2010-04-22 Thread mabawsa
Yes it is. Its a rather annoying bug that is a regression from Karmic.
1 Step to reproduce:
Switch the GDM to lets say Japanese. Log in as any other language and most (not
all) of the system has Japanese Menus.
Completely reproducible on all 4 of my computers, worked perfectly in Karmic.

2010-03-31 Thread mabawsa
OK a work around for this is to create a file in:
~/.icons/default/index.theme

Add the following lines

[Icon Theme]
Name = anything you want
Comment = anything you want
Example = anything you want
Inherits = YOUR THEME NAME

Where your theme name can be obtained from running gconf-editor under
the key

/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/cursor_theme

Restart compiz (Alt + F2 then compiz --replace)

Every time you change the mouse theme you have to remember to change the
file you have created.

2010-03-30 Thread mabawsa
Your Majesty (sorry I couldn't resist that one) If you switch to metacity
(press Alt-F2 type: metacity --replace) does he problem still persist?
You can switch back to compiz by using compiz --replace.

For me the cursor goes to comix regular in Compiz on the desktop but
displays my default cursor within applications. When I switch to
metacity it performs as usual.

I will tentatively mark this as a compiz bug, I will open a new bug if
metacity doesn't change the cursor behaviour.

[Bug 520261] [NEW] Gnome Clock Applet renders the Calendar incorrectly when the applet when Locations are visible.

2010-02-10 Thread mabawsa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

:~$ apt-cache policy gnome-panel

  Version table:

I have my panel on the left side of my screen and I have my clock applet
at the top of this. Everything renders correctly when I press the panel
of the Location drop-down is hidden. However when the Location drop-down
is visible it renders incorrectly. The top part of the calendar is
missing. I know its not a show stopper but its irritating. I have
attached two image files that illustrate the behavior.

2009-10-16 Thread mabawsa
I just upgraded to Karmic. There is a new xrand bug that stops gsd
loading and that plugin needs to be disabled; I should report a new bug
maybe. Anyway the keyboard plugin patch appeared to work as when I
enabled the plugin gsd started. However on subsequent restarts gsd
crashes (even with xrand disabled) so perhaps the fix needs further
testing. Or maybe its another bug.

This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'XI_BadClass (invalid Class parameter)'.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line

Thanks for your time Chris and Sebastien. Here is the new gdb file and my Xorg
log.
Unfortunately I don't have Karmic installed on the nx servers I have and as
they are calculation servers used by 5-6 users I don't want to install a
development version. I do have a spare machine which I will try to install
Karmic and test this on but this will take time.

OK I tried to follow the instructions and got the following attachment.
However even though the debugging symbols are installed (see the attached

[Bug 409621] [NEW] The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.

2009-08-05 Thread mabawsa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

The only side effect is that theming and icons display incorrectly. It has only
recently started to happen so there may be a regression somewhere.
After logging into freenx and Typing gnome-settings-daemon returns the
following:

** (gnome-settings-daemon:21810): WARNING **: Unable to start xrandr manager:
unhandled X error while getting the range of screen sizes
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadClass, invalid event class'.
  (Details: serial 155 error_code 133 request_code 131 minor_code 6)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Disabling the keyboard plugin stops the error and the themes load correctly.

[Bug 199245] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crash opening any window: BadWindow X error under Xvnc

2009-07-15 Thread mabawsa
This bug also happens when using a Freenx session (I will try it with VNC and
x11vnc later today). The only side effect is that theming and icons display
incorrectly. It has only recently started to happen so there may be a
regression somewhere.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Disabling the keyboard plugin stops the error and the themes load
correctly.

[Bug 366073] Re: Copying from FTP freezes

2009-06-26 Thread mabawsa
OK Sebastian can I ask a simple question.
What is the default FTP system of Ubuntu?
Gvfs-FTP backend? It should have the least bugs.
Your notions on what constitutes a strong FTP client have nothing to do with it.

This bug is NOT fixed in Jaunty as per the original bug report.
Please mark it as WONT FIX as marking it as fixed is dishonest.

