[Bug 1696621] Re: Desktop icons slip under the top bar and dock

2017-08-30 Thread Didier Roche
I'm letting though gnome-shell (should be maybe better), because initial
window placement should take the launcher into account.

[Bug 1696621] Re: Desktop icons slip under the top bar and dock

2017-08-30 Thread Didier Roche
@Daniel: please stop adding a bunch of components to one bug if you are
unsure about it. STRUT here isn't the right answer for intellihide, as
it will prevent all windows to go at the dock place. This is the reason
why my duplicated bug report only targetted nautilus and should remain
that way. Cleaning again the component list…

[Bug 1713026] [NEW] pb with x org video driver ub 17.10 with video card geforce 1050

2017-08-25 Thread ROCHE
Public bug reported:

My pc Asus GL 753V core I7 7700

Since ubuntu version 4.10.0.22 driver x org video bugs and pc don't start.
only works on recovery mode. I upgrade on ubuntu 4.12.0.12 and same problem.
I change to nvidia amd driver and good working but no way to parameter colours
video. screen was sad
I change on nvidia driver to use intel graphic included and video crashed... No
way to return in geforce mode.
nvidia prg on recovery don't propose possibility to change!

I think that is a driver bug of x org video on version ubuntu of superior to
4.10.0.21
Good works on 4.10.0.21

! I Thought That is the problem of this bug :

It's because Driver X Server video proposed with ubuntu don't work on my
pc Asus GL753V core I7 7700. in recovery mode XServer x org video works.
Driver AMD NVIDIA GE Force 1050 (NVIDIA binary driver version 375.82)
works in normal version but NOT in recovery mode Using now Kernel
4.12.0.12

[Bug 1711377] [NEW] Nautilus desktop mode should relearn handline a dock nicely

2017-08-17 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Two fixes that we brought in 11.04 for Unity should be brought back to Nautilus:
* Icons aren't correctly placed in desktop until a first refresh (Nautilus
doesn't take care of workspace size hints before refresh). The icons are thus
below the panel and dock (when dock is always visible)
* When dock is in intellihide mode, the icons are aligned below the dock when
visible. We should teach nautilus to take into account icon dock size in that
mode and shift them.

We discussed it a couple of times with seb on #ubuntu-desktop in the

Please refrain modifying bugs that are opened for tracking without
talking on IRC. This is the second time and give additional work as I
have now to remove the additional components (gnome-shell and unity) you

Reverting the summary, because it's not wayland/non wayland. Like you
can select the ubuntu session and GNOME will be selected, both being X.
So it's rather "you select a session, another one is selected".

[Bug 1698795] Re: Humanity should provide symbolic versions of custom icons for GNOME Shell

2017-08-07 Thread Didier Roche
For now, let's use in the ubuntu session non symbolic icons:
- our theme doesn't support them and there are few changes we'll have app
symbolic icons for our default applications in 17.10.
- for coherence reasons: most of branded apps outside of GNOME (firefox,
chrome, thunderbird) don't have symbolic icons, and so, will appear colorized.
Shipping two different experiences in the same session is weird. Let's ensure
the ubuntu session don't use them by default thus.

[Bug 1706524] Re: Enable switch option to set volume above 100% from media keys and gnome shell UI

2017-07-26 Thread Didier Roche
This isn't a good answer for people working with laptops, where this
issue occurs the most. I don't want have speakers with me everwhere I'm
travelling :p

Note that this option is already shown in gnome-control-center, just not
available from main UI. The option is off by default and people know
what to expect when they switch it on. It's already available in Unity
since 14.04.

[Bug 1706542] [NEW] Can only launch Nautilus once in GNOME shell

2017-07-26 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Press super, type "nautilus", type enter
-> nautilus can be only launched once this way, same with any new pinned dash
icon.

This is due to having both nautilus.desktop and org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop,
despite this one having OnlyShowIn=, GNOME Shell converts nautilus.desktop to
org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop, but still think that nautilus.desktop is running
(as nautilus desktop background drawing icons instance), hence no dash icon
unicity between the already present one and this new one.
The older dash icon desktop file was converted as well, but it doesn't match as
in memory it's org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop.

We end up as well with 2 desktop files with identical names in the dash
preference settings.
The easy fix without impacting Unity is to:
1. append to "OnlyShowIn=Unity;" in org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop, "GNOME"
2. add "NotShowIn=GNOME;" in nautilus.desktop
-> that way, only org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop will be matched by GNOME. There is
no transition issue as Unity is matching nautilus to org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop
already, so no transition needed.

