Vino has some dependencies with GNOME components, but seems to run fine on XUbuntu when installing out of the box. The only issue is the file /usr/share/applications/vino-preferences.desktop, as described above, which is provided by Vino right? I have something similar. I have no desktop icons at all, even not when starting Nautilus by going to the Home folder via the Places menu. But when starting Nautilus via the terminal, all of a sudden destop icons appear on my screen. It's a problem with more gnome packages; for instance in gnome desktop utilities, the utilities don't show up in the applications menu when you're running xfce4 (e.g. in XUbuntu).