Oh by the way you noticed I opened a new bug as per your instructions in
comment 12, don't reopen a closed bug because you have a similar issue
but open a new one. Sorry if this was inappropriate to follow your
instruction.

It pretty funny that the counting the time you have wasted on this bug
you could have had a properly fixed package in testing repos :).

[Bug 366073] Re: Copying from FTP freezes

2009-06-26 Thread mabawsa
yeah karmic is not the current release. The bug has not been fixed on the
current release 9.04.
Also every one of my ftp copy attempts fail on nautilus without Valentin's
patch.
Most users would also expect ftp to work in nautilus out of the box in the
current release.
All my FTP servers are passive and since fixing gvfs the connections work
perfectly.
So how do I go about nominating the fix for the CURRENT release?

[Bug 366073] Re: Copying from FTP freezes

2009-06-26 Thread mabawsa
U r being a bit silly now ;)
MS is a leviathan the joy of using ubuntu is that it moves fast when needed.
I assumed out-of-the-box FTP connections would be a desirable in the current
release and be part of the stability measure of a release (no matter what you
think of gvfs I like the way it integrates into the gnome shell).
OK I'll try to learn how to ppa this weekend.
As I have no clue how to nominate this for the current release except by filing
a bug report as Valentin did for Jaunty already, and you obviously have no
desire to try to fix this because of the extra work you should mark it as WONT
FIX. If I am successful in getting the ppa version I can then link to this.

What do you think Sebastien?

[Bug 366073] Re: Copying from FTP freezes

2009-06-26 Thread mabawsa
I am soo sorry you feel insulted. I was trying to lighten up the dialogue. I
think ubuntu is fantastic and the support is far superior to Microsoft as one
can actually become involved (thus the silly comment). I am fairly new to all
of this, but want to volunteer more having only used ubuntu for 18 months. It
has put the fun back into computing and I am trying to switch as many people as
possible into using Linux (almost 20 people now). However it is little bugs
like this that turn most users off, for example I think a similar bug or
regression in Windows explorer (a far less superior FTP client than GVFS FTP
backend) would be fixed post haste by Redmond.
I release that you and other developers are doing a Sterling job so please
accept my humblest apologies. I am looking forward to the ppa learning curve
ahead.

Thanks

[Bug 392381] [NEW] Copying from FTP in Nautilus gvfs FTP backend freezes (in Jaunty)

2009-06-25 Thread mabawsa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

This bug has previously been reported Bug #366073. It is fixed in Karmic.
The fixes outlined in the bug should be backported to Jaunty.
Opening up a new bug as per the request of Sebastien Bacher.

Summary of bug:

Actually there are 2 bugs in one, might be related:
First, when logging in to my FTP, the 1st attempt always fails and then logging
in works as expected. After that I can upload and delete files, but I can not
copy files from FTP to my laptop. It stays like the attached picture, even
after clicking the Cancel button.

[Bug 366073] Re: Copying from FTP freezes

2009-06-22 Thread mabawsa
This is an important bug as it basically stops FTP functionality in Ubuntu!
Anyway, here are the compile options I used to get FTP working:
sudo apt-get build-dep gvfs
apt-get source gvfs
tar -xzvf gvfs_1.2.2.orig.tar.gz
rm gvfs_1.2.2.orig.tar.gz
rm gvfs_1.2.2-0ubuntu2*
sed 's/ftp_connection_send (conn, 0, OPTS UTF8 ON);/ftp_connection_send
(conn, RESPONSE_PASS_500, OPTS UTF8 ON);/' gvfs-1.2.2/daemon/gvfsbackendftp.c
 /tmp/gvfsbackendftp.c
mv /tmp/gvfsbackendftp.c gvfs-1.2.2/daemon/gvfsbackendftp.c
cd gvfs-1.2.2/
./configure
make
sudo make install

I want to put this on a ppa so I tried pbuilder
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PbuilderHowto.
However it all got a bit greasy so if anybody can point me to a tutorial on how
to create these multiple debs from one source I will try again.

