[Bug 616763] Re: Launching alternate Window Manager changes default Window Manager with no option to reset
Hi, While attempting to reproduce this problem for someone else at ubuntuforums.org, I found myself stuck with the same problem too in Ubuntu 10.10. While in a Ubuntu Desktop session metacity --replace and sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager did not help at all. The results were always the same, Ubuntu Desktop session always had the e16 window manager running instead of metacity. Ever since trying out an e16-gnome session, I was also having trouble with indicator-appmenu from my Ubuntu Netbook session which was covering my main menus in my Ubuntu Desktop session. We both had ubuntu-desktop, ubuntu-netbook and e16 desktops installed. I offered the e16 removal advice as follows, which works well for me. Remove e16 and its dependencies: $ sudo apt-get remove e16 $ sudo apt-get autoremove Now if you don't have any window borders, try this: $ sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager (choose metacity) Now restart, or log out and log back in. ---Part 2--- If you still don't have any window borders for your applications, try this: $ metacity --replace Your window borders should appear correctly now. If that works, go to System Preferences Startup Applications and create a new entry for metacity --replace. Name = Metacity Command = metacity --replace Now restart your computer and see if that Startup Application entry works. This will be only a temporary solution. ---Part 3--- IF (only if), you have a problem with indicator-appmenu like I am (it is like a global menu) automatically appearing on your panel of your Ubuntu Desktop session, and covering your menus, try this: $ sudo apt-get remove indicator-appmenu $ sudo apt-get autoremove Now restart, or log out and log in and the appmenu problem should be gone. This solution works well for me, and I have successfully restarted a 'normal' Ubuntu Desktop session about 10 times already. [Bug 574241] [NEW] cdrom randomly fails to mount in Lucid
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gvfs My data discs randomly don't mount. A reboot seems to help, but not always. Eject also doesn't work correctly (it snaps shut immediately after opening after burning). Recently K3B reported that my cdrom could not be unmounted. I tried replacing my cd drive from a new drive from another computer, but it didn't help so I continue to use the original. I'm currently using Kubuntu Lucid, but I can confirm this occurs with Ubuntu Lucid. I purchased a USB external cd burner as a temporary solution and it appears to be uneffected by any symptom, so this might only apply to internal cd drives. Another interesting problem is that I can run the command 'sudo lshw' only one time, because it fails to collect any data the second time. 'sudo lshw' will work again after a reboot. [Bug 543214] [NEW] Creating a New Panel in Gnome requires me to log out
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Hello, If I right click on the gnome panel and select New Panel, the new panel will not appear until I log out and log back in. [Bug 499754] Re: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)
Hi Antti Kaihola, This is a clean install of Lucid Alpha 1 (i386) with no updates applied (I'm avoiding a partial upgrade) but with some various applications installed. All directory files do end in the .directory extension. However, you have helped me find the problem. None of the applications (except for the ones I have added entries for) have the *.desktop extension in the folder ~/.local/share/applications . $$$ ls /home/james/.local/share/applications alacarte-made-1.desktop alacarte-made.desktop brasero cgmail defaults.list empathy evolution evolution-mail firefox foobillard f-spot gcalctool gimp gnome-search-tool Google-googleearth.desktop lastfm mimeapps.list mimeinfo.cache miro openoffice.org-draw sun-java6-javaws thunderbird Track Mania Nations For Ever.desktop transmission tsclient ubuntuone-client-applet userapp-sh-UTV15U.desktop vinagre wine wine-browsedrive wine-extension-chm.desktop wine-extension-gbx.desktop wine-extension-hlp.desktop wine-extension-htm.desktop wine-extension-html.desktop wine-extension-ini.desktop wine-extension-rtf.desktop wine-extension-txt.desktop wine-extension-wri.desktop wine-extension-xml.desktop xsane Changing the ' firefox ' file to ' firefox.desktop ' allows me to change the property values of firefox in alacarte. On the other hand, every file in the /usr/share/applications folder does have a *.desktop extension. Whatever it is that is responsible for creating *.desktop extensions is failing to do so during ubuntu installation, and while using apt-get. I used command line apt-get to install my favorite applications from the ubuntu repositories. I have a few applications listed there that I have installed using another method... sh GoogleEarthLinux.run for example. So it looks like I will have to rename each file (application entry) in the ls /home/james/.local/share/applications directory to .desktop if I want to edit them in alacarte. [Bug 499754] Re: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)
I managed to fix it. I downloaded a new alacarte source package and compiled the source code myself. I can now edit any menu entry in alacarte. If anyone needs to fix alacarte in Ubuntu Lucid (alpha 1) (gnome- desktop), because you are unable to edit the entries in the gnome menu, see below. I got alacarte from gnome 2.29.4 - alacarte version 0.12.4 found here: http://www.icewalkers.com/download/GNOME/1075/dld/ I think the dependencies were intltool and libgnome-menu-dev (when you run ./configure it will tell you) ./configure make sudo make install you might need to reboot the system, if not log out and back in again. Also, I was advised that *.desktop files are not present in the ~/.local/share/applications folder by default, so I am mistaken about that part in my earlier post. Probable Bug Solution: I think alacarte needs to be recompiled for i386 desktop (Lucid alpha 1) before alpha 2 is released.
