It transpires that the problem is to do with the mobile broadband that many of us now use. Its compression methods are what mangled the files, though I have now moved from Vodafone ot T-mobile with none of the symptoms. You can close the bug I filed. Thanks. There is a message about not being able to extract them, so perhaps it's some package that is common to both Archive Manager and the Themes software and possibly not file-roller. I have just tried the same using the live CD (a CD verified as free from defects) with the same results, so it's definitely a bug rather than any installation problems. Yes, there is no problem with the commonly used website itself, which I used before with 8.10, and I also tried tar.gz files elsewhere on other sites with the same result to verify this. Although this is not a security matter, I do think it's not an unimportant one, because everyone uses Archive Manager at some point, and we're all in Ubuntu land prone to honing our desktop appearance, often involving these tar.gz files and art.gnome.org is a 'first port of call' it seems. Any of the window borders from the page below produce the result I get, except Agatha, which is a tar.bz2 file. http://art.gnome.org/themes/metacity?page=1 After downloading them try to open them with a double-click or drop them into the theme box via System Appearances Themes Oddly I've found this morning some of these files that I'd forgotten I had on a pen drive, and these copies oddly _do_ work, even though they're from the same site. Maybe that is a clue for you?
