[Bug 2043716] [NEW] Desktop freezing and slowing down when multiple apps running

2023-11-16 Thread Ross Gammon
Public bug reported:

This machine is being used a lot to cast to Chromecast using Chromium.
Some days Chromium is regularly freezing every 10 minutes or so. It is
necessary to restart the computer to get casting again. Regularly, the
freeze causes the "force close" or "wait" pop up to appear. If I am
quick to react, I can quit Chromium and a reboot gets things going
again. But if I am too slow, sometimes the whole desktop freezes
including the mouse and I need to Alt-SysRq+B.

If I am casting and during a boring bit I want to check my emails, then
running Thunderbird causes the whole system to slow down, and the
casting to reduce resolution and only update the screen every 10 seconds
or so.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help diagnose the
problem.

My system was dist-upgraded from Impish; I already have
libpipewire-0.3-common and pipewire-media-common and gstreamer
installed; I tried deleting the gstreamer cache as Janghou described.
None of these produced a fix, and I am getting syslog errors like the

[Bug 1961523] [NEW] Removable media is separarted from nautilus

2022-02-20 Thread Lex Ross
Public bug reported:

Upon opening inserted USB stick with nautilis using notification window
or directly in nautilus window the dot in the dock appears next to the
USB stick icon and not the file manager icon. This is different from
default GNOME behaviour that displays the dot next to the file manager
icon regardless of the location opened.

For one thing, to have a dot next to USB device is good in terms that it
indicates clearly that the device is mounted. On the other hand, this is
very confusing as the dot jumps from file manager icon to the USB stick
icon in the dock back and forth simply by changing location in the same
nautilus window. The very first time that happened I just lost my
nautilus window with the USB stick location opened and could not find it
until I hit the Super key to call the Activities menu.

It took me a while to figure out that my nautilus window had been
detached from file manager and re-attached to the USB stick icon in the
dock.

Since it is the nautilus process owning the removable media, and the
window the user interacts with belongs to nautilus app, I would expect
the dock to comply with the GNOME behaviour and to display the dots
corresponding to nautilus windows next to the file manager icon, and not
jump them around.

[Bug 1961453] [NEW] ubuntu-dock crashes nautilus

2022-02-18 Thread Lex Ross
Public bug reported:

Right-clicking on nautilus pinned to the dock displays nautilus bookmars
shall at least one nautilus window is open. This is very convenient and
is expected behaviour from Unity dock.

Clicking on the bookmark however crashes nautilus with segmentation
fault. Confirmed on Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04 LTS.

[Bug 1961452] [NEW] [Wayland] Super + nubmer doesn't switch windows

2022-02-18 Thread Lex Ross
Public bug reported:

In Wayland session using Super+ number key does not switch to the window
if the app is not pinned to the dock. Espetially when the Settings is
unpinned and is being launched as well as GNOME Terminal. It mostly
affects the Super+8 and Super+9. Even the Trash can be affected by this.

Under X.org session everything works fine. Except that the numbers are
not displayed on holding the Super key and aren't displayed properly no
matter what the session is, X.org or Wayland.

[Bug 1876257] [NEW] "Ubuntu on Wayland" Login Option Sometimes Disappears

2020-05-01 Thread Ross Rhodes
Public bug reported:

Recently I upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS to 20.04 LTS, which is now
running gdm3 version 3.34.1-1ubuntu1.

Before upgrading, "Ubuntu on Wayland" would always be an option for the
drop-down menu at the point I'm prompted to enter my login password.
This is my default setting, since other options do not work with my
display.

Since upgrading, "Ubuntu on Wayland" sometimes appears and sometimes
does not when I boot my machine. I would expect to see this option all
the time. No pattern in appearance has yet been identified. The only
workaround I have for now is to reboot my machine X (usually two or
three) times until "Ubuntu on Wayland" appears.

When I have successfully logged in under "Ubuntu on Wayland", I can see
"WaylandEnable=false" commented out in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf as expected
and I have made no alterations to this file.

[Bug 1798053] Re: Click on the back icon in gnome-software don't work

2018-10-17 Thread Ross Gammon
Today (after previous ISO rebuild), gnome-software allowed me to install
a snap (picard this time), and after installation the buttons changed to
launch, remove etc. I was able to launch the application, and after I
quit it, the back button in gnome-software took me to the front page.

Either it was a glitch, or something was fixed for this release
candidate.

