Public bug reported: I ran into this bug when trying to configure the Rhythmbox music player to work with Last.fm. When using automatic proxy configuration, it attempted to connect directly to the target server. When I switched ot manual proxy configuration, it used the system proxy settings.
It appears that the problem is in gio proxy resolution system, which doesn't support automatic proxy configuration through PAC files as demonstrated by the test program at: https://gist.github.com/tazle/9049829. For me, program prints "direct://" if automatic proxy configuration is enabled and the correct proxy address if I switch to manual configuration with our external WWW proxy address. The same problem has been originally reported for gnome-vfs aeons ago at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=289357 and https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=123900. Perhaps now, almost 10 years later, it would be possible to resolve this issue?
