I just made the updates, without restarting (because I use 'Try Ubuntu').
Now it does launch!

[Bug 503577] Re: g-p-m brightness not applied anymore after rebooting

2010-02-22 Thread Paul Dufresne
The real issue here is that when pressing the brightness keys, the brightness
value in gconf is not updated
I think you are oversimplifying this bug.
Well you do have much more experience than me but for me, there seems to be 3
sub-bugs in this bug:

1) Normal drivers are unable to update the brightness of the LCD, that
seems to explain why step two of the workaround does not work until step
one is done. Also bug description suggest that there is no way to change
brightness even with mouse in gnome-power-manager, until the
acpi_backlight=vendor is passed to the kernel.

2) Brightness keys are not recognized with normal drivers (I suspect
scancodes could be different with vendor drivers than normal ones, but
this is just my hypothesis). Still, it need vendor drivers to work, as
explain in initial description. But it is also possible that vendor
drivers do direct brightness adjustments directly, that would explain
why gconf never see the changes.

3) Gnome-power-manager settings (set by mouse) is not saved, but is
temporarily value. According to documentation, that would be normal, but
documentation seems to fail to explain how to set a saved 'normal' value
for the brightness. I don't know.

Searching 'brightness' for bugs result in lots of bugs, that seems to
confirm that this is not only happenning on Dell mini 10. (Well, I did
about one month ago, but I expect things have not changed much since).

[Bug 503577] Re: g-p-m brightness not applied anymore after rebooting

2010-02-22 Thread Paul Dufresne
I am trying to summarise some info take from other bugs here.

In bug #230421, we learn that the following changed in the acpi-support package
in Ubuntu 9.10:
  * Drop events/video_brightness{down,up}, video_brightness{up,down}.sh: at
least some platforms that use these ACPI sequences are seeing them
correctly translated to input events, so those users will see duplicate
events unless we drop them. LP: #178860.

Mike, can you please run the 'acpi_listen' command, and report here any
output produced when you press the brightness keys?

This bug also suggest to look at the
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting page.

Bug #385723 seems the general missing backlight control for Linux
kernel.

Bug #320874, is very interesting, and was fixed in kernel 2.6.29:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12249 (reading fast, could be BIOS
related).

Bug #388216 (because KMS)
What I call sub-bug 3, (brightness not saved) is in bug #35223, and they did
fill a bug directly to gnome project:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335673

Bug #131650, brightness keys not working on Vaio SZ-140p.
Sony Vaio have LOTS of bug reports...

Bug #223954 (brightness controls still has major bugs) (mostly about going back
to 100% when opening lid), asked to do:
Thanks for your report but we need more information about your bug. Please, run
gnome-power-bugreport.sh and gconftool -a /apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight.

Bug #406515, for Lenovo, but showing how to determine keycodes, also
link to Lnux kernel bugs.

Ok, I'll stop there for now, just to show that there is many kernel
issues going on around this.

[Bug 406515] Re: [Karmic] Brightness fn keys lost functionality (multiple laptops)

2010-01-17 Thread Paul Dufresne
From bug #503577, on a Dell mini 10, 'apci_backlight=vendor' kernel parameter
seems to make it work.
acpi_backlight=[HW,ACPI]
acpi_backlight=vendor
acpi_backlight=video
If set to vendor, prefer vendor specific driver
(e.g. thinkpad_acpi, sony_acpi, etc.) instead
of the ACPI video.ko driver.

[Bug 501323] Re: HP DV5 - Can't suspend, get a Lock Screen instad of suspend

2010-01-15 Thread Paul Dufresne
It could be link to relatively old bug #301353, which suggest (from
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12113#c13) that bios update
from HP (F21) solves the problem.

Can you determinate the BIOS version you have?
maybe 'dmidecode' command can help you.

A message on HP forum from May 29, 2009: HP: Please fix the dv5 BIOS!
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Hardware/HP-Please-fix-the-dv5-BIOS/m-p/71945

From
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?sw_lang=17lc=endlc=encc=uslang=enproduct=3755994
There seems to be a firmware update for some Hard Disks of this model, which is
different than a BIOS update, but maybe usefull. Ah... maybe not, that seems to
fix something else:
- Fixes an issue where following error message is displayed after powering ON
the laptop: 1720 - SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure (Failing attr: 0¤).

