[Bug 1942432] Re: third-party applications freeze gnome-shell reproducibly

2021-09-03 Thread Nicolas Herzog
Thank you for the quick response.
I'm sorry for the work I generated. After reporting the bug, I tried another
display / window manager, respectively, and managed my system into a
non-working GUI.
I then did a backup and reinstalled Linux, now cinnamon is working well.
So you can close the bug in my view.

[Bug 1942432] [NEW] third-party applications freeze gdm3 reproducibly

2021-09-02 Thread Nicolas Herzog
Public bug reported:

On my Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS, I have reproducible freezes of gdm3
(3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.4) caused by third-party applications. The only thing I
found describing my problem was https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/39855 (passage
*GUI Glitches Causing Unresponsive WM or X11/Wayland*). This is exactly my
experience ("**an application stops responding and prevents you from entering
input with the keyboard or mouse to other application windows**"). Specifically:
- clicking on a hyperlink in (an open mail in) thunderbird freezes gdm3 at 90%.
- opening files via nemo (file manager) freezes gdm3 sometimes, regardless
which file type.
- libreoffice freezes gdm3 a lot when switching windows via alt-tab, but not
when I switch windows via super key.

Whenever a freeze occurs, the clock in my taskbar stops, the mouse and
keyboard still work, but no window responds. Switching to tty works.
Killing the last used application (e.g. thunderbird, nemo, soffice.bin)
via tty brings gdm3 to life again. The funny thing is that when e.g. I
open a link via thunderbird and gdm3 freezes, then I kill thunderbird
via tty and switch back to X, then thunderbird is gone but firefox has
opened the link.

I activated gdm3 debug output but could not find anything (I'm not an
ubuntu/X/gdm expert).
One freeze occurs somewhere between two **systemd-logind: got pause for 13:73**
in syslog_gdm3.log

I appreciate your reply.

> Are you using auto-logging?
On this machine I am using auto-login, yes.

> if you use password login and the keyring has the same secret then it's

As already stated, this behaviour has been observed both when the keyring has
been unlocked and when not.

> the first software to try to use it is going to trigger the prompting
This behaviour has also been observed for applications not requesting for
passwords.

[Bug 1928458] [NEW] inconsistent and unneeded password prompts

2021-05-14 Thread Nicolas Damgaard Larsen
Public bug reported:

On several occasions I have experienced that gnome-keyring prompts to be
unlocked when I believe it should not.
* I have Spotify installed as a .deb. When starting Spotify, on some occasions
gnome-keyring prompts to be unlocked, on others not. This behaviour has been
observed both when gnome-keyring has been unlocked in advance as well as when
not. I have not added my Spotify password to gnome-keyring.
* same behaviour as described above when starting Lutris. Did also not add any
Lutris related passwords to gnome-keyring.
* similar behaviour is observed with other applications where no passwords have
been added to gnome-keyring.

Whether or not I actually unlock the keyring, it has no functional
impact in these cases.

2020-12-14 Thread Nicolas CHAPIT
Hello, me again.

I just did another update with headers (actually 5.4.0-58-generic).
I put back notifications from settings before rebooting, and it seems to
working perfectly now.

I did apt autoremove after reboot, while I did it before the reboot the
first time (cf my post #7).

[Bug 1766775] Re: Notifications do not disappear

2020-11-18 Thread Nicolas CHAPIT
Hello, I think I just got this bug.

System: 18.04.5 LTS
Header's version: linux-headers-5.4.0-54-generic

I don't know what I did to reproduce it.

The gnome notifications can't be closed, even by clicking on the X or do
not disappear.

Right before, I was doing a system update with new headers. Then I
rebooted, and I got issues regarding pcieport for about 20 minutes.
Rebooted multiple times, and then, it went back normal except the
notifications...

I think you can deactivate the notification from the system's settings,
then reboot, it should not annoying you, but it's annoying to not having
the notification anymore :/

[Bug 1896102] [NEW] gnome-shell crashes together with emacs-gtk regularly

Public bug reported:

Regularly emacs-gtk crashes (reported separately in LP: #1896100) and
with it gnome-shell crashes as well. Since those two crashes happen at
the same time I am assuming that those two events are related. I don't
know what the causal relation is though.

