The solution for https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874567 solved this
issue for me.

[Bug 1874567] Re: [nvidia] Rotating secondary monitor to portrait fails, results in landscape

2020-08-04 Thread Uwe Dulz
I installed the mutter libraries from focal proposed as described in #15 and
the issue seems to be fixed. Also copied my ~/.config/monitors.xml to
/var/lib/gdm/.config/monitors.xml and was able to get the same monitor
configuration working at the login screen.
So this is verified and finally works as it used to work in 18.04.

[Bug 1874217] Re: [nvidia] Dual monitor setup with secondary monitor in portrait-right mode cause tiled windows to occupy 1.5 monitors

2020-05-04 Thread Uwe Dulz
Same issue for me with Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti.
Settings in monitor.xml are not being applied.
xrandr and nvidia-settings are able to change the monitor rotation, just
gnome-settings messes it up.
Just blaming the Nvidia driver for this without giving a reason seems
unprofessional to me, especially because other programs like xrandr do not have
any issue setting the proper monitor setup.
To nail down the issue: screen/monitor positions can be set without problem in
monitor.xml, but rotation settings are not applied or ignored.
When trying to make the settings in gnome-settings it is like described above:
As long as not monitor is rotated everything can be set up nicely, but as soon
as the monitor is being rotated the screen is messed up in the way described
above.

[Bug 1244548] Re: Keyboard shortcut for changing keyboard layout does not work on lock and login screen

2016-07-04 Thread uwe
Issue is persistent in 16.04, this is very annoying, and #69; that is
not a fix, the language button in the login dialogue is misleading and
broken, and the screen is usually locked due to inactivity which happens
most of the time not for intentional screen lock.

I thought its bug 1286910 , but I'm using gnome shell and getting issues
unlocking the screen, i can (supposedly) switch language from the unlock
screen dialogue, but it actually does not change the language, I'm using
arabic as the second input language, and even when I set the language to
english in that dialogue, It seems to input arabic characters (try to
use b or B or T; corresponding to two characters ﻻ, ﻵ and ﻹ . and will
show two dots(that is, two characters); I use it as indicator for what
language is being input.

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2016-04-18 Thread uwe
Um; It would, as we know, mostly ignore RTL reading users.

now RTL works in kde/konsole beautifully, with shaping and everything,
so I'm not sure how problems mentioned in #46 are handeled there, and
I'm sure its not perfect either, but works better than BiCon for example
but if softwares have been using functions to count characters to know
width, maybe *that* is broken, and language specific functions should be
replaced with language agnostic functions ...

[Bug 728040] Re: Global Menu: Terminal: View->Show Menubar toggle makes no sense

2011-10-13 Thread Uwe Stuehler
I did not read bug #868152 thoroughly enough. Now that I understand that
there is (always was?) a separate setting to control the menu access
keys I'm not sure which way you want to go, but I think that it should
be easier to disable menu access keys and it used to be very easy when
"Show Menubar" had that side-effect.

[Bug 868152] Re: Enable Menu Access Keys was switched back on without my request

2011-10-13 Thread Uwe Stuehler
I agree with Nick. It is essential that menu shortcuts can be disabled
in order to deliver Alt+ key combinations to the process running in
the terminal. It used to be possible to disable "Show Menubar" to that
effect, but with Unity and the external application menu
(UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=libappmenu.so), at least in Ubuntu 11.10, the "Show
Menubar" option has no effect at all.

[Bug 868152] Re: Enable Menu Access Keys was switched back on without my request

2011-10-13 Thread Uwe Stuehler
** Description changed:

Somehow in the last update (as of ~08:30 BST) my gnome terminal re-
acquired the "Enable Menu Access Keys (Such as Alt+F to open the File
menu)" option. I had to hunt around for a while to figure out how to
shut it off again. This is a nasty surprise, as well as a terrible
default: terminals are meant to send your keystrokes to remote
applications, and gobbling them up locally is unhelpful.

