2022-05-29 Thread Karl Schindler
i have a similar issue.
ubuntu 22.04 installed, nvidia 510 driver on desktop.
after boot, login using any application the screen freezes. the timing seems
random, sometimes earlier, sometimes later.
can only do ALT-PrtScr-B to reboot.
the strange thing is: after this reboot, the screen no longer freezes!

[Bug 1872053] Re: Local mail is never checked

2020-09-27 Thread Karl N. Redman
I'm just piping in here to say that the issue is based on how the
login(1) program is called during the authorization process. This is
beyond the scope of gui terminals and is even once more removed from the
shell.

I've outlined a more in depth answer here:
https://askubuntu.com/a/1278257/879293

Also, I've provided a bash function that you can add to your .profile
(assuming you use 'login shell' for your terminals) that will give you
something like the behavior that you (and me as well) were seeking
relative to this thread.

Best regards.

[Bug 1880620] [NEW] Fcitx input stalls GUI

2020-05-25 Thread Karl Kastner
Public bug reported:

Select Fcitx as input method, log out, log in again. The GUI (gnome)
becomes extremely sluggish, and does not react to keyboard input any
more after a couple of seconds. CTRL-Alt-Backspace luckily works. After
several attempts I managed to change the input method back to Ibus
before the GUI hangs. If I remember correctly, then the same problem
occurred on a previous release of Ubuntu as well.

[Bug 1825593] Re: Display scale not remembered when X11 Fractional Scaling is enabled

2020-05-19 Thread Karl Nicoll
Hi Daniel,

Thanks. `dpkg -s libmutter-6-0 | grep Version` indicated I was still on
the old version, turns out I had upgraded mutter, but also needed to
upgrade libmutter as well:

# apt upgrade mutter/focal-proposed
# apt upgrade gir1.2-mutter-6/focal-proposed libmutter-6-0/focal-proposed

I've run the upgrade and rebooted and the settings are now read
correctly (the screen layout and scaling were preserved after the
restart).

Nothing more needed at this point, issue appears fixed to me.

Thanks,

Karl

[Bug 1825593] Re: Display scale not remembered when X11 Fractional Scaling is enabled

2020-05-18 Thread Karl Nicoll
Hi Daniel,

Unsure if your response was aimed at me, but I can confirm that the
behaviour is still present for me and that neither of those criteria
apply to me. I'm using AMDGPU (AMD Radeon 5700XT) with three monitors
attached and fractional scaling enabled.

Additional Observations
===

* With Fractional Scaling enabled, but all three screens at 100%, display
layout is restored at startup.
* With Fractional Scaling enabled, but screen 3 (the 4k monitor) set at 125% or
150% scaling, the monitor layout and scaling are reset at startup.

If there's any more information you need, I'm happy to help, just let me
know what you need!

Thanks,

Karl

[Bug 1773207] Re: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tracker-2.0/libtracker-data.so.0: undefined symbol: sqlite3_bind_pointer

2019-11-26 Thread Karl Kastner
The file in /usr/lib and /usr/local/lib are both identical. I kept the
old one in a separate folder and it has the same sha1sum. But the file
in /usr/lib seems to be spurious as well, since it is not associated
with any package and variants with newer timestamp of libsqlite3.so.0
persists in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ and /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/,
Nautilus still works after having moved /usr/lib/ libsqlite3.so.0 into
quarantaine as well as well.

diff by the way also works also on binaries, it only echos "binary files
differ" for files that differ, instead of printing the actual difference
on screen.

Anyway, thanks for the tip to resolve the problem.

[Bug 1826415] [NEW] Videos do not play in presentation mode

2019-04-25 Thread Karl Kastner
Public bug reported:

It is not possible to play embedded videos in the presentation mode.
This affects PDF slides created with the beamer/multimedia latex
package. Initially, no controls are shown on the slide with the video.
In the normal mode, video controls appear when the video is clicked with
the mouse. However, in the presentation mode, evince goes to the next
page when one clicks with the mouse so that the controls do not appear
and the video can only be played by exiting the presentation mode.
Playing videos works fine in presentation mode with the okular PDF-
viewer.

[Bug 1797158] [NEW] Nautilus fails to show file transfer status when copying from NAS

2018-10-10 Thread Karl Lindheimer
Public bug reported:

When copying a file from a NAS using the AFP protocol the "pie chart"
graphic in Nautilus fails to display status of the transfer. Eventually
the file is copied to the Ubuntu system correctly.

This does not occur when copying from Ubuntu system to the NAS, in that
case the progress graph displays the file transfer progress.

