[Bug 1326414] [NEW] Hang in change password dialog

2014-06-04 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

The change password dialog can hang in certain situations.

To reproduce:
1) Launch system settings
2) Open the User accounts control panel
3) Click the password 'dots' to open the Changing password dialog
4) Enter the current password, and enter a password that the system thinks is
weak, like 'ubuntu'
5) Press the 'change' button'. A dialog should appear that says, The new
password is too simple. Please choose another password.. Close the dialog.
6) In the change password dialog, re-enter the weak password from step 4
7) Press the change button

Expected results:
Either the system accepts the new password, or the The new password is too
simple dialog from step 5 appears.

Actual results:
The Changing password dialog is greyed out and the cursor changes to the
spinning please wait cursor. The password is not changed.

This is 100% reproducible for me. May be related to

[Bug 1287341] Re: Touchscreen controls both screens in dual-monitor setup

2014-05-28 Thread Steve Magoun
@Alberto: The package in http://people.canonical.com/~amilone/lp1287341/
fixes the behavior of the touchscreen for me. The touschreen now works
as expected with and without an external monitor. Tested on a Dell XPS13
with factory-installed touchscreen.

[Bug 1297566] [NEW] Dialpad does not accept touchscreen input

2014-03-25 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

I am using empathy to make VOIP calls to a conference call system. I am
trying to use my touchscreen to enter numbers in the dialpad, but that
does not work. Using the mouse to enter numbers in the dialpad works
just fine.

To reproduce:
1) Start a new VOIP call (Ctrl-M); make a call (I am dialed into a conference
line)
2) In the call window, click the dialpad button to show the dialpad
3) Use the touchscreen to enter numbers in the dialpad

Expected results:
Using the touchscreen to enter numbers in the dialpad works: pressing a number
on the dialpad results in the number being displayed in the small text field
above the dialpad

Actual results:
Using the touchscreen to enter numbers in the dialpad does not work. The
dialpad buttons depress as if the button was being pressed, but the numbers are
not entered in the small text field above the dialpad

Using the mouse to click buttons in the dialpad works just fine for me.
The touchscreen itself is working fine on this machine.

[Bug 1288855] [NEW] Shrinking windows - each new window is smaller than the previous one

2014-03-06 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

Each time I open a nautilus window, the window is smaller than the
previous window I opened. The windows shrink only in the vertical
dimension. The first window might be 400px high. The next window might
be 380px high. The next one is 360px high. And so on.

To reproduce:
1) Open a window in nautilus. Observe the size.
2) Close the window
3) Open a new window

Expected results:
The window from step 3 is the same size as the one in step 1

Actual results:
The window from step 3 is not as tall as the one in step 1

This is 100% reproducible on my system. It's a recent regression in
14.04. I suspect it's related to recent changes to give the option of
in-window menus for this app (I have not enabled the in-window menus, I
am still using global menus).

[Bug 1280300] [NEW] Desktop contents displayed on resume, before lock screen is shown

2014-02-14 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

I am running 14.04. When I resume from sleep, the contents of my desktop
(including any open windows, emails, etc) are displayed onscreen briefly
before the unlock screen is shown. This potentially allows an attacker
to view the contents of a locked screen.

To reproduce:
1) Suspend a machine, e.g. by closing the lid
2) Resume the machine

Expected results:
Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the screensaver unlock screen.

Actual results:
Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the set of open windows that
were displayed before the machine was put to sleep. After a second or two, the
unlock screen is drawn and you have to enter a password to unlock the machine.

This is reproducible on my system.

[Bug 1276833] [NEW] indicator icon invisible using radiance theme

2014-02-05 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

I use the radiance theme. A recent update to indicator-keyboard changed
the icon so it is now effectively invisible on the panel.

To reproduce:
1) Boot with the radiance theme, look at the panel

Expected results:

[Bug 1239886] [NEW] regression: keyboard backlight hotkeys no longer functional

2013-10-14 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

A recent change to 13.10 has broken userspace control of the keyboard
backlight on my MacbookPro3,1. This was working well until about a week
ago (1st week of October 2013).

The backlight device in the kernel still works; for example this will turn off
the keyboard backlight:
echo 0 | sudo tee -a /sys/class/leds/smc\:\:kbd_backlight/brightness

Therefore I assume it's a gnome-settings-daemon (or upower?) regression.

