[Bug 503577] Re: g-p-m brightness not applied anymore after rebooting
The real issue here is that when pressing the brightness keys, the brightness value in gconf is not updated I think you are oversimplifying this bug. Well you do have much more experience than me but for me, there seems to be 3 sub-bugs in this bug: 1) Normal drivers are unable to update the brightness of the LCD, that seems to explain why step two of the workaround does not work until step one is done. Also bug description suggest that there is no way to change brightness even with mouse in gnome-power-manager, until the acpi_backlight=vendor is passed to the kernel. 2) Brightness keys are not recognized with normal drivers (I suspect scancodes could be different with vendor drivers than normal ones, but this is just my hypothesis). Still, it need vendor drivers to work, as explain in initial description. But it is also possible that vendor drivers do direct brightness adjustments directly, that would explain why gconf never see the changes. 3) Gnome-power-manager settings (set by mouse) is not saved, but is temporarily value. According to documentation, that would be normal, but documentation seems to fail to explain how to set a saved 'normal' value for the brightness. I don't know. Searching 'brightness' for bugs result in lots of bugs, that seems to confirm that this is not only happenning on Dell mini 10. (Well, I did about one month ago, but I expect things have not changed much since). -- g-p-m brightness not applied anymore after rebooting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/503577 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 503577] Re: g-p-m brightness not applied anymore after rebooting
I am trying to summarise some info take from other bugs here. In bug #230421, we learn that the following changed in the acpi-support package in Ubuntu 9.10: * Drop events/video_brightness{down,up}, video_brightness{up,down}.sh: at least some platforms that use these ACPI sequences are seeing them correctly translated to input events, so those users will see duplicate events unless we drop them. LP: #178860. Mike, can you please run the 'acpi_listen' command, and report here any output produced when you press the brightness keys? This bug also suggest to look at the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting page. Bug #385723 seems the general missing backlight control for Linux kernel. Bug #320874, is very interesting, and was fixed in kernel 2.6.29: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12249 (reading fast, could be BIOS related). Bug #388216 (because KMS) What I call sub-bug 3, (brightness not saved) is in bug #35223, and they did fill a bug directly to gnome project: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335673 Bug #131650, brightness keys not working on Vaio SZ-140p. Sony Vaio have LOTS of bug reports... Bug #223954 (brightness controls still has major bugs) (mostly about going back to 100% when opening lid), asked to do: Thanks for your report but we need more information about your bug. Please, run gnome-power-bugreport.sh and gconftool -a /apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight. Bug #406515, for Lenovo, but showing how to determine keycodes, also link to Lnux kernel bugs. As I understand the results you got from 'apport-collect 501323' , a new window or tab should have opened in your browser executing this, or you could copy the link to the authorization page; but you did not seems to have given the permission to apport-collect to run on this web page. I suggest you retry 'apport-collect 501323' but take time to authorize apport in the web page, before continuing. Also, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager seems to suggest that you try: dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.Hal /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Suspend int32:0 at the $ prompt of Accessoires/Terminal... [Bug 500666] Re: Toshiba M505-S4972 The Fan does not work unless i suspend and bring it back up
I note from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1282161: I purchased new Toshiba Satellite M505-S4945 laptop and installed 64-bit Jaunty. Everything works great except that the fan cannot be turned on due to broken ACPI tables from Phoenix BIOS. The fan makes a big difference (40C vs 70+C). I found an omnibook module from sourceforge that is supposed to fix some issues with Satellite laptops, but I was unsuccessful compiling it, probably because the types of supported laptops do not include Satellite M505. I am not a developer nor a programmer, so I cannot fix the source code of omnibook module myself to add my specific model nor can I find it from terminal. They seems to get to the conclusion that: $ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points critical (S5): 108 C passive: 101 C: tc1=30 tc2=30 tsp=50 devices=CPU0 CPU1 active[0]: 94 C: devices=FAN0 active[1]: 82 C: devices=FAN1 active[2]: 72 C: devices=FAN2 active[3]: 52 C: devices=FAN3 active[4]: 42 C: devices=FAN4 is wrong. [Bug 259385] Re: [i845] Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG, i845, (and i945GM?) video cards
This bug was fixed by adding this line in /usr/bin/compiz: T=$T 8086:3577 8086:2562 # Intel 830MG, 845G (LP: #259385) This tells to not allow compiz to run on intel 845 and 830 chipsets. I am happy to see that things work for you now. Like I said in a previous comment, when I remove [Desktop Entry] in a .desktop file on Hardy, it does not segfaults, so the problem should be gone in Hardy. About your Nvidia card, it is unlikely to be because of your monitor, as monitor don't need driver (as far as I know), X knows how to 'speak' with monitor, and query size, resolutions supported, etc. (It read a 128 bytes structure called EDID transmitted from the monitor). That said, I have seen bugs where Samsung monitors's EDID were giving bad size, giving huge fonts. You could try to ask help on: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+questions?field.search_text=FX+5500field.sort=RELEVANCYfield.sort-empty-marker=1field.actions.search=Searchfield.language=frfield.language=enfield.language-empty-marker=1field.status=OPENfield.status=NEEDSINFOfield.status=ANSWEREDfield.status=SOLVEDfield.status-empty-marker=1 and use blue 'ask a question' in upper right. [Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault
Hi Bill! Do you have g_key_file_get_string_list: assertion `group_name != NULL' failed too? If not, I would probably consider it a different bug, that should be reported in a new bug report. In that case, you may want to explore in GUI /var/crash, and 'double-'click the crash file to be guided in reporting bug. Well, while trying to learn what is update-desktop-database, I extracted code I believe to be the culprit (seems the same in Gutsy and Hardy): static void process_desktop_file (const char *desktop_file, const char *name, GError **error) { GError *load_error; GKeyFile *keyfile; char **mime_types; int i; keyfile = g_key_file_new (); load_error = NULL; g_key_file_load_from_file (keyfile, desktop_file, G_KEY_FILE_NONE, load_error); if (load_error != NULL) { g_propagate_error (error, load_error); return; } mime_types = g_key_file_get_string_list (keyfile, g_key_file_get_start_group (keyfile), MimeType, NULL, load_error); g_key_file_free (keyfile); As I have no clue at all what that code does, I'll need a bit of time to undestand it. ;-) That said, when I do: sudo apt-get remove yelp on my Hardy system, I get no error at all. -- update-desktop-database segfault https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59392 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for desktop-file-utils in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault
Hum, it is very likely that one of your .desktop files have lost it's first line: [Desktop Entry] causing g_key_file_get_start_group (keyfile) to return NULL. The previously posted code suppose there is always a first group (that is a [section] in the .desktop file) which is plain wrong. The could should be something similar to: if (start_group=g_key_file_get_start_group (keyfile) != NULL) mime_types = g_key_file_get_string_list (keyfile, start_group, MimeType, NULL, load_error); else /* Warning! your file ... have no [Desktop Entry] at the begginning */ or something similar (I never programmed GLib code, so I'll let developer write some good code). So Bill, it is not necessary to post info, but it would not be bad if you do. I'll mark this as affecting Hardy too, and confirm the bug now. ** Changed in: desktop-file-utils (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- update-desktop-database segfault https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59392 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for desktop-file-utils in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault
I was hoping that the update-desktop-database.out file would be created even if I was expecting it to segfault. Maybe you can just sudo update-desktop-database -v That should give something like: Search path is now: [/usr/local/share/applications, /usr/share/applications] File '/usr/share/applications/gnome-settings-mouse.desktop' lacks MimeType key File '/usr/share/applications/freecell.desktop' lacks MimeType key File '/usr/share/applications/gnotravex.desktop' lacks MimeType key File '/usr/share/applications/sound-juicer.desktop' lacks MimeType key File '/usr/share/applications/gnome-power-preferences.desktop' lacks MimeType key up to some file, then segfault. [Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault
Bill, it is possible that what I suggested you to do don't work. At least Debian poster seems to say it does not work that way for him to find corrupted .desktop files. I am speaking to developers here. I WAS WRONG. I have deliberately broken my /usr/share/applications/screensavers/flipscreen3d.desktop file by removing the [desktop] line. Then: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo update-desktop-database Could not parse file '/usr/share/applications/screensavers/flipscreen3d.desktop': Key file does not start with a group File '/usr/share/applications/totem.desktop' contains invalid MIME type '-e' that is missing a slash [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ So Hardy SEEMS (I am slowly becoming more prudent) to not be affected. I tried to compare Gutsy and Hardy and they seems the same to me. After: mime_types = g_key_file_get_string_list (keyfile, g_key_file_get_start_group (keyfile), MimeType, NULL, load_error); Code does: g_key_file_free (keyfile); if (load_error != NULL) { g_propagate_error (error, load_error); return; } I have a new ... *hypothesis* I now believe that this code is right. But that there was an assert in the Glib for the g_key_file_get_start_group in Gutsy that have been removed in Hardy. So that now g_propagate_error do work (and was not going up to there in Gutsy because of the hypothetical assert). -- update-desktop-database segfault https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59392 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for desktop-file-utils in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Hi! I am a bug triager making a follow up on this bug and make sure it is complete enough for a developer to investigate. I am making it Confirmed on glib2.0 since the info requested have been given, although not from original poster. Well, Sebastien, you are much more qualified than me, but I am afraid I disagree that this bug is a duplicate of bug #84262. [Bug 47145] Re: It's not possible to login through GUI when disk is full
I have removed duplicate on the general case of bug 22842, because I believe this programs (GDM, KDM) need special measure not touched by https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HandleNicelyLowDiskSpace?action=show specification that I just began to wrote. In fact I intend to separate kdm issue in it's own bug, as they are in fact two different problems, with both gdm and kdm needing to be patched. -- It's not possible to login through GUI when disk is full https://launchpad.net/bugs/47145 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Making it as affecting gdm (will fill a separate bug for kdm) rather than Ubuntu. ** Changed in: Ubuntu Sourcepackagename: None = gdm -- It's not possible to login through GUI when disk is full https://launchpad.net/bugs/47145 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Please, what dpkg -l gnome-system-monitor gives you.
