1080p decoding is very CPU intensive task. It is simply IMPOSSIBLE that it would only use 10% of your CPU. Indeed, I can reproduce the problem: my 2,8 GHz CPU is totally saturated and VLC is forced to discard most frames. This is clearly visible with: 'vlc -vv' I guess WMP and Qt use video decoding hardware acceleration from the graphical adapter, and I doubt there is any solution to decoding HD AVC without hardware acceleration. [Bug 593477] Re: Use VP8/WebM as the default video codec/format
You are assuming that they are no other patents than Google's on VP8. This is an unproven assertion, and some experts have clearly voiced their serious doubts. The VideoLAN project has an informal policy of not taking software patents into accounts when taking decision for the simple reason that: 1/ they are invalid in Europe, where the project is based, and 2/ there is no way to determine that a certain piece of code does not infringe any patent (you cannot come and ask the patent office for that kind of assertion). The VideoLAN project is a non-profit and it will not let its policy be dictated by the FSF or Ubuntu zealots. If you have a problem with that, you better take it up with the VideoLAN project directly than through Launchpad. ** Changed in: vlc Status: Confirmed = Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/593477 Title: Use VP8/WebM as the default video codec/format -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 593477] Re: Use VP8/WebM as the default video codec/format
In reply to comment #25 This is for VLC's convert wizard. The default preset should be WebM instead of a proprietary format From Wikipedia: In telecommunications, a proprietary protocol is a communications protocol owned by a single organization or individual. WebM is fully controlled by Google, and hence proprietary. The VLC default video codec is H.264, an international standard (ISO/IEC 14496-10 - MPEG-4 Part 10, Advanced Video Coding). That does not fit my definition of proprietary. You can get the specification for free there http://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-H.264 . There are also top-notch open-source implementations, FFmpeg/lavc for decoding, x264 for encoding. I guess you meant patent-encumbered rather than proprietary. The VideoLAN projec operates under EU legislation which does not recognize software patent. If you live somewhere else, please don't make it the VLC media player developer's problem. [Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)
How to make the tray icon transparent depends on the theme. If the tray icon area uses a uniform background color, then the tray icon background can simply be filled with the same color. That is what happens with old desktop themes, and works in pretty much any application. However, if the tray icon area background is _not_ uniform, then composition is required, so that the icons are really transparent. To that end, applications must create an X window for they tray icon, that uses the ARGB X11 visual. Unfortunately, some applications hence fail to do that. Instead, they use the old method and fill the background of their tray icon with an uniform background color. I know at least VLC and Skype fall in this category. In both cases, ARGB visuals are disabled due to complications with video rendering, namely the XVideo extension cannot be used with ARGB visuals. In principle, this is not an issue: XVideo is used for the main application video rendering window, not for the tray icon window. X11 allows an application to use different visuals for different windows. However, to my knowledge, the Qt4 GUI library does not expose this feature of X11, and hence ARGB has to be disabled not just for the video widget, but for all widgets including the tray icon. -- Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/403135 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Except for the tone, I would have to agree with the complaint that all those bugs shouldn't have been massively merged in the first place. We do not merge all segmentation faults, or all out-of-memory hogs, do we? Just because the symptoms are the same does not mean that each and every affected application suffers from the same actual bug cause. And in fact, they don't, at least not all of them. I very much doubt it will be fixed even in 10.10 as far as VLC is concerned. As already explained, we need to disable transparency to work around a problem between Qt4 and XVideo. [Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)
Because of bug #416294, VLC had to disable ARGB X11 visuals in Xlib. In my opinion, a ugly but nevertheless cosmetic issue in the tray icon is much less severe than the inability to play any video. Hence we will not re-enable ARGB visuals. As a consequence, we cannot fix this bug. We would need a proper Qt4-x11 fix for #416294 (see http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-5464) first, which is not forthcoming. ** Changed in: vlc Status: New = Won't Fix -- Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/403135 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 428884] Re: gnome-screensaver-command --poke no longer inhibits screensaver
If it's just a matter of fixing a DBus in VLC, then Ubuntu VLC could just invoke dbus-send via system(). Obviously, that wouldn't work for other packages. And by the way, xdg-screensaver will need to be fixed too, because VLC 1.1 will probably use that. But again, I would not to blame GNOME too much here. Tracking which applications is inhibiting the screen saver makes sense. And if Ubuntu GNOME keeps the old API for backward compatibility, there will never be any incentive for dependent application to fix their code... So of course, the most up-to-date distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora are bound to be hit. If you want to suffer from bleeding edge stuff, you should use Ubuntu LTS or Debian stable really. But of course you will have old stuff with fewer features; it's a trade-off. -- gnome-screensaver-command --poke no longer inhibits screensaver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/428884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 428884] Re: gnome-screensaver-command --poke no longer inhibits screensaver
Fermulator, I think on a high level, everybody would agree. But I think the problem is that nobody is responsible for fixing this issue. GNOME guys decided to clean up their API. We can't blame them for doing so. Of course, users of their APIs (i.e. VLC media player here) were not notified. But then again, the GNOME guys have no way to know who is using this API anyway. On the VLC side, we did not know about the problem until it was too late. And I suspect the architectural changes that a proper fix won't be feasible before the next VLC release series. I mean VLC 1.1, and that probably will go to Ubuntu 10.10 (Ubuntu 10.04 if we are really fast and lucky). On the Ubuntu side, VLC is only in universe (or was it even multiverse). That does mean there is no support promise. And of course, the Ubuntu GNOME guys have no incentives to take a patch that makes them drift from their upstream, only to support non-GNOME non-Ubuntu-main components. Ultimately, you get what you pay for, and you probably paid nothing. Complaining about the problem does not advance the resolution. What we need is someone taking action. Then (s)he can: - craft a proper patch for VLC 1.1, - then try to figure out how to backport the fix to VLC 1.0, - then fix it in VLC 1.0. -- gnome-screensaver-command --poke no longer inhibits screensaver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/428884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 428884] Re: gnome-screensaver-command --poke no longer inhibits screensaver
You are welcome to provide a patch for the VLC 1.0-bugfix branch if you are not happy. In VLC 1.1, the problem is off-shored to xdg-screensaver. So it's up to GNOME screensaver and XDG-utils to interoperate.
