[Bug 2065582] [NEW] there is no way to disable the onscreen keyboard
Public bug reported: I have an XPS13 and am running Ubuntu in xorg because that is required for my Plover stenotype program. The program uses an external keyboard. I need the onscreen keyboard disabled, because I am using the plover keyboard to input information, but I cannot do it, either through Settings / Accessibility / Typing or trying various terminal entries suggested by chatgpt. (It suggests disabling onboard, but the program was not installed, and installing it and then disabling it did nothing.) [Bug 1216292] [NEW] top program bar does not work with lenovo touchpad -- regression
Public bug reported: So I woke up this morning (24-Aug-13) and my synaptic touchpad works to move the mouse but the buttons do not work on metacity components such as those three little circles in the upper left, nor to re-position the box, nor the side sliders. Keystroke commands work fine, as does my Lenovo touch screen. But the buttons to my synaptics touch pad seem to be non-operational. So I blamed metacity, because it wasn't recognizing the input from my touchpad buttons. The problem could also, of course, be with the drivers somehow. Funny, that little red button in the middle of my Lenovo typepad doesn't seem to work at all, but I usually don't use it so I'm not sure if the issues are connected. [Bug 726470] [NEW] Metacity crashes about 15 seconds after boot-up and Clearlooks vanishes
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: metacity I have a Lenovo X201 tablet computer with a Wacom touch screen. I have the Desktop theme set to Clearlooks, and use my own wallpaper picture. I think MAYBE this bug affects me. I have natty 64 studio, installed from the 19-Dec daily build. I tried to compile 64-bit wine from git, install and run a simple program (notepad) but cannot. [Bug 502142] Re: my keyboard deconfigure every time i reboot my system
Here's what happens to me. It's very similar but not identical. My primary keyboard layout is the Dvorak. I used that even to install the system. Sometimes my husband needs to use the computer in the morning, so in system / preferences / keyboard I set the default to USA, and close down the computer. In the morning, my husband boots up. The keyboard preferences are still set to USA, but the actual keyboard is Dvorak. In other words, the identities have changed. Dvorak is now USA, and USA is now Dvorak. But not entirely. When I get up, I open hnb, a terminal program. When I press the keys, the letters come out Dvorak even though the preferences are still set to USA. But then I press CTL-S to sort, and the keys register as USA! The only way to straighten everything out is to re-boot with everything set to the installation keyboard, which is Dvorak. So basically, when the computer boots, it goes toward the installation keyboard, and disregards the changes in preferences / keyboard. [Bug 400820] Re: gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu
I have moved to that comment, too. People tend to think of wine as running stupid and optional games, but it's the only way for disabled people to get speech recognition on Linux, and I refuse to give it up. And by the way, when alsa/wine runs speech rec, it runs it very well. The speed is great, the recognition is great, for text entry. Another thing, pulseaudio will always be a handicap to those who use speech rec, because of latency issues and the layer of overlap, speech rec will never run with pulse as well as it does with alsa alone. Speech rec is a much more complex program than any single music app, or Skype. [Bug 400820] Re: gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu
After a check of synaptic, I have noticed that removing, and even purging pulseaudio does not remove many of its component parts, which parts continue to function, uselessly spinning the wheels looking for pulseaudio. Gnome-volume-control applet is only one of them. One of the sound apps that is called up in firefox clearly tries to grab pulsuaudio, and starts the volume-control applet running. In firefox, when the application says this media requires a plug-in the suggested plug-in is likely to require pulse, because the system does not check whether pulse is there or not. Clearly, removing pulseaudio is tricky and requires its own page of documentation, at the very least. The good situation would be to have the --purge command remove ALL related programs that grab it, like gnome-volume-control. -- gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/400820 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 317890] [NEW] deskbar-applet in ubuntustudio corruptable caused massive data loss
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: deskbar-applet I have loaded Ubuntu Studio Jaunty twice in the last 4 days. Both times, the deskbar applet misbehaved in a way that caused me to lose most of the information on my home directory. I clicked the ubuntu icon in the corner to access the drop-down menu, and suddenly almost everything deleted in my home folder. I emptied the wastebasket -- and my home folder deleted again! Not everything deleted... a few folders with names that started with text instead of numbers stayed. But any system-created folder, like Documents or Pictures, came up empty. [Bug 317890] Re: deskbar-applet in ubuntustudio corruptable caused massive data loss
Hi. I don't know but I just discovered that it wiped out most of the folders and loose files in my backup drive, too, and I'm busy trying to salvage some stuff. To reproduce: Take the Jaunty Studio daily build from 10 Jan 2009 (normal, not 64-bit) Install it on a laptop. (Desktop will not load... you will just get the base system.) Re-boot and, at the prompt, do sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install ubuntu-studio-desktop Reboot into your new unstable system. Work on it for a while, using left mouse to pull down the Ubuntu icon and access Places / Home, especially, but other partitions also. [Bug 129938] Re: gnome-sound-recordere
I assume this message was not for me, but wanted to say that gnome-recorder does work for me under intrepid studio. I have felt that this bug was filed in part by the fact that the microphone was muted by default, and part by the fact that the recording level was so very low as to be un-hear-able in many computers. This was partly to do with various alsa sound-card problems. My recording level is still, I believe, too low, but it has improved recently. [Bug 185629] [NEW] window manager crash nonload programs
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: metacity Steps to reproduce: I have Hardy Studio running on an Acer Ferrari 64, but I installed 32-bit code to run WINE applications. The error message I got when trying to load Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.0 with WINE was: Window Manager Warning: Invalid WM_TRANSIENT_FOR window 0x2e3 specified for 0x2e5 (DragonBar) (4) All programs seem to take longer to install and run. ** Affects: metacity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- window manager crash nonload programs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/185629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Hi. Before reading your post but after I filed the bug I tried Icewm with the comand: icewm --replace The bug was not corrected. I will try again right now using your instructions and kwin. I noticed one other odd thing. When I open any window, a small light-blue square with a transparent center opens up in the upper-left-hand corner. [Bug 185629] Re: window manager crash nonload programs
Re-install fixed crashes in Firefox, oddness in windows, etc. Still sometimes have odd delays, but I don't think this bug report will contribute anything that issue. The only thing re-installation didn't fix was the running program icon issue for Dragon NaturallySpeaking running with wine. The error message I got when trying to load Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.0 with WINE was: Window Manager Warning: Invalid WM_TRANSIENT_FOR window 0x2e3 specified for 0x2e5 (DragonBar) However, I did load Skype's linux version, and the running-program icon works for that. David, I have found that my bug was solveable with instructions from the following gnome bug site. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=169441 Apparently, alsamixer needs numerous tweaks to make the record work, and Ubuntu sets such tweaks to the off position by default.