[Bug 492832] Re: Cannot get laptop panel brightness after upgrade to Jaunty samsung nc10

2010-01-15 Thread Paul Dufresne
Reporter of bug #503577, suggest that adding kernel boot options:
apci_brightness=vendor although I believe it must be:
acpi_backlight=vendor because I don't find acpi_brightness kernel option.
As explained in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8612908postcount=828
But I guess it has to be considered a workaround, FOR A DIFFERENT HARDWARE THAN
YOURS, but may be worth to try.

[Bug 490152] Re: screen doesn't dim when switching to battery

I think it could be a duplicate of bug #384304

That would means your bug would happens when your battery if almost
full.

Also, the output of devkit-power -d would show near the end:
  on-battery:  no
when in fact you are on-battery (AC unplug).

Could you confirm that?

[Bug 501323] Re: HP DV5 - Can't suspend, get a Lock Screen instad of suspend

2010-01-14 Thread Paul Dufresne
As I understand the results you got from 'apport-collect 501323' , a new
window or tab should have opened in your browser executing this, or you
could copy the link to the authorization page; but you did not seems to
have given the permission to apport-collect to run on this web page.

I suggest you retry 'apport-collect 501323' but take time to authorize
apport in the web page, before continuing.

Also, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager seems to suggest that
you try:
dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.Hal
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Suspend int32:0

at the $ prompt of Accessoires/Terminal... If it does the same problem
that way, that would suggest that this is a kernel bug rather than a
gnome-power-manager bug. Maybe I will mark this bug to the kernel too,
so that apport-collect also collect information for a kernel bug if that
becomes one.

[Bug 500666] Re: Toshiba M505-S4972 The Fan does not work unless i suspend and bring it back up

2010-01-14 Thread Paul Dufresne
I note from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1282161:
I purchased new Toshiba Satellite M505-S4945 laptop and installed 64-bit
Jaunty. Everything works great except that the fan cannot be turned on due to
broken ACPI tables from Phoenix BIOS. The fan makes a big difference (40C vs
70+C).

I found an omnibook module from sourceforge that is supposed to fix some
issues with Satellite laptops, but I was unsuccessful compiling it,
probably because the types of supported laptops do not include Satellite
M505. I am not a developer nor a programmer, so I cannot fix the source
code of omnibook module myself to add my specific model nor can I find
it from terminal.

They seems to get to the conclusion that:
$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points
critical (S5): 108 C
passive: 101 C: tc1=30 tc2=30 tsp=50 devices=CPU0 CPU1
active[0]: 94 C: devices=FAN0
active[1]: 82 C: devices=FAN1
active[2]: 72 C: devices=FAN2
active[3]: 52 C: devices=FAN3
active[4]: 42 C: devices=FAN4  is wrong.

What is the result of: cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points for
you in a terminal window?

I believe this is more a kernel bug. So I'll update the package.

[Bug 504811] Re: display server is broken

2010-01-14 Thread Paul Dufresne
As I read the link you have given (
http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/08/17/gnome-power-manager-and-
blanking-removal-of-bodges/ ), then going to:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/413168
I would suspect that this bug was fixed in:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/413168/comments/23
xorg-server (2:1.6.3-1ubuntu7) karmic; urgency=low

  * Add 187_lastdeviceeventtime-no-reset.patch: Avoids resetting IDLETIME on
DPMS events. Cherrypick from upstream.
(LP: #397839)

Can you give the output of:
apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core
in a terminal window?

[Bug 503577] Re: Gnome power manager ignores screen settings

2010-01-14 Thread Paul Dufresne
Well, in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8612908postcount=828
suggest that: adding nolapic allows to use dell smbios for changing
backlight (brightness) in grub.

Although I have not used gnome-power-manager brightness feature, I believe it
is not a bug.
If I read:
http://library.gnome.org/users/gnome-power-manager/stable/applets-general.html.en
 I understand this is a temporary brightness level.

So, I'll mark this bug as invalid. Please feel free to reopen if you
think I misunderstood.