For now I have FTP capabilities again in Jaunty.

[Bug 366073] Re: Copying from FTP freezes

2009-06-22 Thread mabawsa
With all due respect Sebastien,

1 The bug I have was exactly the same as Valentin's. So if I open another bug
then it is a duplicate. Fairly pointless
2 The bug was opened on 9.04. So a fix has NOT been released; this is
misleading.
3 By default Nautilus handles FTP and it used to make a decent job of it. So
this should function by default in ubuntu. A strong FTP client is a matter of
opinion, I like the way gvfs-ftp backend integrates into the gnome shell. Most
of the time I use the command line for FTP'ing but many of the other people in
my charge do not. So I have had to fix about 10 machines today.
4 Karmic is alpha NOT a release, therefore why should I try it to fix a Jaunty
issue by upgrading to Karmic, and be ladened with a bunch of development bugs
for at least 2-3 months? (this is why I waited to upgrade to Jaunty till now).
5 The bug is so easy to fix. Indeed I want to create the debs for a ppa if
nobody else wants to fix it on the official release.

So I suggest you re-open the bug and help fix it for the official
release, or mark it as wont fix for Jaunty.

All best

Nope on evdev managed keyboards server-side cause all navigation keys to
map incorrectly.
kb101-us on server and evdev-us on the client causes the delete key to

For now as long as the client and server are kb101-us the fix works.
I have not tried the jp106 keyboard yet. I will do it as soon as I can.

I basically just open up totem, then run a Youtube search and the bug occurs.
I have tried switching down to nvidia's last driver also turning off compiz.
I cleared the ~/.gstreamer-0.10, everything works until I play my first
youtube video.
Then the rendering fails again. I attach the only file in the ~/.gstreamer-0.10
for your information. Maybe this can shed light on the problem.

[Bug 261012] Re: Dell XPS 1330 loud beep when resumeing from suspend

2008-09-02 Thread mabawsa
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 242713 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242713

I had the same problem. I disabled the 2-3 sharp beeps on resume by
system -- preferences -- power management

or from the terminal type

gnome-power-preferences

Then uncheck
Use sound to notify in the event of an error
under the General tab.

On my system I think the beep has something to do with a UVC error on
resume:

uvcvideo: Failed to query (135) UVC control 1 (unit 0) : -32 (exp.26)

The webcam works well though.

Hope this helps?

[Bug 199245] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crash opening any window: BadWindow X error under Xvnc

2008-05-02 Thread mabawsa
I have similar problems with vnc speed and the gnome-settings Daemon
crashing. To stop the message I not only had to disable the keyboard
plug in but the mouse plug in as well. The speed is still sluggish
compared to Gutsy though.

Re: [Bug 199215] Re: SD card does not mount Dell Inspiron 9300

2008-04-20 Thread mabawsa
After rebooting my laptop the SD-card reader now works. So I guess the last
round of updates contained the fix.

[Bug 199215] Re: SD card does not mount Dell Inspiron 9300

2008-04-19 Thread mabawsa
Here is what I get on the internal reader:

Start monitoring devicelist:
-
11:24:53.976: pci_1180_822_mmc_host_mmc_card_rca43356 added
11:24:54.175: storage_serial_0x208919aa added

Yay! The external reader has started to work after the latest round of updates!
For your reference this is the output from the external:
Start monitoring devicelist:
-
Start monitoring devicelist:
-
11:31:11.017: storage_serial_Radius_SD_card_MMC_SD_ABCD12345683_0_2 property
storage.removable.media_available = true
11:31:11.044: storage_serial_Radius_SD_card_MMC_SD_ABCD12345683_0_2 property
storage.partitioning_scheme = 'mbr'
11:31:11.105: volume_uuid_6161_3931 added
11:31:11.263: volume_uuid_6161_3931 property volume.mount_point = '/media/SD-01'
11:31:11.264: volume_uuid_6161_3931 property volume.is_mounted = true

I really do not know what changed in the updates to make this work.
However the internal reader still fails ti mount the SD card :(
