[Bug 1980836] Re: Regression in Ubuntu 22.04: Content of form field stored invisibly

2022-11-21 Thread Philipp Wendler
I would like to repeat that this is a regression in Ubuntu 22.04, it has
a fix released upstream and the patch applies cleanly if backported. So
it seems that this should be a low hanging fruit to fix and I would
really appreciate it if the fix could be shipped to Ubuntu 22.04. Thank
you very much in advance!

2022-11-12 Thread Philipp Burch
Has new version with the released fix applied already been published?

My nautilus version is current on Ubuntu 22.10, it is on
1:43.0-1ubuntu1. This bug still affects me and it can be reproduced
easily in at least two ways:

- Have a Nautilus window open, then right-click the launcher and click a
bookmarked folder there -> nautilus crashes immediately (see also
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1934579)

- In a Nautilus window, type some letters to start a search, then open
one of the result folders and then go back either using the button in
the title bar or using the "back" button of the mouse -> the previous
location is displayed briefly and then nautilus crashes.

None of the workarounds found on the web helps (removing
`~/.cache/tracker3` or using an Xorg session instead of Wayland).

2022-08-01 Thread Philipp Wendler
A fix has been committed upstream now. Could this be backported to
Ubuntu?

I tested
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler/poppler/-/commit/a89c3c27e02e9c300aa667c966d91fdf787c7d0a
by cherry-picking it on top of poppler-22.02.0. Tt applies and compiles
cleanly and with it Evince on Ubuntu 22.04 behaves as it should with
respect to form fields for several PDFs that I checked, including the
original problematic file.

[Bug 1980836] [NEW] Regression in Ubuntu 22.04: Content of form field stored invisibly

2022-07-06 Thread Philipp Wendler
Public bug reported:

Evince on Ubuntu 22.04 is not able to handle some PDF forms correctly
anymore that it was able to handle on Ubuntu 21.10 and on Ubuntu 20.04.

The symptom is that one can edit the form content and also save it, but
that the entered text is only visible when the form field is focused and
in edit mode. Otherwise the text it is invisible, also on printouts.

Such bugs have been reported against Evince for a long time (e.g.,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/265033) but I am
reporting this as a new bug because for the current form with which I am
experiencing this it is a regression.

I have attached the problematic form with two form fields filled out, one in
the upper left corner and the big one in the lower half.
I have produced this by taking the original, empty form (produced by somebody
else) and first opened it in Evince 41.4, which I have installed from the snap
package (revision 1017) on Ubuntu 22.04. I entered text in the upper left field
and saved the form.
Then I opened the PDF in Evince 42.3 from the apt package of Ubuntu 22.04 and
entered text in the big field and saved the form.

Evince 3.36 on Ubuntu 20.04 has the same (correct) behavior as Evince
41.4.

When I open the PDF again, only the text in the first field is visible.
The text in the second field is visible only if I click into the field.
The visibility of the field contents is the same for Evince 41.4 (snap),
Evince 42.3 (apt), and Okular 20.12.3 (snap). So it seems that the
problem is with Evince 42.3 incorrectly saving the field content, not
with displaying it.

Firefox shows and prints the content of both fields, though.

Note that I cannot switch back to Evince 41 because for some other forms
that I have the exact same problem happens only with the old version and
the new version fixes it. So it seems that something changed that fixed
it for some forms and broke it for others.

[Bug 1972051] Re: After upgrade to 22.04, screenshot shortcuts are re-enabled and cannot be disabled

2022-05-07 Thread Philipp
** Description changed:

I’ve upgraded from Ubuntu 21.10 to 22.04 using do-release-upgrade. After
the upgrade, I found that the screenshot shortcuts in Settings >
Keyboard > View and Customize Shortcuts > Screenshots were all enabled
even though I had previously disabled them. I don’t expect an OS upgrade
to undo settings I explicitly made.

It also doesn’t seem possible to disable these shortcuts. I’ve disabled
all of them, yet pressing “Print” (for example) still invokes the new
screenshot utility that was introduced in 22.04.

This is especially problematic because I have set-up custom screenshot
shortcuts to use Flameshot. These shortcuts don’t work anymore even
though they’re still shown in the Custom Shortcuts section.

Specifically, Print, Alt+Print, and Ctrl+Print are all hijacked by the
new screenshot utility with no way to prevent that.

