I have similar problem, in my case I saw some firmware update but don't know
what it was exactly.
It happens while Im using Dock station through thunderbolt and when I plug in
directly to laptop through HDMI port. I have tried with noveau ( doesn't work
at all ) and nvidia drivers ( works but can't change display order as it hangs
and also closing lid makes my laptop freeze ). I tlooks like something happens
with xorg server but not sure.

Yes, the main issue is the displays turn black.
However, I think that both causes (closing the laptop lid and locking) are
equally important.

[Bug 1813896] Re: Monitors stopped working

2019-01-30 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The only recent changes to Ubuntu 18.04 I can see that might be relevant
are:

gnome-shell - 7 January 2019
linux (kernel) - A couple of times this month

There have been no changes to Xorg or mutter anyway...

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu)

** Also affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

Is the main problem you are reporting that all displays turn black after
you close the laptop lid?
