[Bug 2042823] Re: Login blank background (gray) after update

2023-11-06 Thread Brent C
Indeed when I unplug the TV HDMI, the login screen appears. Additionally
(awesome :D) my HDMI audio is also working with this update!

I'll track the bug you mentioned but at least I have this workaround.

Indeed I have my TV plugged in as well (even though it is not turned on)
via HDMI. That sounds like a plausible bug indeed. I'll try
disconnecting the TV and rebooting.

[Bug 2023322]

2023-09-22 Thread Mcatanzaro-c
(In reply to Thomas Zajic from comment #56)
> Is this the same bug that is being discussed here?

No, because the problem here is specific to GTK 4 and has been around
for years. That is, since you didn't have this problem with 2.40, this
bug is not your bug.

You're probably hitting either bug #259644 or bug #261874, depending on
whether or not you see those KMS DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB error
messages. Please confirm.

[Bug 2025662] [NEW] mutter pauses for multiple seconds at random times

2023-07-03 Thread Ryan C. Underwood
Public bug reported:

Hi, I have this weird bug in mutter (44.2-0ubuntu1) which seems to
correlate with uptime - if I kill mutter the problem seems to go away
for a few days, although killing mutter is very inconvenient because all
applications are also killed even with session persistence.

Upon strace analysis it can be seen that when the pauses are happening
there is a specific trace involving GEM operations happening immediately
after a ~1 second epoll expires.

During this state the entire UI is paused - video does not update, mouse
cursor does not move, keypresses have no response. However, input
events are "queued" so that when the pause ends, the mouse instantly
warps across the screen, and if a key was down at the time the pause
began, the key is repeated hundreds of times since it seems that the
key-up event is only processed when the "pause" ends.

The system is up to date 23.04 and mutter is using the Intel HD 530
integrated graphics. I do not believe this issue happened before 23.04
was released, although it has been intermittent and persistent since
that time.

Attached a strace with timestamps which provides an example of a multi-
second pause. Using grep -A1 epoll_wait you can see the instances of
the GEM operations during the pause. Eventually at around 09:40:57
local time in the trace the "pause" ended.

Example of an instance of the GEM operation trace after a ~1 second
epoll timeout:

[pid 686436] 09:40:54.750468 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLOUT}], 1, 5) = 1 ([{fd=3,

[pid 686436] 09:40:55.424218 writev(45,

[pid 686436] 09:40:55.424471 writev(45,

[pid 686436] 09:40:55.424810 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLOUT}], 1, 5) = 1 ([{fd=3,
revents=POLLOUT}])
[pid 686436] 09:40:55.425150 epoll_wait(8, [], 256, 0) = 0

These pauses are often 10-15 seconds in length but can also be much
longer. I have observed it happening even with the screen locked
(screen lock unresponsive until pause ends).

FD 8 in the trace is anon_inode:[eventpoll] and FD 11 is
/dev/dri/renderD129, the Intel HD 530 DRI device.

Kernel is 6.2.0-24-generic from the distribution.

[Bug 2022977] [NEW] unable to install ntp support

2023-06-05 Thread Cliffard C. Pankonien
Public bug reported:

When trying to set pc to "keep synchronized with internet servers",
error message pops up that "ntp support not installed" with a button to
"install ntp support". When clicked, a notification pops up that "an app
is requesting additional packages" that has a button "find in software".
When clicked, a box pops up that says "unable to find the ntp you were
searching for. Please see the documentation for more information". That
link leads to generic information about repositories.

[Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1

2022-10-13 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Xubuntu 22.04.1 after upgrading from 20.04

In order to get multiple Windows 10 systems to "discover" the samba
shares on two different Xubuntu systems, I had to re-enable SMB1
protocol on all the Windows systems. Microsoft apparently keeps
disabling this on system updates.

As reported above, old Windows mapped drive assignments made to Ubuntu
samba shares have continued to work over time, but new shares cannot be
seen unless SMB1 is enabled. of course, this should all just work using
newer secure protocols.

For a significant piece of server software, the fact that this hasn't
been addressed long ago is a real mystery.

Dear Mr. Bacher,

I am a linux novice. You responded to a bug report I made in Oct
20, 2020. On February 26, 2021 there was a updated report posted here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seahorse/+bug/1900347

So has this bug been fixed? If so were would the fixed package be? If
not when and how do bugs like this get resolved?

Thanks,

Hi Thomas;

Hope you are well and life is being kind.

