[Bug 1091514] [NEW] Unable to play any media files

2012-12-17 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Public bug reported:

I am unable to play any media files or even any online media. I've tried
mp3 and ogg files through Banshee and Totem, and even YouTube in Chrome
doesn't work.

Sometimes it's a crackling skipping sound, while others it just crashes
the player at the start of the file.

I'm happy to debug, but I don't know where to start with audio/media
issues.

[Bug 1072493] [NEW] Terminal keeps reverting to default size during use

2012-10-28 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Public bug reported:

When using the terminal, if you resize it to something other than the
default size (but don't maximize it), then it will randomly revert back
to the default size.

It seems to happen randomly without any specific cause.

The only work around is to maximize the terminal, but that isn't often a
good solution.

[Bug 1061892] [NEW] Internal Error when trying to connect

2012-10-04 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Public bug reported:

Every time I boot up Empathy refuses to connect to my two gTalk accounts for a
while. Sometimes it resolves itself within 5 minutes, while other times it
takes a lot longer.
It doesn't matter if I change my online status to Offline and back to Online,
or click the little blue reload button, nothing seems to work.

This has been happening since I upgraded to 12.10 and Empathy was tied
into the Online Accounts system.

What can I do to debug this so it can be fixed?

[Bug 1057246] [NEW] ~/.gvfs directory keeps breaking

2012-09-26 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Public bug reported:

I use the ~/.gvfs directory as a way to access mounted systems for
access in editors, etc (i.e. Geany). It allows me to point the editor at
the host subdir within ~/.gvfs and easily browse/edit the files.

Since upgrading to 12.10 it keeps breaking.

valorin@gandalf:~$ cd ~/.gvfs
bash: cd: /home/valorin/.gvfs: Transport endpoint is not connected

It sometimes is broken from login, and I need to restart to fix it up,
and other times I can use it happily for hours before it will suddenly
decide to stop working.

It's very frustrating since I need to close down everything (and
potentially lose work since I can't save it on my remote host) and
restart each time it happens.

[Bug 665552] Re: CTRL-C does not work in irc chat window

2011-11-14 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
I am experiencing this bug with all chat windows under 11.10, Unity, with
Empathy 3.2.0.
Often the 'copy' option under the right-click menu does not work either.

This is a very frustrating bug when you often have people sending you
details (like server addresses, and code blocks) which need to be copied
somewhere locally.

[Bug 800925] Re: Gnome Terminal empties command history every run

2011-08-13 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
I've had this problem where the first command I run on the terminal was
through sudo. This created by .bash_history file owned by root, so it
could never be written in. This might, or might not, be the cause of
your problem...

To test this, can you run this command:

ls -la ~/.bash_history

[Bug 806434] Re: Unable to install 11.04 amd64 on a ThinkPad L520

2011-07-12 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Unfortunately, my laptop is running a newer version of BIOS than is
available on the Lenovo website...

I've got:
dmi.bios.date: 06/07/2011
dmi.bios.vendor: LENOVO
dmi.bios.version: 8GET33WW (1.10)

I'm reluctant to downgrade the BIOS if the version I have isn't
available - in case it breaks the system completely.

2011-07-08 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Massimo Forti,

Thanks for those links about ACPI and APIC, it's still pretty confusing
but I'm happy I have a working system now with noapic turned on.

The funny thing is, that blog post you linked is actually my blog, I
posted the steps I used for any others who might have the same problem
:) I've turned it into a static troubleshooting page: http://stephen
.rees-carter.net/thinkpad-l520-ubuntu-11-04/

Now that I have a working system, what information should I provide? What
commands should I run and post output of?
I know there is a list of provide these for Kernel bugs, I'll try and find it
now...

[Bug 749776] Re: Nautilus won't start up and the desktop icons are frozen (can't be clicked)

2011-04-10 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
I agree that it's a pretty important bug - I can't mount any
drives/network shares, which makes it impossible to do my development
work.

A work around I can use occasionally is:

1) Click on the nautilus launcher icon a couple of times
2) Wait until the grayed out windows appear
3) Right click on the launcher icon and select Quit
4) Confirm the Force Close and wait for all windows to disappear
5) Click on the launcher icon again, it should load a usable window

It only works occasionally, and relies upon the grayed out windows to
appear - which only appear some times.

[Bug 750938] [NEW] About Me dialog not saving details

2011-04-04 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

This sounds like bug #525520, but that one has apparently been fixed so
I thought it was best to report a new one.

Basically, any changes I perform within the About Me dialog are lost
when I close it and open it again.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Click on your username in top bar on right and go down to select 'About
Me...'
2. Update any of the details within the dialog
3. Click the 'Close' button on the bottom right
4. Repeat Step #1
5. The dialog pops up and is empty!

Maybe put it in the Me Menu (i.e. the one with your username, next to
the session indicator). Links to other settings (Chat, Broadcast, User)
are in there, so it might fit better with them.

@chicoff I've been trying ever since I started it, but I don't know how.
There is no edit icon next to the Importance field...

This is obviously a critical bug, can someone with access please set the
priority to high so it can get fixed? We shouldn't have to manually
patch a bug which would be affecting a lot of people and causing a lot
of damage to their work.

experience this issue.

I notice that it happens every time I run Rhythmbox, and as it starts
minimized I need to run it again before the window will come up and be
useful.

[Bug 603451] [NEW] empathy -h does not start hidden

2010-07-09 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I have added empathy -h into my Startup Applications list so Empathy
is always running when I login. The -h used to force it to load without
showing the window, but it is now showing the window on login - which is
annoying.

I am running 10.10 i386.

Is there anything else I can provide to help debug this?