For example, Alt+F is actually "move forward by word" in any terminal
application using GNU Readline, as well as in Emacs and possibly nano.
It is expected by users that alt+key combinations will be sent to the
  terminal-using application in some form.

As an aside, this kind of bug is why I gave up on using Emacs nearly 20
years ago: one of the terminals I had access to ate ^S locally for
terminal flow control, so the command combination to save a buffer
locked up my session and lost my work. I lost three important edit
sessions before giving in and permanently switching to vi. This kind of
behavior can be disastrous for people!

[Bug 666522] [NEW] Non UTF-8 chars in .ics crashes calendar

2010-10-25 Thread Uwe Grensing
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Import a .ics File containing non-UTF-8 characters (e.g. german Ümläuts in
ISO-8859-1 coding) into evolution by either importing it or receiving it as an
attachment.
Instead of either
- silently converting it into UTF-8
- or denying it with an appropriate error message,
the file is accepted, but afterwards, displaying the calendar stops with a "The
Evolution calendar was finished unexpectedly." ("Der Evolution-Kalender wurde
unerwartet beendet.") and you have to restart Evolution.

Just to clarify after such a lengthy discussion:

The problem means: No notification when changing the volume or
muting/unmuting using hardware keys. But the volume changes like
expected.

This has worked in Ubuntu Intrepid at least.

2010-08-10 Thread Uwe Geuder
I have Kubuntu Lucid with all updates. The problem still exists on my
T40.

The status of this bug is fix-released in the kernel. So either the
kernel fix does not work or there is another Kubuntu-specific component
involved, which is not yet listed under affected compontents.

[Bug 589461] Re: Does not detect hotplugged USB storage device with USB wireless

2010-06-11 Thread Uwe Geuder
Hi Felicia!

In response to your questions in https://bugs.launchpad.net/584052 :

I have really no clue whether your problem here is a duplicate of any of
the existing reports or something different.

I would recommend to update udisks before any further investigations. If you
don't want to wait,
a new version 1.0.1-1ubuntu1 is already available in lucid-proposed as
mentioned in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udisks/+bug/539515/comments/120 .
Otherwise you have to wait a while until this or yet a newer version becomes
available in "normal" lucid-updates.

If upgrading alone does not just solve the issue and you need to
continue investigations, it might be interesting to compare the output
of "udisks --dump" when the USB drive is recognized to the case when
it's not recognized.

Yes, your assumption is correct. At the next login nautilus runs the the
mount command, which takes 18 minutes to complete.

Yes, it triggers floppy access. But it takes "only" 25 seconds until it
fails. Only one I/O error is written to syslog. No mount process is
spawned. The next attempt succeeds immediately.

[Bug 539515] Re: Attempts to mount floppy despite no media present - disable automount

2010-05-31 Thread Uwe Geuder
> After logging out and in again it works correctly:

1.) function automount_all_volumes is called (of course) but it doesn't
call g_volume_mount for the fd

2.) function volume_added_callback is called for the floppy and it calls
nautilus_file_operations_mount_volume

But no mount process is started. So
nautilus_file_operations_mount_volume seems to do the right thing. I
have not investigated how.

2010-05-31 Thread Uwe Geuder
>> 1. nautilus tries to mount floppy drives at startup.

Yes it does. The be exact it does it in the first session after booting.
If you log out and in again, nautilus is being restarted but it doesn't
try to mount the floppy anymore. (as already mentioned in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/586873)

I have added some logging to prove my claim. See the attached patch
file.

Here is what it writes to syslog in the first startup after booting:

May 31 15:13:23 geuder-t40-u nautilus: *** UGe: entering automount_all_volumes
May 31 15:13:23 geuder-t40-u nautilus: *** UGe: volume name: 'floppy0'

May 31 15:13:23 geuder-t40-u nautilus: *** UGe: exiting automount_all_volumes

After logging out and in again it works correctly:

May 31 15:10:39 geuder-t40-u nautilus: *** UGe: entering automount_all_volumes
May 31 15:10:39 geuder-t40-u nautilus: *** UGe: exiting automount_all_volumes

[Bug 539515] Re: Attempts to mount floppy despite no media present - disable automount

2010-05-30 Thread Uwe Geuder
To summarize:

I believe we have 2 problems now:

1. nautilus tries to mount floppy drives at startup. Maybe it has always
done this, but I think in year 2010 it could also be removed. I guess
many of the floppy controllers existing today don't have a floppy drive
attached. At least not in laptops. And because automounting cannot work
when the system is already running the user needs to learn to use the
disk mounting applet or some other mechanism anyway. I guess nobody
wants to reboot just to get an fd mounted.

