I'm having a keyboard latency on Ubuntu 24.10 daily build, back in the
day 24.10 used to have no keyboard latency while some games on Steam
proton ran smooth.

So whether the game run smooth or not, any of my keyboards even with
controller using keyboard input are having latency for no reason at all
but it's just a weird bug that is bothering me.

If I'm using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, I get no keyboard latency on any games
thankfully but when I installed Ubuntu 24.10 or upgrade to 24.10 while
on daily build, now some games through Steam proton will have keyboard
latency again whether it runs smooth or not, keyboard are still having
latency which it's bothering me.

It just happen every time I'd installed or upgrade to Ubuntu 24.10.

[Bug 2062128] Re: Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland

2024-04-18 Thread Jamie R. McPeek
>>> Is the machine a desktop with a single GPU or laptop with hybrid
GPUs?

This machine is a hybrid/optimus setup with an Intel iGPU and NVIDIA
dGPU:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-HX GT1 [UHD
Graphics 770] (rev 0c)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GA107GLM [RTX A2000 8GB
Laptop GPU] (rev a1)

The system UEFI is configured to enable hybrid and the proprietary
NVIDIA driver is configured as "on demand".

In the setup at my desk, I am connected to a thunderbolt dock, which is
connected to external monitors via DisplayPort. The laptop operates
"closed lid" from power up.

[Bug 2062128] [NEW] Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland

2024-04-17 Thread Jamie R. McPeek
Public bug reported:

I am testing Ubuntu 24.04 beta and using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers
(550.67).

Prior to installing the drivers packages (using nouveau), the system
would load gdm3 in Wayland.

After installer the drivers package, the system would load gdm3 in X11.

This appears to be caused by the configuration file at
/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules

However, according to the comments in the rules file, it should prefer
Wayland:

# Disable wayland when nvidia modeset is disabled or when drivers are a lower
# version than 470,
# For versions above 470 but lower than 510 prefer Xorg,
# Above 510, prefer Wayland.

I am able to work around this by making a system override on the file,
in /etc/udev/rules.d:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Apr 18 00:34 61-gdm.rules -> /dev/null

With this in place, when booting, gdm3 will be loaded with Wayland.

** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 991471] Re: multi-device btrfs filesystem automatically mounted once for each device

2024-03-25 Thread Alfonso R. Reyes
The problem is not confined to Ubuntu.
I am seeing the same problem in Fedora SilverBlue 38 and Fedora SilverBlue 39.

The problem is restricted to `btrfs` only; other partitions such as
ext3, ext4, NTFS look fine.

I have to choose between being able to alt-tab while dragging or using

Cleaned the result up manually a bit to only be the memory parts. This
show that the leak is still there.

It did not seem to do anything to relieve the issue. Attached is about
an hour and 10 minutes in that state after a reboot.

2023-02-10 Thread Lowell R Holden
Disabling that extension seems to have fixed the leak. From the start I
had appindicator also disabled, would you like me to enable it to see if
this set up causes appindicator to spam the log every few seconds as
well? I'll attach the log from gnome-shell to show the difference.

The extensions directory does not exist, so I have no unsupported
extensions. Here is the requested log file.

2023-02-09 Thread Lowell R Holden
I believe the memory leak still exists. It is now 1.3 GB in size. I was
reporting the size given by system monitor in the processes tab, which
appears to be physical memory. I don't know the best way of getting all
the data, so here is the relevant data about memory size from what I got
using ps aux | grep "gnome-shell"

USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSSTTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
ryan-li+2531 4.3 8.8 5815292 1445944 ?Ssl 01:02 32:02

2023-02-08 Thread Lowell R Holden
I let it run for a bit, but it appears it isn't just the desktop icons.
I will sleep with my set up in the state where the leak happens to fully
confirm since it only has gone from 120 to 240 MB. Let me know how I can
collect and post data after letting it leak for a while and I will do so
when I wake up.

[Bug 2006675] [NEW] Memory leak when hdmi switcher is not sending data/not outputting

2023-02-08 Thread Lowell R Holden
Public bug reported:

Main problem:
Gnome-shell has a memory leak when my hdmi switcher is on a channel that is
currently not inputting hdmi (i.e. desktop on hdmi 2 but hdmi 3 is selected
with nothing inserted). This memory leak does not happen if signal is being
sent through the hdmi switcher either from the desktop itself or from some
other device. It also does not happen if I properly turn the monitor off.