[Bug 1786999] [NEW] bluetooth coupling is only possible in certain combinations

2018-08-14 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Initializing a bluetooth coupling on an Android device causes a
notification to be displayed in gnome-shell which doesn't display the
"confirm" or ~"ignore" buttons. When clicking on the notification (which
seems the only intuitive way to make the buttons visible) the
notification disappears and apparently selects to ignore the requests
implicitly. The user has to guess that.

Initializing the coupling from the Ubuntu side works find because the
confirmation has to be performed on the device.

Just experienced this problem with a Seagate Expansion Drive - In

but when trying to write to the file the popup appears saying read-only.
I tried the killall Nautilus and access is restored.

I didn't know this alternative, thanks for the info. However, the
extremely low quality of apport strikes here as well (selecting upload
causes the program to return immediately with return code 0 and no
output which is in conjunction with a missing verbosity switch just
inacceptable).

[Bug 1573728] Re: Files opened with gedit on command line no longer open within the existing gedit session

2018-01-19 Thread Karl Trygve Kalleberg
I see the same thing (17.10), gedit 3.22.1:

- if I maximize gedit vertically, gedit foo always opens a new gedit window
- if I maximize gedit horizontall, gedit foo always opens a new gedit window
- if I don't maximize in either direction, gedit foo opens in the existing
gedit window

I'm running Wayland, not sure if that has any impact.

This is still and issue in Ubuntu 17.10. Firefox opens all kinds of file

Can we set the referenced upstream bug to be tracked and mark it

[Bug 1739699] [NEW] opening a large number of videos with vlc causes delay and unresponsive vlc

2017-12-21 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. download a free MPlayer test file, like
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/MPEG-4/video.mp4 and move it into /tmp/a or similar
2. replicate it by running (requires a few GB of free space depending on the
deduplication facilities of your filesystem)

```
import shutil
for i in range(0,1000):
shutil.copy("/tmp/a/video.mp4", "/tmp/a/video-%d.mp4" % (i,))
```
3. open /tmp/a in nautilus, select all files and open them with VLC media
player through the context menu

Instead of putting all files in the VLC queue like Ubuntu 17.04's
nautilus did, an ~"opening in progress" dialog is opened blocking the UI
for almost a minute while consuming 100% of all CPU cores. If the above
is done during high memory consumption of another process hundreds of
VLC processes are started and the display manager crashes (but that's
another issues). If random playback is configured in VLC, it's ignored
and always the last video is played first.

The is no apparent reason why multiple files cannot be opened like in
17.04.

I only see one menu with 4 squares (I meanwhile switched to Xfce desktop
and nautilus might have different icons, but the attached screenshot
should clarify this statement) which I use to set the sorting.

[Bug 1701175] [NEW] sorting type and inverse sorting flag not persisted in home directory across restarts

2017-06-29 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Setting the sorting type (name, size, etc.) and the inverse sorting flag

2017-04-11 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Since users still have to get Bluetooth running manually following
http://askubuntu.com/questions/131570/how-do-you-make-ubuntu-accept-
files-sent-over-bluetooth because
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-user-share/+bug/1406108
is still not fixed[1] there's need for the `gnome-user-share` script
(usually `/usr/lib/gnome-user-share/gnome-user-share`). It's no longer
provided by `gnome-user-share` and `apt-file find gnome-user-share`
doesn't reveal any location where it could be now.

As alternative, a thought-through intuitive bluetooth setup that not
just somehow, but reliably works in all possible senses would be
appreciated.

back the instant he_she started Ubuntu and was confronted with such an issue...

[Bug 1672530] [NEW] Large amount of message "localhost systemd-udevd[25252]: Process '/bin/chmod 0666 ' failed with exit code 1." logged to syslog

2017-03-13 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

The message `localhost systemd-udevd[25252]: Process '/bin/chmod 0666 '
failed with exit code 1.` makes up more than 50 % of `/var/log/syslog`.
It is not useful without further information and either those should be
added, the message be suppressed or the reason for it be fixed.

[Bug 1467187] Re: allow usage of multicore implementations of compression tools

2017-02-19 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
> Not fixed at all, File Roller still uses only one core of my quad-core CPU...
Right, I was confusing this with `nautilus`' archive creation/compress feature.
I guess that parallelization depends on the compression algorithm used, but
`file-roller` doesn't even use parallelization for gzip for which there's a
parallel algorithm out for years, maybe decades.

Exact same issue with 3.20.2-1ubuntu5 on Ubuntu 16.10 amd64. Do you want
an `apport-collect` from me?

