Re: [Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) with LibreOffice is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04 (see comment 93)

2020-05-27 Thread ethanay
I wonder if there are residual components of the problem that go away when
you upgrade against or do a fresh install? I never tested 3.36.2 against my
original 19.10 install, I just went to 20.04 when the fix was released.

So, for example, maybe if I had installed 3.36.2 while running my original
19.10 install and config, I would be seeing problems still. Just a thought!

2020-05-20 Thread ethanay
Tim, I don't know, I am just "another user"

But I appreciate you testing! For me, the pattern has always been quite
consistent for the first cut/copy to fail, and so is fairly easy for me to
test.

The different symptoms are curious, with it being very predictable for some
and random for others!

It is also interesting to me that the problem appears only in copying to
clipboard from some programs but not others.

Lastly, it is interesting that it was fixed first in some programs (eg for
me, LO calc) before others (LO Writer).

I don't know enough about how different sources for clipboard data interact
with the clipboard manager, but it leads me to believe there is actually
more than one clipboard bug. If so, it will take users being vigilant to
collect log and other debug info as they try to reproduce the more
intermittent symptoms, and submit in a different report.

Also I don't understand how the comments implying that this problem
isn't being given "high enough priority" are a. valid (as in true; in my
experience this bug is getting a lot of attention, and the main thing
holding back the release of the fix right now is *user testing* e.g.,
from the people complaining?) and b. helpful to resolving the bug.

This is the default install configuration for Pop!_OS. Under this

but is consistently present in LibreOffice Writer.

I am installing --proposed updates and will reboot and retest.

Copy Q does nothing to fix the issue for me. It exists with or without any
clipboard manager or extension on my Pop!_OS 19.10 install.

Fortunately for my workflow I do as much work as possible in programs not
affected by the bug such as gedit and zim and I believe focuswriter.

Much thanks to the people working to squash this bug! And apologies to real
life bugs for the violent analogy!

the bug persists on my system with or without any clipboard manager or
extension installed. And others have reported the behavior in default
installs. so I feel a bit skeptical that a clipboard manager or extension
is implicated.

Re: [Bug 1852183]

2020-04-27 Thread ethanay
But you are not a consumer, and this is free (libre) open-source software,
not something you bought. It is something you participate in. "Won't fix"
doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't going to participate in or assist
a solution, it means that the ultimate responsibility lies with the
upstream maintainer of the package.

In your analogy, toyota would pass the info (and offer support to) the
company that makes the defective part. Either that company comes through or
they end up needimg to select a different part (or package) from a
different company. It is a process that requires patience and good faith
coordination.

There are good reasons for this. Not just to avoid duplication of effort,
but also to avoid unnecessarily creating confusion, fragmentation, new
problems or even messing up the upstream efforts to solve the issue.

So from a fellow FLOSS end user (who unfortunately has few skills to offer
except bug reporting), I feel that your attitude is far more interesting to
examen.

Toward an open source world,

Ethan

Re: [Bug 1852183]

2020-03-30 Thread ethanay
This bug occurs in Pop!_OS 19.10 for me with or without a clipboard manager
installed.

In addition, when I do have a clipboard manager installed, it occurs BEFORE
any clipboard manager i tried receives any information about what I tried
to copy or paste, so seems inaccurate to me that blaming a clipboard
manager will get to the root issue.

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-11-12 Thread ethanay
I can only reproduce this bug in LibreOffice Calc (spreadsheet). I
cannot reproduce it in Writer or Geary.

But it is a consistent problem for me in Calc.

Here are the symptoms/process:
1. First new copy invariably fails to copy text, instead copies/stores a bitmap
image.
2. If I "cut" instead of "copy" then I have to use the "undo" function to
restore the text so I can attempt again.
3. Undoing my paste/cut operations consistently causes LibreOffice to crash.
4. Second attempt at cut/copy invariably succeeds.

I will try to grab a crash report as it seems specifically related to
this bug.