[Bug 1998529] [NEW] Uninstalling extensions dereferences symlinks, risking data loss

2022-12-01 Thread Drew R.
Public bug reported:

Uninstalling a gnome-shell extension removes its folder in
".local/share/gnome-shell/extensions", recursively as it should, but
dereferencing symlinks!! Here is what happens and how to reproduce:

Someone (me) installs an extension to try it out. While tweaking with
its configuration, to try to customize it, I put a symlink within its
extensions directory, pointing to somewhere else in my home folder. For
example, in my case, a symlink to "~/Pictures/Icons", to be able to set
it up with one of many custom icons I've created. Uninstall the
extension later as it's not to my liking, extensions folder is gone, as
well as my ~/Pictures/Icons folder's contents in my home directory.
This could have been a lot worse, if the symlink was pointing higher up,
since its doing a recursive delete.

In this case, extension was installed as well as removed from the gnome-
extensions website. Usually I install from website, but uninstall from
extensions manager. Do not know if it happens with extensions manager
as well.

Please fix this, because I was frankly shocked that this happened, and
could lead to very bad things (I've never seen a rm -rf follow symlinks,
and wouldn't even want to know what flag would do that and why you would
want that).

What would expect to happen: A simple rm -rf recursive, non-
dereferencing removal of extensions directory.

What happened instead: A recursive removal, dereferencing symlinks,
which can lead anywhere, and be very dangerous. Symlinks may have been
placed in there if someone was working on or tweaking an extension.

[Bug 1970445] [NEW] Browser Save Dialog - Save button does become disabled when switching to a (sub)directory

2022-04-26 Thread Daniel R
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1969622 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1969622

Public bug reported:

When pressing save on a browser, the save dialog opens.
You can press save in the current (last) directory. The button is enabled and
NOT grayed out.

If for example there is a ~/Downloads/test directory, switching to the
test directory does disable the save button.

Description:Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Release:22.04

nautilus:
  Installed: 1:42.0-1ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:42.0-1ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:42.0-1ubuntu2 500
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What you expected to happen
When saving a file from a browser; i expect to be able to select a different
already existing directory as save location and save the file in that directory.

What happened instead
When switching to directory during the download promt, the save button becomes
disabled.

Workaround
When the save is blocked - add and a remove a space to the filename pending.
That does reenable the save.
This is NOT an issue for directories created within the download promt.

[Bug 1769116] Re: Some code accessed the property 'discreteGpuAvailable' on the module 'appDisplay'

2022-03-13 Thread William R. Edgington
I am seeing this after CDROM read errors of audio CDs using rhythmbox on Ubuntu
20.04 with an Nvidia video card.
After that, rhythmbox fails to start, adding this complaint to /var/log/syslog,
and cannot be restarted without logging off or rebooting.

Nearby syslog entries appended.

[Bug 1754125] Re: Rhythmbox stays running in the background after quit

2021-08-05 Thread Paul R
This is a confusing bug. It appears that the app has quit, but music still
plays & it is not obvious how to do anything about it.
I have learned now that you can right click the icon IF you have it in the
dock, but why does the icon not show the app running? - without a dot under the
icon it looks like the app has correctly quit, but it has not. This is a
different behaviour from every other app.

Suggestions: Quit the app completely when you click X. or show the dot
on the dock icon if the app is still running.

[Bug 1759462] Re: Keyboard shortcuts not operational on 18.04

2019-07-26 Thread R P
Just switched to budgie (from lubuntu) and encountered this issue,
specifically while trying to fix the launcher shortcut for 'launch
terminal'. After trying a number of the suggested workarounds, including
the language/region ones, I dug into gnome settings and found that:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.default-applications.terminal exec x
-terminal-emulator

worked for me.

[Bug 1836091] [NEW] Nautilus does not allow thumbnail for image size above 4096 KiB

2019-07-10 Thread Joachim R.
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 18.10, Nautilus doesn't allow thumbnail size for image above
4096KiB. In preference pane, it is not possible to increase value above
4096.

This is a regression, because it was possible before. By the way,
whatever the value of dconf property org/gnome/nautilus/preferences
/thumbnail-limit, if it is above 4096, Nautilus will not observe it
(Setting the max image size for thumbnail generation in Nautilus
preference pane is correctly changing org/gnome/nautilus/preferences
/thumbnail-limit)

Other funny things : the default value for
org/gnome/nautilus/preferences/thumbnail-limit is 10MiB, so if it is at
default value, Nautilus is showing (and observing) its hard-coded max of
"4096" (4MiB) !

