[Bug 2065582] [NEW] there is no way to disable the onscreen keyboard

2024-05-13 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

I have an XPS13 and am running Ubuntu in xorg because that is required for my
Plover stenotype program. The program uses an external keyboard.
I need the onscreen keyboard disabled, because I am using the plover keyboard
to input information, but I cannot do it, either through Settings /
Accessibility / Typing or trying various terminal entries suggested by chatgpt.
(It suggests disabling onboard, but the program was not installed, and
installing it and then disabling it did nothing.)

[Bug 1216292] [NEW] top program bar does not work with lenovo touchpad -- regression

2013-08-24 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

So I woke up this morning (24-Aug-13) and my synaptic touchpad works to move
the mouse but the buttons do not work on metacity components such as those
three little circles in the upper left, nor to re-position the box, nor the
side sliders.
Keystroke commands work fine, as does my Lenovo touch screen. But the buttons
to my synaptics touch pad seem to be non-operational.
So I blamed metacity, because it wasn't recognizing the input from my touchpad
buttons.
The problem could also, of course, be with the drivers somehow.

Funny, that little red button in the middle of my Lenovo typepad doesn't
seem to work at all, but I usually don't use it so I'm not sure if the
issues are connected.

[Bug 1206945] [NEW] workspace switcher does not work with up/down arrow commands

2013-07-31 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

I have four active workspaces.
When I hit CTL-ALT left-arrow or CTL-ALT right-arrow, the workspace switches.

[Bug 949243] [NEW] nautilus does not perform searches containing asterisks

2012-03-07 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

I open Nautilus and want to find a file, or search on a string.
Neither function works.
So for instance, I have a file called diary.org and also have other files
called diary.txt and diary.odt. I also have 30 other org files.

I open Nautilus and hit FIND.

If i type diary.org it shows me that one file.
If I type *.org I get nothing at all.
If I type diary.* I get nothing at all.

This is true even though all the files are in the same folder and at the
same level.

[Bug 877611] [NEW] evince document viewer does not close with (x) button

2011-10-18 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

The top bar of all programs has three buttons: (x) to close (-) to minimize and
(square box) to expand.
In Evince, the close button doesn't work.
I have noticed this for a while and was thinking of filing a bug against
metacity, because shouldn't that control the top bar?
But none of the other programs appear to be affected.

[Bug 818834] [NEW] gnome-control-center cannot change keyboard mapping when using toolbar menu

2011-07-31 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

I have the latest oneiric, tried to change my keyboard to dvorak.
No can do from all included taskbar menu options. Not present anywhere.
There are two keyboard menu options where it should be included, but it is not.
I ended up running gnome-control-center in a terminal.
Since I was able to install dvorak by running in terminal, this is probably not
a gnome-control-center bug, but has to do with the setup in the left-hand
taskbar.

[Bug 120569] Re: [gutsy] gtkspell segfaults when trying to set the language on gtk.TextView

2011-07-11 Thread Susan Cragin
Sadly, I can only confirm that it is fixed in oneiric, since that is what I
have now and I just checked.
But it appears to be fixed.
I did use gramps last year and had no trouble with it, so I assume it has been
fixed for some time. I'd say safe to say fixed in Natty.

[Bug 120569] Re: [gutsy] gtkspell segfaults when trying to set the language on gtk.TextView

2011-07-11 Thread Susan Cragin
I should say, I know that gramps works.
If the fix worked by removing gtk-spell, then gtk-spell could still have
problems, and I wouldn't know about them.
But I suspect it's fixed because I have other programs that use gtk-spell and
have had no problems.

[Bug 807251] Re: gdm frozen at login screen no mouse or keyboard input

2011-07-09 Thread Susan Cragin
this is especially frustrating because F2 doesn't seem to work on bootup, and I
can't get into the system at all. The boot menu never appears.
What happened to the idea of having the boot menu appear automatically in alpha
and beta versions, so we testers could always get in to recovery options?

[Bug 493396] Re: gedit plugin -- add optional code folding

This is still an issue. There is still no code folding.
This was not really a bug, and should have been transferred to the wishlist.
but code folding would be very nice as a plugin, and not that hard to achieve,
I don't think.
scite has it.