+ Now, what actually happens is that no matter what’s set-up for these
+ shortcuts, pressing Print (for example) always shows the new screenshot
+ utility. After that, one can press Share which then seems to pass the
+ screenshotted area onto Flameshot? This is a superbly weird interaction
+ and I don’t want it.
+
(Note that it was not possible for me to identify the package
responsible for this because "ubuntu-bug -w" doesn’t seem to work on my
system because of something related to Wayland.)

Secondary Screen (Built-In): 3840x2160: 200%

I'm having the issue with or without extensions.

[Bug 1567565] Re: Permission error saving a file

2021-11-06 Thread Philipp Wendler
This problem persists with recent versions of Ubuntu and Evince when
editing files on CIFS/SMB shares, even after disabling AppArmor.

The reason for this is that Evince attempts to move the temporary file over the
original PDF while it still has the latter file open, and overwriting open
files is not supported by SMB:

[Bug 1930090] [NEW] Sometimes doubleclick to open folders is not working

2021-05-28 Thread Philipp Lietz
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 (64 bit, Desktop) and sometimes the doubleclick to open
folders is not working correctly.
Its not the mouse, cause I use the same mouse on a windows pc and it works
without any problems.
Its also not the doubleclick speed, I'm very sure about that, even if i can't
prove. But I'm using a PC for over 20 years and never got that problem in the
past 10 years, only with Ubuntu.
So I think there's something wrong, cause its very annyoing if you have to work
and go through many different folders and then every 5. - 10. folder that
problem occurs.
I posted this question in a ubuntu users forum and others said that they have
that problem, too.

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2020-07-05 Thread Philipp
Daniel,

the shell itself is still usable in my scenario. You can open the
calendar, options menu on the top right and even new windows from the
panel. But the windows itself and desktop (including right click menu)
are frozen.

I just tested it with the latest gnome 3.36.3 updates and it still
happens, still easily reproducible with many right clicks on the
desktop.

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2020-05-08 Thread Philipp
I can easily reproduce this bug on Ubuntu 20.04 with right and left clicking on
the desktop to open the context menu alot. On many different machines and
virtual machines.
This does NOT happen for me when gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons is

On some machines I have to explicitly do the desktop context menu thing to
force it (otherwise it will not happen) on some machines it randomly happens
even if I do not click on the desktop. The latter is pretty annoying.

** Attachment added: "An easy way to reproduce this, works every time on many
machines. Sometimes takes a bit longer but it will happen."

[Bug 1877451] [NEW] window input no longer possible when right clicking on desktop

2020-05-07 Thread Philipp
Public bug reported:

Sometimes when right clicking on desktop all windows no longer respond
to input.

This is easily reproducable, just do many alternating right and left
clicks directly on the desktop. The context menu will open and close and
at some point the context menu will stay open and will no longer
respond. Also all other windows will no longer react on input.

The top bar can be used though, it is possible to log out and log in
again. This will reset the problem. Sometimes Alt + F2 -> R is also
possible, which resets the problem.

[Bug 1835224] Re: gnome-terminal drops pam_group config

2019-07-05 Thread Philipp Takacs
I think you misunderstand me a bit.

> The issue is probably in systemd, starting up gnome-terminal (and
> presumably any other app that it starts up) with the wrong groups.

Yes gnome-terminal uses a systemd --user service to start a
terminal-server. This terminal-server is the parrent of all shells in
a gnome-terminal for this user.

The problem is systemd --user services are designed as per-user service
not per-session[0]. As I understand the Mailinglist, there ar no plans
to change this. So a systemd --user service isn't the right tool for
this architecture of a terminal and for any other programm which should
belong to a session. Thats why I say it's a bug in gnome-terminal not
in systemd.

That systemd has no per-session services is an other problem.

[Bug 1835224] Re: gnome-terminal drops pam_group config

2019-07-04 Thread Philipp Takacs
I can start an other terminal (i.e. xterm) there are the groups correct.
Starting a gnome-terminal from this terminal causes wrong groups in
gnome-terminal. So either gnome-terminal sets the groups or uses a
dbus/systemd/whatever funktion to set the groups. I would call both
scenarios a bug in the gnome-terminal.

I was experiencing the same issue on KDE Neon. Interestingly, this used
to work for ages, and now suddenly popped up all of a sudden. Running
`sudo kbd_mode -s` worked for me too.

Please could an attempt be made to prevent this from happening in the
future? It's quite annoying.

Many thanks to everybody for their effort.

[Bug 1786999] [NEW] bluetooth coupling is only possible in certain combinations

2018-08-14 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Initializing a bluetooth coupling on an Android device causes a
notification to be displayed in gnome-shell which doesn't display the
"confirm" or ~"ignore" buttons. When clicking on the notification (which
seems the only intuitive way to make the buttons visible) the
notification disappears and apparently selects to ignore the requests
implicitly. The user has to guess that.

Initializing the coupling from the Ubuntu side works find because the
confirmation has to be performed on the device.

[Bug 1786702] [NEW] List view content doubles whenever selected

2018-08-12 Thread Philipp Burch
Public bug reported:

In gnome-characters, when selecting a category for the first time, the
contents are fine. When selecting another category and then going back
to the first one, the contents of the list view are doubled, all symbols
are appended again to the list. This can most easily be seen in a
category with only few symbols, like "Flags" (see attached screenshot).
A restart of the app resets the list view contents to only a single set.

1)

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS

2)

$ apt-cache policy gnome-characters

I didn't know this alternative, thanks for the info. However, the
extremely low quality of apport strikes here as well (selecting upload
causes the program to return immediately with return code 0 and no
output which is in conjunction with a missing verbosity switch just
inacceptable).

This is still and issue in Ubuntu 17.10. Firefox opens all kinds of file

[Bug 1739699] [NEW] opening a large number of videos with vlc causes delay and unresponsive vlc

2017-12-21 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. download a free MPlayer test file, like
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/MPEG-4/video.mp4 and move it into /tmp/a or similar
2. replicate it by running (requires a few GB of free space depending on the
deduplication facilities of your filesystem)

```
import shutil
for i in range(0,1000):
shutil.copy("/tmp/a/video.mp4", "/tmp/a/video-%d.mp4" % (i,))
```
3. open /tmp/a in nautilus, select all files and open them with VLC media
player through the context menu

Instead of putting all files in the VLC queue like Ubuntu 17.04's
nautilus did, an ~"opening in progress" dialog is opened blocking the UI
for almost a minute while consuming 100% of all CPU cores. If the above
is done during high memory consumption of another process hundreds of
VLC processes are started and the display manager crashes (but that's
another issues). If random playback is configured in VLC, it's ignored
and always the last video is played first.

The is no apparent reason why multiple files cannot be opened like in
17.04.

[Bug 1718444] [NEW] systemd-sysctl in Xenial is not obeying the order of the sysctls

2017-09-20 Thread Philipp Kern
Public bug reported:

systemd-sysctl in Xenial forces itself over procps by shipping a link
for procps.service to systemd-sysctl.service. However, it does not obey
the order both of the files and also of the sysctls within the files.
Instead it uses a simple hashmap. As it turns out that's fixed upstream
and systemd master uses an ordered hashmap because of this, which at
least preserves order within single files. Traditionally files in
sysctl.d have been prefixed with numbers to ensure an order and that's
now completely non-deterministic on Xenial.

Relevant upstream commit:
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/commit/886cf982d3018f7451f0548dadbc05bd2d583bb6

Note that conf_files_list_nulstr in master sorts the configuration files
using strcmp, so even order of configuration files should be obeyed.

I only see one menu with 4 squares (I meanwhile switched to Xfce desktop
and nautilus might have different icons, but the attached screenshot
should clarify this statement) which I use to set the sorting.

[Bug 1292113] Re: CTRL+ALT+T - shortcut to open Terminal is does not work

2017-08-10 Thread Philipp Wrann
This also affects me (running ubuntu 16.04.2)

Remapping the shortcut for the command to some other combination does
not work either.

I had this bug for a long time, then deactivated the shortcut and
created my own shortcut to open a new terminal. That worked for a while
but did stop to work a few days ago.

Last kernel upgrade was 4.10.0-30-generic

[Bug 1701175] [NEW] sorting type and inverse sorting flag not persisted in home directory across restarts

This causes problems in other applications, too. I get constant requests

well.

