 Hi,

We need a debug output to understand the issue.

Start Ekiga using this command in a terminal:
 $ ekiga -d 4 2output.txt
Wait for the registration to succeed, call and wait until the call fails.
Close Ekiga. Attach the file ouput.txt here.

 Best regards,

And you posting useless information in this bug does?

It's not working like it is supposed to and that's painfully obvious.

And it should be painfully obvious by now that the issue cannot be fixed
if nobody can provide sufficient information to solve the problem.
Capisce?

I really don't want to be rude, but how do you expect anyone to fix a
problem this vaguely described? It is not like we can reproduce it with
our own hardware, on the contrary it works as expected. It is not
exactly easy to tell that the BIOS should be upgraded to fix the problem
like in [1].

So send us your hardware, provide root ssh access to the hardware with
or give us a proper report. It is not like it should be too difficult to
follow the troubleshooting steps of [2] or simply shut up.

I can tell you my same exact hardware works multitudes better in terms of
USB performance running the other OS. Not sure what a bug report has to do
 with that, it's a fact.

It is a good first step to know the hardware doesn't suck, then we can
move on to the next in [2].

And I sympathize with you and others not being tech savy and just want
your OS to work, but unless you actually pay for support or someone to
look at your problem you should respect that there is only so much you
can expect of people using their spare time to support you.

2009-06-10 Thread Simon Holm Thøgersen
man, 08 06 2009 kl. 20:14 +, skrev epv:
This isn't normal behavior. Obviously it behaves fine while all writes
are going to buffer cache, but once it tries to write it out to the
device, wait times on the partition shoot up to 30sec or more, and all
processes trying to touch the usb disk block practically forever.

If other processes get completely starved due to the writeout then there
is probably something in the VM, file system or I/O scheduler that needs
to be fixed. You would have to make a convincing argument, though, like
providing a very simple usecase. It should literally be something as
simple as the following

(cp bigfile /media/disk/ ) ; sleep 10 ; time echo foo /media/disk/bar

If the time is really in seconds as you seem to suggest it is
interesting I'd say. On the other hand, if what you describe is due the
low performance of the underlying device then it is expected behaviour
(the low performance of the device might be due to a bug though).

Sysstat shows it as 100% busy continuously.

'It' being the underlying device? That is what you would expect.

 The reports of Fast at
first, then slowing down are of course because of the buffer cache
making it look like it's initially fast but access to the underlying
device is always very slow, whether you are writing to it with gvfs, cp,
 dd, buffer, or whatever.

Yes, and?

In addition, it's only writes that are slow, and they're vastly slower
than could be explained by a crappy USB device- in my case around 100 -
200 kbytes/sec on a device that under a Hardy install writes at several
 mbytes/sec.

If Hardy was fine then you should open a new bug report with the proper
details (once again, see [1] or Theodore's comments).

Stop thinking that Nautilus is a good indicator of speed already damnit!
It is possible that you and other users really get buggily slow
performance, but I assure that there is just as many in this thread that
experience no other bugs than themselves interpretting Nautilus wrong.

And since you didn't notice, there is nothing to solve as there haven't
been supplied sufficient information to diagnose a bug.

If you've got hardware that performs significantly better with Windows
or different kernels then file a proper bug.

I wish this would get fixed really soon, I recently went back to the other
OS and it itself has many stability issues that Ubuntu does not
have, so I promptly switched back to 9.04.

And I wish all you people got a clue as how to make a useful bug report
really soon, but it seems like I'll have to go back to dreaming.

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but I noticed today that
performance is much much better when copying directories to directories vs.
copying a file to a directory. For example, I had a directory on my
desktop, with three subdirectories, each with two files in them. When I
right-click copy and then right-click paste on to my external USB HDD to a
particular directory the file transfer speed stays at 15MBps +/- instead of
the usual starting at 15MBps and tapering off to 5MBps or less and
eventually just stopping altogether. The total size of the main directory
being copied was just over 36GB. Each of the three subdirectories contained
 a 10-12GB file and a smaller 60kb file each.

Are these dstat numbers? Anyway, file a proper bug if you want progress.