2. mount should really fail and abort in a couple of seconds if there is no
success in reading anything from an fd. The old 2 minutes seem already well
overdimensioned, but the current 19 are clear nonsense.

[Bug 539515] Re: Attempts to mount floppy despite no media present - disable automount

2010-05-30 Thread Uwe Geuder
>> But what does the detects change mean? It has no way to detect whether
>> it has media or not???
>
>Right, that's why the value is 0.

Yes, now I remember that's the way floppy drives work. Once a program
wants to read, the drive just tries to access the floppy, whether one is
inserted or not. You could hear these read attempts well. (I haven't had
a floppy drive for a while)

But if this is the case the whole automount doesn't make sense for
floppies. There is no way to tell when a floppy was inserted, so there
is no way to start mounting it automatically when it happens.

But automount by nautilus comes in 2 flavors:

1.) at application start all existing media will be mounted.

2.) later newly inserted media will be mounted

These 2 cases can be easily found in nautilus source file nautilus-
application.c

1.) function automount_all_volumes

2.) function volume_added_callback

For this report we are only interested in case 1.)

So there are two options to make things work nicely:

a.) you never call the automatic mount for a floppy
(that's also like the lower level automatic mount with -a option does it.
Floppies have the option noauto in /etc/fstab, so they will be skipped)

or

b.) if you call mount it must fail rather quickly

I don't know how nautilus handled this earlier.

But there is a clear difference in how fast a mount fails in Jaunty and
Lucid

Jaunty (that's the oldest LiveCD I had handy. I know that the problem did not
exist in Intrepid, because
I had Intrepid on this machine before Lucid. But I didn't have an Intrpid
LiveCD handy now)

(added /dev/fd0 line to /etc/fstab manually to enable user mount)

$ time mount /dev/fd0
mount: block device /dev/fd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified

real2m10.679s
user0m0.000s
sys 0m0.008s

The time is very much the same for repeated attempts, both user mounts
and root mounts

Lucid: (Tested in LiveCD and normal disk installation)

$ time mount /dev/fd0
mount: block device /dev/fd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified

real18m17.583s
user0m0.008s
sys 0m0.016s

Again the time is repeatably the same for both user and root.

So the mount "timeout" has changed from 2 minutes to nearly 19 minutes!!!

For me the only clear symptoms are

- disk light steadily on during the mount attempt
- error messages in syslog once or twice a minute during the mount attempt

I'm not convinced whether there is any clear delay at boot time as some
people report. And if there is one it is certainly not over 18 minutes.
I can use the system during this time and see the mount process just
hanging there and the errors appearing in syslog.

I believe it could be possible that the same issue has existed before,
but I got never worried about 2 minutes of steady disk light. (At least
part of that time the hard drive is working anyway when it starts the
desktop). Or possibly the time was even shorter than 2 minutes in
Intrepid.

But now in Lucid I got worried about what appeared to be 18 minutes of
"steady I/O". And that's why I started to dig.

My "udisk --dump" reports

  device-file: /dev/fd0

The "has media" is obviously incorrect, because I don't even have a fd drive.

