[Bug 715584] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV

2011-02-09 Thread sojourner
I had updated less than an hour before the reboots that showed the crash
, the crash occurred as the desktop was loading (after login) so
possibly some things may not have been fully loaded , I have noticed on
natty that some things like wireless seem to load in the wrong sequence
,sometimes wireless has to be disabled (not disconnected ) and then re
enabled to get it to actually connect even though the indicator shows
bars , perhaps something else loading slow or off sequence causes the
crash , I will try to get more info .

[Bug 250021] Re: copy as root trashes my install

2008-08-16 Thread sojourner
I agree whole heartedly with Nullack , a bug brought on by a simple
common action that locks you out of your system deserves a higher
priority than low . further the repermissioning of / is bizzare
enough that even an experienced user might not find it for awhile and if
they did not have the foresight to set a real root password rather than
sudo ( which don't work when the bug occurs) his install would be toast
.

[Bug 255929] Re: Totem Fails On Multiple Audio and Subtitle Streams

2008-08-14 Thread sojourner
I will confirm this bug , to reproduce load a movie/sample with multiple
audio and or subtitles and start playing it then switch the audio to a
different language , the language that it originaly started with will
continue until you reset the playback to an earlier section of the track
or restart the playback from the begining . on my system switching on
subtitles will show the language of the subtitles but not display the
actual subtitles, switching subtitles during playback is as with the
audio.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 250506 ***

are you sure this bug is a duplicate ? this is NOT repeat NOT that
systemshutdown then shutdown in the dialog box takes you to the login
window . This is new behavior that started with the aug 8 updates
shutdown or any other choice in the dialog box only closes the dialog
box it DOES NOT send you to the login screen or anything else, it does
nothing at all but close the dialog box .

[Bug 250021] Re: copy as root trashes my install

2008-08-09 Thread sojourner
First it is NOT HARDY it IS INTREPID IBEX as I cleary stated in the original
report . Second it occurs on an hard drive install . As you request I will risk
my THIRD fresh install , INTREPID IBEX ALPHA 3 fully updated to august 9 (AM US
east coast) to see if I can provide exact steps to reproduce . It may require
some time for me to do so since it does not happen every time nautilus is
invoked as root . the conditions I use to test are as follows .
1. install to hard drive partitioned as / and home and swap . using alternate
install cd .
2 . update using aptitude safe-upgrade daily morning and night.
3 . use the install for all normal daily functions not requiring absolute data
integrity .
4. some non default and non OSS aps are installed , Opera browser , flash ,
acroread ,et cetera.
5 the Nvidia driver (177) from the Ubuntu repos is in use , compiz is in use .

I will post back when I reproduce the bug .

[Bug 250021] Re: copy as root trashes my install

2008-08-09 Thread sojourner
here are the steps by which you can reproduce this bug.
1. in /home/username/subdir using nautilus invoked by gksudo nautilus open a
tar.bz2 and extract it .
2. close the root nautilus, close the terminal from which it was invoked .
3. open a user nautilus .
4. watch while system fails .
note ! see attached JPG taken of completely unresponsive desktop , I couldn't
do a normal screenshot because at this point only a hard reset or sysreq rseiub
is possible .

yes I did not have to even open a file with file-roller , just invoking
it from terminal sudo file-roller %u causes the problem to occur ,
again the permissions of / are being changed to 700 . logging in as root

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 238668 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238668

I do not believe that this is a duplicate of bug#238668 . Perhaps my use of the
word trashes misled you . I am not reporting a memory leak or any thing about
trash .
What I am reporting is that using sudo , GKSUDO nautilus to copy files or
running file-roller with sudo ,GKSUDO often results in the permissions of the
root partition ( / ) being alterd to 700 causing the system not to boot all the
way to GDM. This is not caused by running nautilus with sudo it also occurs
with GKSUDO .

to reproduce this bug open nautilus in browser mode using sudo or gksudo
or gksu and then copy files or open/create an archive with file roller ,
possibly other actions also . this sometimes but not always results in
the permissions on the root directory ( / ) not roots home dir. being
changed to 700 which results in a system that will nolonger boot to GDM
.

[Bug 250021] Re: copy as root trashes my install

2008-08-08 Thread sojourner
the first tme this occured to me was after copying some files from my
/home/user to as subdir in /usr . I had to do the copy as root so on
that occasion I used sudo ( bad practice I know ) nautilus to invoke a
privlaged nautilus to do the copy. after copying I returned to my /home
and attempted to open one of the files ( a script file) and the system
froze as described by dean loros . the second time it did involve file
roller when I attempted to open an archive from a root nautilus ( this
time invoked by gksudo ) . the bug you originaly marked this as a
duplicate of bug#238668 refers to a memory-leak with a root nautilus
and the trash Icon and nowhere mentions altered permissions or file
roller .

[Bug 250021] Re: copy as root trashes my install

2008-08-08 Thread sojourner
as Michael Coupet states when this bug occurs you cannot regain control
by killing the root nautilus , infact you cannot kill it because the
system is completly unresponsive and only a hard reset or sysreq rseiub
will reboot the system and the reboot will not start gdm but leaves you
at a terminal login . investigation shows that the permissions for /
have ben changed to 700 (root access only) . logging in to the terminal
as root if you have a root password set and running chmod 755 /
(rwx for root r x for user and others) restores the system to normal .

I also have been getting this randomly for a couple of weeks , selecting quit
seems to freeze something , mouse pointer moves but clicks do nothing , a
couple of monitors I have running are updating so the display isnt frozen but
it takes about 2 minutes for the shutdown dialog box to appear. and this
dosen't happen every shutdown or seem to be associated with what I was doing
just before shutdown , from old habit I manualy shutdown all non autostart apps
before hitting quit.

[Bug 186665] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in nautilus_bookmark_list_load_file()

2008-01-28 Thread sojourner
trying to find what was causing nautilus to segfault I looked for
anything in /home/(me) that referenced bookmarks since that is
prominent in the BT. found a file gtk-bookmarks containing only an error
message about something being missing . the same file in a new user I
had created and for which nautilus would start contained lines
referencing dirs in /home/newuser . I erased the error message in gtk-
bookmarks leaving an empty file and nautilus now starts both from term
and at boot , icons for both partitions and apps are on DT . please pass

[Bug 185650] Re: [Hardy] Nautilus segfaults, cannot be upgraded

2008-01-24 Thread sojourner
I cant launch nautilus, it segfaults . If I launch thunar and double
click on the crash report it does not send it , instead it opens the
report in text editor. besides the crash report is from before updating
, after update no crash report is generated because it never gets that
far it segfaults trying to load.

2007-08-29 Thread sojourner
other volumes have been showing as they should on my fiesty install
since my post of 2007-03-09 and also in my gutsy install on another box
. If you wish I can dl a live cd and test that . I do not have a live cd
to test right now as I installed gutsy by changing sources and upgrading
a fiesty install.

for the last 2 or 3 days they have been showing and
available consistantly both from placescomputer and
in the nautilus side pannel. for a couple of days
before that they would not show right after boot but
would show if I killed X with ctrl-alt-backspace and
relogged in.
