[Bug 1888317] [NEW] on screen keyboad pops up nor requested
Public bug reported: Every now and then the on-screen keyboard pops up not intentionally required and no evident way to clear it is available. The only way I can clear it is via "universal access" adding (it is normally not set) and then disabling it. I noticed an issue that was closed and invited those who experiment this problem to re-open an issue... here I am. It only happens when working on my touch notepad (laptop keyboard). Never happens if I use external keyboard. sandro ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 19.10 Package: gnome-shell 3.34.3-1ubuntu1~19.10.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.3.0-46.38-generic 5.3.18 Uname: Linux 5.3.0-46-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu8.9 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Mon Jul 20 23:04:49 2020 DisplayManager: gdm3 InstallationDate: Installed on 2020-02-15 (156 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 19.10 "Eoan Ermine" - Release amd64 (20191017) ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm-256color PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= LANG=it_IT.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash RelatedPackageVersions: mutter-common 3.34.3-1ubuntu1~19.10.1 SourcePackage: gnome-shell UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug eoan third-party-packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1888317 Title: on screen keyboad pops up nor requested To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1888317/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1513251] [NEW] Sync preferences not visible in device properties window
Public bug reported: After upgrading to wily the Sync Preferences list tree box appears empty. Resizing the window does not help. The same problem occurs when booting Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 from a live CD. The device I want to sync music to is an Ipod shuffle model xC323. I also tried resetting it to factory to no avail. [Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Tralalalala: 1. I don't know if you ever coded or worked on a larger project, but I can guarantee you that no matter how good the documentation of a program is you still first have to read through the whole code if it wasn't you writing it. A program consists of the written part which everyone can see and more importantly of the logic behind it that the programmer developed in his mind, it is very hard that any text can give you complete insight of what was going on inside the programmer's head when he was writing the program. 2. I don't give a fuck about that bugs. Fix it yourself.: first of all keep in mind that many proprietary companies really don't give a damn about bugs reported by normal users since they are not worth it economically. They often do not even provide you (as a normal user) with any insight about what issues are known with their software, what's the status and so on. Here you will find plenty of examples which show that developers listen to you no matter who you are. And again, developers are not your slaves. As a developer there is always a certain amount of passion involved in creating a program, hence it is quite unlikely that they will remain indifferent to a major flaw, but you must also respect the fact that they make choices what is for them higher priority that may be different than what you might want. And in this particular case it is not even clear if it is X that should be fixed, since the specification is actually clear and it's the programs that in some cases don't implement it. And keep in mind, it is very likely much easier to fix the bad behaving applications than to radically change a core part of the xserver, possibly causing other regressions that don't make you any happier. 3. Open-source software means that anyone actually has the possibility to contribute, which indeed DOES give you the possibility to improve something if you are not happy with the current situation. Again, it is highly unlikely that developers do not care, but since most of the work is done on a voluntary basis in their free time you should also respect their choices 4. Since you probably never donated anything to any project, while you are free to point out bugs, it is quite rude at best to call developers non-caring whatevers and such. -- MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Geees will people stop complaining for something they got for FREE? It is like if you got a present and start insulting the person which gave it to you because it does not work the way you want. It is certainly okay to point out things that have some design flaws, but please just try to keep in mind that 1) If there were such a trivial fix, it would already have been fixed 2) You cannot simply swap out something buried so deeply into the window manager without risking considerable breakage 3) The person(s) who originally implemented the clipboard may very well not be working on Xorg anymore, hence someone would have to read through the whole unfamiliar code and understand it, just like we 4) Developers are not our slaves, and calling them stubborn and whatever surely won't motivate them to give up more of their free time for people insulting them If we are so determined to see this issue fixed, why not just create a wiki page somewhere and work together to - Identify what is wrong with the current specification - Find out how it works on mac and windows, and discuss what the correct specification should look like - Find out how the current clipboard mechanism is integrated with the other components of the window manager and identify the critical parts which could cause breakage if altered - Work on a fix It is obvious that this is a lot of work, but so would it be for any developer willing to fix it, and the chances of success are considerably higher if the 52 people here would spend time researching instead of writing long, heated comments. -- MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

In my opinion this is a really bad design decision. I think a user actually reads the text of the context menu he uses often only the first few times, then remembers where the relevant entries are approximately located and simply locates them by the icon. Like this the user always has to double check and read if he is not by mistake pressing delete (maybe bypassing trash) instead of what he actually wanted. -- (design decision) Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/407621 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 393158] Re: Incoherent warning message when inserting a forbidden symbol in filename
