I would agree It does seem simular to bug #50150 mentioned ablove as I do share some of the other symptoms such as missing icons in gnome panel's app list. OK I know it's a big hammer but removing and reinstalling gnome then restarting metacity made this go away. I suspect a broken gnome schema, as in some other things.
