[Bug 2017027] Re: Sound device missing (monitor)

2023-05-03 Thread Keith Lewis
This bug also hit me in early April, on Jammy (Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS).
Settings->Sound suddenly had only the S/PDIF option; HDMI/DisplayPort
was gone, as well as the analog option.

Upgrading to Kinetic and then Lunar brought back HDMI/DisplayPort, which
is the device I need. The analog line output is still missing, as are
the analog mic and line inputs.

Just wanted to mention the bug affects the most recent LTS release, and
even the Lunar is still missing the analog devices.

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2018-07-06 Thread Keith David Winkler
I found that the "Workspace Indicator" was causing this problem for me.

https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/21/workspace-indicator/

Clean install of 18.04 on real hardware. Xorg session. Nvidia 1050 with
open source drivers. 2k resolution. Problem did NOT occur for two
weeks. Installed "Workspace Indicator" and problem occurred within 24
hours. It reoccurred once or twice every subsequent 24 hours.
Uninstalled "Workspace Indicator" and problem has not reoccurred for
four days.

The problem: gnome shell stops responding to all mouse *clicks* within
OS or on gnome shell components. Mouse cursor movement is still
possible. All keyboard navigation is still possible. Mouse clicks
begin to work again after 5 to 10 minutes.

[Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot

2017-06-17 Thread Keith Newman
Hans' observation that this is not impacting all of his machines is
consistent with my experience of this issue. I have three Ubuntu
machines and this is only impacting one of them. It is driving me nuts
because the machine that is impacted is my main laptop. My server and my
test machine which would be less of an issue to me as they don't get
booted so often are working fine. A classic example of Murphy's Law.

I open 'ContactSend File' and then a window pops up so I can select a
file to send. I select a file and hit the Send button. Nothing ever
happens after that. No error, no request to recieve on the intended
recipient's machine. I started Empathy via command line and still no
errors/feedback.

[Bug 1048341] Re: Banshee crashing after launching

2012-09-10 Thread Keith Drummond
Got the updates from the PPA.

Banshee launches. The first time everything ran very slowly, Banshee
kept freezing/unfreezing and the media keys on my keyboard would not
work. I closed Banshee after about 10 mins. Opened again and now it
seems to be working fine. Playing music now and it has not frozen or
crashed.

Do you require any logs or other information?

Thanks again for all the help.

[Bug 1048341] Re: Banshee crashing after launching

2012-09-10 Thread Keith Drummond
Have restarted the computer several times now and that freeze/unfreeze
effect has not reoccurred, it was just the first run after the updates.

Have added and removed a few extensions. Ticked/unticked various items,
tried running all the various extensions and there has been no crashes,
freezes or other instability I can see. Just been playing with playlists
and so on, and all seems stable.

[Bug 1013651] [NEW] Cannot paste into a usb device until every other opening.

2012-06-15 Thread Keith D. Lee
Public bug reported:

After downloading and installing Ubuntu Linux 12.04 LTS, I found that I
cannot cut and paste a file onto my USB external hard drive until I
close it and open it for a second time. This happens every other time;

[Bug 946915] Re: [color]: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in cd_client_connect_finish()

2012-06-09 Thread Keith Clark
Should note that this is actually in 12.10, not 12.04 as reported.
Also, the 'Display' section of Control Centre also does nothing at the
moment.

Another issue is that when I try to close the Control Centre, it just
restarts itself. Over and over again, until it crashed when I tried to
select 'Colour'.

[Bug 935755] [NEW] Evolution lost all mailboxes

2012-02-18 Thread Keith Norgrove
Public bug reported:

After upgrading Ubuntu to 11.10 I had to reinstall Evolution as it was deleted
bythe update. The new install picked up all my mail folders etc OK and I have
been using them for a couple of weeks. Then yesterday morning when I booted up
and opened Evolution all of the mailboxes have vanished. everything was fine
the previous night and the system shut down normally. When I connect to my
mailserver the mail appears to be downloaded but is not shown anywhere.
I have tries uninstalling and reinstalling using the Ubunto software centre and
it makes no difference.
I did create an archive with the old version but the new menus don't seem to
have an entry for archiving and retrieving archives.
advice welcome
Thanks

[Bug 648618] Re: evolution (e-calendar-factory) memory leak

2011-07-29 Thread Keith David Tyler
FWIW I did not have this problem prior to fresh-installing Natty x64.

