Stephen Donnelly's right. Had the same problem, found this page, and tasksel allowed me to install Gnome when I chose to install Ubuntu Desktop. I've been using apt-get install several times, right down to attempting installing the gnome-keyring-manager package (which can't be installed). Tried aptitude as well, but I was doing that blindly. The solution was here all along - tasksel. Suggestion for next update: get apt-get to recommend using tasksel if possible... As a possible workaround I used tasksel to install the 'Ubuntu desktop' task, this does not seem to depend on gnome-keyring-manager. I have (had) the same problem when installing Gnome on Kubuntu. Apparently gnome-keyring-manager was pulled out of the hardy-dev- repository on 2008-02-09 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/i386/gnome- keyring-manager/). I worked around it by downloading the archived .deb from there and installing it with dpkg -i. Then gnome installed without problems. I also have the same problem. Problem seems to be due to the disappearance of the gnome-keyring- manager package which the gnome-desktop-environment package depends on.