[Bug 806928] [NEW] gdm does not use alternate keyboard on login screen

2011-07-07 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

I used the Dvorak keyboard for everything, including installing Ubuntu Oneiric
Studio. It is my only keyboard option.
Now gdm has changed and given me a login with only a QUERTY option.
The login screen used to have a drop-down box where users with an alternate
keyboard could change it back from QUERTY, but now that is gone.
If the decision has been made to make that removal permanent, then the login
screen should use the keyboard that the program was installed with.

takes the network-monitor icon along with it.
I have a Lenovo tablet computer.

[Bug 736270] [NEW] on bootup battery check freezes system

2011-03-16 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

This is a regression.
As of yesterday sometime (that is, 15 March 2011) I have been unable to boot
normally into my computer.
The startup menu stalls on battery check.
This problem is not unique to my machine, since I also have an Asus G1S that is
doing the same thing.
However, both machines run 64-bit Studio and have the same kernel, same
software.
I have tried booting in both plugged and unplugged, and get the same thing.

[Bug 731361] [NEW] gnome-panel applets crash randomly on right-hand side of panel

2011-03-08 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have a Lenovo X201 tablet computer with a wacom touch screen (not
multi-touch).
After logging on, and after a period of time, the applets on the right hand
side of the screen crash. The wireless applet usually goes first, taking my
wireless connection with it. Quite often the date applet goes also. Sometimes
when I log back on, the date applet is still missing.
The problem seems to be exacerbated when I try to run a program that adds an
additional applet to the right-hand side. So, for instance, when I run Dragon
NaturallySpeaking with wine, and the microphone applet displays on the
right-hand panel.
However, this is not always the case. The applets crash also when I don't have
NatSpeak running.
I have all Natty updates as of 8-Mar-2011 9:45 EST.

[Bug 726470] [NEW] Metacity crashes about 15 seconds after boot-up and Clearlooks vanishes

2011-02-28 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

I have a Lenovo X201 tablet computer with a Wacom touch screen. I have the
Desktop theme set to Clearlooks, and use my own wallpaper picture. I have
Compiz effects disabled.
I have Ubuntu Studio Natty with all updates.
Approximately on 26-Feb-2010 there was an update that affected my Clearlooks.
Now when I boot up, my desktop shows brighter and darker colors than it should.
I wait about 15 seconds, and then Clearlooks crashes, to be replaced by a
default theme.
I think the default theme is from gdm, but I'm not sure. It has rounded edges
and does not allow me to double-click to start programs from a link on the
desktop.

[Bug 683475] Re: changing permission at multiples files

2010-12-20 Thread Susan Cragin
I think MAYBE this bug affects me.
I have natty 64 studio, installed from the 19-Dec daily build.
I tried to compile 64-bit wine from git, install and run a simple program
(notepad) but cannot. I know it is because the permissions are wrong.
I tried to install 64-bit libreoffice and run it. Installation works, but then
I can't run it unless I activate it as root, from a root terminal.
However, for me this problem developed more recently than the date this bug was
filed.

[Bug 688113] [NEW] natty studio does not load desktop after updates

2010-12-09 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have been testing Natty Studio.
Today I did all updates and re-booted.
The login screen seems as normal, but the system refuses to go beyond the login
screen.
This is true for both desktop modes, including Classic and the newer one.
SafeMode also does not work.
There seems to be no way even to get to the command line.
I re-installed, but the same thing happened.
I am unable to access logs.

[Bug 683790] [NEW] natty alpha gdm / unity does not start

2010-12-01 Thread Susan Cragin

[Bug 658376] [NEW] gnome-power-manager applet does not work and battery does not charge

2010-10-11 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

For the past week or so my (almost-new) battery has not charged at all. Before
that it was working fine.
I also miss the power-manager applet that used to appear. Now there is no
applet and I have tried turning it on by either adding it to the panel (but
it's not listed among the options) or running

doesn't work any more. The keyboard is stuck at whatever it was before,
but system/preferences/keyboard still shows ASUS-laptop.

