[Bug 1048100] [NEW] Shotwell reports that images are unable to be imported due to a hardware issue erroneously

2012-09-08 Thread Tom Wright
Public bug reported:

When attempting to import images from a SD card, Shotwell reported that
the images could not be imported due to a hardware issue, when, in fact,
there was no hardware issue; it was just unable to write to the photos
folder. In this case, a correct, and preferably helpful error message
should be shown.

@cyrildz but would a better solution not simply to be to preview the
audio file on clicking a play button displayed on the icon? That way it
is still easy to access but less likely to be triggered accidentally.

[Bug 695069] [NEW] gnome-doc-tool crashes when converting .page files

2010-12-28 Thread Tom Wright
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-doc-utils

I have recently been attempting to export the documentation (created using
Mallard) of a project on which I have been working to html using
gnome-doc-utils but gnome-doc-tools consistently fails to convert the .page
files, producing the following error:
gnome-doc-tool: 1: Bad substitution
and others leading from it.

This is due to gnome-doc-tool's urlencode and urldecode function making
use of a feature specific to the bash shell (c=${arg:$i:1}) to select a
character from a string whereas the script's shell is specified as
/bin/sh. I have attached a patch which replaces all instances of this by
using the standard Unix cut utility which should completely fix this
issue.

2009-07-28 Thread Tom Wright
I think that now it is time to stop looking at synonyms and accept that

[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is

2009-07-06 Thread Tom Wright
I agree, a package sounds much more like an archive than what is
essential (from a new users perspective) an installer. On the other hand
package is established with more knowlegable users as is (to a lesser
extent) archive so unless we can think of a name which is actually
unambiguously better wouldn't looking at the workflow for common uses of
archives be better (e.g. offering to combine files on upload or
similar).

[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is

2009-06-29 Thread Tom Wright
I think that moving away from the term archive is a great idea as whilst
in the past people may have used archiving to store old files these days
it is mainly used for email attachments and similar. I think that we
should definetly include an imperitive verb such as create as it gives
users a clear idea about what the menu item actually does (creates a
file not changes the folder compression as the same menu icon would in
XP). Create compressed file... is best as it gives users maximum
knowledge about the action. We should also look at changing zip to the
default archive format as people who care about compression enough to
use tar.gz or tar.bz2 rather than simply wanting to email files to a
friend with windows will know about it (I will submit a bug report
depending on the responce from this).

[Bug 237975] Re: Mousing over an audio file on the desktop should not preview it.

2009-06-27 Thread Tom Wright
Would a better solution be to look at the underlying UI (or lack
thereof) functionality behind audio preview ranther than just
selectively disabling it? The upstream bug here discusses it:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=533153 - I think that a play
button on the icons dispayed on hover sounds best.

[Bug 318855] [NEW] more useful tooltips for workspace switcher needed

2009-01-19 Thread Tom Wright
Public bug reported:

When a new user hovers over the workspace switcher they should be
presented with something helpful, not just the prompt 'click to start
dragging ...' or the workspace name; users should not need to care which
number workspace it is and drag and drop of windows between workspaces
is not supported in compiz anyway.

This functionality was already present in some of the earlier hardy
alphas but was removed for some reason in later alphas (it may have been
in 2.19.4-0ubuntu1 but the version no. and time of release does not make
much sense). Apparently the work was done by MacSlow, more info and an
out of date patch exists here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Meeting/2008-02-07?highlight=(pager).
A uptodate image is available here:
http://people.ubuntu.com/~mmueller/tooltips.png. All of the patches and
diffs needed to implement it should be here:
