[Bug 1660573] Re: "system is booting up" while trying to log in after installing snapd on ubuntu 14.04

2017-02-01 Thread Thomas Voß
I managed to reproduce the issue without snapd being involved at all.
Marking as invalid for snapd, bumping priority to "high". Among other
things, this blocks autopkgtests for snapd on trusty.

[Bug 1650389] [NEW] Installing snapd on 14.04.5 desktop downgrades xorg et al.

2016-12-15 Thread Thomas Voß
Public bug reported:

When trying to install the latest snapd on a 14.04.5 desktop image, the
installation of systemd (as a dependency of snapd) triggers a whole
bunch of downgrades as systemd-shim is removed and replaced with
systemd.

We have to adjust the packaging such that installation of systemd does
not trigger such behavior for packages depending on systemd-shim in
trusty.

[Bug 1442105] Re: GPS not working on my BQ Ubuntu Touch

2016-09-13 Thread Thomas Voß
/usr/bin/test_gps is known to segfault and we should totally remove it.

For "Why not gpsd?": It does not support assisted GPS in the way we need
it, nor does it provide any sort of fusioning of network- and satellite-
based positioning ootb. More to this, the NMEA that is reported back
here does not report a position either, all the respective entries are
marked invalid.

Let's focus on the issue at hand.

The bug is marked as incomplete as:

(1.) we fail to reproduce it reliably
(2.) spot something meaningful in the logs that tells us what is going wrong

With that, it would be very helpful if you could provide us with the
information described in the forensics doc:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlan/location-
service#Forensics

If you are fine with switching your image to rw, the output of:

  > sudo apt install ubuntu-location-service-examples
  > sudo GLOG_v=1000 GLOG_logtostderr=1
/usr/lib/*/ubuntu-location-service/examples/client --bus system

would be very helpful.

[Bug 1604446] Re: getcurrentPosition in oxide does not cause a wake up of the GPS

2016-07-20 Thread Thomas Voß
@Mardy: Any help is welcome :) I think we want to first drop providing
the initial estimate altogether to get this bug fixed asap. We can then
go ahead and investigate whether we want to expose the last known
location to applications.

@Alan: I think it's still an estimate and we should provide that data to
applications if they want to leverage it. Point being that it is up to
them to filter/interpret the last known position in a sane way if they
explicitly request it.

[Bug 1573168] Re: [Frieza] Location service fails to start cleanly, entering restart loop

2016-05-17 Thread Thomas Voß
@Alfonso: Thanks a lot for the backtrace, I think the underlying issue
is a race on initialization, see frame #6: start thread is presented
with a null pointer. With that, I think we are seeing a race on boot and
whenever the gps first receives an NMEA sequence, trying to hand it to
upper layers of the stack, things go south with a segfault being the
ultimate consequence.

The app does not issue the ioctls, it is the service doing it (or
better: the Android GPS HAL implementation).

Re: [Bug 1468020] Re: Two GPS compatible apps conflict and loose GPS

2016-04-09 Thread Thomas Voß
Let's clarify on the terminology here first: AGPS refers to assistance
technology that
enables a GPS chipset to query relevant information
(ephemeris/almanac) over a data link (mobile data/wifi)
that offers more bandwidth than the satellite down link (~1Hz). With
that, *if* you are travelling in
situations with little satellite visibility, AGPS will be of no help,
as the GPS chipset just has no beacons
from satellites to determine which ones are visible and subsequently
triangulate a position.

I think you are referring to the network-based positioning which
estimates positions based on visible wifis and the radio cell
the phone is currently connected to. For the scenario you are
mentioning: What kind of "dark zones" did you drive through?
Did you have wifi enabled?

either. Please also attach the app-specific logs from

[Bug 1561627] Re: After days of uptime, apps do not receive position updates.

2016-03-24 Thread Thomas Voß
I'm not questioning if you are observing an issue. I'm trying to track down
the issue
as fast as possible hence why I'm asking for data to narrow down the error
condition.

I just flashed a Krillin with latest rc-proposed and will use it over
the next couple of days.

 * Do you happen to remember how many days of uptime we are talking about?
 * Did you have the phone in active use? Did the battery level ever become
critically low?

Which device/image version are you using?

If you have a device in an error state, would you mind attaching to the
location service with gdb and producing a backtrace to help in
debugging? See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/location-
service/+bug/1468020/comments/4 for instructions.