To reproduce:
1) Login. Note the state of the keyboard backlight (should beon, 100%)
2) Press a keyboard backlight hotkey

Expected results:
Keyboard backlight changes when you press the hotkey

Actual results:
Nothing happens when you press any of the keyboard backlight hotkeys

2013-10-14 Thread Steve Magoun
** Summary changed:

- regression: keyboard backlight hotkeys no longer functional
+ regression: hotkeys no longer functional

** Description changed:

- A recent change to 13.10 has broken userspace control of the keyboard
- backlight on my MacbookPro3,1. This was working well until about a week
- ago (1st week of October 2013).
+ [edit: originally this bug was just about keyboard backlight hotkeys,
+ but it turns out all hotkeys are broken]

- The backlight device in the kernel still works; for example this will turn
off the keyboard backlight:
+ A recent change to 13.10 has broken hotkeys on my MacbookPro3,1. This
+ was working well until about a week ago (1st week of October 2013).
+
+ The underlying (kernel) functionality still works; for example this will turn
off the keyboard backlight with no problem:
  echo 0 | sudo tee -a /sys/class/leds/smc\:\:kbd_backlight/brightness

  Therefore I assume it's a gnome-settings-daemon (or upower?) regression.

  To reproduce:
- 1) Login. Note the state of the keyboard backlight (should beon, 100%)
- 2) Press a keyboard backlight hotkey
+ 1) Login
+ 2) Press a hotkey (for example screen brightness; keyboard backlight; etc)

  Expected results:
Keyboard backlight changes when you press the hotkey

  Actual results:
- Nothing happens when you press any of the keyboard backlight hotkeys
+ Nothing happens when you press any of the hotkeys

[Bug 1124408] [NEW] wav file garbled in totem, plays fine in gst-launch and mplayer

2013-02-13 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

I tried to pay a .wav file in totem. The audio is garbled in totem but
plays back fine in mplayer or when using gst-launch from the command
line. This is a problem because Thunderbird uses Totem as the default
handler for .wav audio, so .wav attachments to mails will be opened in
Totem.

To reproduce:
1) Open the attached .wav file in Movie Player (totem)

Expected results:
The audio file plays back with no errors

Actual results:
The audio is garbled during playback

The file plays fine through gst-launch:
~$ gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///path/to/msg0001.WAV

Mplayer also plays it without garbling the audio.

Not all .wav files are affected. For example the files in
/usr/share/sound/alsa/ work fine in totem.

The audio was recorded from a voicemail box on an asterisk phone system.

[Bug 1124449] [NEW] Incorrect playback of 1080p movie from phone

2013-02-13 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

I took the attached movie of my unity desktop using my phone's camera.
The top half of the movie renders properly in totem, but the bottom half
is blurred and does not draw correctly. It looks like the bottom half of
the movie is really a single row of pixels that's been scaled vertically
(see the attached screenshot).

To reproduce:
1) Play back the attached movie in totem

Expected results:
The movie plays normally

Actual results:
The bottom half of the movie is either decoded or rendered incorrectly.

Playback from gst-launch works fine:
~$ gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///home/steve/Desktop/IMG_1433.MOV

Other movies seem to play fine; I'm not sure what's special about this one.

[Bug 1041432] Re: Any application which uses v4l2src element can be froze when recording video (e.x. cheese)

2013-02-07 Thread Steve Magoun
@Seb: The 'LTS backport stack' is the quantal kernel + xorg that was
backported to precise for hardware enablement. The packages in the lts
backport stack include linux-lts-quantal and xserver-org-lts-quantal.
The bug can occur when that backport stack is used with a precise
userspace.

[Bug 950160] Re: Unity blocks other programs from binding globally to Super+* (* = any key)

2012-12-03 Thread Steve Magoun
@Daniel:
The user never touches the super key in the scenarios we care most about; the
user only presses the display switch hotkeys on the laptop. Maybe this is not
relevant, and reducing the timeout in Unity will still help. It seems like an
important detail though.

Note that in our testing in comment #86, the dash still opens if you
hold the 'F1' for ~1 second - it does not have to be a quick tap.

[Bug 950160] Re: Unity blocks other programs from binding globally to Super+* (* = any key)

2012-11-29 Thread Steve Magoun
There is a fix in testing here:
https://launchpad.net/~timo-jyrinki/+archive/quantal-compiz-unity-testing
(ppa:timo-jyrinki/quantal-compiz-unity-testing).

My findings:

I tested the packages in the PPA on a Dell XPS13 with 12.04 and all of the
latest updates from precise-updates. My findings:
1) The display switch hotkey now works; pressing it cycles through video modes
as expected. The 'p' character is not emitted.
2) A side effect of the fix is that the dash opens when you press the display
switch hotkey

I think the side effect needs to be fixed.