No workaround found as there is no anwser to this question:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1140576/nautilus-doesn-allow-thumbnail-for-image-size-above-4096-kib

[Bug 1830513] [NEW] Display scaling inconsistencies while using Wayland

2019-05-25 Thread Landon R. Brainard
Public bug reported:

I have a 2880x1620 onboard display and a 1080p external display that I
use for my computer. As far as I can tell xorg does not allow for
different scaling options for two separate displays. Based on
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1028622/different-display-scale-
settings-18-04 I logged in with Wayland and thought I had achieved the
effect I wanted. However, after I started using my computer, I realized
that some applications were still scaled based on the display I set to
be primary. I have my 1080p display set as primary. Firefox, for
example, looks just fine on my primary, but when I move it to the
higher-DPI display, it does not look correct.

2018-04-10 Thread R. Becke
I had the same issue with Ubuntu 18.40 (final Beta) and HP EliteBook 850
G5 and reported the bug 1762814 and the solution (or rather workaround)
for me was to blacklist amdgpu and this gnome shell crash, all the boot
errors and suspend issues were gone.

How to blacklist amdgpu is described here:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/360709/how-to-blacklist-amdgpu

sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
...
blacklist amdgpu
...

sudo update-initramfs -u

I've as well made my comment on this here:

[Bug 1737087] [NEW] general protection in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5400.1

2017-12-07 Thread David R. Hedges
Public bug reported:

attempting to type in Thunderbird, my screen froze for roughly two
minutes (no input apparently accepted or display updates), and then

the system while the UI was hung.) The general protection error appeared
in dmesg and syslog at [apparently] the time of the UI lock-up.

[Bug 1716014] [NEW] Create Volatile Files and Directories without time limit

2017-09-08 Thread Sven R. Kunze
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 17.04 on Lenovo X270. Works fine so far. But the boot
process **sometimes** hangs. Please note the attachment.

I don't know if that contributes to the issue, but on the X270, the Trackpoint
is very slow. The proposed solution around the Web is:

~# vim /etc/tmpfiles.d/trackpoint.conf #and add the following lines
w /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/speed - - - - 255
w /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/sensitivity - - - - 200
then
~# systemd-tmpfiles --prefix=/sys --create

** Affects: systemd (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: "Boot-up Error"

[Bug 1703068] [NEW] Badly broken rendering of text views

2017-07-07 Thread David R. Hedges
Public bug reported:

Applications utilizing gtk3 text views display terrible rendering
artifacts on my system. A portion of the canvas immediately below the
drawn text view gets redrawn (or perhaps more accurately *not* redrawn),
and then text gets drawn over the top. Subsequent updates to the text
view will just draw on top of the existing text.

This is visible in (among other things) gtk3-demo (from gtk-3-examples),
gnome-calculator, EiskaltDC++ Gtk3. A screenshot comparing gtk3-demo and
gtk-demo (via gtk2.0-examples) is attached.

It's a distinct possibility that the real issue is in the video driver
or compiz or something, but this was my best guess for a starting point,
since I've isolated the issue to [seemingly] gtk3 text views (and
possibly also transparency overlay? the top right and bottom left of
Overlay -> Decorative Overlay exhibits the problem, along with
Transparency also in the Overlay section of gtk3-demo).

Kernel: 4.10.0-26-generic
xorg-server 2:1.19.3-1ubuntu1
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Desktop
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 17.0.3

Although I haven't tried a fresh install, I have confirmed the behavior
persists in a guest session. The issue had briefly gone away a month or
two ago, but I didn't have time to closely track what changed
(presumably: what updates were installed?).

[Bug 1698607] [NEW] "Mode" menu is out of place when launched from keyboard shortcut (unity-settings-daemon)

2017-06-17 Thread David R. Hedges
Public bug reported:

As similarly reported in Bug #1615408 [1], the "Mode" menu for gnome-
calculator appears out of place below the application title bar, however
now it only manifests for me when the calculator is launched from the
keyboard shortcut.