My previous install started as a Lucid i686 UNE install (with the
netbook meta-package removed). I upgraded to Maverick, and then Natty
using Software Update tool.

When Gnome Classic session became too unstable, I trashed /usr, /, and
/var partitions, and installed Natty fresh from LiveCD. This time I used
x64 instead of i686 as I discovered my box was 64-bit.

I don't know if it was the fresh install, or the switch to a 64-bit
version, that led to the issue. But I recently found my computer lagging
heavily, memory pegged, CPU pegged, tons of it IOWAIT. System Monitor
showed e-calendar-factory as using 1.7 GiB of memory! Nuking it brought
it back to normal -- but it restarts automatically, so this is
inevitable.

BTW I do have a Google Calendar hooked into Evolution Calendar. But I
did before, too.

[Bug 754569] Re: Empathy does not support Google 2-Step Authentication

Next time you log in empathy can not connect, so you must go through the
process of getting a new password. Empathy seems to be the only piece of
software that I have this problem with.

Hi Pedro,
Sometimes the send/receive button doesn't work. I get around it by
restoring settings from a backup but it's very inconvenient. There
doesn't seem to be any good reason for it.

[Bug 708094] Re: Selecting Calendar button window size goes crazy (don't maximize, don't restore, etc)

2011-03-22 Thread Keith McClelland
I have this problem too on my HP Mini 110. Here are some more facts
about it.

1. The problem only occurs when Compiz is used; everything is fine without
enabling Compiz.
2. There is no problem until you enter the calendar mode. From then until you
exit the application, it exhibits the crazy motion of the title.
3. The crazy motion is that every time there is a mouse click anywhere in the
window, the window jumps to a different position and size. Actually it toggles
between two different ones on successive mouse clicks.
4. Wherever the mouse is when the window finishes sliding under it is the place
where the release of the mouse causes action; thus clever choice of where to
click can cause a deliberate action.
5. Pressing Alt-F10 (maximize) freezes the window in one of its strange
positions. You can kind of use the application in this position, but the title
bar and menu bar are off the top of the window.
6. Kill the application in any convenient way and restart it: you will be back
to normal until you go to the calendar again.

I hope this helps to find the problem. With more people using compiz in
Natty, this will probably start to annoy lots of people.

This is occurring on my system too on virtually every boot up. Only way
to restore correct settings is by killing nautilus. Have tried deleting
my nautilus folder, adding the delay, reinstalling, even tried the
elementary tweaked version of nautilus but the problem still persisted.

Current version of nautilus is 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1.3

[Bug 681670] [NEW] Rhythmbox dies after selecting Jamendo, Magnatune, Last.fm, and any radio station

2010-11-25 Thread Keith LeBrun
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Problem began after upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10.

Clicking on any of Jamendo, Magnatunes, last.fm or selecting a radio
station causes this app to immediately die without complaint. The
process is killed, and the GUI is removed from the desktop. Selection
from my music library - either from disk or from iPhone - works as
expected.

[Bug 672873] Re: users-admin GSettings schema missing

2010-11-10 Thread Keith
When I run 'apt-get install --reinstall libglib2.0-0' I get the following
error:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

When I enter 'evince' from the terminal I get: Glib-GIO-ERROR **: Setting
schema 'org.gnome.Evince.Default' is not installed
aborting...
Aborted

Could it be a problem with my install media? For the record, I
downloaded
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/maverick/release/ubuntu-10.10
-desktop-powerpc.iso and burned to a CD using Nero (following the
overburn instructions from one of the Ubuntu forums, since the image is
710 MB). The CD seemed to verify ok when I ran the verify disc. Would
it be worth a try to download and try reinstalling from a different
source? If so which source should I try?

