I have had this bug in Intrepid as well (twice, actually -- I fixed it once several months ago by resetting the permissions for my /home and it's recently come back). I'm really not sure what triggered it, especially this second time, as I haven't added/removed any startup programs recently as far as I remember. [Bug 260451] [NEW] Evolution-data-server-2.22 hangs/blocks evolution from starting
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution-data-server 1) I'm running standard Ubuntu 8.04 here. 2) My version of evolution-data-server is 2.22.3-0ubuntu2 and evolution itself is 2.22.3.1-0ubuntu1. 3) What I expect to happen is: a) I start evolution and check my email. b) I close evolution. c) I launch evolution again and it opens. 4) What has been happening for me recently is: a) I start evolution and check my email, which presumably causes evolution-data-server to launch at the same time. b) I close evolution. evolution-data-server stays open -- not consuming any CPU and only a couple of MB of memory. (This does not always happen -- sometimes e-d-s will close normally. This *seems* to be independent of anything I do in evolution.) c) I try to start evolution at some point later on and nothing happens graphically, although a process is started. (This can happen multiple times.) If I kill the leftover evolution-data-server, evolution will then launch. I ran apport on the hung e-d-s, but let me know if there's any better information I can get on this. Thanks! Unfortunately, neither program crashes, they just hang, so I don't think I can obtain a proper backtrace. I'll attach the output I get from gdb (little) and strace (possibly more useful). About the gdb output for evolution -- the first evolution I launched spawned an e-d-s which hung. I then tried launching another evolution which did nothing and hung.
