No that's not correct. But that's besides the point.
Nobody said something about switching to Normal in between.

This issue is about all the users who want to be able to switch off
Compiz altogether using the NONE option and switching them back on using
the Custom option -- that will restore your custom settings just fine.

Thus, bug #151395 is totally unrelated to this one here.

I'm not sure that he meant it this way, but if he did, I'd like to confirm that

[Bug 191650] Re: [hardy] there's no 'custom' desktop effect profile after installing ccsm

2008-05-09 Thread Nick Bauermeister
Sebastien, this has nothing to do with dependencies.

Let me recapitulate the issue for you:

After the default installation of Ubuntu, we have three options available in
the Visual Effects tab of gnome-appearance-properties:
* None
* Normal
* Extra

In Gutsy, after you installed compizconfig-settings-manager, you additionally
got
* Custom AND a button labelled with Preferences

The Preferences button would open up ccsm.

Because ccsm is considered too confusing for the usual user, Hardy introduced
simple-ccsm (which is nothing but a simplified interface to ccsm and thus
depends on it).
That means, the Preferences button now opens up simple-ccsm.
However, neither ccsm nor simple-ccsm are installed by default (and nobody says
they should).

Now comes the problem: in Hardy, you have to install simple-ccsm to make BOTH
the Custom option as well as the Preferences button appear.
That means, if you have only ccsm installed, you won't be able to turn Compiz
off in the Visual Effects tab, because you do not have an option to turn it
back on, without losing your settings (Normal and Extra are prefabricated
profiles).
Because of that, the user has to install simple-ccsm even if (s)he doesn't
need/want it (and know about the change from Gutsy to Hardy in the first place,
which nobody appears to do).

There are two solutions now:
1) Never hide the Custom option (no matter what is installed)
2) If ccsm is installed, show the Custom option but not the Preferences
button (which will finally appear when installing simple-ccsm)

Solution 2) was the one I proposed 2 months ago.
But now that I think about it, I prefer solution 1) because there's no need in
hiding the Custom option (itself) in the first place and there's also the
possibility to configure Compiz via gconf.

I hope this will clear things up.
Regards,
Nick

2008-05-09 Thread Nick Bauermeister
I'm sorry but you don't understand the issue at all.
Please take a look at the mockup above.
There is NO Preferences button. I am (we are) talking ONLY about the Custom
option in the Visual Effects tab.

We do NOT want simple-ccsm installed by default -- having simple-ccsm
installed should ONLY make the Preferences button appear.

It just doesn't make any sense that the availability of the Custom
option depends on simple-ccsm, because there is always the possibility
to configure Compiz via gconf (or ccsm).

To sum it up visually:
This is how the Visual Effects tab should be by default (as in after the
standard Ubuntu install):
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/14389642/appereance-pref-mock.png
And like the screenshot attached after installing simple-ccsm.

As you can see, the only difference is in the Preferences button.

P.S. if it is not possible to distinguish the availability like that, it would
be better to get rid of the Preferences button altogether, because there's
always the separate entry in System → Preferences for simple-ccsm.

[Bug 191650] Re: [hardy] there's no 'custom' desktop effect profile after installing ccsm

2008-05-09 Thread brettalton
May I reiterate?

There are two packages that deal with custom compiz effects in Hardy:
simple-ccsm
compizconfig-settings-manager

In Gutsy, there was only:
compizconfig-settings-manager

In Gutsy, 'compizconfig-settings-manager' enabled an 'Extra' radio
button and a 'Preferences' button which opened 'compizconfig-settings-
manager'. In Hardy, 'compizconfig-settings-manager' does not enable this
feature. To enable this feature in Hardy, you have to install 'simple-
ccsm'.

I think what is wanted here is to have the 'Extra' radio button and
'Preferences' button when 'compizconfig-settings-manager' is installed,
just like in Gutsy. Like I said, only 'simple-ccsm' provides this
feature in Hardy.

Can we have both?

[Bug 191650] Re: [hardy] there's no 'custom' desktop effect profile after installing ccsm

2008-05-09 Thread Mike Rooney
Nick and Sebastien, the most reasonable solution is to enable the
Custom option after installing compizconfig-settingsmanager and not
just simple-ccsm. The reason why this is important is because if you
install compizconfig-settingsmanager and then change the option in
Appearances, your settings are lost forever! Basically by doing this, we
are not supporting the use of ccsm, only simple-ccsm, which seems silly.

The best solution IMO is to offer the Custom option always there, and if
they click it without ccsm or simple-ccsm, offer to install either (with
a third option to not install anything, since some people can use gconf
as previously mentioned), explaining the differences (ie, advanced vs
simple), and then install and launch the appropriate one.

Either way settings are being lost without enabling Custom for ccsm
and I think that is important, I for one have lost all my settings that
way at least once by disabling Compiz via Appearance, and then realizing
I had no way to re-enable my custom settings.

2008-03-16 Thread Nick Bauermeister
The problem with this is that you can not turn of Compiz via the Visual Effects
tab, if you are just using ccsm.
Because if you want to turn them back on, there's no way to get them back the
way they were.

You are forcing users to install simple-ccsm even if they don't want to
use it.

The Custom option should be available, if compizconfig-settings-manager
is installed (simple-ccsm needs it anyway) but only show the Preferences
button if simple-ccsm is installed.

2008-02-21 Thread Murat Güneş
You may of course argue that since it's kept optional, it's not pushed
to the user, but since a simpler alternative exists now, it's still more
sensible to integrate that to the interface and keep ccsm entirely
separate.

[Bug 191650] Re: [hardy] there's no 'custom' desktop effect profile after installing ccsm

2008-02-20 Thread Fred
I have (or as of now; had) this problem too.

Thanks to Murat Güneş for your helpful post.

I installed simple-ccsm from Synaptic, and not it works again.

Don't know why they added the simple-ccsm though, the old one (which is
still reachable) did work good.

[Bug 191650] Re: [hardy] there's no 'custom' desktop effect profile after installing ccsm

2008-02-13 Thread Murat Güneş
This is because the Appearance capplet now expects simple-ccsm instead
of ccsm.