Some more information about the side effect:
* The display switch hotkey is Fn-F1
* If you press Fn-F1 and release both Fn and F1 at the same time, the dash opens
* If you press Fn-F1 and release F1 before releasing Fn, the the dash does not
open
* If you press Fn-F1 and release Fn before releasing F1, the dash opens
* If you press Fn-F1 and do not release either key, the Unity keyboard
shortcuts window opens

The packages I tested from the PPA were:
compiz 1:0.9.7.8+bzr3121-0ubuntu2~test1
unity 5.18.0-0ubuntu2~test1
and the corresponding versions of libunity-core-5.0-5, unity-common,
unity-services, compiz-core, compiz-gnome, and compiz-plugins-default

[Bug 950160] Re: Unity blocks other programs from binding globally to Super+* (* = any key)

2012-10-31 Thread Steve Magoun
I tested the following on a Dell XPS13 running 12.04 LTS. These packages
did not fix the super-p key behavior:

compiz - 1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.5~test2
gnome-settings-daemon 3.4.2-0ubuntu0.4
unity - 5.16.0-0ubuntu2~test1

The unity + compiz packages came from https://launchpad.net/~unity-
team/+archive/ppa/+packages

To install the unity/compiz packages I used 'apt-add-repository ppa
:unity-team/ppa' then apt-get update apt-get install unity compiz.

After installing these packages and rebooting, I observed that the
function key for monitor-switching (Fn-F1) did not cause the video
output to switch. Instead the super key seems to be consumed by Unity
and the 'p' key is passed to applications - resulting in a stray 'p'
being typed into whatever terminal/text box/application has focus.

[Bug 1049991] [NEW] [regression] iPhone name displayed incorrectly

2012-09-12 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

When I plug my iPhone into my system running 12.10, it is automatically
mounted in ~/.gvfs. The name of the mount point is incorrect - some
characters in the name are replaced by whitespace. For example, my
phone's name is Steve's iPhone The apostrophe (which might be a
unicode right single quotation mark U+2019, I'm not sure) is not
displayed in the name of the mount point.

This is a regression from 12.04, in which it worked properly.

To reproduce:
1) Plug in an iPhone with a name that contains an apostrophe (or unicode right
single quotation mark?)
2) View the contents of ~/.gvfs (e.g. `ll ~/.gvfs`)

Expected results:
The name of the mount points created for the phone match the name of the
iPhone. No extra characters are inserted in the name of the mount points.

Actual results:
The name of the mount points created have extra spaces, and the apostrophe is
gone. For example:
steve@steve-laptop:~$ ll ~/.gvfs/
total 4
dr-x-- 4 steve steve0 Sep 10 08:54 ./
drwxr-xr-x 73 steve steve 4096 Sep 12 10:07 ../
drwx-- 1 steve steve0 Dec 31 1969 Documents on Steve s iPhone/
drwx-- 1 steve steve 544 Sep 9 10:57 Steve s iPhone/

(Note the extra spaces between my name and the 's' - these should not be
there).

The strange naming, with extraneous spaces, is also seen in nautilus and
other windows that display the name of the phone.

[Bug 1044520] [NEW] Open indicator menu inhibits media keys

2012-08-31 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

Media keys do not function if an indicator menu is open. I noticed this
when I had the sound indicator menu open and I tried to use a media key
on my keyboard to adjust the volume.

To reproduce:
1) On a keyboard with media keys such as sound up/down/mute, press one of the
media keys and observe that it works as expected
2) Click the sound indicator to open the sound indicator menu
3) Press the media key from step one

Expected results:
The media key performs its normal function and the corresponding OSD is
displayed

Actual results:
Nothing happens (sound does not get louder/softer, for example) and no OSD is
displayed

This seems to affect all media keys regardless of their function, and
any indicator menu can trigger the behavior.

[Bug 1040839] Re: Thunderbird hangs accessing eds on startup

2012-08-28 Thread Steve Magoun
Similar to guyster, I see 2 versions of libedataserver loaded - 15.0 and
17.0 - with thunderbird 15.0+build1-0ubuntu1.