But what does the detects change mean? It has no way to detect whether
it has media or not???

interesting. So either not all duplicates of this bug are the same issue

eev2, could you please run the command "pstree -p -l" during the mount command

[Bug 539515] Re: Attempts to mount floppy despite no media present - disable automount

2010-05-28 Thread Uwe Geuder
Hmm, this bug is assigned to gvfs. I must admit that I understand gvfs
less then well. But according to my analysis
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/586873 gvfs was not involved in this
issue.

nautilus just calls /bin/mount (see
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49269052/pstree2.txt ) with a single
parameter /media/floppy (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/586873/comments/5
). And that mount command does not finish for 20-30 minutes, error
messages are written all the time to /var/log/syslog (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/586873/comments/2
)

Not sure whether

a.) nautilus should never have called mount or
b.) mount should fail immediately

But at least I don't see how gvfs is involved here.

[Bug 539515] Re: Attempts to mount floppy despite no media present - disable automount

2010-05-28 Thread Uwe Geuder
Response to some people are wondering how this can be possible, if
there is no floppy drive in the machine. Obviously the presence of the
floppy controller is enough. There is no recognition whether a drive is
connected to the controller. (Or maybe that recognition is broken, but I
don't believe that such recognition at all exists)

As I wrote in duplicate report https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/586873
the following facts seem interesting to me:

- This problem did on appear with Ubuntu Intrepid on the same machine. So it is
a regression introduced somewhere on the way.
(Unfortunately I've never had Jaunty or Karmic on this machine. So it's a long
way :(

- This problem does *NOT* happen in Kubuntu Lucid on the same machine.
Although Kubuntu has exactly the same floppy line in /etc/fstab KDE just
doesn't seem to call the mount command like GNOME.

[Bug 586873] Re: GNOME tries to mount non-existing floppy in Lucid

2010-05-28 Thread Uwe Geuder
Correction: Starting a new GNOME session will not trigger the problem.
It happens only once until the machine is rebooted.

Further info:

The mount program running is really /bin/mount, checked from
/proc/nnn/maps (So source package would be util-linux)

The command line is

mount /media/floppy0

and the corresponding /etc/fstab line is

/dev/fd0/media/floppy0 autorw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0
0

(That line was created by the Lucid installer. No upgrade history or
manual editing. My Kubuntu installation on the same machine has exactly
the same fstab entry, but it doesn't suffer from the problem)

[Bug 586873] [NEW] GNOME tries to mount non-existing floppy in Lucid

2010-05-28 Thread Uwe Geuder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Each time when starting a GNOME session, the system tries to mount
/dev/fd0. This machine has no floppy disk drive (but obviously an FD
controller)

Symptoms:

- "disk light" is permanently on for at least 20 minutes
- mount process is hanging there
- errors are written to /var/log/syslog all the time

Problem exists in Ubuntu Lucid, but it did not exist in Ubuntu Intrepid
(I have not used Jaunty and Karmic on this machine)

Problem does not exist in Kubuntu Lucid on the same machine.

I'm not sure whether nautilus is the culprit. I picked it, because

I can also confirm this bug. Printing works fine with every program
except with evince. When printing in evince, the printer icon appears in

To make matters worse, it seems to be a random bug, i.e. sometimes

I have this issue with Karmic on an Asus laptop which has the i830
graphics chip. Unfortunately, Robert's suggestion (#60) didn't work for
me.

So I have the flickering, and my screen is moved to the right. The funny
thing is that I have to click to the places where things are supposed to
be, not where they appear on the shifted screen. That means I have to
click somewhat left to activate a button or menu item that appears to be
a little more to the right.

Re: [Bug 373096] Re: [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark

2009-08-06 Thread Uwe Schilling
The behavior has changed already under jaunty: now working on battery
power always allows for medium brightness, and only not touching the
keyboard for a while dims the screen completely. I guess that is the
desired behavior. I didn't notice this change since I haven't tried
working on battery for a while.