[Bug 1706524] [NEW] Enable switch option to set volume above 100% from media keys and gnome shell UI

2017-07-26 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Some devices have very office-oriented hardware and so, low volume power
speakers.
The normal usage can make the sound unhearable on those configurations.

We added in u-c-c an option to switch it above 100%, per max volume
capability, and unity was picking up this value in its indicator and
u-s-d.

We desire thus to bring the same experience in the new ubuntu GNOME
Shell session: gnome-control-center have a slider enabling setting the
volume above 100%, however, this settings is only available in that
panel, and if you use the media key or the GNOME Shell controls, volume
is reset at 100% at max.

Upstream GNOME doesn't seem to have genuine interests in enabling that feature
(see the discussion on the linked bug report). The proposal is thus:
- only enabling that feature in the *ubuntu* sessions. Don't let the sound
(even if the key was enabled in the ubuntu session) goes above 100% in the
gnome sessions to preserve upstream desired experience.
- reuse the same gsettings key (as long as it's not upstream) as we used to
have. Easy migrations, user's setting preservation and such
- add this switch to gnome-control-center
- modify GNOME Shell agregate menu (volume settings) to represent the % in the
volume slider corresponding to actual setting. We approach this as a distro
patch and not an extension. The extension approach was hacky (overriding a
callback, copying logic), and may work badly with well-designed other
extensions. Hence this untrusive distro-patch.
- patch gnome-settings-daemon volume plugin for respecting this settings in the
global OSD and react to media keys
- add a dependency from the ubuntu-session package on the schema, as reading
the schema is conditioned on the session name.

[Bug 1130137] Re: Better sound settings icons

ok, that looks overall good. I'm wondering though about the
maintainibility of this as it starts to have multiple lines (like, what
happens if a new icon size is shipped?).

What do you think about challenging this (and you ;)) up and adding a
loop in debian/rules in the install target to create those symlinks at

[Bug 616447] Re: Launcher - Quit does not actually quit applications

2016-01-04 Thread Didier Roche
And here we go! I've uploaded it (after some minor modifications like
referencing this bug report so that it can be closed automatically) and
a patch renaming. Otherwise, everything's good!

You can find a reference to it (and see it building) at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/3.2.1-1ubuntu7. You can
even look at the diff if you are interested.

Nice work! Thanks again ;)

[Bug 616447] Re: Launcher - Quit does not actually quit applications

2015-12-21 Thread Didier Roche
The patch looks excellent!

Just a last nitpick: you did see that all other patches in
debian/patches ends with .patch, mind renaming yours to end with a
.patch as well? (and don't forget to do the same change in
debian/patches/series).

Then, just regenerate a debdiff and we should be good to go!

[Bug 1503418] Re: [SRU] [REGRESSION] launching byobu from unity uses the terminal icon rather than the application icon

2015-12-02 Thread Didier Roche
Sorry, Dustin, I have to revert this change right now as all terminal-
based application having a correct match pre-xenial is now matched to
byobu (like weechat and such).

We have a wrapper for this kind of use case that you can use now (it's
working for a couple of cycle) due to the gnome-terminal-server change.

For instance, I have fr.didrocks.Terminals.weechat.desktop shipping:
Exec=gnome-terminal --app-id fr.didrocks.Terminals.weechat -e weechat-curses

I guess we can do something similar for byobu. I'm happy to give a hand
for any changes there.

[Bug 1508338] [NEW] terminal doesn't export its own menu on a new install

2015-10-21 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

New wily install from iso (french selected) on the 21/10/2015. Disk
wiped.

After install, first login:
1. Open a terminal with ctrl + alt + t (the same happens if started from the
dash with + terminal)
-> see that "Terminal" single entry menu is exported on the top unity panel.
However: the other menu entries ("File", "Edit"…) are present, but not exported
(see attachment)

2. right-click and unselect show menubar
-> the "Terminal" single entry is still exported, and as expect, the menu bar
doesn't appear

3. if you reenable it, you are back to state 1.

[Bug 1440549] Re: please convert python scripts to python3

2015-10-14 Thread Didier Roche
The python2 dependency on gconf2 binary package is due to the fact that
migrations scripts are using #!/usr/bin/env python, which is what was
adviced by the ubuntu python maintainers so that the day default python
is changing, we'll get the correct default version.

dh_python3 is then, adding this python2 dependency. It means that day python3
is the default, a simple package rebuild will be needed.
Considering back this bug as "fix released" as nothing has to be done in gconf
itself.