[Bug 490152] Re: screen doesn't dim when switching to battery

2010-01-14 Thread Paul Dufresne
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.
Could you connect AC plug, then type in a terminal window:
lshal -m  lshal.log.txt
Then unplug AC, then do Ctrl-C in the terminal window.
If bug have happened, attach the generated lshal.log.txt, else reconnect AC
plug and retry (lshal -m lshal.log.txt).

This is taken and adapted from

[Bug 418270] Re: totem crashed with SIGSEGV in g_object_set_valist()

2009-08-26 Thread Paul Dufresne
Unless I am missing something, there is probably no need to attach a

Still knowing if this is reproducible, if sound works normally
elsewhere, seems important to know.

[Bug 259385] Re: [i845] Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG, i845, (and i945GM?) video cards

2009-04-04 Thread Paul Dufresne
This bug was fixed by adding this line in /usr/bin/compiz:
T=$T 8086:3577 8086:2562 # Intel 830MG, 845G (LP: #259385)

This tells to not allow compiz to run on intel 845 and 830 chipsets.
(use metacity instead I thinks).
Like writeen in the file, read http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Hardware/Blacklist
for more infos.

I believe glenric is a better way to fix this bug.
But as this bug is closed, I open a new one to suggest to use the glenric's
workaround:

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-03 Thread Paul Dufresne
I am happy to see that things work for you now.
Like I said in a previous comment, when I remove [Desktop Entry] in a .desktop
file on Hardy, it does not segfaults, so the problem should be gone in Hardy.

About your Nvidia card, it is unlikely to be because of your monitor, as
monitor don't need driver (as far as I know), X knows how to 'speak'
with monitor, and query size, resolutions supported, etc. (It read a 128
bytes structure called EDID transmitted from the monitor). That said, I
have seen bugs where Samsung monitors's EDID were giving bad size,
giving huge fonts.

You could try to ask help on:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+questions?field.search_text=FX+5500field.sort=RELEVANCYfield.sort-empty-marker=1field.actions.search=Searchfield.language=frfield.language=enfield.language-empty-marker=1field.status=OPENfield.status=NEEDSINFOfield.status=ANSWEREDfield.status=SOLVEDfield.status-empty-marker=1
and use blue 'ask a question' in upper right.

Or maybe this forum thread can help you:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=637365

But your Nvidia card does not concern this bug, so, we should stop
discussing it here.

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
Hi Bill!
Do you have g_key_file_get_string_list: assertion `group_name != NULL' failed
too?
If not, I would probably consider it a different bug, that should be reported
in a new bug report.
In that case, you may want to explore in GUI /var/crash, and 'double-'click the
crash file to be guided in reporting bug.

Well, while trying to learn what is update-desktop-database, I extracted code I
believe to be the culprit (seems the same in Gutsy and Hardy):
static void
process_desktop_file (const char  *desktop_file,
  const char  *name,
  GError **error)
{
  GError *load_error;
  GKeyFile *keyfile;
  char **mime_types;
  int i;

  keyfile = g_key_file_new ();

  load_error = NULL;
  g_key_file_load_from_file (keyfile, desktop_file,
 G_KEY_FILE_NONE, load_error);

  if (load_error != NULL)
{
  g_propagate_error (error, load_error);
  return;
}

  mime_types = g_key_file_get_string_list (keyfile,
   g_key_file_get_start_group (keyfile),
   MimeType, NULL, load_error);

  g_key_file_free (keyfile);

As I have no clue at all what that code does, I'll need a bit of time to
undestand it. ;-)

That said, when I do:
sudo apt-get remove yelp
on my Hardy system, I get no error at all.

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
Oh Bill, could you also do:
 ls -l /usr/share/applications/*.desktop  ~/ls.out
and attach the resulting ls.out to this report? Please!

I suspect a file among that to not be to root:root, but as I have no
idea what I am doing, well, ...

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
Hum, it is very likely that one of your .desktop files have lost it's first
line:
[Desktop Entry]
causing g_key_file_get_start_group (keyfile) to return NULL.

The previously posted code suppose there is always a first group (that is a
[section] in the .desktop file) which is plain wrong.
The could should be something similar to:
  if (start_group=g_key_file_get_start_group (keyfile) != NULL)
mime_types = g_key_file_get_string_list (keyfile,
   start_group,
   MimeType, NULL, load_error);
  else /* Warning! your file ... have no [Desktop Entry] at the begginning */

or something similar (I never programmed GLib code, so I'll let
developer write some good code).