[Bug 1605397] Re: gnome-terminal doesn't return to its original size when unsnapping from the side of the screen

I have the same issue with `gnome-terminal`, but also other
applications, like `gnome-system-monitor`, on Ubuntu 16.10, so this
might be a more widespread issue.

This seems to be fixed in Ubuntu 16.10 based on simple observation (as

[Bug 1637122] [NEW] nautilus freezes while accessing an obexfs mount

[Bug 1632195] [NEW] eog won't load or display large jpg images

2016-10-10 Thread Karl Lindheimer
Public bug reported:

eog (image viewer) in Ubuntu 16.04 won't display large (~5.0 mb filesize

If an OpenVPN connection can't be established or used (grayed out menu

[Bug 1599941] [NEW] data disks created with brasero can't be read

2016-07-07 Thread Karl Lindheimer
Public bug reported:

I recently copied several directories from a hard drive rescued from a
dead computer to my NAS. I can open all of the files fine in Ubuntu. I
attempted to use brasero to burn the windows files to a CD and DVD.
Everything went through the proper steps, and I could see a burned area
on the DVD, however when the disk is inserted in Ubuntu or a windows
computer, it appears empty, except for 1 checksum file. When I used a
working windows computer to burn the data disk, the resulting DVD or CD
can be read fine in Windows computer, or Windows in VirtualBox under
Ubuntu, but not in Ubuntu itself. This is an insideous bug, because I
attempted to burn several Ubuntu Directories with photos onto a CD using
Brasero, and the CD's were read just fine in Ubuntu. The windows
program I used to burn the successful disk said that it was using the
Joliet filesystem.

[Bug 1571980] [NEW] Evince does not display PDF annotations

2016-04-19 Thread Karl Kastner
Public bug reported:

Evince does not display the content of PDF annotations. It only displays
an obtuse yellow symbol, but not the annotation text. This affects not
only documents where annotations were added with adobe reader to
existing pdf files, but also pdf files where the annotations are created
with the document, for example with pdflatex and the pdfmarginpar
package.

File to test:
http://tug.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/pdfmarginpar/doc/pdfmarginparexample.pdf

The annotations in this file are properly displayed in the Firefox
internal pdf-viewer. If downloaded and opened with evince, the
annotation text is not displayed on my machine.

This does not seem to be directly a problem of evince, but rather of one
of the underlying libraries, because the annotations are also not
properly displayed in okular.

[Bug 1557605] [NEW] Evince omits pages

2016-03-15 Thread Karl Kastner
Public bug reported:

Evince omits pages and swaps the page order when displaying the attached
document.
Evince (GNOME Document Viewer 3.10.3) displays incorrectly:

cover, 1, 3, 3 (repetition), 4, 16, 6, 7, 38, 9, 10-65

Acrobat reader 9.5.5 displays correctly:

cover, 1-65

I am not sure if this document violates any standards or is corrupted.
However, acrobat reader displays it correctly, i.e. in the way expected
by the user. Bursting and reconcatenating with pdftk creates a document
that is correctly displayed by evince.

This does not seem to be directly a bug of evince but rather of one of
the the underlying libraries, as okular displays the document with the
same faults.

[Bug 1545272] [NEW] reboot fails with "Failed to start reboot.target: Transaction is destructive."

2016-02-13 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

`sudo reboot` fails with

Failed to start reboot.target: Transaction is destructive.

Broadcast message from richter@richter-lenovo-IdeaPad-U410 on pts/1
(Sa 2016-02-13 13:36:30 CET):

The system is going down for reboot NOW!

which seems to be caused by an incomplete suspend as stated in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1441253 which
isn't a duplicate because the reason seem to be a btrfs issue there
which I don't suffer from.

I'd suggest to let the suspend time out, provide the user with the
information that a suspend is pending and might timeout or succeed (or
something similar, more useful than "Failed to start reboot.target:
Transaction is destructive.") so that reboot is possible again after
some time.

The issue should be fixed in the kernel as well, it makes sense as well
to handle this situation in `systemd` because assuming that the kernel
is always stable is naive and adding such a timeout improves stability
and better feedback usage.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 241604] Re: Maximum zoom in Evince is 400%

2016-01-31 Thread Karl Kastner
The minimum zoom level is annoying, too. The current minimum zoom level
is 10%, which makes it impossible to display high resolution pdf on a
single screen width. This effects PDFs produced from scans where the
density was set to a wrong value, i.e. a 600dpi scan labelled as 75dpi.
Evince should not rely on the density to be set correctly.

