The applet isn't what is handling keyboard shortcuts for raising and
lowering volume. That is handled by gnome-settings-daemon. This might
be an issue with some of the packaging. Do you have:

  /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-2.0/libsound.so

That I believe is the module that handles those keys.

[Bug 506404] Re: System menu in top panel also shows logout/shutdown

2010-01-20 Thread Ted Gould
I really only consider indicator-applet-complete useful for debugging (I
use it as such) so I'm not sure how important this is to fix. But, the
patch that removes these entries when the session menu applet or FUSA is
on the panel is in gnome-panel. That patch would have to have the
IndicatorAppletComplete added to it. I'll let the gnome-panel
maintainers decide what they want to do there. I'm of mixed mind as I
don't expect anyone to really have indicator-applet-complete installed
unless they're serious tweekers :)

[Bug 505310] [NEW] Choice of DVI outlet affects ability to boot 9.10

2010-01-09 Thread Ted Pritchard
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Precision 390 (Intel Core 2 Duo) and use 8.04 without any
problem whatever. I recently also installed 9.10.

From a cold start 9.10 won't boot correctly. The screen goes to
entering power save mode and remains black. However from the sounds
emitted the boot process is progressing to the log in screen.

However if I start 8.04 first and then restart and select 9.10, 9.10 usually
starts and runs correctly.
Looking at /boot/grub/grub.cfg and /etc/default/grub I'm wondering if perhaps
it's as simple as the time out values are too low.
Any suggestions?

Ted

I also posted this problem on Ubuntu forums here (
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305459page=30 )

Then John Pizzapone (see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305459page=30 ) discovered that
changing the selected DVI outlet fixed his boot problem. I changed mine and it
also fixed my boot problem with 9.10.
There must be a difference between 8.04 and 9.10 scripts that confuses the
graphics card. If someone expert can look at this it may solve a problem
perplexing a large number of otherwise happy Ubuntu users.

It is reproducible only in the sense that I'm stuck with it. If I delete
the account, exit evolution (and kill the remaining processes alarm
data), then open evolution and re-enter the account using the wizard, it
still does not appear in the tree.

At some point, I'll try opening another account, maybe gmail, and see
how that goes.

Thanks,

[Bug 493595] Re: Evolution segfaults on startup in guest session

2009-12-07 Thread Ted Gould
This got fixed for me with a reboot. Considering the level of the
stacktrace (threads) I'm guessing it was a mismatch caused by an
upgrade.

[Bug 473456] [NEW] gtester should fail if a test fails even with -k

2009-11-03 Thread Ted Gould
Public bug reported:

If you use gtester with the -k option it continues to run tests even if one
fails. Which is great. But what is not great is that it returns 0 in this
case even if some of the tests fail. It should still report failure even if -k
is used.

Re: [Bug 448084] Re: gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_widget_show()

2009-10-28 Thread Ted Gould
On Wed, 2009-10-28 at 08:59 +, Sebastien Bacher wrote:
Ted, several of those bugs seem to indicate indicator applet issues,
could it be that the gnome-panel change is crashing when the indicator-
applet has issues? Could you have a look to the issue there?

I don't see anything indicator-applet related in the stack trace, and in
theory, the gnome-panel binary should protected from anything that
indicator-applet could do via Bonobo. So it seems unlikely that
something in the indicator-applet itself could be the cause.

I was curious about the patch that we've applied to hide the system
items when indicator-applet-session gets removed. The reason I think it
may be suspect is that the crash is happening in panel applet remove,
but the function is gtk_widget_show() -- it's atypical that you'd show
something on a destroy. But, infact that's what the FUSA patch does
when FUSA is removed.

It looks like the gtk_widget_show() is being called directly from the
marshaller, which would mean that the show function itself would need to
be the callback function. All of the signal handlers in the patch use a
wrapper function to check which applet is being requested. But, it's
possible that the compilers is doing a tail-recursion optimization...

All in all, that's a long way of saying: I'm not sure what's causing
this. But I think that the system item removal patch is suspect. It
could be made more bullet-proof in that it could attach signal handlers
to the widgets to ensure they aren't destroyed anytime. I'm not sure
why that'd be happening though, and why would wouldn't have seen this on
Jaunty and Intrepid as well. And it seems like a big change for a
Karmic update. Thoughts?

[Bug 459447] [NEW] rhythmbox hangs on playing multiple albums with same artist; must restart OS to get it functioning

2009-10-23 Thread Ted Duran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Ubuntu 9.04

rhythmbox 0.12.0-0ubuntu4

It should play codecs from mp3 to wma and vice versa seamlessly.

Rhythmbox hangs when playing songs of the same artist when they are
encoded with different codecs. For example: Playing by artist Big
Rich, Rhythmbox will begin playing through one album that is encoded
with mp3 and when it gets to the next album of Big Rich which is
encoded with wma, it will hang and become unresponsive. Restarting the
application does not help. Rebooting the OS corrects the issue.

[Bug 428115] Re: Computer no longer locks on suspend or lid close

2009-09-23 Thread Ted Gould
This seems to be caused by the fact that in Jaunty we asked GNOME Power
to suspend for us but now we're using DeviceKit-power (which is good)
but it's not handling the desktop side of things for us. So it seems we
should be locking the screen now.

Does CK also track the number of logins and last login? Do you already
have that information or is it easy to get?

Also we need to know if the user currently has a session open on the

I think there also needs to be a function CanHazLoaded that can check

probably be the case for the session menu.

How about a function to SwitchToUser which would either switch to the
VT that is running for that user or to GDM to get a password on a new
VT? Does that seem like it fits in this API?

[Bug 423496] [NEW] RB doubles the play count when playing songs on connected ipod

2009-09-02 Thread Ted Fulmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I suspected that rhythmbox was incorrectly updating the play count when
playing songs from a connect ipod. I created a small iTunes library with
just 12 songs with no play counts. I played 1 song 1 time and iTunes
updated the play count to 1. Then I updated an ipod to match that
library and attached that ipod to a ubuntu system running rhythmbox
11.6. RB showed the ipod with the correct play count on the track in
question as 1. I played that track with RB. RB displayed the correct
play count of 2. When I connected the ipod back to the system with
iTunes the play count was updated to 3. I repeated the entire process
and the end result was a play count of 7. It appears to me that somehow
instead of replacing the previous count with the new correct number
somehow the new correct number is being ADDED to the previous count.

Unfortunately for me I only suspected this was occurring after my *real*
iTunes library started to show play counts in the 50,000 range :(

My ubuntu system is 8.10 and the RB version is 11.6.

IIRC, the code does notice renamed folders, assuming you do it within
nautilus.

If done with some other program (or CLI), it can't be detected, as
there's no way to differentiate a rename from a deletion. In this case,
it'll be treated as a deletion.

Yes, it is an upstream problem. But upstream is no longer working on
gnome-panel as it's deprecated in the GNOME 3 time frame. They're
mostly bug fixing gnome-panel today. I'm sure they'd accept patches,
but it would be very hard to get people excited about fixing it.

[Bug 272792] Re: Ellipsize long folder names in the location bar

2009-06-27 Thread Ted M Lin
Here's a possible patch to allow ellipsis into the pathbar button labels
by forcing a maximum label width (and a tooltip to show the entire
label). The solution provided in this patch isn't great (it forcibly
limits the width of the button), it's a step in the right direction.
(The patch has also been attached to the upstream bug.)

The patch could be improved to eliminate the hardcoded width (200px), to
allow the label to be as wide as possible without the pathbar vanishing
entirely, but I'm not quite sure how to approach that yet.

[Bug 289868] Re: Login screen clock has AM/PM suffix despite 24-hour format

2009-06-25 Thread Ted M Lin
After a bit of confusion, I tracked down the problem.

In language-pack-gnome-en-base, data/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/gdm.po, there are the
lines:
msgid %a %b %d, %l:%M %p
msgstr %a %d %b, %H:%M %p

The strftime format string %H:%M %p contains a mishmash of both 24h
and 12h formatting. This should either be just %H:%M, or the original
%l:%M %p.

Note:
The gdm source package (po/en_GB.po) has the following lines:
msgid %a %b %d, %l:%M %p
msgstr %a %b %d, %l:%M %p

The fix is to update language-pack-gnome-en-base with the right
string.

Addendum,

I would imagine the right msgstr would be:

[Bug 197657] Re: sunset in clock applet does not respect 12hr/24hr setting

2009-06-24 Thread Ted M Lin
Here's a sample patch (against Karmic's gnome-panel 2.26.2-1ubuntu1) to
have the sunrise/sunset time use the clock preference (12h vs 24h). It
should apply cleanly to the current version in Intrepid (untested).

The patch also requires a minimal libgweather1 version of at least
2.25.2 (i.e. a build-deb update).

2009-06-06 Thread Ted
Which file do you need?

The funny thing is that even if I try to use visualizaton in Rhythmbox
0.12.0 the program crashes.
Do all these programs use a common program or a library in the system which
is corrupted or not working properly?
Or can be my graphic card the source of my problems? (I use a graphic card
on my motherboard which is not very powerful.)

2009-06-06 Thread Ted
Fixed!
I have searched over Google a bit and I found a solution.

Run gstreamer properties (you can do this quickly by pressing Alt-F2 and
typing *gstreamer-properties* ) go to video tab and change
the Default Output Plugin setting to X Window System (No Xv) .

Found this solution on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=476419

I'm sorry that I reported it for a bug. I'm completely new to Linux.

To trigger the crash, I started seahorse, selected my key, clicked

clicked Revoke. I selected Superseded from the drop-down menu and
put Key superseded by RSA/RSA key 40E0D7C2 generated May 24th, 2009

[Bug 371281] [NEW] evolution-data-server is unstable, causes hangs in other applications

2009-05-03 Thread Ted
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

Release of Ubuntu: 9.04
Package Version: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1

Since installing Jaunty, both Pidgin and Evolution have been hanging
periodically. With Pidgin, these hangs can only be stopped with a kill
-9, while Evolution responds to kill. After killing Pidgin, it will
start again, begin to sign into accounts, and immediately freeze without
any indication in debug output. After killing Evolution, it will start
again, but not show a window.

I backtraced Pidgin during a hang (sorry, didn't save it, will attach
another when it happens again) and found it had hung on an Orbit call in
the Evolution Integration plugin. Killing the evolution-data-server-2.6
process caused Pidgin to revive. After launching Evolution and waiting
long enough for it to have started normally, killing the e-d-s process
caused Evolution to show a window and function normally.

Thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better.

I do remember hearing about this some time ago, and will search for it
both here and upstream. Right now I am setting this bug as confirmed,
and will either dup it against a previous, still open, Ubuntu bug, or
move it to triaged, with a link upstream.

 Here's a summary of what I remember:

the Automatic Contacts plugin (source ./plugins/bbdb) does have some
 problems (and needs some love).

There were some issues I remember, with the plugin enabled:

 (1) synchronisation between Pidgin and Evolution is extremely
simplistic, and the entries must match exactly. If they do not match,
 the plugin will re-add them;

 (2) the plugin will drive resynchronisation every two minutes; this
value is hardcoded in the plugin, and can only be changed in the source
 code;

 (3) the search for a match is linear; as a result, the bigger your
addressbook, the longer it will take. A match will be looked for each of
 the buddies in Pidgin.

So, if you add (2) and (3)... there is a potential for long loops...

Right now, I strongly suggest disabling Pidgin synchronisation.

While I have done that, and will report back if it fixes the problem, I
don't think that's the source here, unless you got that from the
backtrace. I had a crash-free Pidgin after I disabled the Evolution
Integration plugin in _Pidgin_, not the Pidgin Integration plugin in
_Evolution_. Are you sure it's the same issue?

[Bug 371281] Re: evolution-data-server is unstable, causes hangs in other applications

2009-05-03 Thread Ted
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 157207 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157207

Judging from the

#0 0x7f557f7cf2e9 in pthread_cond_wait@@GLIBC_2.3.2 ()

in the backtrace, two synchronisation agents running concurrently sounds
very plausible if a deadlock is what's causing pidgin / evolution to
hang. Since disabling the Evo-Pidgin plugin I haven't had any crashes,
but since the crashes weren't coming at a fixed interval I wouldn't put
much stock in that.

Either way, I don't think this is really a duplicate of #157207, as I'm
not having any of the problems listed in that bug.

2009-05-03 Thread Ted
Alright, even with the Pidgin Integration plugin in Evolution disabled,
Pidgin still crashed, and a checkin with Evolution confirmed it was
crashed as well. I'm attaching simple backtraces from Pidgin, Evo, and
e-d-s.

As usual, after killing e-d-s, both Pidgin and Evolution started back
up, with Evolution giving me an error about my address book being
inaccessible.

[Bug 361462] [NEW] Macbook keyboard alt/win key behavior reversed, can't fix in gnome ui

2009-04-14 Thread Ted Lemon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm running jaunty on an original macbook (core duo, not core 2 duo).
The macbook keyboard has the alt and win keys reversed, because on the
mac they aren't alt and win keys - they're command and option keys. So
there are really two problems.

The first is that I'd expect that when I select the keyboard type of
Apple + Macbook/Macbook Pro, it would automatically arrange for the keys
to be swapped, so that the GUI would be consistent with the user's
expectations (that CMD+Tab would switch between applications, not
Option+Tab).

The second is that, if you really think the current default behavior is
correct, then at least it should be the case that when I go into the
Layout Options... dialog, choose Alt/Win Key Behavior, and then check
Left Alt is swapped with Left Win, it would do the right thing. What
it does instead is to give the left alt and left win keys the same
meaning. This works for application switching, but breaks emacs
horribly, and also messes things up when running vinagre.

The following is what the modifier map looks like with the Macbook
keyboard selected but no swapping:

kandro% xmodmap
xmodmap: up to 3 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):

shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e)
lockCaps_Lock (0x42)
control Control_L (0x25), Control_R (0x69)
mod1Alt_L (0x40), Alt_R (0x6c), Meta_L (0xcd)
mod2Num_Lock (0x4d)
mod3
mod4Super_L (0xce), Hyper_L (0xcf)
mod5ISO_Level3_Shift (0x5c), Mode_switch (0xcb)

Here's what it looks like after mapping:

kandro% xmodmap
xmodmap: up to 4 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):

shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e)
lock
control Control_L (0x25), Control_L (0x42), Control_R (0x69)
mod1Super_L (0x40), Alt_R (0x6c), Alt_L (0x85), Meta_L (0xcd)
mod2Num_Lock (0x4d)
mod3
mod4Super_L (0x40), Super_L (0xce), Hyper_L (0xcf)
mod5ISO_Level3_Shift (0x5c), Mode_switch (0xcb)

It looks like it's both remapping the key cap *and* remapping the
modifiers, and that's not coming out well.

** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)

+ Here's what it looks like after mapping:

  kandro% xmodmap
xmodmap: up to 4 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):

  shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e)
  lock
  control Control_L (0x25), Control_L (0x42), Control_R (0x69)
  mod1Super_L (0x40), Alt_R (0x6c), Alt_L (0x85), Meta_L (0xcd)

  mod3
  mod4Super_L (0x40), Super_L (0xce), Hyper_L (0xcf)
  mod5ISO_Level3_Shift (0x5c), Mode_switch (0xcb)

It looks like it's both remapping the key cap *and* remapping the
modifiers, and that's not coming out well.

[Bug 358775] Re: Messaging Indicator icon should appear as the leftmost icon

2009-04-09 Thread Ted Gould
Marking it invalid for the indicator applet as the patch only effects
gnome-panel directly (and this won't get closed otherwise if it gets
uploaded :) )

** Changed in: indicator-applet (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid

[Bug 230749] Re: gnome-screensaver uses too much CPU

2009-03-25 Thread Ted Gould
As this was fixed in GSS 2.25.1 and Jaunty has 2.26.0 I'm marking this
as Fix Released. The issue of the backport should be discussed in
another bug. Thank you for reporting this issue.

Re: [Bug 345318] Re: Brightness control is slow and not costant with 90-Add-guarded-brightness-stepping-functions.patch 91-Using-guarded-and-scaled-stepping-when-dimming.patch

Ted, do you still remember why those were applied?

Yes, they were to deal with laptops that have a ton of levels, so you
want to smoothly go through the levels. So if you have a 1000 levels
switching from 10% to 20% shouldn't be a large jump, it should be a
gradient.

I believe that the patches were submitted upstream, though not applied
(we have a few of those). They were rewritten a couple of times to make
them more palatable upstream.

FWIW, the patch works well here for me on my Macbook Pro.

[Bug 342429] Re: When evolution window is active, notifications are still displayed for new mail

2009-03-19 Thread Ted Gould
I'm not sure why this didn't get updated. But the merge happened and
everything. Perhaps because it was under evolution and not
evolution-indicator
