[Bug 508618] Re: Setting max-specpdl-size of 34295 allows segfaults with 'simple' elisp

2017-11-27 Thread era
Do you mean this is a new way to repro? Which replaces the old? (For
all versions, or just the latest one you tried?)

If we are to finally report this upstream, can you provide a brief use
case to assess the priority of this? If it's just an academic
curiosity, I don't really see the point; but even in that case, it would
make more sense for it to sit in the Emacs bug tracker where the people
who can do something about it at least have a chance to stumble into it.
Here, it's not doing anyone any good.

[Bug 405498] Re: forward-sexp parses character literal ?; as comment

2017-05-13 Thread era
Upstream is now (finally!) closed as Wontfix, but the rationale is that
other code paths have been updated to provide a useful warning (if I am
reading this correctly). Updating Package: from emacs22 (sic) to emacs25
and setting status to Fix committed.

[Bug 1100806] Re: Gnome terminal can't get into parent directoy

2014-12-07 Thread era
Why was this filed against command-not-found? Please follow up with a
rationale. In the meantime, I'm adding a task for the gnome-terminal
which to the best of my understanding is also the terminal in Unity.

Unfortunately, the link to Ubuntu Forums is broken. Could you please
fill in the information which used to be there, or find a new link?

Is this still reproducible in 14.10?

[Bug 1102342] [NEW] Lower-right resize control jumps to near-maximized

2013-01-21 Thread era
Public bug reported:

When I open a document in evince and attempt to resize it, the resize
control in the lower right corner will resize the window to the maximum
size, rather than stay under the cursor.

Grabbing a window edge and resizing from there works as expected, so as
a workaround, I can resize the evince window to the size I want by
dragging from the window edges rather than from the corner control; but
the workaround is annoying and cumbersome, and the impulse to use the
corner control is hard to unlearn.

I include the OS version info etc and below that a command-line sequence
demostrating the problem. Between the first and the second xwininfo
commands, I just barely had time to reach for the mouse and click and
hold the button over the bottom-right corner of the evince window.

I am running Xubuntu, pretty much out of the box. Perhaps the problem
is in the window manager or something? For lack of repeatability in
other applications, I am assuming this is a bug in evince, but I could
of course be wrong.

I am running dual monitors, the screen geometry as reported by xwininfo
-root is 3840x1080.

[Bug 1033869] [NEW] Cannot select by clicking text in zenity --list -radiolist

2012-08-07 Thread era
Public bug reported:

The dialog box I get for this does not allow me to select an item by
clicking on it.

zenity --list --text Pick an Item --radiolist --column --column
Item TRUE One FALSE Two FALSE Three FALSE Four

If I want to select the item Two, I cannot click on the text label
Two; I have to hit the radio button to the left of it. This is
inconsistent with how radio buttons generally work, and might wreak
havoc (power user clicks and hits Enter, only to realize too late that
the click didn't do anything). (Oh, but Enter doesn't worjk as
expected, either. Still, a plausible scenario; click label, click OK.)

Besides the inconsistency and error scenario, it is also a usability
problem, because the active area you can click on is very small, which
will harm users who are not expert mouse operators.

[Bug 631544] [NEW] Lock screen key combo does nothing immediately after switching virtual desktops

2010-09-06 Thread era
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

If I switch virtual desktops using ctrl+alt+arrow key, releasing the
arrow key and hitting L instead does nothing at all.

Steps to repro:
0. Have Desktop effects turned off (not sure if this is essential) and multiple
virtual desktops
1. Switch from one desktop to another using ctrl+alt+arrow keys. Leave
ctrl+alt depressed
2. Press L along with the still-depressed ctrl+alt

What I expect to happen:
Screen should blank; password dialog should appear if I move the mouse or touch
the keyboard

What actually happens:
Nothing.

Workaround:
If you release ctrl+alt and then hit ctrl+alt+L, it locks the screen just as
expected.

Fundamental security hygiene as well as company policy requires that I
lock my screen when I leave my computer. Annoyingly, I frequently find
myself returning to an unlocked screen when I have fetched my cup of
coffee, or whatever. I believe I have now pinpointed the cause: if I
switched virtual screens (e.g. so I remember to check my mail when I
return to my desk) just before leaving, the computer would not lock.
Further experimentation revealed that if I release the ctrl+alt keys and
then press ctrl+alt+L, locking seems to work just fine, but if I keep
ctrl+alt depressed after pressing an arrow key and press L, nothing
happens.