So Bill, it is not necessary to post info, but it would not be bad if
you do.

I'll mark this as affecting Hardy too, and confirm the bug now.

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
I was hoping that the update-desktop-database.out file would be created even if
I was expecting it to segfault.
Maybe you can just sudo update-desktop-database -v
That should give something like:
Search path is now: [/usr/local/share/applications, /usr/share/applications]
File '/usr/share/applications/gnome-settings-mouse.desktop' lacks MimeType key
File '/usr/share/applications/freecell.desktop' lacks MimeType key
File '/usr/share/applications/gnotravex.desktop' lacks MimeType key
File '/usr/share/applications/sound-juicer.desktop' lacks MimeType key
File '/usr/share/applications/gnome-power-preferences.desktop' lacks MimeType
key

up to some file, then segfault.
It would be cool if you could *attach* (go to the web site link, and to the
bottom you will find 'Include an attachment' box) the last file listed just
before the segfault.

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
Bill, it is possible that what I suggested you to do don't work.
At least Debian poster seems to say it does not work that way for him to find
corrupted .desktop files.

I am speaking to developers here.
I WAS WRONG.
I have deliberately broken my
/usr/share/applications/screensavers/flipscreen3d.desktop file by removing the
[desktop] line.
Then:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo update-desktop-database
Could not parse file
'/usr/share/applications/screensavers/flipscreen3d.desktop': Key file does not
start with a group
File '/usr/share/applications/totem.desktop' contains invalid MIME type '-e'
that is missing a slash
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

So Hardy SEEMS (I am slowly becoming more prudent) to not be affected.

I tried to compare Gutsy and Hardy and they seems the same to me.
After:
  mime_types = g_key_file_get_string_list (keyfile,
   g_key_file_get_start_group (keyfile),
   MimeType, NULL, load_error);
Code does:
  g_key_file_free (keyfile);

  if (load_error != NULL)
{
  g_propagate_error (error, load_error);
  return;
}

I have a new ... *hypothesis*
I now believe that this code is right.
But that there was an assert in the Glib for the g_key_file_get_start_group in
Gutsy that have been removed in Hardy.
So that now g_propagate_error do work (and was not going up to there in Gutsy
because of the hypothetical assert).

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
Hi again Bill!
You could try:
grep -r -L \[Desktop Entry\] /usr/share/applications/*|grep .desktop
This is supposed to show .desktop files that don't contain [Desktop Entry]
which would in my
opinion be the cause of your bug.

If you find zero, it probably means I made some bad assumption.
If you find one or two, then they are likely to be the cause of your problem.
Please attach it (or them).
If you find a lot, then, again I must have make an other bad assumption.

[Bug 69592] Re: Gnome Audio Preference crash when testing sound capture

2007-12-07 Thread Paul Dufresne
I am on Hardy and have a very similar problem.
When I press the 'Test' button for sound capture, I have an error window that
appears and that do not go away when pressing the close button.

I am giving the message I get in command line, as it is almost identical to the
text in window, but also give where the error happens:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gnome-sound-properties
sound-properties-Message: Error running pipeline 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert
! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat': Failed to create stream: (null)
[pulsesink.c(388): gst_pulsesink_prepare ():
/pipeline0/gconfaudiosink0/bin0/autoaudiosink0/autoaudiosink0-actual-sink-pulse]
Note, I have no microphone plugged in.

Similar bugs are #138318, #107797.
Also #131711 but there people have also problems with sound in general.

Up to now I have found that bug #138318 is very similar.

I am on Hardy. I have this message when trying the test record button in
command line:

[Bug 37736] Re: Microphone bug in Ubuntu HDA_Intel

2007-08-08 Thread Paul Dufresne
** Summary changed:

- Microphone bug in Ubuntu Dapper.
+ Microphone bug in Ubuntu HDA_Intel

** Description changed:

  Posted in forum here.. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=153840

  It seems that the microphone on my machine needs some messing about to
  get it to work after a restart. I can hear it through my speakers when I
  talk, but it won't register in the recording level monitor or any other
  programs.