[Bug 1869159] Re: Opening a pdf from Zotero in evince, I got "failed to load backend for 'application/pdf': libnss3.so: failed to load shared object mapping segment

2020-03-31 Thread Nicolas DERIVE
That's seems to be fixed in latest version, probably through this
modification:

  * d/apparmor-profile.abstraction:
Allow running dash/bash with inherited AppArmor profile.
GDesktopAppInfo in GLib 2.64.x uses a one-line shell script to carry
out some setup when launching .desktop files, for example as a
URL handler. (Closes: #954013)

Zotero is a bibliography tool (https://www.zotero.org/). When I double
click on a pdf in it, it opens the pdf file using the default system
tool, here evince, and triggers that evince error.

Here is the tail of journalctl -b 0 output with the relevant lines:

[Bug 1841646] Re: White text on white background for HTML e-mail

2020-01-10 Thread Nicolas Damgaard Larsen
I'm not expecting this to be fixed in 18.04 as I imagine that this issue
considered low importance since it can be worked around by changing
theme. Add to that the fact that the devs and package maintainers
probably are pretty busy after the 19.10 release and working towards
20.04. The be fair, this is not really a game breaking bug but more an
inconvenience.

@Christopher Howard (howardtopher):
I'm sure you're welcome to contribute a bugfix. Seeing as this is such a quick
and easy fix this should be no problem for you.

For those (like me) who prefer to stick to the dark theme, here's how to
downgrade the needed packages fairly safely.

Create a file called libwebkit2gtk-downgrade under /etc/apt/preferences.d/
Paste the following into it:

Package: libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37
Pin: version 2.20*
Pin-Priority: 550

Package: libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18
Pin: version 2.20*
Pin-Priority: 550

Package: gir1.2-webkit2-4.0
Pin: version 2.20*
Pin-Priority: 550

Package: gir1.2-javascriptcoregtk-4.0
Pin: version 2.20*
Pin-Priority: 550

>From a terminal run:

sudo apt-get install libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37=2.20.1-1
libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18=2.20.1-1 gir1.2-webkit2-4.0=2.20.1-1
gir1.2-javascriptcoregtk-4.0=2.20.1-1

This won't remove the *-desktop package.

[Bug 1827059] [NEW] Gnome-shell won't lock screen anymore

2019-04-30 Thread Nicolas Chambrier
Public bug reported:

When I press the lock shortcut Gnome Shell won't lock screen: instead it
"blinks" (top bar disappears for a moment) and comes back, no lock
screen or password asked. Closing screen (laptop) does the same but I
still get low consumption, so hibernation seems to be working, but there
is no password asked after opening.

I get this error in dmesg:

```
[10413.140792] gnome-shell[28745]: segfault at fbc8 ip
```

I tried to "apt-get install --reinstall gnome-shell", or "uninstall
--purge" it and install back, but nothing works. It has started right
after an update 2 or 3 days ago, supposedly related to 19.04?

I obviously never disabled the password on lock screen :) by the way
it's working perfectly if I chose standard GNOME desktop on login.

** Description changed:

  When I press the lock shortcut Gnome Shell won't lock screen: instead it
  "blinks" (top bar disappears for a moment) and comes back, no lock
  screen or password asked. Closing screen (laptop) does the same but I
  still get low consumption, so hibernation seems to be working, but there
  is no password asked after opening.