[Bug 288185] Re: Evolution plain-text email includes formatting stuff - should be pure plain text

2009-06-08 Thread Simon Bridge
I can add info to this behavior:

It is not restricted to plain-text mode - also occurs in html.

The inconvenience is that it become impossible to split lines in the
quote, say, to insert a reply.

The workaround is to copy the text inside the format box and then past-
as-quotation to the end - then erase the entire format box.

Examining the page source when this happens shows me that the original
email was formatted using a table. Splitting a line in the quote would
involved adding additional tags to end the row, the columb, and the
table, then restart it again.

The formatting seems to be to allow some services to add advertising, or
other non-user message, to a footer below the email text.

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-05-20 Thread Simon Holm Thøgersen
MVDHR,

and why should we care? This bug has been open for a year and 50 people
have commented here, so news would be that the problem actually went
away. You give no information that helps further debug the issue, please
read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskPerformance and diagnose your
problem according to the tips given there before posting anything
further. And please, please, please open a new bug once you've followed
through with that page since it actively hurts when people hi-jacks
other peoples bugs for what might be a completely different issue.

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-05-20 Thread Simon Holm Thøgersen
Night64,

flash devices are slow and the only reason the transfer appears to be
fast at the beginning is that data is written to OS memory and then
later to disk. Use dstat to monitor disk performance as explained on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskPerformance, And open new bug
reports please (though not in this case since your device is just slow,
unless you can demonstrate better performance using Windows everything
is as expected).

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-05-19 Thread Simon Holm Thøgersen
So, I believe I am the one Theodore refered to as venting how the
useless Ubuntu bug reports are. While they really are, I also really
want to help.

So, following Theodore's suggestion I've started
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskPerformance on the Ubuntu Wiki. It
is pretty basic right now, mostly repeating what Theodore already wrote
here. Let's follow this from here (or rather in separate bug reports as
Leann and Theodore have already advocated) and expand it according to
common patterns of the reports.

[Bug 370761] Re: nautilus proposes to delete symbolic links when accessing them via ftp

2009-05-13 Thread Simon
It's the same bug.
Steps:
1) In remote server: I create one link, in Nautilus, via right click create
link.
2) Open that ftp folder in nautlis, from local PC, and I double-click on the
link. Nautilus in local shows the error: The link «link name» is broken. Do
you want to move it to the trash?. And it is not true because the link works
correctly on the server.

[Bug 370761] Re: nautilus proposes to delete symbolic links when accessing them via ftp

2009-05-12 Thread Simon
No, it's true that nautilus doesn't allows you to create a symlink via right
click create link, but my bug is not this.
My bug is:
If I make a symlink with nautilus, in REMOTE, via right click create link, this
symlink is created and it works in REMOTE PC but it doesn't work in nautilus
LOCAL accessing to that folder via FTP.
I apologize for my bad english. It's hard for me explain this clearly, I don't
know if now is clearer.

[Bug 374293] [NEW] gdmflexiserver crash after login

2009-05-09 Thread Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have a running Gnome session. I want to open another session with the
Xmonad window manager. I start gdmflexiserver and the login-screen
appears. I change the session to Xmonad and put in my login details. The
former desktop appears - nothing else happens. This happens every time,
also with other window managers than Xmonad. if i choose Xmonad in the
normal gdm login screen everthing works fine.

Here the steps for reproducing it:
1. start system
2. login to the normal gnome session
3. open a terminal
4. write in: gdmflexiserver
5. choose a Xmonad session
6. put in the normal username and password
7. push enter
- see for yourself -

I expect that the Xmonad window manager is started in a second X-server.
Instead the former Xsession reappears the other session is not opened.

Maybe this is not the fault of gdm but something which is started after
the login - I can't tell.

The usual:

2009-05-08 Thread Simon
I use vsftpd 2.1.1 like ftp server.
If I make a symlink with ln command, it works.
But if I make a symlink with nautilus, in server, from context menu, option
Create link, this link works locally but it don't works in nautilus remote.

[Bug 370758] Re: unable to edit location name in clock

2009-05-02 Thread Simon
Sorry - didn't realise this was unclear.

From the Clock Preferences dialogue, add a location (e.g T'ai-pei
Shih), and then try to change the name (e.g. to 台北市, or just Taipei).
Note: the location chosen doesn't matter.