I would like to be able to bring the screen even on battery power to
100% brightness, but I guess not being able to do so is also desired
behavior and my wish would be more a thing for a whishlist. In my
opinion, this bug can be marked as fixed (I haven't checked on karmic
though)

Yes, if I bind "maximise window" to ctrl+esc, the same problem arises
for that action. I guess with interface, you are talking about System ->
Preferences -> Shortcuts: the keybinding written there is ctrl+esc

Re: [Bug 373489] Re: [jaunty] gnome sometimes uses keycodes instead of characters

2009-05-08 Thread Uwe Schilling
Yes, it is reproducible. Some further testing showed that gnome starts
to mix up the shortcut after log out -> log in or after a reboot

Steps to reproduce:

1. Go to system -> Preferences -> Keyboard, change the behavior of the
capslock key there to "swap capslock and esc"

2. Go to System -> Preferences -> Shortcuts, bind ctrl+lower key (new
esc-key) to "run terminal"

3. check that it works

4. log out and log back in or reboot

5. ctrl+lower key doesn't start the terminal anymore, however ctrl+upper
key starts terminal and activates capslock.

I am working on a German keyboard layout (qwertz), I don't know if
that's of any relevance for that matter)

[Bug 373489] [NEW] [jaunty] gnome sometimes uses keycodes instead of characters

2009-05-07 Thread Uwe Schilling
Public bug reported:

I have set the shortcut ctrl+esc for opening a new gnome-terminal. In
the following I will refer with the "lower key" to the capslock-key
itself and with "capslock" to the behavior, also the "upper key" is the
escape key itself, "esc" is its behavior.

I swapped the capslock-key and the esc-key, so that with the shortcut
remaining, so that I press ctrl+lower key to open a terminal. This works
for a while. However, after some time, gnome "forgets" that the keys are
swapped and ctrl+lower key doesn't translate into any action, while
ctrl+upper key opens the terminal and activates capslock at the same
time. For all other applications, the lower key keeps being used as esc,
and the upper as capslock, only the shortcut is broken. It can be
restored by setting in system -> preferences -> keyboard shortcuts the
shortcut for opening the terminal to some other value and then back to
ctrl+lower key. However, after a while, gnome forgets it again.

The bug gets ever more confusing: while logging this information, I had

2009-05-06 Thread Uwe Schilling
Actually, it is not always switching to the "cyclic mode". This time,
the screen went black right after unplugging, and I could bring it with
the hotkeys to a level at which it was barely usable in a completely
dark room. However, it did not become brighter by itself this time, as
described above. Here is the output of lshal -m during unplugging, using
the hotkeys to see at least a little bit on the screen and replugging.

[Bug 373096] [NEW] [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark

2009-05-06 Thread Uwe Schilling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Since I updated to from hardy to jaunty, the behavior of the screen
brightness on battery power is strange. On unplugging, the overall
brightness goes down (expected), but cannot be brought up to the level
without battery power (unexpected). I can still use the hotkeys to
adjust the brightness, but the intervall is in a lower range than on AC
power. Furthermore, with a period of about one minute, the brightness
goes down even further, bringing it the brightness to a level, where it
is impossible to work, even with the brightness set to maximum. In the
dark periods, the minimum setting seems to turn off the backlight
completely, while maximum is a bit brighter, but still unusable. Then
after about a minute it goes back to the brightness of "only some levels
below AC power, but usable", after a minute dark again and so on.

A similar behavior is described in two bugs: For one bug 284550.
However, in contrast to that report, I have the problem only when
running on battery power. Additionally, it says in that bug report that
a fix was released in gnome 2.24.4, but I still have the problem working
in gnome 2.26.1. Bug 325789 describes the same behavior also only on
battery power, but it claims that it doesn't occur any more in jaunty.
Therefore, I decided to file a new bug report.

I am working on a Samsung X20 with intel graphics chipset.

btw.: how do I link other bugs?

[Bug 370023] Re: not possible to set screen resolution back to original value

2009-05-01 Thread Uwe Schilling
My first bug report was not quite accurate: there actually is an extra
entry in my xorg.conf specifying a virtual resolution of 1280 x 1024. I
commented it out and have now my native resolution back. However, it
should be possible to get back the native resolution via GUI tools
without resorting to editing xorg.conf. So this is basically what the
bug report is about.