$ cat /proc/`pidof thunderbird`/maps | grep edataserver

[Bug 1040839] Re: Thunderbird hangs accessing eds on startup

2012-08-28 Thread Steve Magoun
Purging libedataserver-1.2-15 seems to have done the trick - after doing
so, thunderbird is functional and I see just one instance of
libedataserver in /proc/*/maps

I still have 2 versions of libedataseerver on disk:
ii libedataserver-1.2-16 3.4.3-1
amd64Utility library for evolution data servers
ii libedataserver-1.2-17 3.5.90-0ubuntu1

[Bug 1035082] [NEW] OSD for enable/disable WiFi or bluetooth with a hotkey

Many laptops have a hotkey for switching display modes. The behavior is

[Bug 1034090] [NEW] Hotkeys not functional after upgrade to quantal

2012-08-07 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10, none of the hotkeys/media keys on
my keyboard are no longer functional. Specifically, the brightness
up/dn, volume up/dn/mute, keyboard backlight up/dn/off keys and the
media control keys (rew/play/ff) don't work perform the expected
functions.

I've confirmed that the underlying functionality works- for example I can
adjust the keyboard backlight from the command line via:
`echo 0 /sys/class/leds/smc\:\:kbd_backlight/brightness`

Machine is a MacbookPro 3,1 with an external Apple USB keyboard. Hotkeys
are non-functional on both the internal and external keyboards.

To reproduce:
1) Press the volume mute hotkey

[Bug 1034090] Re: Hotkeys not functional after upgrade to quantal

2012-08-07 Thread Steve Magoun
** Description changed:

After upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10, none of the hotkeys/media keys on
- my keyboard are functional. Specifically, the brightness up/dn, volume
- up/dn/mute, keyboard backlight up/dn/off keys and the media control keys
- (rew/play/ff) don't work perform the expected functions.

I've confirmed that the underlying functionality works- for example I can
adjust the keyboard backlight from the command line via:

[Bug 993440] [NEW] No suspend option for critical battery state in power settings UI

2012-05-02 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

The gnome-control-center power UI offers 2 options for When power is
critically low: Hibernate and Power Off. There should be a 'Suspend'
option as well, for a couple reasons:

1) Some people (like me) want their computer to suspend when it reaches a
critical low-battery state
2) We offer 'Suspend' as an option for the lid closed action, so we should
offer it as a critical battery option for consistency

(Note that neither hibernate nor power off is selected by default in the
When power is critically low combobox on a fresh install. Instead the
combobox has no selection at all. This is probably a separate bug)

To reproduce:
1) Launch the Power settings app
1a) Observe the When power is critically low combobox; nothing is selected
2) Click the When power is critically low combobox

Expected results:
Suspend is an option for critical-battery action

Actual results:
Suspend is not an option for critical-battery action

[Bug 949296] Re: gnome-settings-daemon always prevents suspend on macbookpro5, 3

2012-03-15 Thread Steve Magoun
Confirmed the patch fixes the regression for me - suspend now works when
I close the lid.

This is apparently related to having the binary NVIDIA driver installed.
gnome_rr_output_is_laptop() from gnome-desktop tries to guess whether a
system is a laptop based on the output name, but the heurisitc doesn't
work for the NVIDIA binary driver.

[Bug 948844] Re: Closing laptop lid does not suspend

2012-03-15 Thread Steve Magoun
I've encountered the same regression in 12.04. From a bit of digging it
seems it's related to the implementation of gnome_rr_output_is_laptop()
in gnome-desktop. g-s-d uses this function to determine whether an
output is an internal or external display; g-s-d only wants to suspend
if there are no external displays in use. The problem is that
gnome_rr_output_is_laptop() doesn't work properly in some cases. One
case is when the NVIDIA binary driver is present; another recently-fixed
case was systems with eDP panels (bug 933710).

There is a patch in bug 949296 that fixes the problem for me (I have the
NVIDIA driver case).

[Bug 932126] [NEW] 'Media contains photos' message right-justified

2012-02-14 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

The buttons+text nautilus adds to windows for devices containing media
is laid out poorly (see attached screenshot)

To reproduce:
1) Plug in a phone or USB drive containing media
2) In a nautilus window, navigate to the device from step #1

Expected results:
The Nautilus window has a message that These files are on a digital audio
player with an Open Rhythmbox Music Player button, and/or a message that
The media contains digital photos with an Open Shotwell Photo Manager
button. The messages are left-justified within the nautilus window

Actual results:
The messages+buttons are right-justified within the nautilus window, which
looks awkward (see screenshot). There are a couple specific problems:
* There is no padding between the right edge of the message and the edge of the
window, so the text is jammed against the edge of the window which doesn't
match the layout of any other text
* For left-to-right languages, the button comes before the explanatory text so
you have to start reading in the middle of the line then jump back to the
beginning of the line
* There is a funny stair-step effect of buttons within the window; they are not
vertically aligned to anything

A better layout might be to move the explanatory text to the left of the
buttons, left-justify the text, right-justify the buttons, and leave a
space between the buttons + text that can expand as necessary with the
size of the window.

