Nothing is written to ~/.xsession-errors from /etc/init.d/gdm start to the display of the dialog. I am using 7.10, with all recent updates. I need further information on how to get a backtrace on this program, since it seems to be started by gdm. How do I start X without gdm, for example? Will gdmgreeter run without gdm? It's not clear to me that gdmgreeter is crashing, or just terminating.