All requests disappear if I start gnome-keyring-daemon manually from the

[Bug 1681956] [NEW] gnome-user-share no longer provides gnome-user-share script

2017-04-11 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Since users still have to get Bluetooth running manually following
http://askubuntu.com/questions/131570/how-do-you-make-ubuntu-accept-
files-sent-over-bluetooth because
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-user-share/+bug/1406108
is still not fixed[1] there's need for the `gnome-user-share` script
(usually `/usr/lib/gnome-user-share/gnome-user-share`). It's no longer
provided by `gnome-user-share` and `apt-file find gnome-user-share`
doesn't reveal any location where it could be now.

As alternative, a thought-through intuitive bluetooth setup that not
just somehow, but reliably works in all possible senses would be
appreciated.

[Bug 1467187] Re: allow usage of multicore implementations of compression tools

Right, I was confusing this with `nautilus`' archive creation/compress feature.
I guess that parallelization depends on the compression algorithm used, but
`file-roller` doesn't even use parallelization for gzip for which there's a
parallel algorithm out for years, maybe decades.

[Bug 1605397] Re: gnome-terminal doesn't return to its original size when unsnapping from the side of the screen

2017-02-17 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
I have the same issue with `gnome-terminal`, but also other
applications, like `gnome-system-monitor`, on Ubuntu 16.10, so this
might be a more widespread issue.

This seems to be fixed in Ubuntu 16.10 based on simple observation (as
opposed to a systematic test).

[Bug 1627334] [NEW] Play Count is not synced back from iPod to Rhythmbox Library

2016-09-24 Thread Philipp Hauer
Public bug reported:

Hi everyone,

the play count in my library is not updated to the value in the iPod
during synchronization.

Steps to reproduce:
- Consider song XY with a play count 5 in the Rhythmbox library
- Connect the iPod and synchronize. Unplug iPod.
- Play song XY one time on the iPod.
- Plug iPod and synchronize
- The play count of the song in the Rhythmbox library is still 5. However, when
I browse through the content of the iPod I see a play count of 6!

This value is not synchronized back to the Rhythmbox library.

I'm using Rhythmbox 3.4, Ubuntu 16.04 and an iPod classic 160 GB.

Cheers, Philipp

[Bug 1542519] Re: Double menu bar

2016-05-21 Thread Philipp
This bug does not depend on nvidia cards.
I can reproduce it with VLC (go fullscren and then back to window mode) on a
Intel i5-3317U and a AMD R9 280 (both use open source driver).
It sometimes appears for terminal as well, but only in a virtual machine
(Windows 7 Host + VirtualBox 5.0.20).

[Bug 1545272] [NEW] reboot fails with "Failed to start reboot.target: Transaction is destructive."

2016-02-13 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

`sudo reboot` fails with

Failed to start reboot.target: Transaction is destructive.

Broadcast message from richter@richter-lenovo-IdeaPad-U410 on pts/1
(Sa 2016-02-13 13:36:30 CET):

The system is going down for reboot NOW!

which seems to be caused by an incomplete suspend as stated in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1441253 which
isn't a duplicate because the reason seem to be a btrfs issue there
which I don't suffer from.

I'd suggest to let the suspend time out, provide the user with the
information that a suspend is pending and might timeout or succeed (or
something similar, more useful than "Failed to start reboot.target:
Transaction is destructive.") so that reboot is possible again after
some time.

The issue should be fixed in the kernel as well, it makes sense as well
to handle this situation in `systemd` because assuming that the kernel
is always stable is naive and adding such a timeout improves stability
and better feedback usage.

[Bug 1527817] [NEW] unhelpful error message "Parsing filters is unsupported."

[Bug 1524762] [NEW] Saving a document fails with error "Error opening file '[path to file]': Permission denied"

of sense. The directory is a regular directory created in `nautilus` and

[Bug 1520995] [NEW] MIME type of externally created file isn't updated after content has been added

2015-11-29 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

When an application creates a file (e.g. `firefox` a download file)
`nautilus ` recognizes an empty text file immediately and the user has
to reload the view in order to trigger recognition of the MIME type
after some data has been written to the file. This reload should be
performed automatically.

[Bug 1519387] Re: nautilus crashes when deleting a file on a cifs mount

At most related because the symptoms are different (the window disappears in my
case while `nautilus` freezes in the other) and in my case the crash is
triggered when deleting any file from a `cifs` mount, not just one named
`.trash_1000`.