[Bug 370023] [NEW] not possible to set screen resolution back to original value

2009-04-30 Thread Uwe Schilling
Public bug reported:

I used the screen settings to change my resolution to a lower value
(because I could not get a projector to work). In order to change to the
lower resolution, I was asked for the system password, because "Monitor
Resolution Settings has detected that the virtual resolution must be set
in your configuration file in order to apply your settings. Would you
like screen resolution to set the virtual resolution for you?
(Recommended)".

After I entered the password and logged out and back in in order to
apply the new settings, the old setting for my resolution is gone. I
can't set it back to its native value (1400x1040) anymore, since it is
not listed in the list of possible resolutions anymore. I checked
xorg.conf, and there 1400x1040 is actually the only value which is
entered there. However, I am not given the choice in the menu and there
I am not able to set it back to its original value.

This seems to be a reproducible issue, since I first set the resolution
to 13.. x ... and then went down one step further to 1248x1024, and 13..
x ... is also gone now.

Working on a Samsung X20 with ubuntu 9.04. Screen-resolution-extra is
installed, so I am not sure if I am reporting the bug to the correct
package.

[Bug 355939] Re: songs from folders with only three letters in upper case appear twice in playlist

2009-04-15 Thread Uwe Schilling
Yes, it is reproducible. Steps to take:

1. have a folder with music in your library, for example jbo

2. start rhythmbox

3. I cannot directly rename a folder if only case changes, so I rename
jbo to jbo2

4. rename jbo2 to JBO

5. now every song appears three times in the rhythmbox library, once
with the path jbo, once with the path jbo2, and once with the path JBO,
not beautiful, but not really a problem...

6. restart rhythmbox. Now the songs do not appear thrice anymore, since
the songs with the directory jbo2 are not in the playlist anymore, as it
was to be expected. However, every song from that directory still
appears twice in the playlist, once with directory jbo, and once with
directory JBO

[Bug 351427] Re: Add "use max resolution checkbox+functionality" to gnome-display-properties

2009-03-30 Thread Uwe L. Korn
This bug is in some case depending on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299653, as I want to use the mirrored
display, but gnome-display-properties forces both screen to have the
same size, but I want that the maximum of both is used. Selecting the
wanted resolution in gnome-display-properties is not possible as it
would only work if I would place the part of the desktop displayed by
this monitor besides and not on the internal monitor.

Another possible caption for this wanted checkbox could be "If there I
an external monitor available at startup, use it with its maximum
resolution".

[Bug 351427] [NEW] Add "use max resolution checkbox+functionality" to gnome-display-properties

2009-03-30 Thread Uwe L. Korn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Often people have connected two displays with their laptop where the
second, external one is not always connected and has another aspect
ratio than the internal. Starting up the xorg-server with both connect
it falls back to the highest resolution both have. For example using my
EeePC 901 with a 1024x768 external display connected it falls back to
800x600. Sure, this is a feature which shouldn't be changed in xorg-
server, but I would like to have the max resolution of each screehn, so
that my internal display uses 1024x600 and the external 1024x768. At the
moment I have to run a "xrandr --size 0" after login. The problem hereby
is, that this is not really userfriendly and my gnome-panel gets messed
up while the resolution is at 800x600.

My wish:
 - Add a checkbox with the caption "Use max resolution of connected displays"
 - If this option was checked, directly after the gnome-session was started,
the command "xrandr -s 0"(or an equivalent) should be issued, before any
application in this sessionn is started

[Bug 39328] Re: Offer option to disable scroll wheel on task list

2009-03-28 Thread Uwe Schilling
Same grievance here. Whenever the pointer is accidentally over the
taskbar and I only slightly touch the scroll area of my touchpad, I'm
instantly desoriented for a few seconds. On a touchpad, this feature is
unusable (at least, obviously to a lot of people) and it should be
possible to disable it.

2009-02-22 Thread Uwe L. Korn

** Description changed:

Using 9.04, Totem/Gstreamer crashes when trying to play a Quicktime
movie. I tested this with BigBugBunny and also with random quicktime-
files from apple.com/trailers. This crash was also confirmed by other
  users from ubuntuforums.org and ubuntuusers.de, using 9.04.