2018-10-16 Thread Ross Gammon
I see this also in a live Ubuntu Studio session. I installed
AnimationMaker (snap). The install button stays active after
installation. I ran the Animation app from the menu - all worked fine.
Going back to Gnome Software, the Back button does nothing. All other
buttons and menu icons work, including the Install button (which should
not really be active - it does give a "this app is already installed"
error message when clicked though).

[Bug 1743503] [NEW] No wayland session option

2018-01-15 Thread Todd Ross
Public bug reported:

Per the release notes, Wayland is now the default display server in
Ubuntu 17.10. Exciting.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtfulAardvark/ReleaseNotes

I don't appear to be running Wayland. Boring.

todd@todd-ab28d3:~$ loginctl
   SESSIONUID USER SEAT TTY
c2121 gdm seat0/dev/tty1
 3 1000 todd seat0/dev/tty2

2 sessions listed.
todd@todd-ab28d3:~$ loginctl show-session 3 -p Type
Type=x11

This is a clean install with no proprietary graphics drivers.

todd@todd-ab28d3:~$ lspci | grep -i amd
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Fiji
[Radeon R9 FURY / NANO Series] (rev ca)
01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Fiji HDMI/DP Audio
[Radeon R9 Nano / FURY/FURY X]

I've attached the full journalctl log in case there's anything useful in
there. No wayland hits anyway.

[Bug 1726262] Re: 17.10 - flickering overlay patterns in gnome-terminal

2018-01-12 Thread Todd Ross
This is happening to me too. It's HUGELY distracting when trying to use
2, 3, or more terminal windows.

I have 3x U2711 monitors hooked up via display port to a R9 Fury, so
hardware doesn't seem to be a commonality.

Thanks for the Gnome Profile Terminal transparency workaround.

[Bug 245716] Re: file-roller puts temporary files in the home dir instead of /tmp

2017-07-17 Thread Donald Dwane Ross
I Deleted the ~/.cache/.fr-* files and saved 117GB on a 480GB SSD drive. My
system had gone down with less than 500mb in free space after the last view zip
file crash and my system would no longer let me log in to my main account
(Constant re login attempts). I had to use the log in for fixing the system at
the startup prompt and the system came up to Debian not Ubuntu 16.10. I
Timeshifted back 2 days to get back to Ubuntu.
May need to look for a different file archive program, this is a big drive
eater after a crash.

[Bug 1663346] [NEW] Gnome software freezes after selecting quit

2017-02-09 Thread Ross Gammon
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Studio Xenial 16.04.2 ISO running a live session on a laptop
without battery.

1. Select software from the menu
2. No apps shown in "All".
3. Click on "Installed". No apps shown, but "Waiting" circular wheel is
spinning.
4. Go to terminal and "apt-get update".
4. Give up waiting for installed apps to show up in Gnome Software.
5. Select "Quit" from the Gnome software menu > Software freezes (wheel icon
stops spinning) and remains open.

The application window should close when you select "Quit", but it
doesn't. Instead the application appears to freeze.

[Bug 1568410] Re: Double-clicking .desktop file makes nautilus show bogus file

2016-04-11 Thread Lex Ross
Thank you Sebastien for pointing this out. My understanding is that as
of now the old version of nautilus is paired with new GNOME desktop,
making this bug specific to Ubuntu. There is no problem with native
GNOME desktop or the Ubuntu 14.04 so I am not sure what upstream is
supposed to work on. I'm afraid that mixing GNOME software is specific
to Ubuntu, and the bug is the result of that integration. Correct me if
I'm wrong. Anyway, the upstream bug report follows:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=764891

Thank you for your time an co-operation. And, is there a way to
integrate the two bug report systems I wonder so that to make it a sort
of "Report to Bugzilla" button for Launchpad bugs?

[Bug 1568410] [NEW] Double-clicking .desktop file makes nautilus show bogus file

2016-04-09 Thread Lex Ross
Public bug reported:

When double-clicking a .desktop file in nautilus, bogus file briefly
appear and the original .desktop file "jerks" because of that. This
behaviour is quite annoying. Try unpacking tor browser bundle for
instance, navigate to tor-browser-en-US directory in nautilus and
double-click Tor Browser icon (the .desktop file). The file briefly
appears, marked as no read/write access (the little lock and cross icons
attached). I could not catch it with screen capture to see what it was
but you could see it for yourself. I believe that this is a temp file.
To verify, follow the steps below.