@ Sebastien Bacher: it is very easily reproducible (it's rather a usability imperfection than a software bug). You just need to create a new file (as I said above, I've tried this with Openoffice.org, Gedit, Archive manager, Brasero, Sound recorder and Gimp and they all had the same behaviour) and then give it a name containing a (/). It will appear a dialog saying THE FOLDER CONTENTS COULD NOT BE DISPLAYED: Error stating file 'home/ale/x' : no such file or directory I think that such a message is misleading, as I said above (I have to admit that I myself didn't understand is meaning until Ilya B came). [Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution
I've done some more testing (switching resolutions, logging out and in at different resolutions) and I must say that my applets always retain their correct position since when I've set all positioning values manually. Though what I noticed is that while right_stick is always preserved, positions change oddly, but consistently, i.e. before I had right-applet-1: position=0 right applet-2: position=1 etc and now I have right-applet-1: position=-80 right-applet-2: position=-79 etc. So from what I can tell, what one would have to do is: 1. fix the ways positions are stored when adding the applet (as stated above somewhere, I have the impression that manually added applets (always?) use left absolute positioning even if they are aligned to a stack of applets to the right) 2. once that is done, simply prevent any changes to gconf while changing resolution. While the second step would brutally said only require to comment out the right sections of the source, the first one would require an pretty deep knowledge of GTK, i.e. how to detect if an applet touches a stack of applets that are aligned to the right and count them, in order to use relative positioning values (i.e. incrementing position values always by one) -- Applets do not scale well with changing resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution
I think one should rather look at the gnome-panel source code, it is more likely that the panel listen to screen resolution changes events and resizes itself accordingly than the screen resolution program itself resizing the panel. [Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution
From what I can judge the problem is not how the panel behaves when it is resized, but how it behaves when adding applets to the panel, i.e. practically always choosing to store the position as absolute from left, instead of from right. In fact, once I corrected all the settings manually in gconf, all applets retain their correct positions no matter how often I change resolution, i.e. I would suggest gnome does not really change any settings in the panel. What would have to be done is, when adding an applet, make the panel detect if the new applet touches an existing stack of applets that is aligned to the left / right, and store the positioning of the new applet consequently: either stick right enabled or disabled, and not using full-width pixel positions, but rather storing à la index. -- Applets do not scale well with changing resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Please do refer to my above comment: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/341463/comments/2 As said, I also do not think that the bug is only in gvfs (in fact, in my opinion it is not a bug in the common way, but a design issue with how gvfs deals with such problems), but it is mainly a problem with the different backends, mainly the cifs one (cfr CIFS VFS: Unexpected lookup error -112). Starting from what package version should I be able to notice the change? Currently I've got gvfs 1.2.0-0ubuntu2 and just today I had the described issue when putting my laptop to sleep while a ssh share was still mounted, then on resume nautilus, the gnome panels (i.e. pretty much everything) hanged, in the virtual terminal messages such as Apr 2 18:57:30 PC4 kernel: [37881.616153] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation Apr 2 18:57:30 PC4 kernel: [37881.616166] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -113 appeared every few seconds. [Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution
The best solution that works for me I've come up so far is the following: The problem seems to be that gnome has difficulties to decide whether it should store the position of an applet as aligned to the left or to the right. Consequently, what I did was in the gconf-editor manually browse to /apps/panel/applets and under applets and objects, manually set the panel_right_stick and position keys to the correct values, incrementing the position value by just one pixel between the different applets/objects in order to be sure that they really stick as much left resp right as they should. I.e.: main menu: position=0 firefox launcher: position=1 [...] user switcher applet: stick right, position=0 date applet: stick right, position=1 volume applet: stick right, position=2 and so on - so far worked well after changing resolution several times, applets always nicely ordered! -- Applets do not scale well with changing resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 341463] Re: Unreachable network mounts cause annoying hangs
The problem is not the program crashing, but I guess rather an issue with the way the behavior with shares is designed. The hang is only due to the cifs subsystem trying to access the unavailable share, and nautilus (and any other program that might want to access the share location, even the terminal, wait for the cifs subsystem to answer, which is what causes them to hang. With my limited knowledge of the cifs subsystem I'd summarize the issue to the following points: - CIFS waits too long before giving up accessing an unavailable share. It should either give up sooner or/and there should be a settable timeout option somewhere. Additional a brute-force option to the umount command would be usefull, as both -l and -f seem to want to contact the host before unmounting, which makes the process terribly slow. - Nautilus and all nautilus-related applications hang if one instance tries to access an unavailable share, this because that specific instance waits for a response from the cifs subsystem. I am not sure if this behavior is limited to cifs shares, possibly it is the same for ssh shares and other. Also, I am not sure this issue has only to do with gvfs: from what I can judge it is gvfs for the part that concerns every nautilus-related application to hang, for the rest the core utilities such as umount themselves. -- Unreachable network mounts cause annoying hangs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/341463 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