[Bug 1441487] Re: Running any Java program produces messages in the terminal, while rendering many Java applications broken

2015-09-29 Thread Didier Roche
@Robin: the extra message is annoying indeed (only with openjdk), it's
hardcoded in openjdk, writing those env variable on stderr. I agree that
some written script can have some output expectation on stderr (even if
I don't think it's the best and most reliable way of handling output
from a script). I think this part will be redirected in another bug
report (even if we disable jayatana, to keep a track on it and have that
noise turned off on openjdk).

I was wondering if the crash that people here were seeing were due to
openjdk 8 instead of 7. I didn't get any crash with it though with
jayatana installed, (I checked that /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-
amd64/bin/java was executed) when starting android studio on my wily
machine which was pointed as one of the crashy program. The menu is then
correctly exported. Can somebody give a simple (with a program that is
in ubuntu repository) step by step reproducer so that we all start from
the same bases? That would probably help danjaredg to have a better
start.

[Bug 1488795] [NEW] Still getting cached last location even if the permission is denied in system settings after the application started

2015-08-26 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

With OTA5. Note that I don't know if the caching is done in location-
service or is due to PositionSource Qt components.

1. Starts an application with location capability, accept the location
permission
- You have some console.log() callback on position changed
2. Without closing the app, go to system settings and disable location
permission for that app
3. Put back your application in focus
- You will still see regular (at updateInterval refresh) console.log()
callback onPositionChanged, firing the same QGeoCoordinate than the last known
one.

I guess it should send QGeoCoordinate(nan, nan, nan) (and should set the
Error parameter) as when we can't theorically get the current position
anymore.

snippet:

import QtPositioning 5.2
import QtLocation 5.3

PositionSource {
active: true
updateInterval: 12 // 2 mins
onPositionChanged: {
console.log(coordinates  + positionSource.position.coordinate);
}
}

[Bug 1488811] [NEW] No error set on PositionSource when couldn't fetch location

2015-08-26 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

PositionSource, when used on the phone (OTA5), didn't set the right sourceError
on its object.
run the snippet below, deny location permission on that application

1. see that onPositionChanged event is fired, with QGeoCoordinate(nan,
nan, nan) for positionSource.position.coordinate. However, if you read the
documentation:
However, whenever a positionChanged signal has been received, at least
position::coordinate::latitude, position::coordinate::longitude, and
position::timestamp can be assumed to be valid.

So, this forces the developer to add an extra
positionSource.position.coordinate.isValid check. The event shouldn't be
fired to respect the documentation

2. sourceError is always PositionSource.NoError (as if the location was
permitted). It should rather be, from the documentation
PositionSource.AccessError.

--

snippet:

import QtPositioning 5.2
import QtLocation 5.3

PositionSource {
id: pos
active: true
updateInterval: 12 // 2 mins
onPositionChanged: {
console.log(error value: + pos.sourceError)
console.log(coordinates  + positionSource.position.coordinate);

[Bug 1488801] [NEW] PositionSource onPositionChanged event is kept being fired every 12 seconds, not respecting updateInterval (phone only)

2015-08-26 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Attributing to location-service as this only happens on the phone and
not on a wily desktop

1. starts the following snippets on the phone.
- you can see that onPositionChanged is fired approximately every 12s,
independant of the updateInterval you set (like 1000, 2000, 10 000 seconds…).
Note as well that the positionSource.position.coordinate may not even change
(at least from console.log visible digits).
2. try the same on a wily desktop
- the event is only fired at startup.

snippet:

import QtPositioning 5.2
import QtLocation 5.3

PositionSource {
active: true
updateInterval: 6 // 1 mins
onPositionChanged: {
console.log(coordinates  + positionSource.position.coordinate);

developer to understand exactly which version to import, what version is
compatible or part of the same framework that the other one.

[Bug 1439301] [NEW] one autopkgtest failure since 219-5ubuntu1

2015-04-01 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

One autopkgtest fails since 219-5ubuntu1. This one checks that plymouth
is started around the same time than fsckd, and that fsckd/fsck doesn't
fail if plymouth crashes.

The issue comes from debian/patches/v219-stable, which is a backport of
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/systemd/systemd-stable/log/?h=v219-stable
branch (until 16 march). The culpurit commit is
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/systemd/systemd-
stable/commit/?h=v219-stableid=b238b0eaf71449e128480bb5a5875a4b51cafd6f.

What happens is that:
- systemd-hwdb-update.service is After=systemd-remount-fs.service (so once fsck
runs)
- udev is thus started later on
- plymouth-start.service is After=systemd-udevd.service.

