I guess this is fixed now, as in 10.04 I can no longer Shift+drag the icon from the Places menu. Sebastien, this may be a workaround. But this is surely not user- friendly and I don't know why I have to search in Launchpad in preparation to report a bug in order to be able to create a desktop icon? If changing a gconf option is the right way, then Ubuntu should change this setting when I drag the Home icon to the desktop.