[Bug 1468020] Re: Two GPS compatible apps conflict and loose GPS

2016-03-24 Thread Thomas Voß
Some background first: Applications do not compete or have control over
the GPS at all. Location service is handling all of the access. With
that, an app is not able to block or exclusively own the GPS. There are
multiple other reasons why the apps could appear to not receive any
updates, though. That being said: We have problems reproducing the bug
on latest rc-proposed images. If someone is able to reproduce, it would
be really helpful if we could get gdb backtraces of both apps and the
location service. Please see:

  http://dirac.org/linux/gdb/06-Debugging_A_Running_Process.php

for a good overview of how to attach to a running process. Once
attached, you should enter "t a a bt full" in gdb, and pastebin the
trace(s). Please note that you need to execute gdb with elevated
privileges (sudo) to be able to attach.

Also note that we do not put the GPS in an explicit battery saving mode
when the phone is in deep sleep. It is the overall system state that
implies maximum battery saving.

[Bug 1554604] Re: get a GPS fix before the human has to wait for the phone

2016-03-15 Thread Thomas Voß
Disagreed, instead of randomly polling for a location fix we should make
sure that a location fix can be obtained fast enough. In addition, if we
start polling, we would have to do so all of the time. A single shot
estimate is not good enough as we cannot reliably determine whether the
device is moving or not.

2016-01-11 Thread Thomas Voß
The NearBy scopes falls back to geo-ip based position estimates and
caches last known positions. So even if the system-wide positioning
engine is off, the scope is still able to do whatever it wants in terms
of calling into remote geoip services or rely on cached position
estimates. There is hardly anything we can do about it.

[Bug 1500039] Re: Ubuntu Phone is not getting a mobile network cell triangulation position

2015-12-11 Thread Thomas Voß
We are only relying on the currently connected to radio-cell to estimate
a position and it can take up to 20 seconds until a first position
estimate from the network is obtained. The likely difference with
android for example is that we do not hand information about neighboring
radio cells to the network-based positioning provider.

Also note that applications have no way of forcing the system to use
this information (on purpose). The location infrastructure will make
sure that all required providers to achieve a fast and accurate fix are
powered on whenever an application requests position updates.

I will come up with actual measurements of the time it takes to obtain a
position estimate after updates have been enabled.

Thanks for the graphs. One thing that stands out is the time that the
system stays active when occasionally waking up from deep sleep (right
hand side of the graph).
Do you have the raw data producing those graphs handy?

Thanks,

[Bug 1481240] Re: Can't get correct location information before use other GPS apps

2015-12-01 Thread Thomas Voß
I'm not convinced that location-service is causing issues here. We do
not switch on positioning unless someone explicitly asks us to do so. In
that case, it will take ~30 seconds until network-based positioning
kicks in and likely another 2 - 3 minutes until the GPS hands us a
position. With that, we are likely seeing a race on startup here.

For Pete's statement: The location service deals in numeric values on
purpose. Geocoding and reverse geocoding is consciously left out and we
assume other layers of the system to do a better job of the
encoding/decoding task (we also want to avoid calling "home" to a geoip
service from a central system service).

[Bug 1442105] Re: GPS not working on my BQ Ubuntu Touch

2015-11-30 Thread Thomas Voß
@oeckels: When you say you flashed your phone with Android and got a GPS
fix within 3 minutes, how did you make sure that the GPS chipset is not
using any sort of assistance information? Even if you disable network-
based positioning,t he GPS chipset will rely on a so-called SUPL server
to download ephimeris data. For that, I'm curious what steps you did
take on Android.

At any rate, to further debug your issue, it would be very helpful if
you could include the logs and debug info listed in:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlan/location-
service#Forensics

2015-11-23 Thread Thomas Voß
Quick update on silo 26: I'm rebuilding location-service to account
for a recent landing.
The one blocking issue is mediascanner2, which requires a rebuild,
too. It is however enabled for dual-landing
to both vivid and xenial, and we cannot easily do a vivid+o landing
with it right now. I'm working on the resolving that issue,
but it will likely take a day or two to complete.

[Bug 1462664] Re: [Ubuntu Phone] With WIFI = ON the GPS stops

2015-11-09 Thread Thomas Voß
@Tony: The client is the app, which is potentially sigstop'd by our
lifecycle. The dbus daemon does not detect the app being sigstop'd and
we might end up trying to call into a stopped app, waiting for a
response (for too long).

The WIFI tie-in is removed by the MP attached to this bug, we will move
reporting infrastructure to an external component soon'ish anyway.