So fsck runs on root FS before udev is up, and so plymouth, the whole
boot sequence is delayed.

We have multiple options:
- changing the test to get that use case tested in other ways (in ubuntu,
plymouth is started from the initramfs)
- reintroduce the change if we see that udev being started way later is an
issue.

Attaching 2 journald boot logs, where we can see the differents time
(once with udev/plymouth starting earlier than the other one).

[Bug 1434758] Re: mysqld: errno: 24 - Too many open files

2015-03-24 Thread Didier Roche
Hey postadelmaga: the file is in /lib/systemd/system/mysqld.service in
debian and ubuntu. Those services are shipped in the mysql package, so
closing the systemd tag (adding the tag though).

I looked at mysql upstream, and their service files doesn't let the
limit of files to opened up. Do you have a particular use case with a
very large database? I really vary on the idea we disable the limit
checks on mysql.

Also, did you look at other distros, did they change the limit as well
as distro-patch (it doesn't seem for me)? Maybe you can try opening an
upstream bug to engage the discussion?

[Bug 1427312] [NEW] Add autopkgtests for systemd-fsckd

2015-03-02 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Here are some autopkgtests (handling reboots within the tests) for
systemd-fsckd.

They are mostly testing the robustness of the various daemons:
- starting with or without plymouth
- surviving kill of fsck, systemd-fsckd, systemd-fsck, plymouth

It will be possible to extend it later on with Control+C tests on
plymouth and eventually checking the protocol output.

[Bug 1410106] [NEW] [MIR] java appmenu integration for applications using swing

2015-01-13 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Rationale: Brings appmenu and HUD integration for application using
swing

Availability: The swing support is only building on amd64 and i386 as
java jni.h isn't available on other architectures. The graphical
applications taht are using swing are available only on those archs
though as the issue is with openjdk not working on those other archs.

Quality assurance: the destkop team will handle those issues.

Dependencies: all in main. Note that the java openjdk dependency has
been stripped out in a similar way that we did with gtk and qt appmenu
support to not bring the toolkit if no application is installed.

Maintenance: Simple binding (low). As been tested for years by some
contributors and months by the desktop team.

[Bug 1401984] Re: non persistent logging after cleaning log files on disk

2014-12-16 Thread Didier Roche
Actually, this is not a systemd behavior but seems to be a syslog one.
1. rm /var/log/syslog
2. reboot
- no log (under systemd or upstart)
3. touch /var/log/syslog
4. chmod syslog:adm /var/log/syslog
5. reboot
- logs availables

The cause is that /var/log is 755 and root:syslog (I wonder why it's in syslog
group as it's not 775?), and so can't recreate the file.
If I chmod syslog, indeed, /var/log/syslog is created, but with other rights,
being syslog:syslog instead of syslog:adm.

So, it worths more discussion (retargetting to syslog), pinging Martin
on this.

correct password in the box, the program says the password is wrong. By the way
evolution and other programs work well with online accounts. I'm using
Ubuntu-gnome 14.04 LTS 64bit on different machines and have the same behaviour.

+ 1) open gnome-online-accounts

+ 3) enter user name and password
+ 4) confirm permissions for gnome
+ 5) Black window pops up and asks for google password, but does not accept the
correct password.

[Bug 1282372] Re: [MIR] colord-gtk

2014-04-14 Thread Didier Roche
As per #ubuntu-release:
15:11:09 cjwatson | didrocks:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/colord-gtk/+bug/1282372 - colord-gtk
is currently on the list
   | to move (back) to universe. Did the reverse-dependency in
question never happen, or get reverted, or something?
15:11:09 ubot2 | Launchpad bug 1282372 in colord-gtk (Ubuntu) [MIR]
colord-gtk [Undecided,Fix released]
15:11:55seb128 | cjwatson, didrocks: the new panel codebase ended up having
other issues and we decided to delay the update to next
   | cycle

15:12:03seb128 | cjwatson, didrocks: it can be demoted

15:12:41 didrocks | seb128: hum, so the we'll seed it soon was forgot to
mention it needs demotion I guess
15:12:43 didrocks | ok, demoting now

15:12:47 cjwatson | thanks

15:12:51 didrocks | (and reopening the bug)

15:13:02 cjwatson | It can sit as Fix Committed or whatever, I guess.

15:13:09 didrocks | yep

15:13:31seb128 | didrocks, sorry about that, miscommunication with
robert_ancell I guess (those happen with the little of tz
   | overlap we get)