[Bug 502142] Re: my keyboard deconfigure every time i reboot my system

2010-01-12 Thread Susan Cragin
Here's what happens to me. It's very similar but not identical.
My primary keyboard layout is the Dvorak. I used that even to install the
system.
Sometimes my husband needs to use the computer in the morning, so in system /
preferences / keyboard I set the default to USA, and close down the computer.
In the morning, my husband boots up. The keyboard preferences are still set to
USA, but the actual keyboard is Dvorak. In other words, the identities have
changed. Dvorak is now USA, and USA is now Dvorak.
But not entirely.
When I get up, I open hnb, a terminal program.
When I press the keys, the letters come out Dvorak even though the preferences
are still set to USA. But then I press CTL-S to sort, and the keys register as
USA!
The only way to straighten everything out is to re-boot with everything set to
the installation keyboard, which is Dvorak.

So basically, when the computer boots, it goes toward the installation
keyboard, and disregards the changes in preferences / keyboard. Except
for the CTL keys (and maybe ALT -- I haven't checked that.)

[Bug 493396] [NEW] gedit plugin -- add optional code folding

[Bug 400820] Re: gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu

2009-10-25 Thread Susan Cragin
I have moved to that comment, too. People tend to think of wine as running
stupid and optional games, but it's the only way for disabled people to get
speech recognition on Linux, and I refuse to give it up.
And by the way, when alsa/wine runs speech rec, it runs it very well. The speed
is great, the recognition is great, for text entry.

Another thing, pulseaudio will always be a handicap to those who use
speech rec, because of latency issues and the layer of overlap, speech
rec will never run with pulse as well as it does with alsa alone. Speech
rec is a much more complex program than any single music app, or Skype.
Those of us who need it willingly make sacrifices to use it.

[Bug 445005] [NEW] gnome desktop mishandles text information in desktop TXT files

2009-10-06 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

A very small bug...
I keep a bunch of TXT files on the desktop. Naturally, this creates icons for
those files. Well, normally, the Ubuntu desktop displays a portion of the text
inside each icon box.
It stopped doing that, just about an hour ago.
In addition, random samples of text from those same TXT files show up elsewhere
on the desktop.
Very odd.
In addition, the command Take Screenshot has stopped working, so I can't show
you what happens.

[Bug 426003] [NEW] keyboard - keys repeat multiple times

2009-09-07 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Just in the last couple of weeks, key presses have been repeating, sometimes
erratically.
Sometimes when I log on, which is a pain because then it's nearly impossible to
enter the password.
Usually the problem goes away after I've been logged on for a few minutes.

I have Karmic Studio with 2.6.31-3-rt kernel and have a couple of other
gnome problems, which are reported elsewhere. For instance, the icons on
my Main Menu have vanished, and gdm crashes quite a bit.

The crash does not happen immediately. Typically gnome-panel crashes
after about 20 minutes of use. I am usually in Firefox when it crashes

[Bug 400820] Re: gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu

2009-07-18 Thread Susan Cragin
After a check of synaptic, I have noticed that removing, and even purging
pulseaudio does not remove many of its component parts, which parts continue to
function, uselessly spinning the wheels looking for pulseaudio.
Gnome-volume-control applet is only one of them.
One of the sound apps that is called up in firefox clearly tries to grab
pulsuaudio, and starts the volume-control applet running.
In firefox, when the application says this media requires a plug-in the
suggested plug-in is likely to require pulse, because the system does not check
whether pulse is there or not.
Clearly, removing pulseaudio is tricky and requires its own page of
documentation, at the very least.
The good situation would be to have the --purge command remove ALL related
programs that grab it, like gnome-volume-control.

[Bug 317890] [NEW] deskbar-applet in ubuntustudio corruptable caused massive data loss

2009-01-16 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deskbar-applet

I have loaded Ubuntu Studio Jaunty twice in the last 4 days.
Both times, the deskbar applet misbehaved in a way that caused me to lose most
of the information on my home directory.
I clicked the ubuntu icon in the corner to access the drop-down menu, and
suddenly almost everything deleted in my home folder.
I emptied the wastebasket -- and my home folder deleted again!
Not everything deleted... a few folders with names that started with text
instead of numbers stayed. But any system-created folder, like Documents or
Pictures, came up empty.
I would say this bug is critical.