Sorry if this is filed against the wrong package. I do not currently
have an environment where I can try this under Compiz (i.e. with desktop
effects enabled).

[Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window

2010-03-09 Thread era
gnome-settings-daemon: like I write in my comments above, my
understanding of its role is probably flawed and/or incomplete, but
based on the suggestions in comment #43 and comment #44 and my critique
of these, I'd propose something like Manage GNOME system configuration
or maybe GNOME system configuration back-end. Perhaps these are too
technical, still. (And the manage verb is a bit of a red flag, but
then I guess so is back-end.)

[Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window

2010-03-08 Thread era
I downloaded http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/alpha-3/lucid-
desktop-i386.iso and booted it in Virtualbox. (Incidentally, it takes
several minutes to boot up!) I inspected the dialog System
Preferences Startup Applications and found the following issues to be
still open:

* Bluetooth Manager is still kind of vacuous
* Certificate and Key Storage has a very technical description
* Disk Notifications is ... unobvious. What does it actually do?
* GNOME Settings Daemon doesn't have a description, still
* Power kind of irks me, although it's not obvious how to improve it
* Print Queue Applet is still kind of riddled with jargon
* Update Notifier should IMHO mention that it checks for system software updates
* User folders update could still benefit from a somehow less obscure
description

The following issues are new, and it's not obvious to me that they
belong in this bug in particular.

* Certificate and Key Storage is not consistent with the other Gnome Keyring
stuff
* Unchecked items are greyed, as if you couldn't enable them (in fact you can)
* Gwibber is unchecked by default
* if enabled is kind of superfluous in the description of Personal File
Sharing

So it is indeed the Growl-ish thing which shows balloons for various
types of system events? There are some rather wild guesses for what to
put in the description in earlier messages in this bug report, but this
is what I thought as well.

Anyway, as per the quoted comment, the startup item doesn't configure
this, just adds it to the panel; so the description should be more along
the lines of enable notification pop-ups, I guess.

[Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window

2009-09-08 Thread era
@Chris Coulson: somebody who understands what gnome-settings-daemon and
its helper do should improve the _Comment field (or add if missing) in
their .desktop files.

See e.g. comment #21 for a slightly more detailed problem analysis and
comment #43 and the following ones for a draft proposal. Some comments
of mine in comment #47 might be useful as guidance for the person
authoring the descriptions.

To my current understanding, gnome-settings-daemon is the thing which
communicates between gconf and individual gconf clients. What role the
helper plays in this I don't know. To reiterate remarks from comment
#21, is it really absolutely necessary for there to be two different
components in the Startup Applications dialog? It would seem like an
improvement both for usability and functional purposes to have a single
entry there; if it needs to start two processes behind the scenes then
so be it, but that should probably not be exposed to the user in this
fashion (assuming that it does not really make much sense to run the
daemon without the helper, or vice versa); but please understand that my
mental model of this is probably less than adequate.

[Bug 324115] Re: gnome-display-properties changes desktop theme

2009-09-08 Thread era
The symptoms suggest that gnome-settings-daemon is crashing. Perhaps
you could run it with strace to see what causes it to exit, if it's not
a crash.

Something like this:

# somehow kill the current gnome-settings-daemon instance
# then run a new one with strace:
strace gnome-settings-daemon 2/tmp/gsd.strace
# once you repro the symptoms, the end of the strace file should show what gsd
did
# just before it quit

[Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window

2009-07-14 Thread era
I'm not entirely happy with the new description for Update Notifier:
Check for available updates automatically. The wording is somewhat
verbose (why would it check for unavailable updates, and how? Why is
this automatically? I think I kind of know why you put it there, but
is it really necessary?) but above all, if you don't know what sorts of
updates, how would you find out? Both of the proposals above are IMHO
more informative.

Martin Albisetti wrote on 2009-07-02:
Update notifier - Notifies you of system updates

Andruk wrote on 2009-07-02:
Update notifier - Notify about application updates

Check for software updates from Ubuntu and other software sources,
though a bit long, might approach some sort of synthesis.