1. Make sure nautilus is configured to hide hidden files and that you can
reproduce the bug as has been described to this point
2. Leave nautilus window open, launch terminal and create a file named .HIDDEN
in tor-browser-en-US directory (the directory active in nautilus)
3. Double-click Tor Browser icon once again in nautilus

Now you should be able to see the file in question and look up its
properties in nautilus (see attached screen shot)

4. Return to the terminal and run 'ls -la' command to see that the file isn't
really present in the directory.
5. Refresh nautilus window with F5 button to return to normal

I believe this behaviour in nautilus is wrong but have no idea how to
fix it. Any idea?

[Bug 1487859] [NEW] MPEG4 .ts files are recognized as text/vnd.trolltech.linguist and .dvr files as video/mpeg

2015-08-23 Thread Lex Ross
Public bug reported:

I record DVBT2 TV shows as a set of two files, one is the .ts MPEG4
transport stream and the other is .dvr binary file containing EPG
program description. On my Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS desktop those are
recognized as follows.

In Nautilus, .ts files are always mapped to text/vnd.trolltech.linguist
file(1) command reports them as either FoxPro FPT or data files

Nevertheless those .ts files are being played correctly when dropped
into Totem window.

Program description .dvr files are mapped to video/mpeg in Nautilus,
while file(1) command reports them as MPEG sequence, v2, program
multiplex. The only exception is info.dvr file not specific to any
program and used by the TV set, which is mapped correctly to application
/octet-stream in Nautilus and is reported as data by file(1) command.

Attached are the samples of the problematic files recorded by the TV
set.

[Bug 410288] Re: Nautilus does not handle FTP timeouts well

2015-03-05 Thread Ross Lagerwall
See the bottom of the log: Attempt to unlock mutex that was not locked

The problem is that glib 2.42, used in Ubuntu 14.10 became more strict
about lock checking, and you're using a version of gvfs from a older
version of GNOME which had a locking bug. See this commit
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gvfs/commit/?id=2153d300f24d3388d7c4ab75a55451ad5a581b5a

Unfortunately, mixing and matching bits from different GNOME releases
can cause problems...

For a solution, you could ask the Ubuntu maintainers to add that patch.

[Bug 410288] Re: Nautilus does not handle FTP timeouts well

2015-03-02 Thread Ross Lagerwall
If you want to help, please run the following in a terminal:
pkill gvfs; GVFS_DEBUG=all `find /usr/lib* -name 'gvfsd'` ~/log.txt
and then upload log.txt in your home directory so we can see a log of what is
happening.

sftp is a completely different protocol so it's expected to be
different.

[Bug 891427] Re: File manager in 11.10 behavior has changed, now more cumbersome

2015-03-02 Thread Ross Gammon
This is a very old bug. I am sorry it never received any attention, but this is
probably because it was never assigned to the right package.
If the problem has gone away, you do not need to do anything, the bug will
eventually expire. If you are still having the problem, could let us know what
version of Ubuntu you are running now.

[Bug 1408107] Re: Can't remove huge files from samba share on first attempt - Input/output error

2015-02-18 Thread Ross Lagerwall
Unfortunately, gvfs can't control the timeouts that libsmbclient uses. I
recommend filing a bug at https://bugzilla.samba.org/ or asking a
question on the mailing list:
https://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Alternatively, you could try poke about on the router and see what is
happening, e.g. if the server crashes or something.

[Bug 1408107] Re: Can't remove huge files from samba share on first attempt - Input/output error

2015-02-17 Thread Ross Lagerwall
I don't think this is a gvfs issue, the timeout is coming from
libsmbclient which gvfs uses to communicate with the server. Deleting a
file should be quick though so timing out is strange.

How long does it take to timeout? Maybe there's something strange
happening like the server crashing which causes the connection to
timeout?

This is the interesting bit from the logs, where two stat() calls in a
row give different results:

[Bug 1416607] [NEW] nautilus won't rename any file - ignores all keyboard input

2015-01-30 Thread Ross Gayler
Public bug reported:

Possible regression of Bug #1322925

I have been using nautilus with no problems on this PC (ubuntu 14.10 amd64)
since October 2014.
I just succesfully renabmed one file with nautilus and went to rename another.
The rename dialog box came up with the file name and everything I type from the
keyboard is ignored in the dialog box (cut and paste shortcuts and straight
text are ignored). The same thing applies to trying to change the file name via
the properties dialog.