[Bug 925503] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_ui_manager_new_merge_id()

2012-02-14 Thread Steve Magoun
I reproduced this in 12.04 by:
1) Plug in an iPhone
2) Navigate around the iPhone's filesystem for a bit
3) Unmount the iPhone from within nautilus by clicking the 'unmount' icons in
the left-hand side column
4) Click the close button on the nautilus window. Notice that nothing happens.
Click it again...and again

[Bug 750740] Re: MacbookPro keyboard backlight toggle button not functional

2011-12-20 Thread Steve Magoun
Still broken in 11.10, though broken in a different way. In 11.10 the
backlight toggle behaves the same as the adjacent 'backlight brightness
down' button. It should toggle the backlight on/off, not decrease the
backlight brightness incrementally.

** Changed in: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu)
   Status: Expired = Confirmed

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

My MacbookPro 3,1 has a keyboard backlight toggle button (F8) in
addition to the keyboard backlight up/down buttons (F9/F10). The
keyboard backlight up/down buttons correctly adjust the keyboard
backlight and display a notification, but the toggle button doesn't. Do
we need to handle GPM_BUTTON_KBD_BRIGHT_TOGGLE in addition to
GPM_BUTTON_KBD_BRIGHT_[UP,DOWN] in the key-handling code in gpm-
  backlight-kbd.c?

[Bug 856988] Re: totem cannot play quicktime file after upgrade to oneiric

2011-12-19 Thread Steve Magoun
One more confirmation...deleting the registry in ~/.gstreamer0.10 makes
playback work again. Attached is a copy of my .gstreamer0.10 directory with 2
registries:
1) The original one that prevents quicktime movies from working
2) A rebuilt registry that allows quicktime movies to work

I can reproduce the failure to play quicktime moves at will by replacing
the new registry with the old (busted) one.

[Bug 854238] [NEW] Regression: Macbook Pro 3, 1 screen brightness hotkeys don't work

2011-09-19 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

The screen brightness hotkeys on my MacBook 3,1 do not adjust the
backlight's brightness. This is a regression from 11.04. I have a USB
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad w/ dedicated function keys for
screen brightness. These also stopped working.

The kernel seems to be fine; I can adjust screen brightness from the command
line:
$ echo 7 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/apple_backlight/brightness

This is similar to bug 849110 about keyboard brightness hotkeys (not to
be confused with screen brightness hotkeys), which I've also
encountered.

The volume up/down/mute hotkeys on this keyboard do continue to function
properly.

[Bug 854124] [NEW] libreoffice-writer not default file handler for .doc files

2011-09-19 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

In 11.10, gedit is the default file handler for .doc files. I expected
the default handler to be libreoffice-writer, which is the default
handler for .docx and other filetypes used by MS Office.

gedit is pretty bad at opening .doc files (at least the ones I've
tried). The effect on the user is that double-clicking a doc-file fails
to display the file.

To reproduce:
* Double-click any .doc file

Alternatively:
In a terminal, 'touch foo.doc touch foo.docx'
Double-click each foo* file; foo.doc opens in gedit and foo.docs opens in
LibreOffice.

I believe this is a regression from 11.04; I first noticed it after
upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 beta 1.

[Bug 849110] [NEW] Regression: keyboard backlight hotkeys no longer work

2011-09-13 Thread Steve Magoun
Public bug reported:

They keyboard backlight control hotkeys on my Macbook Pro (3,1) no
longer function properly in 11.10. This is a regression from 11.04, and
I believe a regression from 11.10 beta 1.

There are 3 keys on the keyboard:
Keyboard backlight toggle
Keyboard backlight down
Keyboard backlight up

In 11.04, the keyboard backlight up/down keys adjusted the keyboard
backlight as expected, and the corresponding OSD notifications worked as
well. The 'keyboard backlight off' never functioned properly.

At some point after 11.10 beta 1, the keyboard backlight hotkeys stopped
functioning properly. The keyboard backlight is no longer controllable
using the hotkeys. Pressing any of the 3 hotkeys results in the 'full
backlight' OSD being displayed, with no change to the actual keyboard
backlight.

I can still control the keyboard backlight manually from a command line. For
example, to turn the keyboard backlight on to 100% then off:
echo 255 | sudo tee -a /sys/class/leds/smc\:\:kbd_backlight/brightness
echo 0 | sudo tee -a /sys/class/leds/smc\:\:kbd_backlight/brightness