I noticed this immediately upon upgrading from 19.04 to 19.10, all with
latest stock kernel/software/updates. IE, using the standard versions in
the repositories.

The behavior from this bug has the potential to cause data loss: When
LibreOffice crashes before "undo" can restore the cut text, whatever
chunk of data that was intended to be cut gets completely discarded and
does not get recovered with the rest of the document, probably because
it was stored in a buffer somewhere separate from the actual document
data itself.

So all in all this bug converts text into image and then deletes the
data altogether.

Experiencing similar issues/behavior in other gnome office apps:
contacts and todo list.

Contacts has actually given a useful error when trying to edit a google
contact, but the error message disappears very quickly and cannot be
copied or pasted. Attached is a screenshot.

This is all occurring on a fresh install. All I did was install the
software, link my google accounts, and try to run the apps. For some
reason, they are not self-configuring with the google accounts
correctly.

2018-09-15 Thread ethanay
1. Renamed "calendar" folder under ~/.cache/evolution, and also the
~/.config/evolution and .local/share/evolution folders
2. rebooted. Then I
3. de-activated and re-activated "calendar" under each separate online account.
4. then I restarted Calendar app.

This appears to have fixed many of the issues described above. But has
also produced a crash every time I modify a setting. These should be
automatically reported as bugs.

[Bug 1792668] Re: gnome-calendar fails to sync, update, or cache

2018-09-15 Thread ethanay
** Description changed:

Not sure if this is three different bugs or three symptoms of the same
problem, but I am observing three different problematic behaviors on a
fresh 18.04.1 install with latest updates:

  1. Failure to sync: I have all my online google accounts active, but the
calendar does not seem to grab new events from the online database. Nor
- does it transmit new events to the online database.
+ does it transmit new events to the online database. Nor does it do any
+ of these things when manually selecting the "synchronize" option under
+ the menu.

  2. Failure to update: I cannot manually add new events to the calendar.
Although the app appears fully interactive, none of my interactions
(e.g., adding an event) seem to actually get entered into the calendar,
  even locally.

  3. Failure to cache: I have many local calendars displayed that the
calendar app has appeared to pick up from other applications' data. I
try to manually remove them by opening the calendars display, clicking
on the calendar and clicking "remove." This appears to remove the
calendar from this menu, but it doesn't remove it from being
displayable. When I close and re-open the application, the local
calendars have reappeared. Also, I cannot permanently rename calendars.
When I close the app and re-open it, the calendar name has reverted to
  its original state.

This might be related in part to another issue, where I have my
UbuntuOne account active, but still get prompted regularly for my

Something in the crash OR an automatic recovery process erased saved work

What I expected to happen: Gedit crashed, and I expected to be able to
open my saved files and resume working after the crash
What happened instead: Gedit somehow overwrote the saved files with
blank data. One file's hidden backup was deleted in the process, somehow.
I was able to restore a recent version from the other file's hidden backup
 copy.

   More information:

I had two saved files open as tabs in a single gedit window. I
copied a paragraph from the first tab, and opened up a saved
LibreOffice Writer document. Upon trying to paste the paragraph data
I had copied from gedit into libreoffice writer, gedit crashed.
Ubuntu prompt asked me whether I wanted to restart gedit, and i
confirmed. Gedit reopened the saved files as completely blank
   documents.

I am checking the box for security vulnerability because it might be
something someone could exploit to force unauthorized loss of data.

[Bug 861171] Re: Shutdown from greeter does nothing when multiple accounts open

2012-11-08 Thread ethanay
why can't the greeter just say, X user(s) is/are still logged in.
Please log out of all accounts before attempting to shut down or
reboot. and ignore all the nastly permissions stuff??

If an admin really needs to shut down, it's easy enough to do via
terminal or tty. are there really daily use cases where a standard user
needs permission to shut down if other accounts are still logged in?

i think we should also consider whether those other accounts are most
likely to be guest sessions, anyways...

