[Bug 519847] [NEW] yelp is too slow

2010-02-10 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Yelp just is too slow to be actually usable. I have read answers that i
have searched via Google sooner than yelp starts the first time. This
means I never use it. An offline help has to me much quicker than
browsing the web and not the opposit. Epiphany start 6 times faster.

The problem is that if I set that I want to use the dead keys this
setting always gets revoked so that I cant use some special charcacters.
i have found that every Ubuntu in Germany that I have seen so far seems

[Bug 511158] [NEW] Cannot use GIMP toolbox

2010-01-22 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

Since one of the upgrades I am unable to use the toolbox of GIMP. But I
still can use the menus (Colors, etc.). Just when I use something like
the stichung tool or a brush tool nothing happens on the editing window.

I also had deleted some .gimp* directories either before or after that
effect (I forgot). But I expected GIMP to recreate them if they are not
there yet.

[Bug 507458] [NEW] F-spot exports images to GIMP with wrong PPI

2010-01-14 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

If I export from F-spot to a directory the PPI settings of the original
image (like 300 ppi) are preserved. Also when I open an image with GIMP
I get the original PPI.

* But when I open an image from F-Spot in GIMP, GIMP chooses the
settings for new images. So that for instance an 300 ppi images gets
reduced to 72 ppi!

This behaviour is dangerous for further editing process. The user will
assume that he is editing the original settings.

I don't know which programs fault it is as both can import and export
correctly when done differently.

This bug happens to me every time.

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-06-18 Thread ThiloPfennig
It does not make any sense to reopen the bug if the developers disagree.
I think the message was clear. The made a decision. If they render it
invalid we need to accept it, even if we disagree. We are free to use
another Linux. Maybe the decision is reconsidered at some point.
Personally I have disabled FUSA alltogether and now hesitate to
recommend Ubuntu. What I wish is that those design decisions are done
more carefully in the future.

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-04-18 Thread ThiloPfennig
I think this will be a CLASSIC wrong decision. It reminds me on the
decision of GNOME to choose spatial browsing for nautilus some years
ago.

Thing is: Every big change in usability does mean people will have to
relearn stuff. So this should only be done if you have very good
reasons. Mostly this is the case if some stuff REALLY sucks.

the current design decision means that I can not use the FUSA any more.
Why? Because I am used to shutdown via system menu and do not plan to
change. Also if I add the FUSA also all administration settings are gone
and I still dont know where they are now.

So to make my points:

a) People dont like changes, unless they really make things only better
b) the design decisions renders the FUSA unusable for some people like me,
although I really loved it until recently
c) Some settings are on new locations which can not be find easily
d) Additionally I think the FUSA is now overloaded and also confusing. I now
read in german (and retranslated into english Logged off and Logg off.

I think that this feature went through indicates that the community
process in Ubuntu has serious flaws, as some major concerns were not
heard. This decision alone may justify for some a switch away from
Ubuntu. What I see is arrogance. Not that Ubuntu is the only project
that has developed such arrogance, but I like to point that out in the
hope that those things will not happen again.

the major problem I guess is that the way you did incorporate the new
feature is that adding an applet changes the system menu. That sounds
very elegant but is in fact not very logical. The clean way would have
been to introduce a forked FUSA as an option and to collect user
feedback.

Personally I too still habve the window chooser on the far right which I
could not live without. But some other guys already decided before you
that I dont need that.

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-04-18 Thread ThiloPfennig
I can understand the argument, but actually I do not think it is that
confusing. In the real world and on the computer there are always more
than one way to do things. The question is what is more confusing:
Having the possibility to do a thing in another way or not being able to
do a thing because you can not find it or at least having a hard time? I
know a lot of things I can do with Ubuntu where there are dozens of ways
to do it - that does not confuse me. Confusion comes if people do not
know what to do. I think people make some tasks a habbit and then stick
to it. So I guess many users did not even yet find the FUSA.

I think the current situation is a bit unfortunate. 9.04 is on the
doorsteps and the decision was made. Even of the decision was wrong it
is better to stick with it now. But maybe it is possible to get some
more user feedback on major interface changes. And please include
feedback of impaired users. If somebody who is perfectly healthy and
fully functional and smart likes a new solution that makes a new
solution only usable for such users - unless such features are approved
by those who already have more problems with computers (which are also
kids and or seniors).

Maybe the FUSA features can be tweaked, so that it wont be impossible
for some to use Ubuntu any more (which I fear will be the case).

[Bug 356083] [NEW] rhythmbox repeatedly searches for plugins

2009-04-06 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If I import a directory again, sometimes rhythmbox does find non-music
files or files which are differently coded. It then starts to search for
plugins for these files. So far so good. The problem is that if it does
not find a plugin it does not remember that. So it would search for it
10.000 times if it finds it 10.000 times. I recommend a memory of
searches. It may make sense to search again sometimes if a new
repository was added. OTOH it should recognize that files that are not
text are not opened with rhythmbox.

Sure. The only line that contains the 3 letters gdb is this:
apt-get update; apt-get install gdb apport . Now I know what you meant - the
actual page is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace - so it does not contain the
three letter gdb - I did not look at that because I was sure it cant have
anything about gdb (otherwise it would be called differently) will try that

[Bug 258512] Re: epiphany crashes often on tab closing.

2008-08-17 Thread ThiloPfennig
The link you have doesnt tell me much on how to do it. I even installed
nemiver as a GUI but I could not find out how to save a debug log. So I
just ran strace and hope that the log I made gives some more
information.

[Bug 258512] [NEW] epiphany crashes often on tab closing.

2008-08-16 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

epiphany-browser:
  Installiert:2.22.2-0ubuntu0.8.04.5
  Mögliche Pakete:2.22.2-0ubuntu0.8.04.5
  Versions-Tabelle:
 *** 2.22.2-0ubuntu0.8.04.5 0

500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages
 2.22.1.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

Often when I close a tab in epiphany-browser the whole browser crashes. I can
then restore the session after the crash. I think this only happens on closing
non-empty tabs. (See also bug #104260 and bug #224145).

I will attach a valgrind log that I produced with G_SLICE=always-malloc
G_DEBUG=gc-friendly  valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full
--num-callers=40 --log-file=valgrind.log /usr/bin/epiphany

[Bug 258512] Re: epiphany crashes often on tab closing.

2008-08-16 Thread ThiloPfennig
No sorry, hwtas what i get in german:

Das Programm epiphany-gecko wurde unerwartet beendet

Ihr Rechner verfügt nicht über ausreichend Arbeitsspeicher, um das Problem
näher zu analysieren und einen Problembericht an die Entwickler zu senden.

The application epiphany-gecko was killed unexpectedly. You computer
does not have enough memory to analyze this problem more thoroughly and
send a problem report to the developers.

I would say a bug tool which requires a minimum RAM is quite unusable
because low RAM can be one potential cause - so I never can get to the
point tothe cause if the bug program can not analyze the situation.
