[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown

2009-06-29 Thread lesshaste
OK here is the update.

After the poweroff and restart the Toshiba logo comes up (it's a Toshiba
Tecra A9) and then it goes straight to booting linux without ever
showing the grub menu as described above.

However, it seems that grub IS actually running invisibly when the
Toshiba logo is showing but it just can't get hold of the screen. I
tested this by using the down arrow and pressing enter to boot into
windows instead of linux.

So, whatever part of the system attempts to display the grub menu to the
screen doesn't work after a poweroff (-P), but does work after a restart
(-r).

Any ideas how to tackle this? Looks like maybe the BIOS is not
initialising something properly, at a guess.

[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu does not display after cold boot

2009-06-29 Thread lesshaste
A fix/workaround is to upgrade to grub 2. I have just tested this and
it works.

This is not exactly user friendly at present as I had to edit menu.lst
by hand after running the command suggested in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/Grub2Testing . Not only was there
the root/uuid problem but the script fails to find a suitable command
line at some point and creates lines with nonsense characters in them in
menu.lst.

'shutdown -h now' shows the shutdown behaviour I describe above. That is
grub does not load when I start up the computer afterwards.

'shutdown -r now' loads grub .

The power icon in the far top right on the gnome panel is the one I am
referring to. When I click on it I have the following options

Guest session, lock session, Log Out, Suspend, Hibernate, Restart,
Shutdown

This is the first install of linux on this laptop.

Best wishes,

[Bug 389930] [NEW] shutdown actually appears to hibernate

2009-06-20 Thread lesshaste
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

On my toshiba tecra a9 laptop in jaunty/gnome with all updates applied,
the shutdown option appears to actually suspend or hibernate. I am
guessing this is what happens as grub doesn't load when you resume the
computer.

seems. However, before we close this bug, why doesn't it load grub after

[Bug 283162] Re: gdmsetup crashed with SIGSEGV in g_file_load_partial_contents_finish()

2009-04-20 Thread lesshaste
This looks similar to the bug that just got closed here
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556458 (see in particular
Comment #24 onwards) which was marked as a duplicate of
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=545203 and then fixed.

There is a patch which has already been applied for intrepid and jaunty
apparently which can be found here
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=115443action=view. It's a
very small patch, could it be applied for hardy?