Although I criticize the details of his wording, I think Michael Vogt's
proposal captures the essence of the discussion so far; describe what
functionality will stop working if you uncheck it. After all, that's
what this dialog box is meant for. Hence, perhaps Bluetooth Manager
could be something like Discover Bluetooth devices within range and
Network Manager perhaps something along the lines of Discover and
connect to networks (by implication, Internet connections; perhaps that
could somehow be worked into the description still).

[Bug 16285] Re: time-admin: User-selected time zone will not stick (for some locations)

2009-07-05 Thread era
In http://git.gnome.org./cgit/gnome-system-tools/tree/src/time/time-
tool.c the function oobs_time_config_get_timezone is used to populate
the GUI. This appears to use the functions from System Tools Backends
to actually obtain the current time zone.

Now, my understanding of the relationships and dependencies is far from
perfect, but I was able to read and roughly understand the code in
Time::TimeDate.pm -- it basically compares your /etc/localtime to the
available time zone files, and (duh) reports the first match.

But why doesn't it simply read my /etc/timezone?

jaunty$ perl -I/usr/share/system-tools-backends-2.0/scripts -MTime::TimeDate
-MUtils::File \
  -le 'print Time::TimeDate::get_timezone(/etc/localtime,
 /usr/share/zoneinfo)'
Europe/Mariehamn

Europe/Jersey != Europe/London
Europe/Podgorica != Europe/Sarajevo
America/Marigot != America/St_Barthelemy
Europe/Skopje != Europe/Sarajevo

Europe/Ljubljana != Europe/Sarajevo
Arctic/Longyearbyen != Europe/Oslo
Europe/Bratislava != Europe/Prague
Europe/San_Marino != Europe/Rome
America/Shiprock != America/Denver
Europe/Vatican != Europe/Rome

As predicted by this list, I was able to reproduce for Longyearbyen and
Jersey as well, and would expect the rest of the list to reprodce this
problem as well. For Longyearbyen - Olso and Jersey - London the
mapping is luckily to the proper main city in the governing territory,
so I guess it's less sensitive for them, but it's still a bug. If Rome
mapped to San Marino, or Denver to Shiprock, that would be similar to
the situation wrt Helsinki/Mariehamn. And Bratislava - Prague is
pretty grave, of course.

[Bug 226216] Re: Clock applet consistently displays different timezone after reboot

2009-07-04 Thread era
I'm still seeing this on a laptop running Jaunty. I have for a long
time observed that my time zone gets reset to Europe/Mariehamn. The
speculation that this might depend on access to wireless during boot
might be significant sounds like it could fit my situation, too,
although I have not been paying close attention to that aspect so far (I
rarely reboot anyway; I'd guess this might also be related to wireless
availability on wake up from suspend / hibernate as well, or instead).

Sorry, not yet prepared to offer repro steps, but I have been seeing
this on multiple installations and so consistently as to believe
everyone would trivially be experiencing this.

A very similar bug was fixed in the Clock applet a while back
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=519823 -- basically, the code
would guess your location based on latitude and longitude, and map to a
fairly random location from its database.

I'm guessing a similar fix should be applied for the time-admin

centralized into a single module or library).

[Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window

2009-07-02 Thread era
Thanks for pitching in here! Allow me to comment on a few of your
suggestions, though.

As a general comment, these are applications which are started when your
session is initiated. Many of them are infrastructure, daemon-type
programs which do not directly expose a user interface. Therefore I
find it slightly problematic to describe them in terms of what the user
can do.

GNOME accessibility - Arrange alternative interaction devices

I'd also be hesitant to coin new names for existing components. Users
who know what AT-SPI is might be annoyed to find it renamed to something
novel. In order to cover this legacy issue, at a minimum I'd like to
keep the old name in the description somewhere. How about

GNOME AT-SPI Accessibility - Enable alternative input and output
devices

Evolution alarm notifier - Configure advanced alarm clock features
(is this correct?)

I think they fixed this one already; the current one is IMHO clearer and
more correct.

GNOME keyring - Manage authentication for your GPG encryption keys

I'm at loss to the relationship between Seahorse and the GNOME Keyring.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME_Keyring says Seahorse should replace
the old keyring altogether. If that's the case, it will handle both SSH
and GPG keys. In any event, this component does manage them from the
system's perspective, but it's more of a daemon for interconnecting the
key store with applications, if I understand any of this at all. Maybe
this description is fine; I'm just thinking out loud here.

GNOME login sound - Configure system sounds

To the best of my understanding, this one merely plays the sound; you
configure it elsewhere.

GNOME Login Sound - Play the login chime

GNOME settings - Manage computer configurations
GNOME settings helper - Automatically manage computer
configurations (is this correct?)

I'm sorry, I'm not really comfortable with this. I don't understand
this (see my comments above) but in any event, I believe this manages
only the core GNOME configuration, i.e. basically what you can
manipulate with gconftool. Most of what users want to configure is
handled elsewhere.

GNOME splash screen - Change startup screen graphics

Again, like with the login sound, this one just executes, doesn't
configure.

Indicator applet - Configure notifications for system

Do you genuinely understand what this one does? Could you point to some
documentation? Is this the new notification thingamajig? Why does it
require a separate startup process in order to add something to the
panel, anyway?

Network manager - Connect to a computer network
Power manager - Change power settings

Again, these run a service which enable you to do these things, but do
not directly expose a user interface. Maybe I'm too picky; maybe these
are fine.

Finally, I vaguely think the Name field should perhaps be in Title Case,
like most of the existing entries.

Thanks again for coming up with a good proposal. These are all minor
nits for the most part.

[Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window

2009-06-29 Thread era
@Marcel Stimberg: Sounds like a good plan. However, in the end game,
it's the upstream maintainers' call whether or not they agree; but we
could well submit patches and refer to these principles. (I don't
suppose Ubuntu is going to be prepared to deviate from upstream just to
fix this.) Perhaps a patch to the GNOME HIG policy should be proposed
as well? If this is turned into GNOME policy it ought to be trivial to
get patches approved for the individual applications.

I'm only noting those which are not already noted and/or fixed.

Check for new hardware driv... - Notify about new hardware

Perhaps the Jockey team would like to consider a shorter name field if

GNOME Keyring Daemon - No description

They took out the Wrapper but didn't fix the rest? Also I guess
Daemon isn't very newbie-friendly, although i don't particularly want to
see that changed personally. What's more bothersome is the concept of a
keyring. What is it? Is this like PGP keys or SSH keys, or both, or
what?

 Indicator applet - No description

Really vague. The real meat is /usr/share/gnome-panel/add-indicator-
applet.py which is in the gnome-panel package. Adding as New.

 Seahorse Daemon - No description

No idea what this does. Adding package seahorse as New.

User folders update - Update common folders names to...

If you expand the window, the description is actually fairly good. In

[Bug 242476] Re: Should be able to make link to files in directory without write permissions or in fat32 directory in home directory

2009-03-28 Thread era
@Sebastian Bacher: could you point to those other bugs please. Thanks.

I'm reopening this because the greyed-out option makes it appear as if
creating a symlink was not possible. My proposal for an alternate
implementation would be to change it into Make Link ... with an
ellipsis, and open a Save As ... dialog for the user to indicate where
to place the symlink.

(I cannot like or condone the WIndows way of doing this, which is to
place it on the desktop when it cannot be created where you wanted it.
In fact you probably pretty much never actually want a link in the
directory where the target is, anyway.)

[Bug 329389] [NEW] Party mode ununderstandable and undocumented

2009-02-14 Thread era
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

The manual does not explain what party mode is. The status bar help
text is not helpful at all; when you hover the cursor over the Party
Mode menu entry, it laconically says Change the status of the party
mode. (Is that even English?)

I was scared that it would ruin all my playlists and send my email
address to the spammers, but I tried it anyway. It seems to toggle a
full-screen view. Then why is it not called Full Screen? Does it do
something more?

The top Google hit http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=694932 seems
inconclusive to me. Does Party mode involve changes in how the play
queue can be manipulated and/or how the computer can be used?

Minimal fix:
 * Describe Party Mode in the on-line help

Bonus points:
 * Improve the Status bar help text

[Bug 187848] Re: volume control/mixer interface unusable

2009-02-05 Thread era
My concrete problem is that the front panel mic input doesn't seem to
work. While troubleshooting this, I have read enough to actually almost
understand the interface jumble that is the gnome-volume-control applet,
but nowhere near enough to understand whether the actual problem is
already reported.

In any event, I feel that one of the things which makes this
inordinately hard to sort out is that the g-v-c user interface hides
away relevant controls and displays irrelevant controls. If it were
better designed, I would not have to Google to find out which controls I
can ignore, and which ones I will need to enable in the Preferences so I
can twiddle them.

