[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2008-12-13 Thread Silvio Ricardo Cordeiro
This is not Hardy-specific. Running Intrepid. It's a kernel bug, and still in
2.6.7.
uname -a: Linux ricardo-desktop 2.6.27-10-generic #1 SMP Fri Nov 21 12:00:22
UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux.

It's the same thing here. Totem in uninterruptible sleep, can't be killed.
The kernel is stuck in exit_mm, after scheduling out the process.

I tried to attach gdb to it, but gdb is [code]wait[/code]ing for totem.
Try to SIGTERM gdb, and it asserts from linux-nat.c:1072.
(Not sure if this will help, though...)

The following message is output to /var/log/syslog, /var/log/kern.log and
/var/log/messages
every 2 minutes (sometimes, it's printed more than once at one time):

[Bug 260785] [NEW] clear the list of locations message

2008-08-23 Thread Silvio Ricardo Cordeiro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Sorry if I'm doing this in the wrong place;
I'm not sure where this should be done.

In a Nautilus window, click Go and Clear History.
This message is shown:

- Are you sure you want to clear the list of locations you have visited?
- If you clear the list of locations, they will be permanently deleted.

That's scary! It's just a list of locations, but the bad wording
makes it sound like the locations themselves will be
permanently deleted. Why not simplify this to a single
sentence saying:

- Are you sure you want to permanently clear the list of locations you
have visited?

Or even leave out the permanently.
Hell, it's obvious that if you clear a history, it will be lost.

[Bug 248576] [NEW] keyboard layout changes before key is released

2008-07-14 Thread Silvio Ricardo Cordeiro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Suppose CTRL+ALT+DEL turns off the computer.
If CTRL+ALT is assigned as a layout switching combination,
CTRL+ALT+DEL won't work anymore. The problem is that,
when CTRL and ALT are pressed together, the layout
is switched right away, consuming the key presses.

Instead, CTRL+ALT (and all the other key combinations
involving only CTRL, ALT, WIN and SHIFT)
should only change the keyboard layout *after* the
keys are released. This would give users the oportunity
of key combos that use the switching keys
(in this case the CTRL+ALT+DEL one).

This shouldn't be a problem for people who are used
to the key being consumed when the key is pressed,
since it's usually pressed and released right after that.
But it would be really good for people who associate
these 4 keys (CTRL, ALT, WIN and SHIFT) with the
idea of *modifier* keys. If they can modify other keys,
one wouldn't expect that they had priority over the
modifiable keys, right?

The problem is that, right now, I can't use the most
common layout-switching combinations because of this.
CTRL+SHIFT is used on text editors with the arrows to
select one-word-at-a-time, CTRL+ALT is part of the
CTRL+ALT+DEL combo...

Well, I'm not completely sure if it's the
Keyboard Indicator's fault. I apologize if it's not.
But I don't really believe it's an OS limitation... Is it?

gnome-applets: 2.22.2-0ubuntu2

[Bug 234777] [NEW] jvm receives wrong path

2008-05-25 Thread Silvio Ricardo Cordeiro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I open a path through the terminal.
I launch a jar file using java -jar.
Everything works.

I open a path through nautilus.
I launch a jar file with double-click.
The file's supposed to open with some
Sun Java 6 Runtime (I suppose it's /usr/bin/java...?)
The program is launched, but the current path is
my home folder (/home/my-user/.)!

I mean, this code:
  JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,
  new File(.).getAbsolutePath());
will show the current directory when my program
is launched with java -jar. But when launched by nautilus
it will always print my home folder (whatever the current folder is)!

Right-click - Open with - Open with another application... -
- Use a custom command - (typing) java -jar
won't help. It's as if nautilus switched the current
directory specially for launching the JVM,
though I'm not sure it will only do that for
/usr/bin/java (but since that's the only
language I know that is launched through a VM...)

And, yes, I know, I'll take a good look at Python
as soon as I get some free time ;)

[Bug 234777] Re: jvm receives wrong path

2008-05-25 Thread Silvio Ricardo Cordeiro
I don't think the directory should be changed.
I think nautilus should call the JVM using the current directory,
but it seems to be calling it using my home (/home/my-user).

When I launch java in the terminal, the JVM thinks the current
directory is the current directory.

When I launch java through nautilus, the JVM thinks the current
directory is /home/my-user, regardless of the current directory.
In this case, launching through nautilus, printing the current directory
will always print /home/my-user, no matter which directory
my .jar file actually is in.