Forgive the late reply but have been busy with work. So at this point I
have tried these Burn Programs

Brasero
Imgburn
K3b
Brasero

All give back a similar message. I am going to on Boot try a earlier
version of Ubuntu or maybe Safe mode to see if that would be a solution. It
is really difficult to tell wether this is a OS or Hardware issue.

Thank you very much for trying to assist me. Best Regards

Ollo;

sorry to take so long to get back to you but I have ran the cd-r test.

*Do you experience the problem with CD-R or CD-RW media ?*

Yes. The exact same error message as when I tried to make a DVD.

*Does it help to blank the CD medium before using it with Brasero:
xorriso -outdev /dev/sr0 -blank as_needed*

Unfortunately No. Tried twice and the same error Message.

Did the Power off/on Cycle and that also had no effect.

Thanks for your help and hoping that some solution comes up.

Thanks for getting back to me. So a question to ask

*Brasero's bad read attempt spoiled the two ASUS drives until they got a
power-off-on cycle. If the drive is built into the computer this means a
power-off-on cycle of the computer, i fear*

What does doing a power off/on cycle entail ??? Disconnecting the Drive and
computer from power and replugging it in or something more complex ??

Hi Thomas;

Thank you very much for getting back to me. So will try to answer your
questions. Some of which may be delayed due to me having to run test.

*- What is the vendor, model, revision of your drive. You may obtain it
from the empty drive by*

xorriso : NOTE : Disc status unsuitable for writing
Drive current: -outdev '/dev/sr0'
Media current: is not recognizable
Media status : is not present
Drive type : vendor 'ASUS' product 'BW-16D1HT' revision '3.10'

*- Do you experience the problem with CD-R or CD-RW media ? If so:*

* - What happens if you use a writable DVD medium instead ?*

* - Does it help to blank the CD medium before using it with Brasero:*
*   xorriso -outdev /dev/sr0 -blank as_needed*

Will Run these test shortly and get back to you with the results

*- Do you experience the problem with other GUI programs like K3B or
Xfburn ? - Do you experience the problem with a run of xorriso ?
ISO="...path.to.your.iso.image.file..." xorriso -as cdrecord -v
dev=/dev/sr0 blank=as_needed "$ISO"*

Have not tried K3B or Xfburn. Did try Nero for Linux and had the same
result as I did with Brasero.

Thank you very much for the assistance. Talk shortly.

[Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1

2021-04-28 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Regarding my previous comment, disregard the issue about Windows 10
having problems accessing the Samba shares. This turned out to be a
strange password problem with samba. Resetting the user's password to
the same value that it already was immediately cleared the issue and all
windows machines could once again see the shares.

[Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1

2021-04-28 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Just to add another voice to the crowd, I'm on Xubuntu 20.04 and I just
ran across this problem myself.

I am using the Nemo file browser, but the same thing occurs with
Nautilus and Thunar. I didn't notice the problem for a long while
because I had three legacy Windows machines on the network (all running
Windows 10 at this point) and had made file browser bookmarks to the
important shares long ago. These bookmarks have continued to work to
this day without issue. I got a new Windows 10 machine a few weeks ago
and was having the problem everyone reports of not being able to connect
("Failed to retrieve share list from server") on the new machine, even
though all the existing bookmarks were still functioning file. All of
the Windows 10 machines were able to see one another without problem.

Then I ran across this thread and tried Bloodyiron's suggestion of
killing the gvfsd-smb-browse process. Immediately I was able to connect
to the new machine using Nemo. I quickly created some needed bookmarks
to the important shares and now I can communicate using the file browser
and expect the new bookmarks to be as reliable as the others. So I
would suggest this bookmark method to others as a workaround.

This supports Craig W's comment about the difference between discovery
and browsing. When I run "smbclient -L // -U ", it
reports all of the shares on the target, whether Windows or Linux, with
the closing message: "SMB1 disabled -- no workgroup available" as
expected.

Unfortunately, this is only a one-way solution. All of the legacy
Windows 10 machines can see and access the Samba shares on the Xubuntu
box, but I haven't yet figured out a way to get the new Windows machine
to access these same shares, with or without gvfsd-smb-browse running.
Every connection attempt is rejected and I haven't found useful messages
in the logs. If I figure out a solution, I'll post here, and I'm open
to suggestions.

I agree with the general sentiment that for a service as important as
this, there isn't any real excuse for this thing dragging out for two
years as it has.

[Bug 1918190] Re: Enabling/Disabling VPN crashes window manager

2021-03-08 Thread Robert C Jennings
As a workaround for anyone, you can use nmcli to bring up a VPN
connection.

Run `nmcli c` to get a list of connections, once you have the name you
can enable it with `nmcli c up $name` or disable it with `nmcli c down
$name`.

