GB in size Nautilus hangs for many minuets.

2007-10-02 Thread Nick B.
I found out that I can access the drives through other programs while
Nautilus is frozen. I have all my music on my external drive and I can
play it off that drive with a media player while Nautilus is frozen. I
can also initially access the drive without any problems using a
different file browser other than Nautilus.

[Bug 147931] Nautilus freezes when opening external hard drive

2007-10-01 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When trying to access an external hard drive with Nautilus, Nautilus
freezes. I have to Force Quit Nautilus and then wait for it to restart.
Then everything is fine. This only happens with an external hard drive.
Not flash drives. I tried to see if this would happen with Konqueror but
everything was fine there. This seems like a Nautilus bug.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Plug in an external USB hard drive.
2. Reboot the computer. Leave the drive connected
3. After logging in try to open the hard drive. Nautilus should freeze

Running up to date Gutsy

Yes, I've gotten it to work correctly with Metacity. I think it has
something to do with the SyncToVblank option in Compiz. I'm going to try
disabling SyncToVblank in Compiz in both user accounts and try to switch
users.

[Bug 95368] Re: (feisty) unmounting a device icon on desktop gives an error dialog

2007-09-16 Thread Nick B.
I was getting this same error.
Cannot Unmount Volume
Cannot Remove Directory

Removing /media/.hal-mtab fixed the problem.
It does seem to only happen when there are stale entries in /media/.hal-mtab
I'm guessing it was from having multiple drives plugged in.