   Steps to reproduce:
   1. start a guest session
   2. allow the computer to suspend after timeout
   3. resume the computer from suspend
   4. a password prompt prevents guest (or any) user from resuming session

As it stands, the user must press switch user at #4 above to go back

If the way that a guest session works is that it creates a temporary
random password every time, that password should automatically be
entered at step 4 above so the user never sees the password prompt,

OR the guest session should always be created with require my
password when waking from suspend unchecked.

OR, computer should resume at login screen indicating that a guest
user is already logged in (automatically run switch user command
   before suspend or after resume)?

2011-01-17 Thread ethanay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

A few months ago David Tombs recommended
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/devicekit-
power/+bug/425411/comments/150) I file a new bug against gnome-power-
manager on this issue.

It doesn't seem to be related to bug 425411 as power state changes are
arbitrary:

Suspend (on AC or battery), leave suspended for a while (several hours),
resume, and about once every 4 or 5 times it will automatically suspend
again.

I always suspend via laptop lid close or idle time (10 min battery, 30
min AC).

[Bug 531516] Re: Evince can't handle radio buttons anymore

2010-08-09 Thread ethanay
Confirmed.

Also, same on Windows as well, running Evince 2.30.3: Created a
fillable PDF in OpenOffice 3.2.1. Form displays and operates properly
using Acrobat Reader 9. Radio buttons do not function in Evince.

Also, Evince seems to be incapable of even properly displaying other fillable
forms, such as those available here:

[Bug 425411] Re: Computer suspends immediately after resuming if power is unplugged while suspended

2010-07-25 Thread ethanay
This was fixed with me for a while, but I'm seeing it again on an up-to-
date Karmic laptop (Dell XPS m1330)...

1. Occasional, seemingly-random suspend immediately after resume
2. Suspend after resume if power state changes during suspend (e.g., laptop is
unplugged)

both seem to happen after a threshold time is exceeded -- can't
reproduce with a suspend and immediate resume. All cases involve laptop
lid close triggering suspend.

@ Michal

I believe this relates specifically to removable, external USB devices
and drives...

 @Martin Pitt
It's a difference whether you want to eject the media in a
drive, or disconnect the drive (for CD-ROMs, card readers,
 cameras, etc.)

Who in the world will want to actually remove the CD-ROM drive? AFAIK
it would cause the drive to be unusable until a reboot so I cannot think
who would really want anything like that...

[Bug 201598] Re: [Hardy] Eye of Gome zoom doesn't work as advertised anymore

2010-03-13 Thread ethanay
Isn't that the default behavior? I have not changed any settings on
several Ubuntu installs and they all have
/apps/eog/view/scroll_wheel_zoom set true by default.

If that's not supposed to be default behavior, is this not then a real
bug?

[Bug 538564] [NEW] horizontal scroll to the left is nonfunctional

[Bug 538564] Re: horizontal scroll to the left is nonfunctional

2010-03-13 Thread ethanay
More info:

behavior only appears when using ctrl modifier

so when /apps/eog/view/scroll_wheel_zoom is set true:
user is unable to scroll left across image when zoomed

when /apps/eog/view/scroll_wheel_zoom is set false:
user is unable to zoom out with horizontal scroll

This behavior appears to affect gThumb as well.

In general, it seems that the HIG implementation for scrolling is all
messed up, as it is a confusing set of different operations for each
program. But that is a different bug...

[Bug 453072] Re: Context menu for an USB pendrive shows Unmount, Eject and Safely Remove Drive

2010-03-04 Thread ethanay
I understand the difference between all the options, and use all of
them. I am still confused by the GUI. I think much of this is solvable
with pop-up dialogs. See examples:

USB flash (thumb) drive:
1. Insert/connect drive.
2. [automount]
3. Press eject
4. Drive unmounts and dialog box appears: No ejectable media found in drive.
To disconnect, click 'safely remove drive.'
5. [safely remove behaves as expected]

External USB CD/DVD Burner:
1. Connect external drive
2. [automount]
3. Press safely remove
4. Drive ejects and pop-up confirmation appears: Are you sure you want to
turn off power to the drive?
5. YES: [Unmount and poweroff] NO: [Unmount only]
5. [eject behaves as expected]

The case of an external USB HDD is most concerning, because the hdd can
be powered up and active when the user suddenly unplugs it and regularly
forces an emergency powerdown while believing they properly prepared it
for removal. We now have the GUI tools to avoid this (YAY!) -- but we
must have clarity.