  External microphone(s) on a Sony VAIO laptop VGN-FS215E,
  Dapper Drake 6.06 upgraded from Breezy,
  Some problems with KDE trying to take over Gnome, but apart from that all
seems well.

  Every time I restart into Gnome, I have to follow these steps before my
  microphone will work as it should..

  Open volume control,
  Find input souce in the options tab,
  Change the top one from Mic to Front Mic,
  Change it back again,

  Here's a small low quality vid to show it..
  http://www.filelodge.com/files/hdd6/122509/bug.avi
  http://www.filelodge.com/files/hdd6/122509/IMAG0001.ASF
  The bug.AVI file has been converted from the IMAG0001.ASF file.
  The AVI will play in totem the ASF will play in mplayer.

  Hope that helps to solve the problem.

+
  Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'gnome-
  desktop'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

[Bug 54386] Re: Whole gnome session crashes when click on a link in epiphany

2007-07-09 Thread Paul Dufresne
Assigning to nautilus, was on Ubuntu.
Because of:
---
(gnome-panel:5523): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion
`dest_width  0' failed
seahorse nautilus module initialized
Initializing nautilus-open-terminal extension
Window manager warning: Lost connection to the display ':0.0';
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the window manager.
---
Seems X was closed just after 'Initializing nautilus-open-terminal extension'.
Not sure it is related, but looks better than keeping it on Ubuntu.

[Bug 44428] Re: Multimedia keys repetition

2007-07-08 Thread Paul Dufresne
You could test on Gutsy LiveCD but it is not necessary (I would be very
surprised this have changed).
If you date too, you could beginning at: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/tribe2

I right-click on your Keyboard shortcuts menu, then select Add this launcher
on the Desktop.
Then I go on Desktop, right-click Keyboards Shortcuts, select Properties,
then select Launcher Tab, then discovered the command is:
gnome-keybinding-properties, I then:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/$ locate gnome-keybinding-properties
/usr/share/gnome-control-center/glade/gnome-keybinding-properties.glade
/usr/bin/gnome-keybinding-properties
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/$ dpkg -S /usr/bin/gnome-keybinding-properties
gnome-control-center: /usr/bin/gnome-keybinding-properties
then go to: http://packages.ubuntu.com/ in Search the content of
packages/keyword put: /usr/bin/gnome-keybinding-properties
click search,
on thre result page click the package: gnome/gnome-control-center
At the lower of the page: source package: control-center, click it
voilà! That's not easier than that.

[Bug 56939] Re: libsdl1.2-dev has trouble installing (dapper) because of libarts-dev dependancy

2007-07-07 Thread Paul Dufresne
Hi! I am a bug triager making a follow up on this bug and make sure it is
complete enough for a developer to investigate.
I am reopening on glib2.0 (source package for libglib2.0-dev), as it is this
one that 'seems' to have a dependency problem.
I don't understand why it was rejected by Paul Sladen.
I am making it Confirmed on glib2.0 since the info requested have been given,
although not from original poster.
Looking on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glib2.0/ I see that your
libglib2.0-dev version 2.10.3-0ubuntu1 have been released in pocket
updates (that's the only version to be there). I don't really kows what it
means, but this is surely significative.

2007-07-07 Thread Paul Dufresne
Sorry Sebastien! Seems it is the second time I walk on your toes in less than
24 hours.
I'd like better understand why it is not a glib2.0 bug.
Personally the problem seems more related to glib2.0-dev depends on an exact
version of of libglib, than it has to do with libsdl1.2.
Seems the bug reporter would have problem installing any package that depends
directly on indirectly on libglib2.0-dev, not just libsdl1.2.

Really just wishing better understand.

[Bug 120775] Re: Emblems get lost on file overwrite

2007-07-06 Thread Paul Dufresne
Well, Sebastien, you are much more qualified than me, but I am afraid I
disagree that this bug is a duplicate of bug #84262.
In the broad sense, yes, position and emblems information seems lost when the
file is overwritten.

This bug exist not only on desktop, but others nautilus windows.
Which is not the case of bug #84262.

I doubt that fixing position of the icon we'll fix it's emblems, although I
agree it could.
Prefer to keep these 2 bugs separated however, because I won't believe until I
see that fixing position of icon will fix emblem.