I've seen some circumstances where the calculator is launched with a
thick gnome3-style title bar with an integrated mode menu, but under
normal circumstances, the calculator has a 'normal' title bar, and has
the mode menu in the unity-integrated menu bar.

My keyboard has a built-in "calculator" key, but this can be recreated
by going to System Settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> modify the
"Launch calculator" to something else (e.g. ctrl-alt-c). Press the
shortcut; unity-settings-daemon spawns gnome-calculator with the
improperly located Mode menu.

[Bug 1615408] Re: Theming issues with yakkety gnome-calculator in Unity

2016-10-24 Thread David R. Hedges
I have these two problems on two machines as well (both after upgrading
to 16.10). One machine exhibits *just* the two symptoms you describe,
while another also has an odd bug making the numeric/formula entry text
box transparent (see attached).

Interestingly (/frustratingly, confusingly), the menu and transparency
issues are not present when running a guest session on that machine, but
the menu remains an issue in the guest session on the other machine.

I am having this issue with Kubuntu 14.04 and the latest supported Linux kernel

  $ uname -rvi

Only there were no multiple instances of gvfsd. Killing all gvfsd
processes does not help. This Kubuntu was not an upgrade, but a fresh
install. I did upgrade the kernels though with the latest "Hardware

I restarted binfmt manually by running:

sudo /usr/sbin/update-binfmts --disable

[Bug 1500673] Re: gdm unusable after upgrading to 15.10

When I was fishing around in /etc/gdm/custom.conf I noticed this line:

#WaylandEnable = false

After doing a bit of research I found this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GDM#Use_Xorg_backend which says
that by default, GDM 3.16+ uses Wayland as the default display server. I
installed the xwayland package and GDM started working again. Apparently
xwayland isn't one of GDM's dependencies, given my "apt-cache rdepends

The issue is easily reproducible with a simple instrumentation: if
mdelay(10) is put between mp_setup_entry() and mp_register_handler() calls
in mp_irqdomain_alloc() Hyper-V guest always fails to boot when re-routing
IRQ0. The issue seems to be caused by the fact that we don't disable
interrupts while doing IOPIC programming for legacy IRQs and IRQ0 actually
happens. Decorate manipulations with legacy IRQs with local_irq_save()/
local_irq_restore().

It may make sense to have interrupts disabled for non-legacy IRQs as well
but I'm unaware of any bugs with them at this moment.

2015-05-19 Thread Walter R. Moore
Sebastien, I should point out that I used the standard bug reporting tools
to create the original ticket. It is very surprising to me that these do
not send you the files you need. I hope you have communicated this
deficiency to the team that maintains 'ubuntu-bug'

I have run ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_share_apport_apport-gtk.0.crash -
however, that file was created on May 12, and the unexpected logout has
occured many times since then. I have also
submitted _usr_bin_compiz.1000.crash

[Bug 1454698] [NEW] Unlocking the screen after sleep logs user off and back on

2015-05-13 Thread Walter R. Moore
Public bug reported:

Locking the session from the system menu appears to happen normally, but
the lightdm page shows the default background. Logging in starts a new
session. It seems clear that invoking screen lock kills the session
entirely.

I consider this bug urgent and a show stopper.

[Bug 952108] Re: [Precise] Nautilus: memory leak

2015-05-13 Thread Andrea R.
I can confirm that there is a memory leak in Nautilus when looking at an
image folder with an high zoom level, even as a list. I'm looking at my
Dropbox Camera Uploads folder and in a couple of minutes of scrolling
back and forth, selecting and deleting images, Nautilus memory usage has
grown of about 1Gb up to 25% of the overall system memory (4Gb).

[Bug 1447807] Re: systemctl enable fails to enable a SysV service

2015-05-03 Thread Joachim R.
@pitti I don't understand. @eheydrick said update-rc.d suscceed but
systemd still rturning an error. So why update-rc.d or manual symlink
would change anything ?

This still an issue. Systemd states it is compatible with init.d script.
So it should work.

I have the same issue with a script that is already enabled, but
enabling or starting it ends up with the "Failed to execute operation:
No such file or directory".

[Bug 1325650] Re: CTRL+F turns search off

2014-12-14 Thread David R. Miller
Currently, to search, you either have to press ctrl-F once then enter
the search term, or you must press ctrl-F twice then enter the search
term. If you use the wrong procedure, search doesn't work. That's
unusual, error-prone, and could be easily fixed.

location-service the other half of them??)