Thanks again for the help.

me offline keith at ksmith.com as this is not in scope. You are having
a problem with Xnest which may have nothing to do with the display

against the dm. If you don't understand how this works this is a bug

Jochen,

You might try wdm. The interface is ugly, but you don't have to load
all the KDE stuff on the machine to run it, it's very light weight.

I've never used Xnest, but I'm thinking the problem is *NOT* related to
gdm/kdm/wdm. Perhaps some insight on the application of Xnest? 'Xnest
-query localhost' :).

Have you tested KDM with a normal xsession? ((CTL-)ALT-F2) login cli,
'X :2 -query localhost' ???

Some of the changes to the X libraries created all kinds of havoc with
VNC and others.

Patrick,

Your gnome-terminal and gnome-system-monitor problems are unrelated to
wdm. In fact I'm typing this from a WDM login on a thin client to a
gnome session and both gnome-terminal and gnome-system-monitor start up
just fine. I suggest you bring up an Xterm (ALT-F2, xterm, enter) and
run them from a cli to see what the error is or check your .xsession-
errors file.

[Bug 658121] Re: evolution calendar becomes evolution mail when notification applet is used

2010-10-11 Thread Keith Gillis
Ctrl+1 - Ctrl+5 do nothing and there is no View Window menu. I just
checked the changelog.

evolution (2.30.3-1ubuntu1) maverick; urgency=low

  * backport some changes from debian
- new version fixing a crash (LP: #602907)
  * debian/patches/01_ubuntu_signature.patch:
- add ubuntu signature to new account
  * debian/patches/02_fix_missing_include_for_composer.patch:
- add a missing include for composer to build
  * debian/patches/89_express.patch:
- remerged evolution express with great care
- fix impossibility to set keep mail on server for POP account
  (LP: #615023)
  * debian/patches/90_disable_deprecation_warning.patch: refreshed
  * debian/patches/91_git_fix_format_itip.patch: removed, included upstream
  * backport debian/patches/91_git_additional_chinese_translations.patch,
debian/patches/91_git_fix_untranslatable_list_editor.patch from trunk

I noticed the evolution express part and guessed that these changes were
evolution express. The gnome web site said that evolution express is
an effort to optimize evolution for
netbooks(http://live.gnome.org/Evolution/Art). I tried logging into a
new gnome desktop session and started evolution. Under a desktop session
evolution behaved normally.

I use a netbook so, I'm all for optimizing evolution for small screens,
but evolution express does not seem ready. There does not seem to be any
way to access tasks, and I don't see any way to change the privacy
setting on an appointment. The interfaces to some important features
seem to have been removed. I'm going to see if I can make evolution open
in it's normal mode even while I'm in an ubuntu netbook session. I think
for now the normal mode should be changed back to the default for
netbook sessions.

Ok, in the menu editor there were two entries for evolution, one that

everthings normal again. The package maintainers should consider

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-07-18 Thread Keith Edwin Smith
Steve,

First of all, thank you for all of your work with Debian and Ubuntu.
Without people like you there would be no alternatives.

Maintenance and Support are always important, and the gnome group is
notorious for goofing up functionality and regression in their releases.
None the less, XDMCP is kind of like a *CORE* functionality of the X
system, available in the earliest releases, and not that complex.
Gnome/GDM's decision to toss it out was stupid, like building a fancy
house in Phoenix (115 yesterday) without putting in an Air Conditioner.
Yea, it's just fine in January, but come July . . .

