Never used Compiz, Beryl, I have an ATi. There is no .gnomerc here to. I am pretty much with the same. Suddenly metacity was not started anymore. After a series of tries I ended up deleting ~/.gconf, and now metacity does start nicely, sort of. No beryl, no compiz, ever.