I hope this is not too contorted. I tried 3 keys, a RSA 2048
key created in 2012, a DSA 1024 key created in 2007, and a RSA 2048 key
created in 2019. The "Import Key" menu option in Seahorse wont import
either a binary nor an armored (asc) version for any of these keys. For either
key version of any key an error message pops up "The information in this key
has not yet been verified" and underneath the message are the details of the
key. In the upper right corner "Import" appears and clicking on it does
nothing. The key is not imported.

In the file manager window a double click of the asc version of the key
or using the menu choice "Open with Import Key" will import the key. A
message apperars "the key blaa blaa has been imported". And infact it
has. With the binary version of the key "keyfile.pgp" nothing works, no
error message no nothing. This binary version can be imported using a
terminal. As was noted in the other bug report, the sucessfully added
keys are only listed after Seahorse is stopped and restarted.

And finally Seahorse menu option "Export" will only export a binary
version of keys even thought one of the choices is to export the key as
an armored ".asc" version.

I hope this is clear and detailed enough.

Larry

[Bug 1900347] [NEW] Doesn't import gpg keys Doesn't export armored (asc) gpg keys

2020-10-18 Thread Larry C.
Public bug reported:

Very similar to bug # 1577198. Seahorse (Passwords and Keys) won't
import gpg keys. But if I double click on the gpg key in the file
manager it will show as imported after I restart Seahorse. After keys
are imported (using the double click method or CLI) they can only be
exported as binary keys i.e. keyname.pgp. If I try the option to export
as a keyname.asc version (armored) I only get the same binary key.
Everything works fine with gpg in a terminal.

This is with a fresh install of 20.04.1, Seahorse 3.36-1 with Seahorse-
daemon and Seahorse-nautilis installed. The Gnupg version is 2.2.19

[Bug 1850201] Re: Memory usage grows when locking/unlocking the screen

2020-05-18 Thread C. Michael Pilato
I'm also seeing a steady growth in gnome-shell's memory usage over time. I
have extensions installed that don't appear to be required by Ubuntu 20.04
(meaning if I try to 'apt remove'
them, apt wants to remove 'ubuntu-deskop', too).

Here's the listing of my relevant extensions directories:

$ ls -l /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 27 09:35 'desktop-icons@csoriano'/
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Apr 27 09:28 'ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com'/
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Apr 27 09:31 'ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com'/
$ ls -l ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/
total 0
$

Over time I find that gnome-shell's reported memory usage per 'top' steadily

Today it was showing 3.1g before I finally logged out of the machine and back

I wish I had more information to share, but at this time, I don't. Will report
back
if/when I do, though.

[Bug 1834084] [NEW] Selecting Text and CLICKING Permanently Removes Text

2019-06-24 Thread Jason C. McDonald
Public bug reported:

It seems a prior bug has resurfaced, with a slightly different behavior
now. (This is *not* a duplicate of gtk#1447)

**Version:** 3.32.1-2
**OS:** Ubuntu MATE 19.04

In the email composer window, if you select text in the body, and
*click* anywhere else in the composition pane, the text you selected is
sometimes permanently deleted (cannot be accessed from undo).

When this happens, the undo history itself is mangled, so pressing
Ctrl+Z will try to "undo" as if the text were still there, meaning
intentionally deleted text will be inserted in strange places, etc.

This can be a bit unpredictable. For example, if you change the style of
text (Normal/Preformatted/Header) first, it seems to prevent it. There
seem to be other actions that can sometimes prevent it, or sometimes it
just won't happen at all, even following the steps below exactly. (It
happens about half the time for me...usually more often when the email
is important, ha ha.)

1. Open a new Compose window.
2. Type some text in the body.
3. Using the mouse, select some text.
4. Click elsewhere in the composition pane.

Be advised, **modifier keys, arrow keys, or clicking outside the
composer window do NOT cause the text to be deleted.**

Be advised, this was previously reported at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/issues/500 and dismissed as
"blame the environment".

[Bug 1827791] Re: Dell XPS 13 9380 - Screen and input freezes / hangs temporarily

2019-05-20 Thread Daniel C
In comment 28, the freeze happened just before taking the log, yet the
last log entry was from ~1 minute earlier, so it doesn't look like there
were any relevant log entries.

However just now I had a freeze, and there are some messages in dmesg:

[10980.231902] perf: interrupt took too long (2512 > 2500), lowering
kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 79500
[11986.082217] perf: interrupt took too long (3142 > 3140), lowering
kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 63500
[16384.901113] perf: interrupt took too long (3928 > 3927), lowering
kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50750

Also in journalctl -b0:

May 20 22:30:09 daniel-XPS-13-9380 kernel: perf: interrupt took too long
(3928 > 3927), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50750

The previous journalctl message is from a few minutes prior.