The only remaining question for the beginning user at this point is:
Ok, so what does 'UnMount' do then?

Since Unmount is a more advanced option, it is normal and ok for this to be a
question for new users of Unix-like systems. They can search online for the
answer, and should be directed to resources like this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount

It is fairly simple, and I think intuitive for the user to learn: When
the drive is mounted, the files are accessible to read/write normally.
Unmounting leaves the drive visible but does not allow normal
read/write.

[Bug 425411] Re: Computer suspends immediately after resuming if power is unplugged while suspended

2010-02-23 Thread ethanay
Are there other immediately resuspends bugs that are currently open?

The power state problem this bug describes is now fixed on my XPS m1330,
but I am still experiencing immediate resuspends on occasion. It seems
to be after

a. locking or blanking the screen, closing the lid (triggers suspend), or
b. letting the computer suspend itself and

attempting resume after several hours have passed.

[Bug 150702] Re: alt shift tab stopped navigating windows

2010-01-24 Thread ethanay
Re: #40: All Key(s) to change layout options were already deselected
for me, so it doesn't appear related to the problem I am experiencing.

Re: #30: Gconf-editor already has the correct compiz keybindings:
ShiftAltTab is listed as the key for prev_key in the static switcher
plugin, even though it doesn't work. I reassigned a different
keybinding, then changed it back and it now works. It did NOT work when
I simply tried to disable the prev_key binding and then re-enable. I
had to change it to something else (I used ControlAltT) and change
it back.

No downloading/installing compizconfig-settings-manager necessary.

[Bug 492649] Re: Laptop automatically suspends right after resume if power cable was disconnected before resuming

2010-01-04 Thread ethanay
i have this bug as well on a Dell XPS M1330 running current 9.10

i have been trying to reproduce this bug consistently for several months
and failing. just today it happened again -- twice:

1. suspend laptop via lid close, disconnect power, resume on battery. laptop
immediately resuspends. 2nd resume attempt is successful.
2. suspend laptop via lid close, reconnect power, resume on AC. laptop
immediately resuspends. 2nd resume attempt is successful.

maybe it has less to do with the state of the power (AC vs battery) as
it does with a power state *change* while suspended?

I have the same behavior in Karmic with the latest updates. There is an Ubuntu

This is a more serious bug than one might think -- to the casual user it
can look like an entire directory of pdf files has been deleted or
otherwise lost, because they fail to show up in Nautilus.

[Bug 239413] Re: Four steps of brightness changing after pressing a brightness key only once

2009-11-02 Thread ethanay
running fresh install of 9.10 on Dell M1330

isn't there supposed to be just one step per actual button press? if
so, i'm getting two...

[Bug 149665] Re: when returning from suspend my laptop tries to hibernate

2009-05-24 Thread ethanay
Unfortunately, I can confirm this bug is *still present* on my Dell XPS
m1330 running Hardy 8.04.2 w/latest

2.6.24-24-generic #1 SMP Wed Apr 15 15:54:25 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Last night, I left my computer idle, and it automatically went into
suspend. I left it that way all night and into the next day (over 12
hours) and upon waking the computer, it went immediately into hibernate.

I don't know if my previous test was insufficient or if there was a
regression...

 - Checking and unchecking various checkboxes in the Volume Control

Recording and Options tabs somewhat randomly. For example, after some
fiddling with the Input Source checkboxes in Preferences, between one

indistinguishable but apparently controlling different channels.
Unclearing the Input Source checkboxes in Preferences does not remove
 the entries reliably.

