[Bug 896595] Re: Ubuntu does not remember LID brightness

2012-10-03 Thread Quim Gil
Hi, not sure whether this is the same bug but reporting anyway, just in
case it's useful:

Running Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 2 64 on a Lenovo T430. Brightness control
works well both with Fn F8/F9 and with the settings window. Logging out
and in preserves the previous brightness value. But shutting down or
restarting brings back the 100% brightness.

Not the end of the world but annoying, yes.

[Bug 60691] keyword search into location entry doesn't work

2006-09-16 Thread Quim Gil
Public bug reported:

In Epiphany 2.14 I'm using the integrated Google search in the URL entry
field all the time. However, testing the 2.16 in Ubuntu Edgy I see this
feature is not available anymore and I get the message The URL is not
valid and cannot be loaded

Upstream says this is working for them, seems to be a specific bug of
the Edgy package. See http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350053

[Bug 60557] Logout key not working in a Dell Inspiron 630m

2006-09-15 Thread Quim Gil
Public bug reported:

Pressing that big button to turn on/off the laptop does nothing in Edgy,
while it works perfectly in Dapper.

I'm talking about that special key with the same log out icon of the
panel capplet many laptops have separated from the keyboard. In Dapper
it opens the logout dialog, in Edgy does nothing.

[Bug 26017] Re: Ubuntu's graphical network configuration doesn't work at all

2006-04-09 Thread Quim Gil
Apart from the problem of taking so long to apply changes, the problem is that
network-admin won't store the new configuration at all. Maybe it has something
to do with eth1 and having different locations. At least I'm getting the
problem now that I've moved to another office and I'm trying to keep two
different locations updated.

This is what the terminal shows:

Emulating the gksu command:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gksu network-admin
(network-admin:6072): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

(((here is when changes are made, and they takle effect: change of ESSID and
password)))

** (network-admin:6072): CRITICAL **: gst_xml_element_set_content: assertion
`node != NULL' failed

(((This is the error message got when pressing OK. The app will be like
frozen for a mkinute and then vanishes. The changes are not saved and you get
back to the initial situation, withy old ESSID and password, so the connection
is not reachable again)))

Now going through sudo, same thing:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo network-admin

** (network-admin:6611): CRITICAL **: gst_xml_element_set_content: assertion
`node != NULL' failed
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

The solution is to change tghe configuration everytime you log in and leave
it like that, open, without pressing ok. Which is not optimal. :)

[Bug 35962] Placing the logout applet in the bottom right corner instead

2006-03-22 Thread Quim Gil
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/35962

Comment:
Thanks Sebastien for the quick answer. /me understands.

Just FYI... In fact, at the very end I'm logging out pushing the own
login/out button the laptop has next to the keyboard, whick works
perfectly making the same dialog popup... So maybe a user like me should
simply remove that logout applet from the panel (it doesn't appear in
the default GNOME desktop, ins't it) and problem solved.

As always, the problem with usability testing is to deduce how
normal/frequent is your own case. :)

Which list do you recommend to discuss this? I don't have a strong
opinion but I think it's worth to know more people's opinion.

Thanks again Sebastien for your good work.

[Bug 35962] Placing the logout applet in the bottom right corner instead

2006-03-21 Thread Quim Gil
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/35962

Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Doing some casual usability testing on Dapper Flight 5...

After some days trying the default panel setting with the logout applet
on the top right corner, I found that from time to time I clicked it by
accident when trying to close an application window.

The x form the expanded aplication windows and the logout icon sit
almost one next to each other, and the average user can hit the wrong
icon accidentally.

Instead, placing this applet on the bottom right corner, next to the
trash can, is giving me a better user experience. The metaphor also
works better IMO:

- The top panel shows mostly things to start: links to applications,
launchers, possible actions through the notification area... Instead,
the bottom panel shows mostly places to go: the window list, the
desktop icon, the workspace switcher... In this context it makes sense
to put there the logout applet since it's where the user says I want to
go outside.

- Bottom right is also a natural exit point at least for left-to-right
readers (bottom left would be for right-to-left, still in the bottom).

- The neighbourhood with the trash can isn't bad either, since both
somehow share the idea of good bye.

In practical terms, the user almost never needs to go with the pointer
near to that corner, which makes it a safer place for such singular
icon.
