Update: I've discovered that this bug seems to be associated with Unity in 10.10 Netbook Edition on my computer so I'll just use Gnome. As much as I like Unity, it seems to be buggy (the Unity launcher also ignores clicks sometimes). Or maybe I'll install Xfce. I'm running 10.10 Netbook Edition on a Samsung N145P netbook (Atom CPU) and have the same bug. The date does not update on the desktop but the system date is correct.