Ubuntu had a working GDM in prior LTS releases. LTS releases IMHO
should be highly functional, and fully regression tested. If a package
breaks regression that badly it simply should not be included.
Maintenance not withstanding, at the moment in Phoenix, I'd rather
have an Old Clunky A/C than none at all. In Ubuntu I'd rather have an
un-maintained GDM that does what it used to, than a Maintained version
that does not. It's not our fault... doesn't get it because the
package maintainers at Ubuntu _chose_ to put a broken gdm in play in a
Long Term Support release, that makes it impossible to upgrade from an
8.04 X-windows Terminal Server, without replacing core components
manually. Yuk.

This problem is fairly typical. Most developers don't actually use the
products they develop so they don't notice when they goof up something people
use. Problem is, now we have to hold our breath to see if:
1. The GDM developers are going to fix the product
2. Ubuntu will actually implement the upgrade in the 10.04 LTS release!

I'm sure eventually this will get resolved. In the mean time we'll go
down to Home Depot and grab a window A/C for the summer eh? :). It's
just the alternative LM's are so frakking ugly. . .

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-07-16 Thread Keith Edwin Smith
As Scott says and moreover. Ubuntu could have solved this trivially.
Ubuntu decided to package a broken version of GDM when an older
functional version exists that is totally compatable and already working
and in place in older versions of Ubuntu.

The purpose of an upgrade to an operating system is to *improve*
functionality not *remove* functionality. All they had to do was leave
the working GDM in place until the functionality was actually *improved*
in the newer version. The reason we use things like Ubuntu is because
we have an expectation that they have a vetting process to prevent stuff
like this from happening giving us a smooth upgrade process. When you
have a shop with 15 odd thin clients running X-servers, you upgrade, and
nobody can now use the system until you jump thru hoops and replace
packages and stuff, you kind of defeated the purpose of using Ubuntu in
the first place. . .

Overall the improvments for use on my laptop and netbook are pretty
stunning. It's just that one of my primary uses of a clean desktop
system is to run thin X-clients, which is now kind of broken out-of-
the-box. We are not complaining about gdm-2.30, we are complaining
that Ubuntu put it in the fragging long-term-stable distro *broken*.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-06-14 Thread Keith Edwin Smith
As a work around you can install wdm:
$ sudo apt-get install wdm
...
Select 'wdm' as your default manager

It's kinda ugly but it works, and you can put in a background with the
ugly square boxes and X style buttons

Then cd /etc/X11/wdm and edit wdm-config:

. . .
# Don't listen for XDMCP
! DisplayManager.requestPort: 0
. . .

Comment out the requestPort line with a '!' and restart.

[Bug 585972] [NEW] attachment not being properly recognized

2010-05-26 Thread Keith Grizzell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
evolution 2.28.3-0ubuntu9

I received an email that contains an attachment, but evolution seems
oblivious to the fact that it contains an attachment. When I open the
same email from the same email account and the same IMAP server via a
webmail interface (i.e. only the client email software was different),
it shows me the attachment just fine, hence I am reporting it as a bug
in evolution.

I have attached a text file containing the email message source.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-05-11 Thread Keith Edwin Smith
This is beyond nuts. I was weirded out on 9.10 when I lost the
configuration screens. Losing remote XDMCP is catastrophic to the point
it will likely have me sticking with 9.04. I can't think of any reason
why this would be undesirable, in particular when you have multiple
clients running multiple X-terminals. This needed to be corrected on
9.10, I was SURE it would be fixed in 10.04, now I'm screwed.

[Bug 80755] Re: extracting doesn't work right when the location entry is displayed

2010-01-30 Thread Keith Hughitt
Same thing here:

Karmic 32-bit
2.28.1-0ubuntu1

If I attempt to hit extract right away to extract to the default
location (my home directory) nothing happens. Going to the parent
directory and then back, however, fixes the problem.

[Bug 482820] Re: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' at startup

2010-01-22 Thread Keith Wilson
I get
** (rhythmbox:3731): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL'
failed

(different number) when I start rhythmbox in a terminal. It crashes frequently
when playing songs, and sometimes plays two songs at once.
I am not a programmer. so may not understand any replies to this post, but I
thought somebody ought to know!!!
Cheers