Searching for the error message suggests that perhaps these messages
aren't any major cause for concern though.

[Bug 1826219] Re: Input locks frequently/high CPU usage after 18.10->19.04 upgrade

2019-05-13 Thread Daniel C
Hi Paul, thanks for pointing me to this bug from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1827791.

Is this also on a Dell XPS 13 9380?

Your comment about Wayland made me curious, as I was using the default
Xorg session.

Testing with Wayland on 19.04 I also see the same problem (actually I
think it's more prominent with Wayland than it was with Xorg).

I also see lines like this in journalctl -b0:

May 13 21:34:46 daniel-XPS-13-9380 org.gnome.Shell.desktop[1673]: Window
manager warning: last_user_time (242191) is greater than comparison timestamp
(242190). This most likely represents a buggy client sending inaccurate
timestamps in messages such as _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW. Trying to work around...

manager warning: W1 appears to be one of the offending windows with a timestamp

And:

I am returning to the Launchpad after a few years away from Ubuntu and

[Bug 1799293] Re: Locking the screen once leaves screen contents visible but not interactive. Locking the screen a second time works.

2019-01-14 Thread Gabriel C.
@hjwp2, For most folk I do believe Super+L twice is sufficient but it
isn't a full workaround. While it does suspend the machine, it doesn't
prevent the thing folks are fussing about: If someone wakes up your
machine the UI is still bugged, so a random citizen is still able to
interact with the docks (so they can run any script you have in your
dock). That and... maybe you don't want to suspend your machine. How
big of a deal these are is... relative.

[Bug 1800352] Re: screen lock leaves desktop and current applications displayed unless activated twice

2018-12-03 Thread Gabriel C.
@hjwp2 - FWIW, for me it does bring up the lock screen but it's still
bugged, as--while I cannot interact with them once they're started--I am
able to start applications in the Gnome Dock and as well as interact
with any Gnome Activities Bar widgets.

Depending on what's on your dock, I suppose this could be "bad".

[Bug 1762952] Re: Alternative shortcut for layout switching Alt+Shift unexpectedly set by default

2018-11-18 Thread C. Daniel Mojoli B.
This bug made using emacs and IntelliJ Idea a nuisance. I found a simple
workaround.
0
=1=

You can verify how ALT and SHIFT are not being detected simultaneously by
running
$ xkbwatch

Notice how the blinky lights change for ALT and for SHIFT but not for
both at the same time.

=2=

$ setxkbmap -query
rules: evdev
model: pc105
layout: us,us,us
variant:,intl,
options:grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll

THIS IS THE PROBLEM

=3=

We will now unset ALT-SHIFT toggle.

$ setxkbmap -option -option grp_led:scroll
^^^
DELIBERATELY EMPTY

The first empty -option erases all options, the second one just carries
over an option we want to keep. Additional -option clauses can preserve
other preexisting options.

I can still change to next/previous input source with whatever is
configured in Settings/Keyboard/Typing

=4=

Do step =2= again and notice how ALT and SHIFT now play together
simultaneously.

I am now a happy Emacs and IntelliJ user. This is a single command
workaround.

[Bug 1801098] [NEW] gnome-software does not exit a search

2018-11-01 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

I (accidentally) started Rhythmbox for the firt time ever at this
laptop. It started, and a pop-up came asking if I wanted to install
additional needed codecs (title line says "Available software for MPEG-4
ACC decoder", so I guess this was the search argument.

I accepted, and gnome-software opened with a search result for GSTreamer
codecs. I installed two of them, life is good, closed (Alt-F4) gnome-
software.

Then I decided to install some other package via GS as well. Opened
(again) it, and... I am shown a search result for GStreamer codecs. I
cannot exit this search. (via the "<" at the left of the title line). I
can only close the thing.

End result: gnome-software is now, for all practical purposes,

restarting gnome-shell (alt+F2 --> "r"), and during regular use gnome-

[Bug 1704533] Re: French language locale missing : Gnome-Weather

2017-12-08 Thread Christophe C
In fact the problem is simple : libgweather-common.deb had not package
the traductions (!!).

In debian sid, libgweather-common.deb (3.26.0-1) include (a part of) the trad
files in /usr/share/locale. For example :
/usr/share/locale/et/LC_MESSAGES/libgweather-3.0.mo
/usr/share/locale/et/LC_MESSAGES/libgweather-locations.mo
/usr/share/locale/eu/LC_MESSAGES/libgweather-3.0.mo
/usr/share/locale/eu/LC_MESSAGES/libgweather-locations.mo
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/libgweather-3.0.mo
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/libgweather-locations.mo
...