[Bug 1534279] [NEW] Gedit unconditionally overwrites .config/gedit/accels

2016-01-14 Thread Karl Trygve Kalleberg
Public bug reported:

The file .config/gedit/accels used to contain a way to customize
keyboard settings for Gedit. In earlier versions, it used to be possible
to modify this file (for example so that Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn switches between
tabs, which would be consistent with Gnome Terminal).

In the current Gedit version available in Ubuntu 15.10, the file
.config/gedit/accels is always overwritten with clean defaults every
time Gedit starts. It is therefore no longer possible to use this file
to customize keyboard shortcuts. Also, the Ubuntu version of Gedit does
not come with any UI that make it possible to customize keyboard
shortcuts inside Gedit either. Hence, there is no easy way at all to
customize keyboard shortcuts.

This was fixed in Gedit 3.12, ref
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=723626

Unfortunately, Ubuntu 15.10 uses a rather antique version of Gedit,
where this problem remains unfixed.

Since you've decided (for various good reasons, I'm sure) to bundle an
older Gedit, please consider backporting the fix referred to above.

[Bug 1527817] [NEW] unhelpful error message "Parsing filters is unsupported."

2015-12-18 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

  1. download

  2. try to extract the `.iso` file into `/tmp/`

[Bug 1524762] [NEW] Saving a document fails with error "Error opening file '[path to file]': Permission denied"

2015-12-10 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

`evince` seems to create a file with mode 0400 which doesn't make a lot
of sense. The directory is a regular directory created in `nautilus` and
doesn't cause any trouble with other applications (e.g. `libreoffice`

[Bug 1519387] Re: nautilus crashes when deleting a file on a cifs mount

2015-11-24 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter

At most related because the symptoms are different (the window disappears in my
case while `nautilus` freezes in the other) and in my case the crash is
triggered when deleting any file from a `cifs` mount, not just one named
`.trash_1000`.

[Bug 1467943] Re: system shutdown hangs if btrfs on file image (mounted via cifs) is mounted

2015-10-10 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
I can only reach the `systemd` debug shell randomly, i.e. the system
freezes either before I can press Ctrl+Alt+F9, right after it so that I
can't run `journalctl -ab > /root/journal.txt` or right after running
the command so that data isn't written to `/root/journal.txt` because
the system can apparently only be rebooted with Ctrl+Alt+SysRq+b so that
the data is never written to the filesystem (btrfs).

After 5 failures at different states I couldn't recognize any pattern
which causes the freeze. The start of debugging shell works consistently
well if the btrfs image isn't mounted.

[Bug 1502509] Re: Show disk utilization - feature request

2015-10-10 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
** Description changed:

- I think that it would be really good if the System Monitor displayed
- disk utilization among the things it already displays. This would be
- really useful in a line graph. And I have heard and seen many people
- wanting a feature like this so I think that it would be a really good
- new feature to implement.

[Bug 1492397] [NEW] Ctrl+H doesn't copy selected text into the "search for" text input at first invocation after other text has been replaced

2015-09-04 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce:

  1. write text and select a part of it
  2. press Ctrl+H and replace the text with different
text and close the replace dialog
  3. select another part of the text and press Ctrl+H

The text in the "search for" text input is still the selection of the
first replacement, but should be the current select. Closing the replace
dialog and pressing Ctrl+H again causes the
selection to be inserted into the text input.

[Bug 1492519] [NEW] add function to preserve in-memory content of externally modified files

2015-09-04 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Rather than forcing the user to make the decision whether or not to drop
changes which are preserved in memory in case the file was edited
externally, I'd be nice to allow the user to preserve those
modifications with a new function.

[Bug 1490781] [NEW] Add a button to permantently get next random image

2015-08-31 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Currently it's only possible to get the next random image with the
menuitem or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+M. It'd be
nice to have a trigger button which changes the function of the next
image button to get the next random image and the go back button to get

that with the menu item.

[Bug 1489632] [NEW] gedit fails to display line with 1000000 characters

2015-08-27 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce:

  1. start `gedit`
  2. produce a line with 100 characters, e.g. with `ipython` in
`gnome-terminal` where you can run `1 * 100` and select all output and
copy it
  3. paste into `gedit`

Parts of the line seems to be rendered over other parts of the line.
This doesn't occur with 10 characters. See attached screenshot for
an example.

[Bug 1489064] [NEW] filesystem column for used space both indicates absolute and relative space

2015-08-26 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

The column indicating the used space both indicates the absolute space
in form of the number label and the relative space in form of the
progress bar. This doesn't make sense and it'd be nice for the user to
be able to sort by relative and absolute used/free space. Thus, it'd
make sense to split the label with the number and progress bar into two
sortable columns.