  I get this error in dmesg:

  ```
  [10413.140792] gnome-shell[28745]: segfault at fbc8 ip
  I tried to "apt-get install --reinstall gnome-shell", or "uninstall
  --purge" it and install back, but nothing works. It has started right
- after 19.04 update.
+ after an update 2 or 3 days ago, supposedly related to 19.04?
  I obviously never disabled the password on lock screen :) by the way
  it's working perfectly if I chose standard GNOME desktop on login.
[Bug 1813674] Re: gnome-shell freezes unexpectedly and crashes afterward killing all other applications
2019-01-29 Thread Nicolas Göddel
Sorry, I don't want to work without all of these extensions until the
very same crash happens again. Some of them are essential to work
flawlessly.
Also I've got a .crash-file here with 180 MB and there is a .uploaded-
file beneath so I thought it was already uploaded to launchpad. I called
`ubuntu-bug gnome-shell`, then it collected some information and opened
launchpad to file the bug. So the new bug ID is the one in the title I
guess. I also found all my uploads using my whoopsie-ID and here is the
link to the file: https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/1655e342-234c-11e9
[Bug 1813674] [NEW] gnome-shell freezes unexpectedly and crashes afterward killing all other applications
2019-01-28 Thread Nicolas Göddel
Public bug reported:
There were many programs open as the crash occurs. There were lots of
terminal windows, thunderbird, firefox, pidgin, gedit, thunar, nemo,
synergy, transmission, solar, nextcloud and GNOME system monitor and
maybe more open. Then I was opening a popup window and the shell froze
except the mouse cursor which was responsive as always.
After a while the system presents me a fresh gnome login screen. Very
annoying...
I saw many segfaults from "Chrome_~dThread ... error 6 in libxul.so" in
dmesg afterwards although I did not start any chrome or chromium
process.
[Bug 1773959] Re: High CPU usage by gnome-shell when only running gnome-terminal
2018-12-27 Thread Nicolas Göddel
After years of high CPU usage with gnome-shell and not finding the
issue, I finally found this bug report, disable showing the seconds of
the clock in the top panel and now the CPU usage is between 0-1% instead
of 40% and more. What the heck? Thank you!
Still clock_gettime is active 71% of the time but the overall usage is
no minimal. Maybe my battery will last longer now.
[Bug 1787925] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in meta_bug()
2018-08-21 Thread Nicolas Göddel
I just wanted to help but when the bug reporting system does not work
correctly I have no idea what to do. I often get SIGABRTs and similar
crashes with gnome-shell but the most time these bugs were already
reported and I only click on "This bug affects you". In the past I also
created some bug reports but these seem to be fine.
Maybe the bug will be gone when I have updated to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I
just had no time for this until now.
[Bug 1787925] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in meta_bug()
2018-08-21 Thread Nicolas Göddel
Hi Daniel. I used the command `ubuntu-bug gnome-shell` to send this bug to
launchpad. If I try this with the crash file instead it only opens a window
with some crash details but there is no possibility to upload anything.
Going to errors.ubuntu.com only tells me that I am not logged in. After logging
in it says: "No errors have been reported from this system"
Can I upload the 45 MB crash file somewhere else? I don't know if it contains
sensible information.
Reproducing the issue seems not to be possible because this was an error
I never saw before and it just happened without doing anything
spectacular.
[Bug 1761554] Re: [bionic] Extended characters in GNOME screen keyboard don't get entered
2018-06-09 Thread Nicolas Schmitt
I feel like the update im-config 0.34-1ubuntu1.1 bugged out ibus-mozc on
Wayland.
I'm getting crashes in LibreOffice---and in some other applications
(Gnome shell search bar), the candidate window is not showing up.  It
was definitely working at some point before this update.
Could be that I'm wrong about this update causing this, I'm not really
sure ... Someone else experiencing similar issues?
[Bug 1715811] Re: GDM crash loop Ubuntu 17.10 (Intel)
2018-02-18 Thread Nicolas Diogo
same error for me while using a X1 lenovo - Intel® HD Graphics 520 (Skylake GT2)
I original upgraded from 17.04 to 17.10, and I had this very same problem.
To validate, I have installed fresh 17.10.1
I have not used any of the config $HOME configuration files as I only restored
the files that I use for work.
yet, the same error persists
the only error that I found in the logs is shown below:
There are suggestion that one should add 'nomodeset' to the kernel
(/etc/default/grub)
would this be the solution for now?
thanks,
[Bug 1614593] Re: gimp freezes at end of cage-base transform
2018-01-24 Thread Nicolas Frank
As of today, it is not working. Using 17.10 on 4.13.0-30-generic and
gimp:
GNU Image Manipulation Program version 2.8.20