[Bug 317890] Re: deskbar-applet in ubuntustudio corruptable caused massive data loss

2009-01-16 Thread Susan Cragin
Hi. I don't know but I just discovered that it wiped out most of the
folders and loose files in my backup drive, too, and I'm busy trying to
salvage some stuff.

To reproduce:
Take the Jaunty Studio daily build from 10 Jan 2009 (normal, not 64-bit)
Install it on a laptop. (Desktop will not load... you will just get the base
system.)
Re-boot and, at the prompt, do
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-studio-desktop

Reboot into your new unstable system. Work on it for a while, using left
mouse to pull down the Ubuntu icon and access Places / Home, especially,
but other partitions also. (I have three, all of them are Ubuntu Studio
Desktop)

2008-08-04 Thread Susan Cragin
I assume this message was not for me, but wanted to say that gnome-recorder
does work for me under intrepid studio.
I have felt that this bug was filed in part by the fact that the microphone was
muted by default, and part by the fact that the recording level was so very low
as to be un-hear-able in many computers. This was partly to do with various
alsa sound-card problems.
My recording level is still, I believe, too low, but it has improved recently.
The attached file was made with capture and digital turned to 48.

[Bug 185629] [NEW] window manager crash nonload programs

2008-01-24 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Steps to reproduce:
I have Hardy Studio running on an Acer Ferrari 64, but I installed 32-bit code
to run WINE applications.
I updated to the new kernel, 24, and now I have a number of serious errors, I
believe all related to the interaction between the kernel and the window
manager.
(1) Firefox hangs often and then crashes.
(2) Openoffice writer hangs.
(3) The icons in the upper right that denote running programs do not load.
The error message I got when trying to load Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.0 with
WINE was:

[Bug 185629] Re: window manager crash nonload programs

2008-01-24 Thread Susan Cragin
I noticed one other odd thing.
When I open any window, a small light-blue square with a transparent center
opens up in the upper-left-hand corner. The square gets bigger and bigger and
then vanishes, before the window opens up.
The square always starts and ends the same size, no matter what size the
underlying window is going to be, or where it is positioned.

Have tried now icewm kwin -- both show same errors.
So I guess Metacity is not at fault

[Bug 185629] Re: window manager crash nonload programs

2008-01-24 Thread Susan Cragin
My guess is that it's an installation problem. Old X server fighting with new
kernel (because the new kernel is when the problem arose).
I'm going to try re-installing the whole system with today's installation disk,
and see what that does.

[Bug 185629] Re: window manager crash nonload programs

2008-01-24 Thread Susan Cragin
Re-install fixed crashes in Firefox, oddness in windows, etc. Still
sometimes have odd delays, but I don't think this bug report will
contribute anything that issue.

The only thing re-installation didn't fix was the running program icon issue
for Dragon NaturallySpeaking running with wine.
The error message I got when trying to load Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.0 with
WINE was:
Window Manager Warning: Invalid WM_TRANSIENT_FOR window 0x2e3 specified for
0x2e5 (DragonBar)
However, I did load Skype's linux version, and the running-program icon works
for that. The problem may be with WINE.

Perhaps you should close this bug out.

[Bug 37736] Re: Microphone bug in Ubuntu HDA_Intel

2007-10-04 Thread Susan Cragin
Don't know if a bug I recently reported may be related...
bug 148970
reported it as a bug related to that soundcard being recognized, but perhaps
the problem is more generic.

Re: [Bug 129938] Re: gnome-sound-recordere

2007-08-20 Thread Susan Cragin
I'm not sure but I think this bug is not real, I think it it caused by
the fact that Ubuntu Gutsy turns off the microphone automatically and
that it requires several steps to turn it on.

There are instruction somewhere on the Ubuntu help forum. This is sort
of a bug in that the solution is not intuitive.

[Bug 129938] Re: gnome-sound-recordere

2007-08-17 Thread Susan Cragin
David,
I have found that my bug was solveable with instructions from the following
gnome bug site.
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=169441
Apparently, alsamixer needs numerous tweaks to make the record work, and Ubuntu
sets such tweaks to the off position by default.
Good luck.
Susan