Every file and folder I have tried to rename gives me the same problem
(I am able to rename the same files from the command line with mv).

The following things have NOT fixed the problem:
* Start a new instance of nautilus
* Log out and back
* Reboot the system
* Re-install nautilus

So until there is a fix this appears to be permanently broken for me.

Everything else in nautilus appears to be OK (as far as I can tell so
far).

+ I just succesfully renamed one file with nautilus and went to rename another
(copying the first file name from the rename dialog in order to aply it to the
second file). The rename dialog box came up with the file name and everything I
type from the keyboard is ignored in the dialog box (cut and paste shortcuts
and straight text are ignored). The same thing applies to trying to change the
file name via the properties dialog.

In the rename dialog, if I rox.ight-click I get a menu with cut, copy,
and paste. They actually work on the filename text in the rename dialog
  b

Every file and folder I have tried to rename gives me the same problem
(I am able to rename the same files from the command line with mv).

The following things have NOT fixed the problem:
  * Start a new instance of nautilus
  * Log out and back
  * Reboot the system (-- This is weird. There must be some state stored
somewhere.)
  * Re-install nautilus

So until there is a fix this appears to be permanently broken for

[Bug 1387303] Re: regression: gnome-keyring components can't be disabled anymore

2015-01-28 Thread Ross Younger
I tagged this bug as verification-done, but had second thoughts: I've
only tested on trusty, not utopic, and it would be good to have
confirmation from somebody who uses OpenPGP smartcards.

[Bug 1388259] [NEW] gnome-keyring SRU breaks ECDSA keys

2014-10-31 Thread Ross Younger
Public bug reported:

Previously I had been using ssh-add with ECDSA keys. (OpenSSH_6.6.1p1
Ubuntu-2ubuntu2, OpenSSL 1.0.1f 6 Jan 2014)
After my system updated to gnome-keyring 3.10.1-1ubuntu4.1 (picking up the fix
for #1271591) they stopped working:

wry@onyx:~$ ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_ecdsa
Enter passphrase for /home/wry/.ssh/id_ecdsa:
Error reading response length from authentication socket.
Could not add identity: /home/wry/.ssh/id_ecdsa

Downgrading to gnome-keyring 3.10.1-1ubuntu4 resolves the issue.

This appears to be because gnome-keyring does not support ECDSA.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=641082 refers.

This means that the fix for #1271591 is an overall system regression for
anybody who uses ECDSA keys.

[Bug 1245272] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to Shift+Shift

2013-11-23 Thread Ross Golder
With latest packages (gnome-control-center 1:3.6.3-0ubuntu45.1, gnome-
settings-daemon 3.8.5-0ubuntu11.1.) Shift+Shift still does not work for
me. When I try to set it in thecontrol panel UI, it sets it as
'Disabled'.

Also, even though it's marked as Disabled in the control panel, the
keyboard indicator applet still changes between the two sources when
Shift+Shift are pressed - however, the source doesn't actually change -
so regardless of what is displayed in the indicator, it keeps typing in
the original source. It seems I have to grab the mouse and change the
layout using the keyboard indicator, which is fairly
frustrating/confusing.

Another unusual behaviour is that, despite only having 'US
International' and 'Thai' chosen for layouts in the control panel, I
seem to randomly end up in a UK layout (shift-3 being a UK pound sign),
and have to grab for the mouse again to get back to US. I have language
set to 'English (United Kingdom)'), but that should not affect the
keyboard layout, should it? Can anyone shed any light on this unexpected
behaviour?

[Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME

2013-04-01 Thread Dabo Ross
I get these a lot with ubuntu 12.10, though they aren't really a problem as I
have a script run with crontab to delete them on boot
`@reboot rm ~/.goutputstream-*`
in `crontab -e`.
It has something to do with file management, I think.
just speculating, but because everyone who has these have them with some
process that edits files, like Ubuntu one/dropbox, or when booting up/shutting
down. What if the process that creates goutputstream for changing files hasn't
fully loaded or is shut down in the middle of an operation? (just speculating).

[Bug 898087] Re: Keyboard shortcuts set in Gnome Control Center - Keyboard do not have affect if those same shortcuts are set in Compiz

2012-12-30 Thread Chris Ross
@Didier Roche

Still not fixed for me on a new System76 gazp8 with the preinstalled
Quantal. To reiterate, the default hotkeys Move window to workspace
left/right/up/down work fine. But if I use the same hotkey (or any
other hotkey) for Move window to workspace 1/2/3/4 it doesn't work.