[Bug 1514329] [NEW] Applications should be able to setup and subscribe to geo fence events

2015-11-09 Thread Thomas Voß
Public bug reported:

Right now, applications are not able to specify that they would like to
be notified whenever either:

(1.) The location of the device significantly changes.
(2.) The device enters a pre-defined geo rectangle.

Enabling such use-cases would allow for power-efficient implementations
of common positioning use-cases.

[Bug 1462664] Re: [Ubuntu Phone] With WIFI = ON the GPS stops

2015-10-24 Thread Thomas Voß
We have got fixes staged in silo 10 (see https://requests.ci-
train.ubuntu.com/#/ticket/559). Before hnading over to QA, we would
greatly appreciate feedback from people who contributed to this bug. If
you want to give the fixes a spin, please install the silo by:

[1.] Enable developer mode on your phone, unlock and connect to your machine
via USB.
[2.] Install the silo tools with: sudo apt-get install phablet-tools-citrain
  [3.] Deploy to device via: citrain device-upgrade 10 ${YOUR_DEVICE_PASSWORD}

Please note that the procedure makes your image on the phone writable,
so you should know what you are doing :)

[Bug 1462664] Re: [Ubuntu Phone] With WIFI = ON the GPS stops

2015-10-22 Thread Thomas Voß
I managed to reproduce the issue with a non-responding client. The
service *should* not wait for the client to answer to position updates,
but we apparently do. For that, I attached a branch that tackles the
issue by asynchronously handling (lack of) responses.

[Bug 1507474] [NEW] Provide geo-fencing functionality

2015-10-19 Thread Thomas Voß
Public bug reported:

The location infrastructure should offer a way for applications to setup
and maintain geo-fences (see [1]).

As usual, the respective functionality should be guarded by app confinement and
require the user to approve the
respective transaction via our trust infrastructure. In addition, the location
infrastructure should be clever in filtering
out requests that would enable an app to escape its lifecycle boundaries.

For that, the following changes would be required throughout the stack:

[1.] Geo-fencing capabilities of h/w should be exposed via the platform-
api HW interfaces: See
http://androidxref.com/5.1.1_r6/xref/hardware/libhardware/include/hardware/gps.h#1014

[2.] The location-service should expose geo-fencing capabilities on the
location::Service::Session objects.

[3.] The platform-api should expose an app-facing itf modelling geo-
fencing functionality.

[4.] qtubuntu-sensors should provide an implementation of
http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qgeoareamonitorsource.html

loading/announcement of providers ready for consumption is executed on a

[Bug 1503844] Re: ubuntu-location-serviced crashed with SIGSEGV in com::ubuntu::location::providers::gps::android::HardwareAbstractionLayer::Impl::Impl()

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Voß
Caused by a race with the android container/the underlying gps chipset
driver. We have been experiencing the issue on and off for the last
months. The location-service or the GPS provider implementation can
hardly do anything about the underlying issue, so I'm removing location-
service from being affected. Instead, we should start tracking down the
issue in the context of platform-api/libhybris.

[Bug 1500539] Re: Ubuntu Phone: GPS is returning 3 positions at the same time

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Voß
Verified that location-service is not the culprit here with:

> sudo apt-get install ubuntu-location-service-examples
> /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/ubuntu-location-service/examples/client --bus
> system

Updates are reported correctly.

[Bug 1492783] Re: GPS does not work on my Bq E5

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Voß
A few things to note:
[1.] SensorStatus app is not able to determine whether a location was obtained
by the GPS or by a network-based positioning method.
[2.] The missing espoo.log indicates that the Nokia Here provider carrying out
network-based positioning is not installed/activated.
[3.] The following lines in the ERROR log:

  E0904 10:17:10.653188 3704
android_hardware_abstraction_layer.cpp:157] Error downloading GPS Xtra
data: Timeout was reached: Operation timed out after 1499 milliseconds
with 84941 out of 276480 bytes received

Indicate an issue with the current data connection. The gps chipset
driver is trying to download an assistance file for speeding up GPS-
based fixes. It fails to do so and with that, the chipset falls back to
a cold-start scenario, with the gps querying ephimeris and almanac
information from satellites. The respective download can take a long
time (usually ~20 minutes) but depends on satellite visibility and on
the phone not being suspended obviously.

Could you please paste the output of "ps -ef | grep location" to
complete the debug information?

[Bug 1488795] Re: Still getting cached last location even if the permission is denied in system settings after the application started

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Voß
Permissions to access the service are only checked whenever an app
establishes a connection to the location service. In fact, the trust
store should inform the service that permissions have changed, and the
service should react accordingly. I will mark trust-store as affected,
too.