[Bug 187848] Re: volume control/mixer interface unusable

2009-02-03 Thread era
Isn't the applet you are referring to called gnome-volume-control (as of
Intrepid, in package gnome-media)? That's the applet I get when I
right-click on the speaker in the top menu bar and select open volume
control from the menu.

Here's a screenshot of gnome-alsamixer:
http://dollarunderscore.wordpress.com/2007/05/29/gnome-alsa-mixer/ --
it's fairly similar, but not identical to gnome-volume-control.

I concur that this is a serious usability problem which should
definitely be fixed.

[Bug 231034] Re: desktop freeze when moving emacs in workspace switcher

2009-01-17 Thread era
Lincoln: can you be a little bit more specific? If you disable the AT
stuff in the Session manager, does that cause the problem to go away?

(System - Preferences - Sessions - Startup Programs tab -- the ones
which seem relevant are the AT-SPI Registry Wrapper [no idea what it
does, but AT-SPI is the accessibility voodoo], and Visual Assistance. I
would place my bets on the first one.)

[Bug 146918] Re: poor descriptions for some startup programs

2009-01-17 Thread era
This may seem like a feeble accomplishment, but I managed to find out
what AT-SPI means, and so might be able to figure out what AT-SPI
Registry Wrapper means.

According to http://accessibility.kde.org/developer/atk.php#coreclasses
AT-SPI is Assistive Technology Service Provider Interface and there
are also descriptions of the architecture etc.

Funny that an accessibility / usability component would make the mistake
of having a name which is completely undecipherable to the uninitiated,
and no description (as of 8.10).

/usr/lib/gnome-session/helpers/at-spi-registryd-wrapper and the
corresponding /usr/share/gnome/autostart/at-spi-registryd-
wrapper.desktop are in the gnome-session package, so marking as New
for gnome-session (or should I Be Bold and mark as Confirmed?)

My proposed fix would be to add the English description Framework for
applications to interact with assistive technologies. I would be
tempted to say Gnome applications or even GTK+ applications but
ironically, the usability folks tend to shoot down anything which
involves a technical acronym (but then the name field is barely anything
but a technical acronym).

[Bug 146918] Re: poor descriptions for some startup programs

2009-01-17 Thread era
There's a bunch of weird things in Startup Programs in Session Preferences
in Intrepid. Should I post them here, or create a new bug? This bug report is
rather unwieldy as it is, so perhaps it would be better to create a new one
 for Intrepid.

I never got a reply, so at least I'm enumerating here what I think is
wrong.

(Format is Name[en] - Description[en] - my comments.)

AT SPI Registry Wrapper - No description - noted above

Bluetooth Manager - Bluetooth Manager applet - package bluez-gnome, adding
New
The description is completely redundant after you remove applet which as
noted elsewhere in this bug report is not recommended. Please describe what it
does for the user. Suggest Enable wireless connections to Bluetooth devices
such as mobile phones or some such. (Too long, admittedly, but then maybe the
UI should be changed to accommodate longer descriptions.)

Evolution Alarm Notifier - Evolution Alarm Notifier - noted above

GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper - No description - package gnome-
session, should have a description. Allow applications to access the
keyring perhaps?

GNOME Login Sound - No description - I guess we can live with this :-)
Or should it say Boing bling thud ksh?

GNOME Settings Daemon - No description - package gnome-settings-
daemon, adding New. Manage your GNOME session's settings maybe?

GNOME Settings Daemon Helper - No description - now this I think has
a more fundamental problem. Are there situations where you would want
to run the helper but not the daemon itself, or vice versa? Should that
be expressed as a preference in the daemon's settings somewhere instead
then? IMHO this is exposing an implementation boundary which should not
be exposed to the user.

GNOME Splash Screen - No description - gnome-session. As with the
sound above I guess, not really crucial to describe.

Network Manager - Network Manager applet - as per Gabor Kelemen's
comment above, already fixed upstream

PulseAudio Session Manager - Load module-x11-xsmp into PulseAudio -
package pulseaudio-module-x11, adding New. Wayyy too technical
description.

Window Manager - No description - package gnome-session. I can't
help but think this is also a detail which normal users would never want
control over.