Multiple people are still reporting this, so perhaps it shouldn't be
marked as fixed?

[Bug 816669] Re: encrypted-home support in new user dialog

2012-11-02 Thread Lex Ross
The problem still exisy in Precise. I'd say don't bother with swap
encryption and hybernation related issues, as it is way too complicated.
After all, what we do here is create a new user and it's home directory
if required. There is no need to look beyond this, and any provisions
beyond user home encryption are inappropriate and are not expected,
really. All we need is normal gnome-system-tools functionality.

[Bug 957341] Re: [imap] moving a folder results in its deletion

2012-04-26 Thread Ross Gayler
I don't know if this is related, but I have just encountered some
Evolution folder-moving weirdness in 11.10.

I was trying to rename or move various local folders (maildir) and would
get error messages about non-existent folders/files. I would restart
Evolution and then things would look (more) OK. Looking at the folder
structure in the file system it appeared that the folders were being
renamed in the background (these were big folder hierarchies with
hundreds of nested folders) and while the filesysten rename was in
progress the Evolution folders wouldn't play nice. (There was also no
indication in Evolution that a background operation was running.)

Also, when the top-level evolution folder had subfolders but no messages
the corresponding filesystem folder didn't exist. If I created a
corresponding folder in the filesystem I was then able to rename the
folder in Evolution.

[Bug 921145] [NEW] Brasero: no way to change default destination when creating disk image

2012-01-24 Thread Lex Ross
Public bug reported:

When burning a project to an image file on disk, there is no way to change
default destination path. It is always set to $HOME/brasero.iso for data
project, $HOME/brasero.cue for audio project etc.

There simply may be no room under user home directory or the user may prefer to
change the default destination path for one reason or another. It is pretty
standard for an application to allow the user to choose destination for the
resulting output.

The same applies to the working temporary directory which defaults to /tmp. I
do not have enough room in /tmp which is mounted as tmpfs on my system, and
have no good reason to grow its size. While default temporary dir can be easily
changed using gconf-editor, this is not user friendly. Some sort of preferences
dialogue would be useful in this case.

Re: [Bug 893420] Re: PST import no longer available after update to Oneiric

2012-01-22 Thread Ross Gayler
Hi Martin,

That seems to work.

PST is now visible as an import format.

I have imported 3 PST files of ~2GB each and it looks like it worked.
Emails, contacts, and calendars appear to have been imported
correctly. I didn't have any tasks or notes in those PSTs. I wouldn't
call that an exhaustive test - but I presume the fix didn't involve
any (intentional) changes to the pstlib functionality, only whether it
was included in the build.

Thanks

Ross

2011-10-26 Thread ross
Screenshot from ronsonk exactly describes the problem for me too. Reboots don't
fix it. I'm using Nvidia proprietary drivers. I noticed the problem for the
first time today, the install (since fresh a week ago) has been fine until now.
Possibly related - sound sometimes doesn't start properly either (starting
cheese sometimes fixes it - go figure!), and the shutdown button top right just
seems to log me out when I choose restart while the shut down application
does work.

Something's screwy...

[Bug 846873] [NEW] Evince: Invisible text in PDF file

2011-09-11 Thread Lex Ross
Public bug reported:

Certain format produces transparent text when viewing PDF on the screen.
The text remains invisible even if formatted. The only way to get to see
that text is to copy-paste it blindly into the text editor or the
terminal. To reproduce, see for instance an O'Relly Book Running Linux
4th Edition which is available for download free of charge and is
attached to this bug report for your convenience.

Scroll down to any page containing commands to be entered into the
terminal on the command line. Any text after the command prompt is
invisible. For instance, at the bottom of page 58 the fdisk command
does not appear after the # (root prompt) on the command line.
swaponcommand cannot be seen at the bottom of page 62 and so forth.

[Bug 799019] [NEW] gnome terminal consisitently stops accepting keyboard input after using it for a day or two

2011-06-17 Thread Edward Ross
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

This always happens after using a terminal for a day or so. The behavior, to
me, looks like consistent with a some kind of a memory leak. All the
click-able stuff still responds but resetting the terminal has no effect. The
only workaround is to close the terminal and start a new one. The problem
seems to be related to the level of activity in the terminal - when I open
several of them at the same time, it is always the one being used the most that
craps out.
Any ideas? Is there anything I can do to help with this issue?
Thanks,
Edward