git-describe: GIMP_2_8_18-91-g91b41bba51
using GEGL version 0.3.20 (compiled against version 0.3.14)
using GLib version 2.54.1 (compiled against version 2.51.2)
using GdkPixbuf version 2.36.11 (compiled against version 2.36.5)
using GTK+ version 2.24.31 (compiled against version 2.24.31)
using Pango version 1.40.12 (compiled against version 1.40.3)
using Fontconfig version 2.11.94 (compiled against version 2.11.94)
using Cairo version 1.14.10 (compiled against version 1.14.8)
Sad to see that more than one year on this is still an issue.
[Bug 1733793] [NEW] Evince reports wrong zoom percentage number on Wayland
2017-11-22 Thread Daniel Nicolas
Public bug reported:
The application struggles on zooming at any zoom levels if I'm running
it on Wayland. Basically Evince fails at zooming correctly on all PDF
documents. Whenever the zoom is set to Fit Page, Fit Width, or
Automatic, the counter displays wrong percentage at 0% and Ctrl + +/- or
Ctrl + Scroll Up/Down doesn't work. If I try to zoom to 50% or 200%
using the presets on the drop-down menu, all pages in the document
disappears and the counter now shows "-nan%".
Encountered on Ubuntu 17.10 in Wayland
GPU is Radeon HD 6410 and uses open-source drivers
[Bug 1399476] Re: 0.2.0: DAVS: need to click on breadcrumb bar to show directory content
2014-12-16 Thread Nicolas Laplante
I think this bug is related to gvfsd. In the terminal, I tried to go to
the mount place for the owncloud share /run/user/... ... ... and issued
a ls command. It hung, I hit some key and it listed the directory
content. So, I don't think this is related to pantheon-files. I see
there have been updates to gvfsd in newer Ubuntu releases but those
weren't backported to Trusty so I don't know if this has been fixed.
** Project changed: pantheon-files = gvfs (Ubuntu)
I upgraded to empathy 3.12 via the following PPA and, for now, I don't
I just added the PPA to my system, sudo apt-get update  sudo apt-get
 Nicolas,
 Where does the need to *have* a key for nbsp come from?
Because unlike in English most French punctuation symbols require a
space (sometimes a short space) before. And if it's not a non-breakable
space apps will perform line breaks at the wrong position and you'll end
up with orphan sumbols at line starts
system with French inputs or outputs)
Lack of non breakspace on French layouts on some OSes is such a basic
problem OpenOffice/LibreOffice had to hardcode a nbspc combo but that
does not help when writing in you MUA, your browser, your IM client, etc
 Isn't a compose
 combo more appropriate and less error-prone?
Compose is not appropriate for basic symbols you need to write pretty
much any correct sentence in the target language. And adding a specific
input method for one symbol just because some people can't live with the
modifier ISO chose for level 5 is disproportionnate.
[Bug 221112]
2014-05-06 Thread Nicolas-mailhot-laposte
(In reply to comment #66)
 Regarding the voting, is there generic popular Linux-oriented site in
 France? Like slashdot.org or smth...
There is a popular  Linux-oriented site in France (linuxfr.org) and the
final ajustments of this layout were done after discussion on this site.
I realise there is a vocal minority that does not like some of those choices but
1. the other alternatives used in the ancestors of this layout generated a lot
more hate mail
2. because I knew there was no choice everyone would like spacebar layout is
modular (and I'm the person who modularized it as part of the creation of this
layout). People can choose the previous behaviour if they want and a few other
possibilities were added as part of the modularization
3. so far no one proposed any better option appart from removing symbols which
are necessary to write proper French (arguably proper French is not the same as
C code). It's a lot easier to clamor for removal of the bits you do not use
than to try to design a general-purpose solution without cutting corners
[Bug 221112]
2014-05-06 Thread Nicolas-mailhot-laposte
(In reply to comment #71)
 And even if we wanted to please those apps, we mayb be able to without
 adding a new modifier (Level5) and a key for it -- again, see (comment #46).
I'm pretty sure some of the other spacebar configurations available as
xkb options do not require level5. They are not the default for fr(oss)
because without level5 it is too easy to type a nbspc by mistake and
random nbspc everywhere breaks lots of things (as reported by fr latin9
users).
 If no agreement can be reached, would it be possible to have the old layout
 accessible, even under another name?
The old layout was never removed and kept its historical name (fr
(In reply to comment #54)
 So, finally, is everybody happy with me removing that line:
 include level5(rctrl_switch)
No, just didn't see the point of restating what has already been written
before
A level 5 map needs a level 5 switch, iso defined right ctrl as default
level 5 switch so there is no better option available, and users who do
not care about the fifth level can choose another spacebar variant since
they are configurable.