Changing the Location Name and then clicking Okay has no noticeable
effect whatsoever.

Thanks!

[Bug 370758] Re: unable to edit location name in clock

2009-05-02 Thread Simon
fair enough. under intrepid I was able to change the name of the
location to something more meaningful. in this particular case all I
wanted to do was change the orthography of the name.

I've just discovered I can get round it by creating a new location with
my desired name, and then copying the lat. and long. information from
the original entry. it's a fiddly process and I fell foul of
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/304082), but
it amounts to doing what I wanted, so I'm happy.

[Bug 370758] Re: unable to edit location name in clock

2009-05-02 Thread Simon
Hmm. On reflection, the workaround I described does work, cumbersome
though it is, but it seems I can't get weather information for this
location now. I guess the lat. and long. values aren't sufficient for
it to work out that it's the same place.

This is only a small bug, but I do think it *is* a bug, since it
represents a regression from functionality which worked in Intrepid,
Hardy etc

[Bug 240621] Re: Cannot access secure WebDav folders (through davs)

2009-04-26 Thread Simon
Hello all,

I'm not sure whether this is a but or just a configuration problem on my
computer (Ubuntu 9.10).

I've created a shared folder on a remote server that should be
accessible through webdav: by pasting https://mysite.org:2078 but when
doing so, I simply get the answer Could not display
https://usine21.org:2078;. Access was denied.

Before considering this as a bug, maybe the question is rather only: Is
my port 2078 closed, and how do I open it?

[Bug 364332] [NEW] Wrong sound device is chosen for volume control.

2009-04-20 Thread Simon Morgan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

By default, gnome-volume-control selects the ALSA device for volume
control.

This means that when I go to adjust the volume, it is adjusting the
volume of the sound driver itself which, at least for my card, doesn't
work very well. Anyway, I am pretty sure it should be adjusting the
Pulse Audio volume levels.

This can be resolved by right-clicking on the volume control applet and
choosing Preferences and selecting the Pulse Audio device. However,
after doing this, when I use the multimedia keys on my keyboard to
adjust the volume, it still seems to be using the ALSA device to control
volume levels.

[Bug 307283] Re: Weather applet does not update periodically.

2009-04-09 Thread Simon
Bug appears on my machine as well (eeepc 1000he, unbuntu intrepid,
weather version 2.24.1). It does however update when manually requested.

at boot up, I noticed the applet loads before my internet connection is
up and running (in my case, wifi) and keeps saying updating when
mouse-over'd.

I feels like the applet does not monitor the connection state as being
connected and then force updating.

Thanks,

also, I don't have permission to see the bug this is a duplicate of, so
I had no way of knowing whether it was a duplicate or not. Could that

[Bug 341389] Re: gnome-open keeps re-running itself if set as default opening application

2009-04-05 Thread Simon Woolf
Confirmed. I've just been hit by this myself (on Intrepid).

It took about half an hour to work out that it was gnome-open, because
neither top, nor htop, nor gnome-system-monitor were any use at all.
All three showed 100% total CPU usage, but none showed what was using
it: adding up the CPU totals for all processes usually came to about
10%. gnome-open, on recausing the problem and checking now, was right
at the bottom, shown using up no CPU whatsoever.

I only finally worked out that it was gnome-open using atop: using the
'c' (show command line) option showed a large number of gnome-open
lines. The brackets indicate that the process finished during the last
interval apparently: it was restarting itself over and over, but only
one copy was ever running at one time; hence why top and htop only
showed one.

So how did this happen? At some point, I think I set Opera to display
shell scripts with gnome-open, in the belief that this would just
cause it to open them with Gnome's default handler (which at the time
was gedit). Apparently that must have caused gnome-open to be set as
the default file handler for scripts.

I have done what marcobra advises

Authentication problem. Steps:
1) I reboot the system
2) I open the console and I execute: polkit-gnome-authorization. The program
starts correctly.
3) In console, I execute: users-admin and I try to unlock it, error:
** (users-admin:4346): CRITICAL **: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by

4) In console, I execute again: polkit-gnome-authorization, error:
