[Bug 2047423] [NEW] [Regression] RTL is malfunctioning in 3.24.39

2023-12-26 Thread Yaron
Public bug reported:

GNOME Foundation and the GTK authors published a GTK version that has some
issues with displaying RTL correctly as discovered by Yossef Or Boczko:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/6296

We just need to make sure this version is not packaged by Ubuntu as it
will break all RTL apps (Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, etc.) using this
version of GTK.

There should be a fixed version soon.

[Bug 389428] Re: Stop importing RTL translations for CLI apps into Ubuntu

2023-09-03 Thread Yaron
We are translating CLI apps nowadays, most modern terminal emulators can handle
RTL quite well, there is still some work to do outside the graphical
environment but overall it's pretty safe to do so.
We can mark this one as won't fix, thanks.

Thank you Marco!
Your effort is very important to a large community of RTL Ubuntu users.

This is definitely bringing us one step closer to improving the overall
usage experience for those crazy languages speakers :)

enforce this decision for all the other RTL languages (I'm guessing
Arabic, Persian and Urdu mainly).

[Bug 1872716] Re: Evince crashes when trying to open djvu

2020-04-14 Thread Yaron Artzi
Update #2: I don't know if this will be helpful information, but I managed to
open DJVU files with djview4 after setting the environment variable:
LIBDJVU_DISABLE_MMX=1 in /etc/environment.
This is apparently due to an issue in the package DjVuLibre. From what I
checked, this doesn't help with the issue in evince.

[Bug 1872716] [NEW] Evince crashes when trying to open djvu

2020-04-14 Thread Yaron Artzi
Public bug reported:

I tried to open a djvu file with evince. Instead of opening, the evince
window shows for less than a second, and then it crashes.

The djvu file is fine and opens well with evince 3.18.2 on ubuntu 16.04.
When I try to open the file through the terminal (with 'evince
') I get the output:
"Segmentation fault (core dumped)".

[Bug 1323567] [NEW] Changing password does not change ecryptfs password

2014-05-27 Thread Yaron Sheffer
Public bug reported:

I changed my own password on the Gnome User Accounts applet. After
reboot, I could not access my home directory. It turns out the ecryptfs
passphrase was still wrapped with the *old* password.

Workaround: in single user mode, I used ecryptfs command to rewrap the
passphrase.

[Bug 263822]

2010-04-07 Thread Yaron
Another solution I heard was:
Patching the code so Hebrew, Arabic and Persian won't compile for CLI only
apps
The problem begins when we want a translation for a hybrid app that has both
GUI and CLI

In Hebrew most of the hybrid apps are translated correctly besides the
strings that appear on both CLI and GUI
wget for example shouldn't be translated to any semitic language at all
because it only has CLI, adding a small patch to the Ubuntu code repository
will ignore the Hebrew/Arabic/Persian translation during the compilation
process, this is not the best suggestion if we still insist on using mlterm

The deal with mlterm is that I personally think it should be included by
default uppon the installation of any RTL language but I think it would be a
waste of time not to include the non-gregorian calendar, @Usama - this is
negotiablt of course but we should really think if we want to go through all
this twice...

mlterm is great, not doubt but the fact that it is not versatile enough
(like gnome-terminal with vte) makes it a little hard to use, if the mlterm
developer wants some money for improving this app maybe we should all try
and raise funds but if it's not about money I guess we have a problem...

I would love to hear your comments and I hope I didn't repeat anything said
earlier in the discussion

Kind regards,
Yaron Shahrabani

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2010-04-02 Thread Yaron
OK Usama, sounds good!

About mlterm as default in installation, maybe we should work on that
non-gregorian app as well because adding 2 features as default for RTL will
require twice the work
Adding them both at one shot will be more efficient

Maybe we should consider a further development of mlterm so it would be
a little more gnome-terminal compliant (I'm talking about graphical
interface), its only a technical work so maybe we can get some support
from Canonical or GNOME for that cause

Any other ideas?

[Bug 263822]

2010-04-01 Thread Yaron
I know all about mlterm, In Debian for example Lior Kaplan added mlterm as
default when the Hebrew language is installed
Same as for the Hebrew calendar
I guess mlsterm should be also installed in Ubuntu for Hebrew, Arabic and
Persian as default

I also think there should be region specific settings such as if I select my
location to Jerusalem the settings of the calendar should act accordingly
(In Israel the rest days are Friday which is a half workday and Shabbat
which is a full nonworking day)

As far as I remember, the last time I installed Evolution I had to set it
manually

What other specific settings and apps are included in the Muslim Edition of
Ubuntu?
(Besides praying time apps and Quran specific apps, Hijra calendar would be
appropriate I guess, maybe even plan a special calendar app that will
support all the special calendar forms who are not Gregorian so it will take
less space and will require less specific apps)

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2010-03-31 Thread Yaron
No, we don't have to open a bug for each app that uses vte but the solution
with the 'C' locale does not apply to dpkg since you shouldn't launch any apps
from there...
There are rare situations when apps launch graphical screens, very rare...

So the solution for the dpkg app is relatively easier than the one
suggested here (the problem is that each program launched through
Terminal will have the 'C' locale while in dpkg it doesn't really
matter)

Agreed?

I see where you are going but I can't understand why have you marked the

problem...

Re: [Bug 243769] Re: Hebrew text is broken on gtk text messeges

2008-08-13 Thread Yaron
There's a screenshot at the Israeli forum,
Actually although its fixed we came to a conclusion that since its an LTS
version there should be a fix anyway...

So showing a picture of the dialogs working fine wont help to fix the
problem, some of us who are not willing to upgrade will still suffer from
lack of support in GTK which is pretty much disappointing...

If a screenshot is still necessary I shall provide it anyway...
Best regards,
Yaron

These screenshots were taken by Mark (thanks!)

And although its fixed in Intrepid it should be fixed in the current version
(again the LTS issue)

According to the messaging at the forum I must add the following:
This is not a GNOME related bug, it also happens in KDE
And according to a further investigation by some guys at the forum this bug
does not occur on KDE installed over Mandriva or Arch

Hope to see this bug fixed soon...

[Bug 239899] Re: Black arrows in yelp are backwards (Hebrew Locale)

2008-08-09 Thread Yaron
Well this bug is really an easy one
My suggestion is to include the name of the pictures in the translation
I mean that if its an HTML page all you should do is add the img src= tag
into the gettext element and add an -he suffix to the flipped images attached
to this HTML
(there should be 2 versions - the arrow.png pointing to the right and
arrow-he.png pointing to the left - and of course an ability to control the
filename that will be used to display the arrow according to the language)

Actually, Inkscape have done that before
That's the reason why I never completed the translation so far... (Ive got more
9 records to go but its too complicated to translate an SVG file into Hebrew)

[Bug 243769] Re: Hebrew is cut in GNOME messages

2008-06-30 Thread Yaron
Intrepid is in alpha phase currently meaning that we wont be able to use
the fixed version until October this year...

I hope it will be fixed prior to the release date of intrepid so we can
use it with the upcoming 8.04.1 release...

Anyways if its fixed already it shouldnt be a problem to adapt the changes from
the upcoming major release to the upcoming minor release...
Im tracking the issue on a regular basis...

[Bug 243769] Re: Hebrew is cut in GNOME messages

2008-06-29 Thread Yaron
Im sorry for all the mistaked these guys are making...

Anyways, I would like to provide some description about the discussed
issue

The problem is that in some of the dialogs the text is plained cut and
all you can see is just the left part of it (changes from dialog to
another)

Although this bug is GNOME related, ive also experienced the same problem with
KDE while using the KDE control panel
The text to the right appears partially, same as the issue described above
related to GNOME

Despite this report, there has been some efforts made to correct the
problem decribed above the problem is that they are fixed in Intrepid
but still appear in Hardy...

I would love to hear some coments about the issue
Best regards,
Yaron

[Bug 139936] Evolution calendar shifts one hour backwards after going back from DST

2007-09-16 Thread Yaron Tausky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This night we went back from DST to normal time (in the Israeli time
zone, which is generally GMT+2). Everything worked properly and
automatically except the Evolution calendar, which shifted all my
appointments one hour earlier. Once I went to Edit Preferences
Calendar and Tasks and toggled Adjust for daylight saving time TWICE
(at first it was checked, then I unchecked it, and then checked it
again), everything went back to normal.

[Bug 112358] Hebrew bookmarks are not displayed

2007-05-04 Thread Yaron Tausky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

I'm using Epiphany with an English locale, and I have bookmarks with both
English and Hebrew titles. While the ones with the English titles are displayed
properly in the bookmarks menu, the ones with the Hebrew titles appear as empty
menu items (except for the favicon, for websites that have one). When using a
Hebrew locale I get the opposite problem: Hebrew bookmarks are displayed, and
English ones aren't.
This is a regression from previous versions, in which the bookmarks behaved
properly.
