After closing Firefox and some other apps, I tried again and got the same error about not having enough memory. Including cache and swap I should have had enough byte-for-byte. I'm sure there is some overhead, but an extra gig? It shouldn't try to load the whole document at once if it can't, but I guess that would be the matter or a different bug.