 Breaking the very standard behavior of right control
It does not break the very standard behavior of right control any more
than altrgr breaks the very standard behavior of right alt
It's exactly the same mechanism as endorsed in other official French
Also happens when a mounted share start to behave strangely and zombies
a process with an open file on that share.  And since the message is
modal desktop-wide, and loops indefinitely, and the process can't die,
the only solution is to CTRL+ALT+F1 and reboot from there. (of course,
you loose anything that can't be properly shutdown from CLI)
[Bug 1221367] [NEW] scroll-method set to two-finger-scrolling by default, even if the hardware does not support it
2013-09-05 Thread Nicolas Delvaux
Public bug reported:
On an up-to-date Saucy, I'm no longer able to edge scroll.
There is a Two fingers scroll box in the Mouse  Touchpad panel. It is
checked by default but it is also grayed out (since the hardware does
not support multitouch), so I can't disable it.
On Raring, the box is still grayed out but it is unchecked by default
(edge scrolling was the default).
My only solution on Saucy is to install dconf-editor and manually change the
value of org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.touchpad.scroll-method.
This is not user friendly.
Two fingers scrolling is a sane default, but it should fallback to edge
scrolling when the touchpad can't support it.
ensure you have the latest BIOS version for your hardware, as sometimes
[Bug 1093325] Re: Lowest brightness setting renders screen black
2013-05-01 Thread Nicolas Joyard
I can confirm this issue on my UX32VD running Ubuntu 13.04.
However I don't know how this issue could be solved. The BIOS tells us
the maximum brightness value accepted but the minimum accepted value is
always 0. The actual behaviour of the different brightness values is
decided by the hardware, that means we have no way of knowing whether 0
means backlight off or minimal backlight on a specific machine, unless
by maintaining a list of hardware that turns backlight off when
brightness is 0.
[Bug 1175069] [NEW] Enable brightness scaling on different hardware models
2013-05-01 Thread Nicolas Joyard
Public bug reported:
Using Ubuntu 13.04, gnome-settings-daemon 3.6.4-0ubuntu8.
Different hardware have different brightness scales, for example :
- ranges are different ('max_brightness' value)
- some hardware turns backlight off when brightness is 0
- some hardware have a linear scale, some do not
For example, on an EeePC 1215N, the brightness ranges from 0 to 8 and
changes are nearly linear (the increase between 0 and 1 seems similar to
the increase between 7 and 8). On a Zenbook UX32VD, the brightness
ranges from 0 to 100, with 0 turning the backlight completely off, and
changes are a lot less linear (the increase between 1 and 2 seems
similar to the increase between 90 and 100).
It would be nice to allow configuring a different scale on different
hardware so that brightness changes seem more linear.
[Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME
2013-02-27 Thread Nicolas M.
As reported before, all the “.goutputstream-xx” files are temporary
files that GLib uses in file write activities. However, these buffer
files aren't deleted when an operation was cancelled. Currently, a fix
was committed for this bug (see #104).
Now, let's focus on the other part of the problem. On every session
close, LightDM needs to clean ~/.Xauthority. According to #28, there can
be lines in .Xauthority that shouldn't be erased, though the last line
seems to stand for the current session and should be deleted when the
session is closed. I don't know well how it works, but some process
(most likely XAuth) is called to remove the last cookie of .Xauthority.
It works fine when you only close your session, but when you shutdown
from an open session, it looks like LightDM doesn't take time to close
it properly before shutting the whole system down. o_O
That results in a “.goutputstream-xx” containing all the ”permanent”
cookies of .Xauthority. If you delete .Xauthority, these permanent cookies will
disappear, so you will only get null-sized “.goutputstream-xx”... and a
much lighter .Xauthority on next reboot. ;-) And it seems to cause no other
problems, according to
[Bug 221112]
2013-02-22 Thread Nicolas-mailhot-laposte
(In reply to comment #39)
 So, lads, with configurable nbsp - is there any solution that would make you
 all reasonably happy?
Is there a way to make the spacebar more neutral *except* for the
combinations that trigger something else than space? The main complain
seems to be that some apps want to grab space combinations (which is a
really stupid idea IMHO) so can xkb work ass passthrough except for the
specific combos used for nbspc?
unmount share folder... i try the solution of Kanehekili (jentiger-
+1 for #24 and #52 this solved the issue for me while leaving auto-login
Did not tried to disable auto-login, so I don't know whether it would
have solved it as well. But I doubt it, because for me, freevo was the
culprit.