See here the complet list of "normals" files :
https://packages.debian.org/sid/all/libgweather-common/filelist.

In Ubuntu 17.10 and 18.04, libgweather-common.deb has NOT these files.
/usr/share/locale is not include.

I picked the 2 files which interess me in libgweather-common.deb from sid :
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/libgweather-3.0.mo
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/libgweather-locations.mo
and i copied them (in root) in the same directory on my disk. And GNOME-WEATHER
just Work. In french.

So please, rebuild libgweather-common.deb with /usr/share/locale/. Or
directly use the sid version

[Bug 1724597] [NEW] Regression: Text selection not places in PRIMARY clipboard

2017-10-18 Thread Robert C Jennings
Public bug reported:

On artful this morning my text selections in gnome-terminal (and not in
other desktop applications) are not places in the PRIMARY clipboard (or
whatever you call the middle mouse button). I don't find a user
preference to change this. I would like to be able to highlight text
with the mouse in the terminal and then paste with middle mouse button.
Middle mouse paste does work in the terminal for text selected in other
applications. Only the placement of text into the paste buffer is
failing in gnome-terminal.

Apport done.

I understand the 2 lines : one snap and one deb.

But today it's absolutly confusing. It's important to insist about a
clear presentation of what you install.

I'm nearly sure that 90% of ubunteros don't know what is a snap package.

Excuse me, but Jeremy Bicha (jbicha) ask me
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1711728)
to DON'T creat the bug in gnome-software, but in the specific package of
the application.

Christophe.

Please file individual bugs against those apps and add the tag
'appstream'. If you can find the upstream bug tracker for a specific
app, it would probably be useful to file a bug there too.

I'm closing this bug because it's not specific enough to be fixed.

[Bug 151365] Re: Autosave doesn't work for Unsaved Documents

2017-03-03 Thread Jason C. McDonald
I dug into the code to try and fix this, but it's a lot more complex
than it looks. If anyone wants to start digging, look at `gedit-
tab.c:248` - that's the first catch conditional. Also look at the
function getting called if that conditional passes - there's a similar
catch conditional in there.

The main problem is that auto-save pulls in the file object, which
doesn't exist if the document is unsaved. Autosave would actually have
to save the file to some special "temporary" directory. Easier said than
done.

[Bug 1314556] Re: Unable to mount Android MTP device

2015-10-30 Thread Silviu C.
What I can say is that it never worked for me on Trusty with the 3.13 kernels
and continues to not work with the mainline 4.2.5 kernel.

Which USB port I plug it in does also not matter. Tried USB 3.0 ports on the
back and two of the USB 2.0 ones. No dice. Same for the ones on the front of my
machine.

Luckily this thing can change to a mass storage device, but it's still a weird
and annoying issue.

[Bug 1299604] Re: evolution keeps asking for password

2015-10-16 Thread João C . Fernandes
Hi,

I am able to reproduce this with accounts added directly to evolution.

I have 3 email accounts on evolution 2 of them were added using the
Online accounts assistant those work correctly (Gmail, and Office 365).
These work correctly.

Nonetheless, if I add an account directly through Evolution for Exchange
the email account will work correctly, but after a restart of evolution
whenever I press the "Super" key , the prompt for the password of the
Exchange account is presented when I am sure it is correct.

[Bug 1406735] [NEW] package udev 208-8ubuntu8.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 102

2014-12-31 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Public bug reported:

A few weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 10.10 server with the addition of the
xubuntu-desktop packages. Everything started out alright until i tried
to install sendmail in place of postfix. That installaton failed,
reporting a similar error:

subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit
status 102

From there, things went from bad to worse. I was now unable to finish
the install of sendmail nor could I remove it fully and reinstall
postfix. Spamassassin seemed to be one critical package that hept
reporting errors. As I tried to install or remove packages using
synaptic, the system most of the time refused to act due to dascading
errors and partially removed packages that could not be removed, even by
force.

Today I threw up my hands and did a complete fresh install of the
system. Everything went well for the basic packages until I ran
software updater. A few packages were scheduled to be updated,
including udev and it has now faild in the exact same manner.

Could someone look at this and provide a quick reply as to what can be
done to rectify this situation. I am afraid to install or remove any
other software for fear of corrupting the system further and I currently
do not have a usable system.

Let me know if additional information is required. Thanks.