 - Other usability bugs are present, like the Preferences dialog having
checkboxes for not only the expected Line-in, Front Mic,
Microphone, but also IEC958 Capture, Capture, Capture 1,
Capture 2, and three identical Input Source entries. The hardware

Status in “gnome-media” source package in Ubuntu: Fix Released

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-media

The Options tab in gnome-volume-control has at least two usability problems:

 (1) The most glaring problem is that the Options tab for HDA Intel on-board
sound chipsets (specs below) has three input boxes all labelled the same
(Input Source), but apparently controlling different capture channels.

 (2) While on the Options tab, the status bar output is incorrect, saying
Volume of right channel on PCM, which bears no relation to any selections
 made.

 Screenshots attached below.

Audio is from the Intel G965 chipset. lspci -vv gives:

I suspect the support from alsa 1.0.14 for the onboard Intel sound chipset

[Bug 149665] Re: when returning from suspend my laptop tries to hibernate

2008-12-30 Thread ethanay
I am doubtful that it is kernel-related -- I've been running 2.6.24-19
much longer than when I remember this bug appearing on my system!

But anyway, I will, test an older version and see if the problem goes
away (or is masked by other problems...heh). Is there a particular
version you want me to test?

Maybe I will try to report a bug (or several bugs) for the problems I am
experiencing with the new kernels, but I am just an end user and feel
like I am in over my head as it is, and the problems seem complicated
that it's hard to recognize and understand them all.

[Bug 149665] Re: when returning from suspend my laptop tries to hibernate

2008-12-29 Thread ethanay
I can confirm that it STILL exists in Hardy:

Dell XPS m1330 running 8.04 w/latest
kernel version 2.6.24-19 because so far *all later versions of the kernel break
suspend/hibernate completely*

Here's when it happens:
Suspend on demand resumes normally
Suspend after preset time, via g-p-m causes hibernate on resume

For a long time this bug didn't exist, but it seems to have
(re)appeared(?) sometime in the last month or two

[Bug 138989] Re: [Gutsy] Usability problems in gnome-volume-control

2008-05-31 Thread ethanay
I am running Hardy w/latest and have this problem
Dell XPS m1330 with Intel HDA 2.0 Sigmatel 9228

3 input source selections in the options tab
and
3 mux (mux, mux 1, mux 2) and
3 capture (capture, capture 1, capture 2)
sliders in the recording tab

furthermore, unchecking these options in the preferences only removes
the first instance, leaving capture 1/2 and mux 1/2 displayed even
though they are unchecked (see attached picture).

1) I'm not sure why there are three of each of these options
2) regardless, the options aren't behaving correctly if they cannot be hidden
by unchecking them in the preferences menu

** Attachment added: unchecking capture 1, capture 2, mux 1, mux 2 fails to
hide them from view

[Bug 235897] Re: gnome-system-log Gtk-CRITICAL Segmentation fault

2008-05-30 Thread ethanay
I am running Ubuntu (gnome) desktop. After following your advice no
crash report was generated in /var/crash

In addition, I have tried enabling the automated crash reporting
service and it does not work. Manually launching report a problem
doesn't do a thing.

apport-gtk is installed but my system says it is missing, even after
attempted reinstallation.

[Bug 59616] Re: keyboard not working after logging in via gdm

2008-05-24 Thread ethanay
my keyboard recently stopped working after logging in. I will check
whether it is an accessibility feature and report back. The keyboard
behavior may be the result of a properly functioning feature, but the
lack of any communication/notification to the user that the feature is
active is certainly a bug (or at the very least a very important feature
request). Keeping my fingers crossed...

[Bug 198750] Re: audio cds make desktop things disappear

2008-05-17 Thread ethanay
this might not be fixed --

when I first boot, I have .gvfs file in my home directory.

if I try to load audio data into Audacity, it fails halfway through and
the .gvfs file disappears. All programs that depend on the link fail
(so far, Audacity and Brasero).
